For any of you running the factory style alternator you MUST check that alternator plug and you MUST change it out when you replace the alternator. Those plugs wind up looking like that headlight switch plug he showed you

Agree 100 percent! NOTE: just take one of the battery terminals off when the car is sitting. Might just save your bacon.... or do one of them big kill switch’s that cuts ground or positive from the rest of the car

Also the fule pump relay under the driver's seat. If your car is a vert or has a sunroof it probably leaked over the years at some point if not now. That plug sits in a wet environment and will corrode. I had smoke come up between my legs while driving one day. Thankfully had a 1/2 wrench in the car to pull the battery and save the car.

Battery disconnect switch for the win. Many years ago I parked my 87 t bird to go into the store. While crossing the street the car started to crank over. Keys were in my hand. If it were a manual, it would have been bad!

  • @WRJ63
    @WRJ63 2 года назад +3

I've replaced the headlight switch and ignition switch in my 87 GT both were BAD! the headlight in mine looked as bad as the one you showed, and the ignition switch died the first time I stopped at a gas station to fill up and I had to giggle the key to finally get it to start and that was right after I found out the filler neck seal on the gas tank leaked and it dumped gas out all over the passenger side exhaust if I put in more than 10 gallons! so YES these thing have a lot of old worn out wires and seals that can give you a bad day.

Fuel lines from the filter to the tank, be sure they're tucked behind the tank straps and not sitting on the exhaust pipe.

Hey great vids. Yup same stuff I experience on mine. But the one thing I might be able to help everyone out in where the harness comes in. Quit running things outside what it’s supposed to run. Here’s how you add those extra power goodies such as electric fans electric power steering pump high power stereos. Run separate + and - blocks straight from the battery then run the wiring thru a separate fuse or circuit breaker then off to a switch then to the thing you need to power. However up grade the alternator and run the g3 alternator on it and peel the two wires back on the harness to were those two power wires come from one then add adequate length wire back to the alternator. Again this will keep stock wiring and fuse block from doing more than they were attended for

ALWAYS The Best Information My Friend🙏🏼😇 that is EXACTLY how an 85’ GT I Had in the Nineties Exploded into Fire. The Guy I bought It From had 3 pieces of wire end to end-taped together.. going to the fuel pump. Apparently when I fixed that wire I missed another one. That Shit went Boom 😆 or turned it ok and gave me an excuse to swap in a built 289i had in another car anyways🙏🏼😇💪😎👊🏻

Ignition switch is the most problematic. I had a slight jerk in my 92 vert during acceleration I could figure out for ntg. ( Distributor, plugs, wires, fuel injection harness, injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter , O2 sensors ) all parts thrown at her and still slight jerk. That's until I checked that ignition switch mane was it melted wires in the back we're burnt and had be butcher by an old 90s alarm install. New Harness repair kit and switch all problems solved. ( Ignition switch ties into tfi, ignition coil, O2 sensors, and more stuff please check yours people)

Yes Please do a T5 rebuild! This is on my list for my Fox. I swapped a 89 from a Aod to a T5 a few years ago. I used a 4 banger T5 and had to buy a v8 bell housing and use 83 Ford Ranger pilot bearing but it worked lol. My 89 was stock other then exhaust ,Cai and 4.10 gears. The first 2 gears were useless I could literally start driving it in 3rd gear.
I currently have a 306 with aluminum heads, Trickflow intake and the On3 turbo. I’m worried that it may not last but need a manual and I’m huh poor lol. I can’t afford some fancy 5 or 6spd.
Ps you should move to Tennessee bud. Lots of Foxbodies, The dragon, pony’s in the smokeless and other Mustang/ car shows.

Turn signals in my 93gt stopped working out of no where one day, but the hazards still worked, took a few hrs to figure it out and track down the cause, but it turned out to be the hazard switch, one of the wires that runs through it for the turn signals had popped out of the connector, due to being old and brittle, nothing wrong with the connector except for the plastic lock tab holding the wire in the connector had disintergrated inside from yrs of vibration i guess. Used a small heat shrink tube to wedged into the connector to hold the wire in place. Is there a good reliable source for these connectors? They all seem to get soo brittle with age. Huh interesting... Nobody ever mentions my #1 for fire on a Fox..
Dimmer Switch: Take this NO GOOD, Down right, Man hating thing OUT OF YOUR CAR NOW!! Bypass it and say BYE FELICIA!!
The events of that night are the reason I keep a brand new Fire Extinguisher mounted where my rear seats use to be. My Dad bought this 91' Strawberry on Titanium/Manual/Sunroof (EL Code) GT New and after 30 years of growing up in this car it's now mine and I'm doing what I can with what little I have to keep her a Survivor, but about 6-7 years ago I got out of the car and started up my GF's stairs (And I swear this car has a soul) When I got a sick feeling in my stomach and decided to walk back to the car.I noticed a glow from the gauge cluster area and When I opened the door and all that cold night air hit the inside.. WOOOOSH!! Dimmer Switch had started a fire that took 4 full DR.Pepper's (It's all we had on hand) to put out. replaced the switch and luckily nothing had fire damage somehow? less than 4 months later it happened again while I was driving at night. Not a year ago my buddy lost a 93' LX from this exact same switch and the scary thing is for weeks before this I kept telling him "Lemme bypass that switch" and he said no.. Woke up to a text of his LX at 3am with the inside burned out and the windshield broken.
Luckily the car wasn't a complete lose, but needless to say he let me bypass the switch after that.
I'm 33 years old and been around these cars my entire life and owned many of them including a Vibrant Red 93' Cobra and a few Saleen's before the prices went crazy, and if you guys truly love your Fox's then I beg of you keep a DAMN FIRE EXTINGUISHER in these cars at ALLLLL TIMES. Ford DID NOT use the right Gauge wire for almost everything in these cars (They mostly used 16ga when they should have used 14-10 minimal) I know these cars better than most and I'm telling you FIRE is something to fear completely, you'll be amazed of how fast these small fires can get out of control. And hell while I'm here.. DO NOT even run Fog Lights on these cars with the factory switches and wiring, run it all sperate or strip out the old stuff and beef it up. Fox's will punish you for bad Grounds as well so make sure you go in and clean up their grounds after 30-40 years. None of this stuff is expensive to do either, so no excuses. If my broke ass can afford a $20 Fire Extinguisher than you can too. Because I'll promise you one thing for sure with Fox Bodies.. Fires are not a IF they're a WHEN?
I sold every rare Mustang I've ever had accept this beloved 91' GT that needs serious restoring, but I love dearly and came within seconds of losing it.. Walmart Kidde Fire Extinguisher w/Mounting Bracket $17.93
I just checked their on sale.. Go get one NOW!!
Stay Safe. And don't sell your Fox to a "Drifter Bro"..
