@@mas5867 What does it matter? The '95 team would have steamrolled any conference that year, same for years before and after. '95, the Big 8 had 4/8 teams end up in the top ten so ya, it was a great conference.
You can respect them, I never will. That program's lack of paternal guidance and discipline over the last thirty five years is the reason today's players in many sports disrespect each other and the athletic code.
As far as sthletic code when you get to that level of play get in other players head any advantage to seal victory where you from mars damn sugar tit had a hard life
This Nebraska team isn't even in the top 5 all time. The '91Washington Huskies were MUCH better than this one dimensional team on both sides of the ball. When your two best receivers are Clester Johnson and Reggie Baul with less than 40 catches between both of them, you're not going to be the best team of all time. They were a great team, don't get me wrong, but they played a bunch of cupcakes all year and met a soft Florida team at the end that wasn't able to handle them on the ground. A great team would have forced them to throw more, and they would have had all sorts of problems. Heck, the 2001 Oregon State Beavers would have probably beat this team, as well as the 2001 Canes.
I will always cherish the experiences with Nebraska football from celebrating as a child with my grandparents at 72 and Dodge after the 70 and 71 championships from coach Osborne pulling me out of class for a football conversation. I was a senior at Central High School in 79. Anyway he recruited my younger bros as well. My youngest bro Ahman ended up playing. What a time❤
That team had such insane depth at running back. Both Lawrence Phillips and Ahman Green were All American caliber players; and Clinton Childs and Damon Benning were both good enough to be starters at other programs. Childs rushed for 143 yards in this game. The second leading rusher for the Huskers that season? QB Tommie Frazier.
I can't believe we had to wait until 9/16 for our season opener following a national championship. Our fans were ready to go absolutely crazy. I was at this game at age 8 and thought we were the Hulk Hogan of football.
What a difference a year made. This was basically the same Sun Devil team that blanked Scott Frost in '96. The ASU players talked about how this game forced them into the weight room.
citizenbobx Arizona had top players that season who were inexperience, but came around the next season and destroyed Nebraska in Tempe at Sun Devil Stadium and went undefeated in the 96 regular season
@bryan buhrman I'm not an ASU fan. I was just making an observation about strength and conditioning. Something NU used to claim as an edge and will hopefully get back some day so we don't have to watch 25 year-old clips about what real football looks like. Actually don't know why I bother any more, since every other NU fan I run into online seems to act like a jerk. Maybe they don't deserve relevance again. "Best fans" my ass.
I was there, above the end zone with Childs running towards us, with my buddy from college, I turned to say something to him and before I could turn back Nebraska was already ahead 7-0. I was thinking "WTF just happened??" to watch this now I think is the first time I've ever seen it from another angle. Childs looked like he was out there running at about 60 mph down the field, no wonder we missed it in person haha. Wow the memories...
I wish I was about 3 or 4 years older and could remember this time. I was 7 in fall of 1995 and really didn't start giving a shit about Nebraska football until the 1997 season.
Wow. After putting up 64 and 50 points in two road games to open the season, in this game the Huskers got MAD!! They finally had enough of the nonsense of players committing crimes and getting arrested that they held a players-only meeting to cut out the crap and take out their frustrations on the next hapless opponent.
When Jim Rome was making the Osborne Bail Bonds reference to that group, I couldn't believe how many of the players were getting in serious trouble when I looked into it!! Today's public would try and give the program the death penalty with no hesitation!!
One thing that was quite odd was how the pollsters rated Nebraska number 2 in the nation at the start of the season, considering the players they had coming back that won the NC in 1994. How fucked up was that?!
BadLeaders Nu actually graduated a lot of great players after 1994, including 4 starting offensive linemen, and 3 starting defensive linemen, not to mention CB Barron Miles, S Kareem Moss, FB Cory Schlesinger, etc. Normally a team losing all that in the trenches doesn’t get better. 1995 Nebraska was actually very young in the trenches, but they just reloaded with superb talent that would carry the team through to preseason #1 ranking in 1996 and another national title in 1997.

@@DanielSong39 I remember watching that game on TV that night. FSU threatened late, but couldn't pull off the win. A very good game to watch.
The Child 65er was AWESOME! When it was 1st and Goal from the 24, I said to my friend Steve: They convert this, they are invincible. Ahman straight-snap. TD.
People forget we had 4 different starting IBs that year. After the KSU game, and Ahman had an ankle sprain. James Sims was thought as a possible starter. 5th String!
Say what you want about the state of the program now, but I will say Huskers are some of the most loyal football fans around. Despite not being close to the same elite level they were throughout the 90's, they still sellout every game.
Arizona St. comes into Nebraska and the Huskers score 77. The very next season, the Huskers go to Arizona St. and the Huskers score ZERO. College football's a strange game sometimes. Yes, I know they were different teams, but they weren't THAT much different.

Those guys were why the 1995 team is considered by many experts to be the best college team in history, and the 1996 team isn't even given an honorable mention by anybody.
@maubunky1 What. In 96, Neb scored 55 the week before and 65 the week after. Every team almost all unranked scored on ASU in 96. The 96 flop was all on Neb's back for not showing just like FL didn't 2 games before on the same field. In 96, Neb's SOS was 5, in 95, it was 24. When faced with tougher opponents, sugar coating won't happen.
I'm sure Nebraska would have scored over 100 if Tom Osborne had not called off the dogs in the 2nd half. And Nebraska did not even have the services of their best offensive player Lawrence Phillips for this game and they manage over 500 total yards the first half.
And next year Arizona State would go undefeated and almost win a national title in its last season of relevance. Hard to believe it's been 20 years of mediocrity.
I would cheer so hard for that ASU team. Really unfortunate that they couldn't melt more clock on their game winning drive against Ohio State. Much respect to Tillman and company.-Nebraska fan
