Dealing with waste is a hard job to come by. We all know some manufacturing corporations/companies out there wouldn't put into any effort into actually segregating their wastes or ensure the safety of all their workers at all costs.
Coca Cola for instance - they are doing everything they can to make sure they Do Not have to recycle their plastic. We need to teach these arrogant corps a lesson that if they do not help us make a future, they will belong to the past.

Better than recycling is second using. Means, that 90% of shoes (if you pay attention on the video) are almost "new" and worn for 10-20%. So these shoes could be easily given to charity organisations for second-hand usage.

Upcycling is a start, but if we want to actually pivot to a more sustainable future we need to convince people that consumption is not the way. It doesn't help with a capitalistic economy though so its a difficult problem
They need to understand that consumers want shoes of good quality and that can resiste the passing of time. Not just good material but you need to throw them away after 1/2 years.
Buy leather, cotton, hemp, jute and re-sole the shoe. If someone can make a sport shoe that can be easily resoled and cleaned, it will help a lot. Michael Bloomberg, one of the richest men in the world, has worn his re-soled shoes for something like 10 years.
Nice recycling strategies! Those are the first steps for a better environment 👍🏼 But it still produces microplastic. 🧐 We need to leave the oil-based materials and use natural products which can be recycled by nature. 💪🏼
To be clear - Plastic is NOT something that naturally occurs anywhere including oceans. "Oceans plastics" is a poor attempt to make pollution SOUND less horrible. These businesses are wonderful. Helping our planet. Thank you.
The truth is that all running shoes can be recycled 100% and still perform just fine. It's just companies convincing us that somehow it's less than, because it costs them money. And in my opinion, most major running shoe companies actual over-engineer their shoes when shoes should have less sole, wider toe box.
Two problems: most of the factories where these incredibly expensive shoes are made are in the 3rd world by underpaid people who as seen in th video are applying toxic glue without ventilation protection AND companies would rather throw away perfectly good shows returned by customers rather than giving them to people who need them.
Like it or not, there will always be a third world to create cheap labour. It's never going to get better because that's how economy works. It doesn't work well of every country is rich and equal. Inequality is the engine for economy.
Those issues aren’t so simple. Donating shoes in third world countries kills the local industry because why would you buy a shoe if you are being gifted all the returns? It happens in Haiti with clothing. Also, defectives shoes are defectives shoes, some are unwearable and will end up being thrown anyway Better to increase their wages for them to be able to buy themselves, and give them better work conditions.
Any cloth should take the abuse for at least a year so that should be 7.8 versus 7.8 and we also need to count for poor people so you can substract.. yea that's ridiculous. Capitalism and constant drive for more money should just stop.
This video was really educative, enjoyed every bit of the video and wished it never ended. Kudos to insider business for bringing such informative view to our screen❤❤
Most of these shoes have small defects and are good enough to be used or those defects to be corrected. But brands won't sell them. They find that selling these to the recycler is cheaper than correcting the defect. I think this just adds unnecessary cost. The door companies can just correct it for a small cost and it will be much useful than selling new unused shoes to recycle
Insider business forgot one key thing in this entire video.. Parley is the organization that harvests the plastics from the oceans to make these Adidas recycled material products possible. Please go deeper into detail.. it helps bring attention to organizations that help these big brands for the greater good.
Maybe Producing nearly 10 pairs of shoes for each person on the planet lets move to a "Shoes on demand" model. you go to a store, try them on, you like them you order them. Order is received shoes get made and delivered to you.
Unfortunately, made to order shoes in modern first world countries would either be super expensive or take a really long time to get delivered to the end consumer.
If you want to massively cut down on your footwear waste, just buy a pair of goodyear welted shoes. You can repeatedly replace the soles with leather (completely biodegradable) and the shoes themselves can last 20+ years if you look after them

I love Asics Kayano for years now, but Asics produces too many styles and colorways, some of which are really ugly. In fact, the Kayano series has gotten uglier over the years. The foam sole is thick and looks orthopedic almost. Thank god they've gotten smart and gone back a decade to offer a previous Kayano model that everyone loved/loves that has a more classic design. I think they need to have AI study which styles / colorways are most in demand and create more of that and less of the ugly styles/colorways like royal blue paired with bright orange and a huge sole. Same goes for Nike, Adidas, and other famous athletic shoe brands.
It's great that there are companies doing things like this. I find it interesting that Asics says their recycled shoes are not made for performance, but neither are their other shoes. Sure, they cushion your feet, I wore Asics for the past 10 years, but that's about it. The shoes are actually not really helping you, our feet are capable of doing the work. Our feet need to be exercised just like any other part of our body, and shoving them into pillows that aren't even foot shaped aren't going to make your feet any stronger. We really don't need any of the special tech to run, we've only had fancy running shoes for a few decades, and people can still keep up when completely barefoot. Even the big shoe companies are lying to us. They know their shoes are bad for us.
What about mass refurbishment and rebuilding shoes which have life left in them or have one damaged element? Refurbish Instead of scrapping, shredding and melting down which breaks polymer chains and takes massive electricity.

I have a drop-off site for disused footwear, but they have to be laced runners [ which this video is almost entirely to do with anyway ].
