Half empty concert hall for such a magnificent musical event with such a pianist as Berman......
To myself this lovable master musician and pianist appeared so often as rumpled and sad! And, as the years of his career progressed, 'twas to be even more so seemingly.
Might it be 'just me' or, were there occurrences in his life that were the causes for his being this actually?
This recorded event certainly did add to his already famous polish and burnishment alright. All of it was just 'the aces' surely.
We are most lucky to have so much of him and his musical expounding, as captured in sight and sound.
Oh do RIP, our dear Lazar!
unbelievable pianism and mastery of the keyboard,a true piano legend
great, now i remember when i heard him in salzburg for the first time in 1992 or 1993, i was looking for the place in the afternoon already, odl buliding, and standing there, me young school boy at the time, i heard some powerful and amazing piano playing from the right side and i looked down it was an open window and saw Berman practising there and he looked up and saw me and me not expecting that...scared of bothering him practicing, listening for free without paying, ran away...quite impressed by the long time he took to prepare his concert in advance. Hope I didnt scare him lol
what a present this music played by such a special pianist
An amazing pianist, never boring.

What an interesting program, Schubert and Liszt, along with De Falla, played with great artistry by a great master. I love hisclearly-articulated and at times with fury Mephisto, and his religious Ave Maria. Big, big thanks for this rare treasure.
Berman suona Schubert-Liszt in maniera unica...Grazie! 🌹

Belissimo recital, e inacreditavel o virtuosismo do Pianista Lazar Berman, obrigado por postar tao importante video.
I heard him live just once, but this was unforgettable. Phantastic piano-playing.

I realize I heard him on that first US tour in 1976. He played at Miami University, Ohio - drove up from Cincinnati. Must have liked - bought a couple LP's afterwards.
Indimenticabile.
seign edle gestalt , Grerchen this is best I have ever heard whether played or sung, because Mr. Berman sings it, so internal and eternal.
Been a fan of Berman for years but i had never actually seen him play. Thanks so much, that Mephisto Waltz is ridiculous.
Chu Telle pleasure. I agree it's fantastic.
+Chu Telle He was one of my THEE favorites...!
Berman was the first performer that I heard play the Mephisto Waltz, maybe in the early 70's.
yes 34,47 had to really slowly do that because he fluffed up a second before brilliant pianist though
@@MegaPianogenius he showed his experience by deal with that memory slip with grace 😎
He is the LEGEND.
So amazing and beautiful
What a pleasure to see and hear this recital. Lazar Berman was one of the first pianists whose playing I fell in love with when I was a kid (after all these years, I still cannot find a better performance of the Scriabin Fantasy than Berman's) 🎵🎶 😍
Beautiful! Thank you for posting!
merci
Crazy Mephisto Waltz with precise control
+Chien Weizer (Folorenz) and TOTAL conviction....
It's a real treat, thank you very much!
berlinzerberus my pleasure. Thanks for your great videos too.
berlinzerberus LOVED this mans playing... especially his LISZT!
gran pianista , que descanso oir musica
Beautiful and powerfully performed! Thank you!
In some ways, Lazar Berman surpasses Horowitz’ cantabile line: they are both alike thunderous and “sotto voce” pianists. Of course, VH’s legendary thundering octaves are as yet unsurpassed (check out his superhuman rendition of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto).
Technically, scores of pianists today can play with greater dexterity, but very few pianists can cap Berman’s tempestuous juggernaut of explosive notes reaching the zenith of the superhuman!!
With due respect to my friends with a slimmer frame of physical constitution, Lazar Berman and Vladimir Vladimir had the greatest contrast of dynamics: from pianissimo to fortissimo (Herculean).
Moreover, their singing line hovers above the inner voices with remarkable clarity.
True, they both had the “Claire de Lune” twilight tones, but also the most powerful display of sonorous, bulky octaves I have ever heard by any pianist.
May it is due to the Steinway piano?
Einer der besten Liszt-Spieler!
Thanks for sharing!
Greeaaat pianist. !!!! marvellous interpretation of Lizst'pieces memorable Mephisto Waltz just AMAZING
Incredible and with such vurtuosity.
Mephisto Waltz. Wow!
Berman's playing here seems to reflect his substantial interest in atonal music, something that can be discerned in most of his performances. It is particularly apparent in his interpretation of the usually lyrical Schubert.
Great thanks!
Ein großartiger Pianist!
wonderfull
Muchioss gratias

Magnificent!
mephisto waltz😍
Tiszta antiszemitizmus! A közönség minden egyes darab utàn ugy szivàrog ki mint a muzsikusok abban a bizonyos Haydn szinfoniàban! Szivfacsaro!! A legendàs pianista megprobàltàtasànak lehetünk tanui!
That "Ave Maria" is just INCREDIBLE. Music to lift the soul 🎼🎵🎶 (compare this performance to Lang Lang's meaningless scales and arpeggios withe same piece!)
A great performance indeed. The coda at 20:54 was like hearing it anew. When I hear other performances I will always be aware of those high notes he chooses to emphasize here.
What seems like a phenomenal performance. Such a pity that all the fortissimos are reduced to the same as the pianos, so that all the crescendi are completely missing; the feeling of building up to power is void. I am afraid that the younger generation, weened on RUclips, will miss out on the true effects intended here. Of course, live concerts are better!
imagine !! after this legendary Mephiisto, there are people there who doesnt clap !! it is because he plays it like everybody can do it, he lets it look like an art easiness..Berman- was really one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century- and the Russians should make their homework und make him famous- they didn´t !!
There will be not very much Bermans on this world.,
let him be not anymore so being "Underrated" !! let him gain his own greatest Reputation! You know it is not an Favour to him to do it so...It is a Must !!
I agree that Berman was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century; unfortunately, his international career was blighted during some of his best years by the Soviet authorities, who banned him from travelling for lengthy periods.
great!!! i wonder if theres CD or LP version of this play?
What is, about 2/3 or the way through? (Thank you!)
The information is in the box beneath the video
He sounds like Horowitz. Certainly took some inspiration
seems a little odd to start a recital with the last song of one of Schubert's last works
lsbrother why is that odd? Schubert’s lifespan has nothing to do with the other music.
I thought it was a master stroke. Great music doesn't have to be up-tempo.
Schubert's original song, (and Liszt's transcription), is pure lyrical genius.
It is about capturing the mood of darkness, and introspection.
With this song, Schubert was ahead of his time.

His recordings for the transcendental etudes are phenomenal. He should have recorded the first Mephisto Waltz during that same period. He was too old to get the big leaps correct on stage.
Something's obviously wrong with his health. I'm not sure I would have posted this.
