    ....y'know, now that Bonnie Franklin passed away, I'm REALLY respecting her acting chops on this criminally underrated Classic TV series; We KNOW David's wrong for cutting that check for flighty-ass Julie, but Ann's quiet seething, and hand gestures, speak VOLUMES (check the 'Im'ma kill Him' hand-wringing at 1:18)...
    Ann is a SINGLE Mother, creating a 'template' of right & wrong, for her Teen Daughters to follow, & has her own neuroses about it; Bonnie throws everything into that character, and NOW, we can see it HONESTLY, in these trying times...BRAVURA, Bonnie, a 'REAL' TV Mother....

    My mother would have definitely declined, and probably ripped up a huge check too, had a family member ever offered to pay for something super expensive when I was growing up in the '80s.
    That's just the way she was.
    She always taught us that it was better to EARN things rather than have them handed to us directly.

    Okay, I'm only saying this cause I saw this episode, but Julie is full on wrong and so is David. First Ann is trying to stand on her two feet to be independent after her divorce, even though she loves David, he crossed the line of Ann's reason why she wanted her divorce, which was to manage her life her way. As a single mother she's trying to make a decent living for both her daughters, but Julie is too selfish to see it that way. In this episode Julie is desperate to be BFFs with a popular rich girl, but Julie don't care about her place and is practically begging on her knees for expensive things, new clothes, new suitcases, and even transferring to an expensive private school, which if you even knew Julie's character, she would have just dropped out and ran off with her boyfriend to get marriage, a huge waste of money not only shot out the window but money for her sister's own needs and her mother's. It's true seeing Julie throwing a tantrum is funny but Ann did it had a good reason to rip the check David gave her, she doesn't want to accept a handout, even though David insisted she take it, but David just ignore Ann's side. Ann was smart and was trying to settle things with Julie, that they can't afford a high luxury. I mean Julie thinks her mom is being selfish but she's being a honest, they can't afford it, plain as it is. David isn't a bad guy, but wants to help and that upsets Ann because she was dependent on her husband in her previous marriage. David is clueless. Barbara even knows that the girl Julie is desperate to be friends with is shallow and selfish, but again she's ignore. In the end Julie finds out her new 'friend' didn't invite her and just cries about it. It's not Ann's fault, not her sister's fault, not David's fault, but it was all on Julie trying to ask for life more exciting than her own.

      I agree. If my daughter threw hissy fits like a 3 yr old she would have been grounded, Every single time.

    • @millenniumman75
      @millenniumman75 5 лет назад +1

      Smacked, not grounded. No 16 year old would act like that. Watching Julie throw that fit, I was like "hmmm withdrawals?" We never hear about this "Beverly" ever again - this was still a 1975 episode. For all we know, her family would have gone bankrupt in Indianapolis and she'd be on the streets, peddling for change and more on Meridian St. a full year before Julie decides to run away from home with "Chuck" in a four-part story arc beginning season 2 in 1976.
