I've just finished watching this entire series on DVD, from start to finish, and I am HOOKED. All thanks to my dad. It was his favorite show. But after seeing the final episode of the series, I was left with a feeling of great disappointment, knowing that the show was cancelled abruptly in '81 and never received a proper sendoff. Those unresolved "cliffhangers" in the final episode, along with Jodie believing he was "Julius Kassendorf," (that whole storyline cracks me up) just left me wishing there'd been MORE episodes in the series to watch. 😑
In '95 Comedy Central aired the show at noon & after one episode I was hooked. I remember hearing the opening theme when it originally aired in the 70s but that was it. It's disappointing that it ended up getting canceled.
They showed this here in England around 1980, @ 10:30 on a Friday night. Why that late i don't know but, as a then 15 year old school boy i can tell you i LOVED it and still carry many happy memories of this utterly ludicrous and delightful American GEM in my memory to this day.I think my fav bits were Bob the dummy making Homophobic comments to Jodie and Jodie's revenges on Bob. Just been to see "CHUCK and BOB mindreading" here on You Tube. It is, if you have never seen the show, a PERFECT example of just how utterly insane this show and it's wonderful cavalcade of characters was and, thanks to You Tube, still IS!. The fact that the excellent "Golden Girls" came from the same stable will surprise no one.
I remember this being shown late at night on a Friday in the uk back in the late 70s. All I remember is my mum & dad loved it & that billy crystal lived in a cave for a few episodes!
Soap was an important if controversial TV series of the late 1970's. While I didn't watch it myself, I distinctly remember going to Catholic school one day and the nun principal coming into our class, closing the door and telling everyone to take out a sheet of paper and write down if you saw "Soap" the previous night. Obviously, someone had seen it and probably wrote something inappropriate on a bathroom wall or something, based on what they saw on the program. And all I could think to myself was that someone was in big trouble and I'm glad it wasn't me. RIP Katherine Helmond (Jessica Tate).
What an underated actor Richard Mulligan was. His portrayal of Custer in 'Little Big Man' is still the best. Incredible to think he could do that then do the lunacy of 'Burt'.
Im watchin an episode now for the first time in at least 2 decades on Antenna TV. I loved this show back in the day. Great music, lovely ladies, well written and acted, and it gives us something different than anything on cable these days.
As a kid growing up in a claustrophobic country household so messed up that I couldn't be sure whether I was the crazy one or whether that was everyone else, Soap seemed reassuringly, inspirationally zany to me. It made chaos seem cool, or if not cool then at least extremely entertaining. Underrated.
used to be on at 10.30pm in UK back in the day, i was probably 9 or 10yr old at the time but stayed up and loved this show.. when Burt met the ufo's was gold dust
I was only a child, living in the UK when this was aired (my Mum would let me stay up late at time's). Although i never totally understood what was going on, i somehow knew this Show was off the wall and pretty "crazy" in a funny, original way. It's getting late now and i must head off to bed, however i will check out more Soap in the coming days. Thank you for posting ;-)
I bought the entire series on DVD for my father last year for Father's Day (he was a huge fan of the show). I'm done with the first six episodes and it's very funny since I've never saw an episode before (heard about it, but never seen). The entire cast is great...but the best is definitely Richard Mulligan. My father said to me that to this day he still cracks up at every scene Mulligan was in "Soap." A classic example of why 1977 was the defining year for the 70's.
I caught this show back in the 90's when they would show it on Comedy Centrel.I used to DIE laughing everytime I watched it.I LOVED IT! My fav was always Bert and the way he would jump around and throw his hands in the air! Not to mention Chuck and Bob LOL
That's my uncle Rodney in the thumbnail. He is the guy in the background. Funny story, the director told him not to look at the camera but he wanted to get his full face, so he glances real quick and stares right at the camera for a split second.
Agreed. If it were up to me, though, right before the closing credits finished rolling, I would've had Rod say, "This is Rod Roddy speaking. 'Soap' is a Witt Thomas Harris Production."
I used to love this show. Would watch reruns as a kid. This was the first show that I knew that had a gay character and an interracial romance. This show to me was the first dramady. Loved it.
I recently watched all four seasons of Soap on DVD. One of the nice things about the show was there were some really hot women on that show, including Diana Canova (Corinne) Jennifer Salt (Eunice), Dinah Manoff (who played Danny's wife), Rebecca Balding (who played Jodie's girlfriend, Carol) and, of course my favorite, Katherine Helmond (Jessica).
i remember when this first aired on ABC in 1977, it was considered raunchy & controversial. Some ABC affiliates would only air it after 11pm. I think Billy Crystal's character was the first transvestite on tv at the time.
I love this intro. "Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together. It's- "oh wait, wrong show
I love the roof caving in on the family portrait!! Was this a rarely seen opening? I only remember the ones with the families coming to blows before the picture could be shot every year.
The opening title, after the recap of "last week's episode" is the short "standard version", usually with two variations at the end- the ceiling comes down, or a fight breaks out amongst the Tates and Campbells.
Something very evil about this show. I remember seeing it as a very young kid and always getting a dark feeling. No other show did that for me but this one did.
Is that really Rod Roddy? It doesn't sound like him. Even in interviews he did outside of The Price is Right, Rod's voice always sounded booming, just a little softer, but never this soft.
Soap didn't become Benson. The character of Benson was spun off into his own series in 1979, while Soap continued on for another two years (eventually with a new butler for the Tates, Saunders, played by Roscoe Lee Browne).
Seeing as how Rod used the word "help" a lot in the recap, it would made more sense if he said this for the clincher. "Need help figuring it all out? We'll help you if you help yourself to this episode of... 'Soap.'"
One of the best shows EVER.
Great intro.
Amen
Yes indeed
Fond memories of watching this with my parents Friday late nights on London Weekend Television circa 1980.

Rest in peace, Katherine. :(
Bless her, she seemed like a very nice woman 😢
She played deborahs mum in “Raymond” for a while too ❤️

My favorite TV sitcom growing up in 70's. Best casting, best writing! Fun & creative show!
it was said you wont be confused after this episode of soap but yes you just got more confused lol
I remember my whole family readied candy and sat in front on of the tv watching this and laughing and have nice time all together :)
Awesome show
Burt and the Aliens... Absolute classic.
Just tell me, is it silver?
Watching this again makes me feel like I'm up past my bedtime! ;)
The TV room and my bedroom were downstairs
I had to sneak into the tv room and listen with sound down and lights off
So true!
Im watchin an episode now for the first time in at least 2 decades on Antenna TV. I loved this show back in the day. Great music, lovely ladies, well written and acted, and it gives us something different than anything on cable these days.
The Big Screen Xperience totally agree with you.
This show was epic!! I loved it!! I miss it!!
I used to love sitting up late and watching this with my mum.
Fab stuff.
Glen McAllister
It was so surreal and weird. Especially that Jessica character.
Crazy but a great show.
👍🏿
Same
If I remember, Rod Roddy’s first big announcing job was on the sitcom Soap. Little did we know he would be announcing The Price Is Right years later!

"Confused? You won't be after this episode of "SOAP!"
I was whistling this intro song this morning. I forgot about this show ...😊😂
used to be on at 10.30pm in UK back in the day, i was probably 9 or 10yr old at the time but stayed up and loved this show.. when Burt met the ufo's was gold dust

this show is awesome! I have the dvd and even though it's dated, it's great comedy still.
this is the story of two sisters
Jessica Tate and Mary Campbell
These are the Tates and These are the Campbells
and this is SOAP
Im 25 and I watched soap with my dad couple months ago I love this show I think im going to rent all the seasons again
man i used to watch this all of time imiss the 90s
I never missed a show, brilliant
Loved watching this as a kid in the 80s
The irony was Rod's work on this show inspired his later show to do a showcase that was a takeoff on it that Rich Fields did.
Do you remember more details about the showcase?

One of the best shows ever!!!
I LOVED this show, Chuck and Bob were my favorite, Bob was a pistol wasn't he?
A Very underrated comedy. Like Raiders said, "...32 years ahead of its time".
Could hear the theme music when I woke up this morning 😂😂😂
I caught this show back in the 90's when they would show it on Comedy Centrel.I used to DIE laughing everytime I watched it.I LOVED IT! My fav was always Bert and the way he would jump around and throw his hands in the air! Not to mention Chuck and Bob LOL
this show was nuts but I like it
One of the funniest shows ever!!
My god, it's 1977 all over again when i see this.
That's my uncle Rodney in the thumbnail. He is the guy in the background. Funny story, the director told him not to look at the camera but he wanted to get his full face, so he glances real quick and stares right at the camera for a split second.
Never knew it was protested, what a shame, loved it.
I just found that channel last night and got to watch one of my favorites shows SOAP!!!
In case you don't got the DVD yet, it is now shown on Antenna TV. Check your local listings for the channel.
Voiced by the late Rod Roddy, eho was the second greatest announcer on The Price Is Right.
I remember this coming on Comedy Central back in the 90s
I like the part the house is falling apart and they everyone is sitting ha!
The spoof they did of the Exorcist was the best!
Confused? You won’t be… after this episode of “SOAP”!
that was a great show
Agreed. If it were up to me, though, right before the closing credits finished rolling, I would've had Rod say, "This is Rod Roddy speaking. 'Soap' is a Witt Thomas Harris Production."
You can see Billy Crystal grimacing here before the impact
Its funny when you watch these old tv intros to see how many future stars are on the shows.
Good memories!
We produce our own UK based soap
Bushroads - Episode 1
R I P Richard Mulligan aka Burt, who went on to Empty Nest and Rod Roddy, the announcer! Had to believe that is a YOUG Billy Crystal!
man my childhood
I used to love this show. Would watch reruns as a kid. This was the first show that I knew that had a gay character and an interracial romance. This show to me was the first dramady. Loved it.
Happy 40th anniversary, Soap!

Confused? You will/won't be after this episode of The Mandela Effect. 90% remember this as being "will be"
tha Sarge is the 600 like! These were the days...loved Soap..
Rod Roddy’s most famous non-Price role
I love the roof caving in on the family portrait!! Was this a rarely seen opening? I only remember the ones with the families coming to blows before the picture could be shot every year.
The opening title, after the recap of "last week's episode" is the short "standard version", usually with two variations at the end- the ceiling comes down, or a fight breaks out amongst the Tates and Campbells.
and also played Debra's mother Lois in Everybody Loves Raymond!
Billy Crystals & Blossom's Dad
OMG, that's right. I think he was also in a funk music group called Was Not Was.
@@erichatcher5415 That was Don Was.
Of course, both "Soap" and "Blossom" were Witt-Thomas productions.
Casey Kasem was the original narrator, he only did the pilot
The story of "Soap" is woefully incomplete without Robert Guillome, who ended up stealing the show, most of the time
Magic...
Something very evil about this show. I remember seeing it as a very young kid and always getting a dark feeling. No other show did that for me but this one did.
R.I.P. Jessica Tate
I just wished they did a final fifth season to give it a proper ending
Yes, Ted Wass played Danny Dallas on this show.
Rod Roddy does the narration if you didn’t know.
A very funny show.

@videozfann - Yes, he was the Tate's butler and went on to star in his own sitcom.
@postoffice56
This is the first place just about anybody saw Billy Crystal, it was his tv debut.
Longest intro ever!! But it was good.
LOL not sneak to see it. It was hilarious then and more now. I have Time Warner Cable. You'll have to check your cable listings.
Classic!!!!
Rod Roddy’s voice
this is rooooooooood rooooooooddddddy
4 people are still confused after this weeks episode of ... SOAP!
@shakeymomm You mean the 70's lol!
@00:33 That woman looks like the mother in Who's The Boss.
jtomally9681
ya that's her
Was this Rod Roddy's debut?
What is the tittle of the music??
@VaultMasterDBT Saunders was a trip!
Mary Campbell should’ve crossover to Benson too
