  • On this episode I discuss the reason why people are still buying Foxbody Mustangs as much - if not more then they ever have! The popularity of these old mustangs is at an all time high (with no sign of slowing down) and I discuss some of the more personal reasons as to why I think this is happening.

At 34 I'm probably a bit younger than most groups who were actually driving the foxbody when they were new and actively running the streets, I was mostly around more Chevrolets & Pontiacs cause of my dad and his friends working on their cars, but I always remember and love seeing them at stop lights with that old classic 5.0 sounds as a small kid which I later come to know as the flowmaster exhaust lol. heck my elementary school principal had a 92 5.0 LX convertible the same color as your fox back in 1994/1995.
My first car actually was a white 1986 Camaro IROC-Z back in 2005 when I was 16 and had a friend who was a few years older with a black 1987 Mustang 5.0 T-Top that already graduated and would go to car meets and drive around in our younger days, and still has it to this day, but I would say he was the big influence that got me into wanting to get a mustang, and ended up selling the Camaro later on and I got my 1st mustang (S197) in 2008 and years later down the road my 1st fox at 30 (2019).
But you're so right, the community is just something completely eye open and special when you become a part of it and find so many people you can relate to and have memories with. Love it!

I'm 34 as well. My Dad grew up with GMs, he only bought GTOs, Chevelles, Novas, Impalas, etc. Not until 1986, he bought a brand new Mustang GT. His first Mustang, and his first Ford. When I was a kid we would work on the car together, go to the track every week or every other week, go to events in the surrounding tri-state area. We did everything from, heads work, Vortech, fuel work, etc. In high school my first car was a 99 GT that I put a Vortech S-Trim on, then after college I had a modded WRX and totaled it.
After that I knew the only car for me was specifically a 1986 GT. You have no idea how long I spent looking for a clean, rust free 86 GT. I was looking for only 1 year, although I still kept an open mind about 87-93s since I knew I had to be realistic about finding an 86 GT in the condition I wanted. After nearly 7 months and about 3 deals that were about to go through and at the last minute the seller ghosted me, I finally found one up in NY and drove up there with my friend in his truck and rented a trailer and trailered it back. The car is very clean, rust free, but I traded off the car I wanted before in FL that had a 347, full H,C,I, and MegaSquirt ECU. That wasn't really my choice though as I offered the guy with the 347 car his full price, told him I would hire a transport company to pick it up and I would wire the money to him before he had to do anything and then I got ghosted. Unfortunately my car only has a stock 302, but I do have HCI, and I just installed a Holley Terminator X before they discontinued it and the few places that bought leftover stock ahead of time and charged nearly twice for what they had.

I'm 50 years old myself. My Dad worked at the Dearborn, Michigan plant and I remember while growing up I would see the HUGE inventory lot filled with Foxbody Mustangs, and the Capri as well from 1979 to the end of 1994 when the SN cars took their place(I was sad to see the Fox go). It was a real treat seeing that lot throughout the years. The 85-86 were my favorites to see. I can also remember how those cars gotten even more popular when they went to the 16 inch pony wheels! The Foxbody is one of the most popular hotrods and the most popular mustang in history hands down!!

I had an 89 gt hardtop white w red interior 5.0 5 speed back in 2003. It was a 115k mile car but it was very clean. I had a k&n, stock h with 2 cats hallowed, flows, 373 gears, shortened stock shifter handle because I was a broke 20 year old. It was solid white with the red pinstripe. .I sold it for 3500 in 2004. Today the same car would easily be 15k+ I wish I'd kept it. Back then you could find a nice fox anywhere for 3-6 grand even the heavily worked hci blower cars were going for 8-10k max I'm talking black on black 93 notch backs with low miles lol. It's insane how much different the prices are now. I wish I had a time machine who would have thought value would go up that much in less than 20 years on a car that common.

Awesome video. I just found your channel. Subbed twice. I have 2 Channels. You sound just like me, after you finished your list. I am actually editing a video right now saying the same thing. But it's the scale model car community. We all do the same thing. We have events all over the country. I'm in Phoenix and another one of the You Tubers in my community, and I met up in Atlanta for a show. Never met before. We rolled and bunked together and became the closest of friends.
But now on Foxbody Mustangs.I am a bit older then you. I'm 56. I never owned a Fox Mustang before. Really most of my cars were Chevy. (I'm a car guy. Not a car Brand, guy) I always had an interest in the car once the 87 FIVE-O hit. Man it grabbed me. But never jumped in. Then in 2015. I had sold off or was selling. All of my cars. Except my daily 06 Mustang. I wanted to finally try out the Fox Mustang. And I found my under 100k not very modded 88 GT 5 speed. It has an absolute shit paint job. I slap stickers all over it. It turns off other Foxbody owners but it's mine and I'm having fun. But I do not have any community. There are quite a few of these cars around here. I tried hanging out and getting involved. All nice people. But something was off. First. My car was a roach next to theirs. I don't care. But all of their shit was sweet. Non of them even took a look at mine or asked me anything about it. Also, the Fox Mustang community is made up of mostly people around your age. No one wanted to bother with the old man, with the clapped out 88. Don't get me wrong. Super nice people. But I did not get accepted. Some of them had their kids. I had my Grandson. And he loves the car.
If they only bothered to let me in and find out more about me. This old man had some skills, knowledge and some useful stuff in my garage that could benefit the community. But no one bothered. So it's just my grandson and I when it comes to my Fox. I am so far away from all of the great events. But I do hope to make it back east to Foxtoberfest,, Ford Takeover or maybe more likely because of the lower distance. The LMR Gathering. I bet that I'd make some great Fox Mustang friends out that way.
Anyways, you were 100% on point. Now I'll got check out more of your content

I'm 49 I personally don't have anything against foxes but I prefer sn95s, I have a 95 gt 5 speed convertible which to me is the best of both worlds. It has a 5.0 but it has a refined fox chassis and overall it is flat out beautiful and I love the dual cockpit interior. They get hate for some reason but I don't get it. I understand the hate on the 2v 4.6 versions but not the car I think there better looking than the new edges. I have 18x9 cobra wheels with 1" spacers on front and 1.5" in rear and it looks badass to me. I can say when I was young even tho I was a 3rd gen Camaro guy I had an 85 Z but in my mind I always felt the 5.0 5 speed foxes were actual performance vehicals compared to the Camaros even the Irocs. They just always gave me the vibe of a sporty cruiser vs the go to hot street car.

The Mustang community around me includes Foxbody and SN95 owners. I've noticed these people will wave or give you a nod as you drive past each other in your Mustangs. There are some hot rod hangouts around town that people meet up with their muscle cars and older classic cars. The local Sonic drive in, an ice cream shop and a couple of other places.

I graduated in 92. Almost nobody in high school had a Fox. But many many students parents did and they were all over the place. Some got to take their parents new Mustang out on a Friday or Saturday night. They were fast too. A brand new car that was reliable. Coming off the malaise era of cars it wasn’t in anyone’s thinking that a new car could be fast. Especially after having nothing but crap for about 15 years from the auto industry. So most of us had older 60’s-early 70’s muscle. You had to be weary of the adult in his fairy new Fox Mustang because he had the knowledge and the money to do the mods necessary to make them very fast. If you had a fairly fast small block muscle car these guys would smoke your ass in a race. You better have a big block car and even then the more experienced older driver in the Fox would win. The sound, the noise from these 5 OH’s was incredible. You could hear one from a couple blocks away. If one pulled into the parking lot every noticed and you always made sure to watch one pulling out hoping they were going to get on it. Man the memories!!

I bought my 1st fox 🦊 at 31 yrs old (2016)... I was never a mustang fan.. but my cousin who is 20 + yrs older than me always busted my balls about his mustang (83 4 eye) built 302...he always praised the foxbody.. i couldnt get my head around it.. heres a old dude who enjoys this car and behaves like a teenager in it when he drives it.. 😂 .. lo and behold one day i come across 1992 LX convertible 5spd with the saleen stripe kit and cervini hood and snake 🐍 wheels and i tell him about it, and he says GET IT! i told him It doesn't have the motor or Trans.. he says "So What.. GET IT" so for 2k i buy this car and i was amazed as I've never paid over $500 for anything that didnt run... Bought and hauled it outta SC TO NC and she sits there til this day.. simce then i have never seen a more supportive community and a more available to help fix, build, swap, or buy parts for any car before.. the energy that comes from people with these cars is amazing.. CAN'T WAIT TO BUILD IT when i get around to it..

Everything you said is on the money. The Foxbody community is pretty tight and not just the Mustang cars, although there were some "Mustang only" snobs back in the day. Not so much anymore. I have a 1984 RS Capri still in the original tri-color white paint. I got the car from my dad in my early 20ies he bought the car new in 1984. My car is lowered with Centerline Scorpion rims. Other than the stance, rims and headlight covers, it looks completely factory. I have almost every suspension mod you can do and rocking a 347 stroker motor, super-fast. Very rare to see Capri's now-adays, very low production numbers (in 1984 just over 3,600 RS 5.0 cars) a lot of them ended up in the scrap yard because they received a lot of hate as the "imitation Mustang" back in the day. Now they are like hen's teeth. You have a good channel, keep up the cool videos!

It's funny for me as I was interested in cars long before I could even drive and was buying 5.0, MMFF, wantadpress etc...but ended up getting into early watercooled VW's and wasn't until I was 21 that I finally acquired my first fox. I love them all but particularly 85's and four eye cars more so. I mention that because in our area for a long LONG time you kinda got a cold shoulder from aero guys or not even acknowledged as a fox. Fast forward to recent times with all of them gaining value, and now having gotten more involved with going to carlisle ford nationals and meeting some people I coulden't agree more what is going on within this community is truly special. Specifically with all the different youtube channels that cross cover a lot of the same cars, jobs, and products while often shouting out to support eachothers channels. I own my 85 T-top now for over 10 yrs and plan to have it a very long time!

Get an 1985 mustang, it's carb, so simple to work on. It also had the most HP of the late fox body without fuel injection.
My past 85 mustang gt had 112k miles when I sold it to a friend in 1990. In 1994, 134k miles bought a rebuilt motor for it. Drove it to over 150k miles, and the reason he traded it in was because of theft. His girl lived in a very bad neighborhood in Boston, and faced several break ins, but the car had a security lock out to start.
In 1997, went to pick up my son from his mother. Drove past this small independent car sales place. Looked over, and saw what I thought was my gt for sale, but couldn't stop because had to pickup my son. I still had about 20 miles to pick him up. Thinking about the car the whole way. So on the way back, stopped to see it was my old gt. It was, shocking since I didn't see it for many of years. The odometer should 53k on it, because there was no 100k digit. Talking to the dealer didn't mention that I previously owned it. The dealer said it only had 53k on it. The interior still looked great, because it never was abused. After the dealer said it only has that 53k, I had to correct him, and tell him it was 153k and not 53k miles. This dealer bought the car at a car auction, and never received the key to turn off the safety switch to start it. The dealer asked if I could solve it, and did. Damn I should have charged him 200 dollars for it. They had the car for 3 weeks without being able to sell it, because who buys a car without driving it.

I'm 59, so the 79 Cobra Mustang was new when I was just turning 16. There were 535 people in my graduating class and I can only remember one Foxbody Mustang, but it definitely left an impression on everyone. It was a 302 2bbl Cobra with a 4 speed, but it could run with, if not outrun most of the cammed up Camaros, Firebirds and vintage Mustangs that were popular back then. I was a Chevy guy until the mid 90's when I finally bought my first Fox, which was a black 88 5.0 LX Convertible with a 5 speed, tan cloth interior and tan convertible top. A good friend still owns it to this day. I now have 4 Foxbody's. 2 89GT's, a Reef Blue 93 LX coupe, and a 91 GT that I've been a partner in for the last 25 years. Two are race cars and two are street cars. Just as the video describes, the friends I've made through cars in general have brought some of the best times of my life. I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on cars, often that didn't really have to spend, but I wouldn't change a thing.

The huge numbers of fox Mustangs produced drive !most of its appeal. The numbers drive the fan community.
The numbers drive the replacement parts industry.
The numbers drive the club participants.
I think the biggest difference between the fox generation fans and the earlier Mustang generation fans that is most evident today is the older generation fans have split into the show only crowd and the weekend cruiser crowd. With varying degrees of intensity and participation layered in between them all. I will add that I do not include the racing crowd in that assessment. That group is not concerned with maintaining much, if any, originality or even Street ability. I would guess that the people who want a Mustang like they knew or had "back in the day" would not be very appreciative of the guys who are interested in reworking a solid 89 5.0 LX coupe into a tubbed , spooled and caged drag car.
I am old enough to remember the October 1978 morning that I went out to the edge of my town to the Ford dealership to walk around the one new 79 Mustang 3door that had been descreetly parked in the far back corner of the lot. I knew that these would be better than the last version even though it had the same engine choices as the M2. I have enjoyed several Fox Mustangs in addition to a couple of v8 Mustang 2's and half a dozen of the first generation stangs, of which I still have a 69 mach one. Just my perspective.

Looking forward to driving a foxbody someday. I’m currently 20 but my father owned several growing up. It felt great riding around in it and hearing the intoxicating sound of them. He sold the last one to a young adult neighbor at the time and that’s been his last one. That was about 6 years ago or so. I always wanted to drive it but never had the chance to as I was still young. He still wants another foxbody, specifically an 88 and a hatch. I’d love to be able to buy it for him and I hope I can before the prices skyrocket even more & are harder to find.😬There’s something about the hatchbacks that I love and so does he. When we do buy one he thinks it’d be sweet to at some point swap it for a 5.0 or a 4.6 4v.

I'll be 42 this spring. I grew up in the 90's and when i was 16, i had a buddy who was 17 show up with a 86GT. I had no idea what it was, and thought it was just an ugly hatchback. Then he took me for a ride. 3.73's, 5-spd, off-road exhaust and some other mods. I remember hm just ripping through the gear with me hanging on for dear life. When i turned 17, i bought my '88 LX. All my friends had them through my late teens and early 20's. As they married and had kids, those fox bodies got sold. Eventually it was just me. I've had my fox for almost 25 years which is more than half my life and every time i bump into an old friend, they are shocked to find I still have the car. I'm one of the few guys who never found foxbodies attractive. To me they look unremarkable. However the SN-95/New edges are my favorite, probably because of the nostalgia of growing up in the late 90's early 00's.
I get how guys born in the 80's love these things, they grew up with them, and for speed demons, the Foxbody is one of the lightest of the mustangs and if you drop a powerful V8 into one, it can haul ass. Plus for initial D nerds, the 2.3 4-banger foxbodies are about as close as a Western car will ever get to the '83 Toyota sprinter trueno AE-86 in the cartoon.
They have their place in car culture, but you can keep yours. I'll go top down in an SN-95/new edge any day.

I hope the Fox community doesn’t hate on me for the LS swap! First generation Camaro community didn’t mind the 9” Ford rearend!

Lol! You’re a brave man coming in here with that comment 😂😉👊. That said, I totally understand the draw. I’ve done a bunch of LS stuff myself (I have some videos on my channel) however I’ve always left the LS’s between the GM fenders 😂
