I'm not one to mix spin fishing tactics with fly fishing. But this video has prompted me to think differently how I'm going to tie a few streamers! Thanks boys, great video!
Anytime you fish with anything other than a dry fry or a soft hackle wet fly, you already have mixed conventional fishing with fly fishing. Anytime there's tungsten, tin, or lead involved it's conventional.
@@eduffy4937 do you fish with silk fly lines split cane bamboo rods and horse hair furled leaders as well cuz if not then you are also conventional fishing

I’m glad you made this video. I have a pocket fishing book from the 1960s that mentions spinners among fly tackle. I always wondered if that wasn’t the best use of Joe’ Flies spinners, as some of them are too light too cast unweighted.
Your excitement is contagious. I have never been able to master the art of casting a fly line but I have trolled multiple gear on the fly just because I can lol ,works great on the fishing highway. Tight lines boys.
Wow, that is awesome Marlin. It makes the saying so concrete. "If it's worth doing, do it right." Have a vision, believe you can do it, and get after it. Nothing is impossible to accomplish. I'm so proud of you brother. I've never met you guys but I feel like I know you. I was an AOD Treatment Counselor for 4 years and your story hits home. I lost my brother to addiction last year. 😢 Good on ya!!! I can't wait to see you in the showroom. I'm over in Columbia City Oregon. Just across the Columbia River from ya. ❤ My vision is fishing for a living with ADX. Just a single Dad trying to manifest the future I want.
I'm glad you discovered this not so new technique! 😆 Since around 1968 or 69,my friends and I have often, even today used this little trick trout and bass fishing on a fly rod!! Small Colorado Spinners with a fly, mepps size o spinners and even small spoons!! Killer tactic at times!! 😂
Ugh, this video makes me want to start fly fishing! I just picked up my spinning pole for the first time in 20 years. So thrilled to be back into the game, and now Ive got daughters to teach! Keep up the good work, and congrats on the expansion. Love your channel.
I been doing something similar but with spoons. I reel slow and give it little twitches like jerkbait but not as aggressive. Seems to work best with longer light rods. I would suggest single hooks verse treble hooks.
You guys rock I love watching you guys I love watching you guys since I moved back here from Texas and I love getting into trout salmon steelhead fishing again
I've actually got an old fly fishing book that shows spinners, spoons, and kastmasters as some of the terminal tackle to be used for trout at the end of a fly line. Not a new tactic but definitely forgotten.
Done it for years here in Michigan, going back to the 80's! We used to make very small Colorado spinners with 00 size blades and equally small swivels and hooks, often just a single hook. It may be new out west, but it's well established in the great lakes!
Good job Jordan I love when you can catch fish on lures that aren’t made for that type of pole I love using streamers on a spinning rod, best action ever
We use to put spin blades on our streamers, and jerk them across the surface for tuna on hot bites. Worked great. 50lb. Albacore on ocean fly rod was a true work out. Great video Jordan. Wonder if that technique could work on Steelhead?
Cool video, use to do this in my favorite creeks for Big brownies in NZ, #1 #2 veltecs for the win 😊 also thumbnail spoons, and tiny "slices" of hexagon bar. Almost Cech nymphing with micro spinners. Thankyou for the flashback to my youth 😂
Great Video and I am all for this technique! I've been using a similar hybrid technique for the last couple of years. What tippet size do you use with 1/8 roosters?
At least I'm not the only one in the world to do that. As a kid in Colorado fishing meps spinners were killing it. I didn't know any better and purchased some and threw them on the flyrod. I do the same with some s poppers on an 8wt for bass.
So what you could do if you want to fish a spinner on a fly rod is to rake maxima cimelion and top shot about 15 to 20 feet on the rod depending on how far you will be casting and use a bumper leader off it to the spinner and fish that and then if the spinner stops working then switch to a euro nymph rig on it
Great video with such amazing scenery and beautiful fish. Look into trying the Pistol Pete fly. I've been using them for a very long time - they work!;
I've been thinking about putting a spinner on my fly rod for song long thanks for making the video trying it out I'm going to try it on the Gallatin this weekend
Should totally come to Colombia Jordan! we have 25+ pounds peacock bass, Payaras (Vampire fish), Dorados (we call them the river tiger) caribean, pacific ocean etc. hmu if u wanna fish here some day, huge fan from Colombia
If Jordan you want monster browns on reasonably accessible rivers and streams. You really need to go to New Zealand. As I've seen numerous Vids from New Zealand fly and standard fishing, though mostly fly KILLING IT with minimum 18" Browns and many in the 3lb and bigger range. Though I'm not knocking Patty it's an Awesome Place 👍.
I exclusively use spinners and the really small lightweight ones have a hard time getting casted out far enough into the creek on a regular open face reel. this is a great idea
Way to go thinking outside the box! Roughly 35 years ago on a carabou hunt my uncles fished flies for salmon without any takers.. They threw on a little cleo on their 8 or 9 weights and crushed the atlantics! Dont know the legality of their technique or do i agree totally on throwing hardware on the flyrod, but hey,.. any port in a storm. Also have a buddy that runs eggsacks under an indicator for steelhead here in the great lakes with tremendous results

I imagine in that wind, casting a spinner on the fly rod was actually much less frustrating than casting a fly. Were you using a floating or sinking line?
Spinners on a fly rod. Been doing it for years, Use a mono rig and my 10.6 2wt nymphing rod to deliver 1/8 and smaller spinners to 40 feet with ease. And this is very effective. Strip and cast as you are doing or you can use the euro casting technique. Both work. The lighter rod is much more fun. Enjoy. ps, Trust me, you need to work on your casting technique. You are working way to hard. Fun vid.
I really want to see a spinner thrown like that for steelhead now! I'm kind of sad that all ours are basically gone for the year but I really want to try it next year. Also I wonder how a small twitching jig fished from a fly rod in kind of the same way would work. Instead of the vertical presentation it would be horizontal but it seems like a killer way to get it right in those fishes face
Plastic quick change clevis, thumbnail sized colorado blade and a tiny orange bead in front of a black fly gets the smashing grabs. Been using that for years in low water.
One thing I've been curious about: I know the value of not naming locations when your fishing in the PNW... but I don't understand the secrecy about Chile? Do the residents not want Americans booking their guide services, staying in their B&B's or spending American dinero in the Chilean economy? Is there a gaggle of report chasers ready to pounce and crowd a river or estuary out once they find out where it is? Thanks for any insight you might provide. Patagonia is an awesomely beautiful place!
Used this method before in Scotland it works good though you have to be careful you do not hit the top eye of your fly rod with the spinner as it can take it clean off,i would never use a good fly rod for this an old fibre glass rod is perfect as those old rods could take some hits and are a bit more stiff than carbon so better at casting heavier weights on a fly line.
