- The Navigator paper company is Europe’s largest manufacturer of printing and writing paper, and the sixth largest producer in the world. We went to Portugal and visited a eucalyptus field, a nursery, and one of their paper mills to see how Navigator produces 1.6 million tonnes of paper a year.

this video is closer to be an Ad for Navigator than to be an informational video.
Happens more than not. Camoflaged ads
Seems fine to me 🤷♀️
They didn’t teach us anything about paper making.
Also when i was in Portugal it was told to us that companies like this are the cause of a lot of Forest fires there. So that they can use that land after to plant more trees
@@jortpeters6419 in Portugal everything is a motive to start a forest fire.
"how paper is made"
"Wood chips are put into this 200m long machine"
The end
From my experience..
The wood chips are cooked to produce z fluid like mixture. They are then bleached to make it sparkling white. At this stage a disgusting byproduct called yellow liquor is made. That stuff poisons the entire ground water if left untreated.
The fluid is then passed over hot rollers which remove the moisture and the cellulose remain to make paper.
@@tindrums now I know why our ground water smells so bad we live near the paper mill. (However we live sort of far away from it)

More of an advertisement for the company than anything about the paper manufacturing process.
They are all advertisements.
there are better ways to make paper than chopping down trees, here in India there is a company 'Trident' which manufactures paper with the rejects of farmed goods (husk of rice and other crops). This has multiple benefits as the company pays the poor farmers for the husk, and the husk doesn't need to be just thrown away or burnt. I saw their facility and it was quite impressive.
Yes that is very good.
large scale? no
@@dharmdevil yes the same machines are used there too.
They don’t grow rice in Portugal. It is, for most pars, a hilly country. They make do with what they have.
It ain’t India. It is Portugal.
@@AntonioCostaRealEstate they not only use rice husk but other crop husk too like wheat, barley, etc

A very pretty story, with a nightmare behind. This eucalyptus and it's crazy amount destroyed more than half of Portugal natural land...
Can you please tell more about that? Just curious to know the other side too
@@SS-oc9uf Yes. This trees suck all the water and nutrients, and its leaves are poisonous. It kills almost every plant on its floor and leaves the land pretty dry and dead. And leaves no food for animals as well.
And now more than half of the portuguese florest is this. All dead, no food, and very hard to recover the land 😭
That's strange and saddening

It's weird that a small country like Portugal is the largest paper manufacturer in Europe, and the area where the factory is located is infamous for its foul smell which spreads for long distances and reaches neighboring cities.
Maybe because Portugal, with or without the foul stench you might suffer, is a stable democracy. And a Portuguese processor has control over its output at home. .
Try doing this in Africa, and just seeing your entire expensive state of plant being seized by tribal factions, under the orders of whoever competing power wants you bankrupt. Oh, never mind.... you’ve been there already. Angola, Mozambique, Guiné Bissau, Cape Verde.
And then Brazil.... the Klabin Klann would not let you have a plain level field on your shipments out of the Country.
I could’ve be worse. At least, the proud Portuguese female managers can boss around a few men.
without EU funds this one factory would have gone to the toilet . its tiny nation therefore easier to manage that most others . that paper is the least PT can do after repeatedly receiving over 50 billions as a part of the national bailout package , which i am still wondering where the money has gone but we keep paying.

Some person needs to do a research to find out whether E-Waste is better for the environment or cutting trees for paper....
It's no longer a choice of computer vs paper because we all use computers no matter what. So less paper is less paper.
@@Lexaire Uhm.... I know that, but I am just curious....
I imagine it would be hard to make that comparison. There’s lots of different forms of E-waste, and lots of different approaches to handling it. As well as many forms of paper and ways of creating it.
Well considering they said using paper has increased Europe's forest area by 17m hectares (3:26), I'm gonna go with paper.
No company that produces a product that ends up as E-waste, is out there planting more trees, or increasing any forests.
@@jonpotter1632 Yeah, usually a research takes an average for values, so like most popular method of making paper, etc.
Nice video. But now you should focus on their poor track record of Tajo river pollution. I Used to kayak downstream from this factory, and on weekdays the water was horrible. Black, foul smelly, with foam. It was a well known problem on the national level, and we raised voice on the matter, and had some limited success. Local media turned their cameras on problem and for some weeks afterwards water got ok. But then quality worsened. It turns out this factory had systems/filters to treat water, but did not use it for greed reasons, it's expensive, so when public turn their eyes on the problem, they "turn on" the system. When dust settles, it's gets turned off, and river gets ugly.. Sad

I think paper is a good way of storing carbon, if you're not burning it. Or even better build homes from wood.
It really isnt though, as trees, they can remove the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which is what makes forests such a great carbon sink. The moment you cut it down it just becomes carbon based object. Every single living thing in this world contains carbon, its not unique to plants :/
@@randomcatmeow1394 Living organisms containing it, but they are dying and rotting, emitting it back to the atmosphere. That is why if you store their remains, you're not letting it to be emitted.
the portuguese forests (that ofc has eucalipt majority) is emitting more carbon than it absorbs because of the resing area of eucalipts and our groundwaters are all being sucked by that shit
