Seeing this again after all of these years and again I am laughing so hard I am crying. An incredible show with a phenomenal cast. Confused? You won't be after next weeks episode !!!!
Gee I remember this scene so well. Jessica was hilarious. I was a super fan of this show back in the early 80's. I had to go to school, but I would watch it every night even if most of the family were already in bed.
So i’m reading as i watch the clip. When i read _THIS_ comment, i checked the time & it was 0:47! Like _ONE_ _SECOND_ from the exact time you mentioned! i dunno, seems crazy. 😵💫 Anyhoo, i agree with you. i’ve been a Billy Crystal fan since i discovered him on Soap & imo he DID almost crack up. 🤭 Who would be surprised? lol i certainly laughed _MY_ ass off, she was FREAKING HILARIOUS! 😆 The entire cast of Soap was _AWESOME!_ One of my favorite sitcoms ever, it was EPIC!! … oh wow, just remembering my favorite character - Robert Guillaume as Benson! Soo _SAD_ when he left Soap 🥺 but i did end up perusing & loving Benson too. Plus we _DID_ get to see way more of Robert. … Hmnn … think it’s time to research & rewatch these old programs. They’re certainly SOO MUCH BETTER than anything on TV nowadays! 😬
I think it was because they had a one-night stand and the (awful) girl got pregnant. That arc was incredible, Billy played Jody with such... i can't even think of the words, he was just wonderful. But anyway, Jody later sues for custody of his child. Very ahead of its time, still moving and I highly recommend watching the whole series, really. It was so good.
I wonder if Susan Harris based Rose Nyland’s personality on Jessica. They seem pretty similar, except for the emphasis on Rose’s Scandinavian heritage.
I knew I was gay watching this scene back then and in the 90's in reruns as a teenager struggling and fighting my sexuality. I will always love Billy Crystal. I remember when he (Jodie, not Billy) tried to kill himself
The speech that Harold Gould gives after Jodie takes the pills is one of the best pieces of writing and acting I’ve ever seen on TV. He talked about straight love as if it wasn’t any different than gay love...and in the 70s. One of my favorite Jodie lines was when some one asked him: “Are you a practicing homosexual.” And Jodie responded off the cuff and with confidence: “I don’t have to practice. I’m very good at it.”
Chuck and Bob once read a letter silently together. Bob got to the bottom of the first page before Chuck and was waiting for him to turn over. Anyone got a copy?
god bless and keep you Katherine, I adored you in soap, you made me laugh , and you made me cry, and I have to be honest, back then I had a huge crush on you. Because of your character
Yeah they were hoping for a 5th season. I was reading it had to do with sponsor issues and you're still was some controversy about issues they covered in the show.
Oh how cool! I haven't seen this show but for a few episodes on Nick at Nite at like 3am in a very long time. I'm actually downloading all 4 seasons right now from Pirate Bay. I can't wait to watch them again.
Sweet! Just remember to pace yourself. There are alot of episodes to go through, and some of the jokes are so subtle you might not catch them all the first time around. :)
I was just watching the show today on Pluto TV. It was fun to watch but they didn't push they're views on children. It was just a funny show. If I overstepped the guidelines apologize.
+Barbara Powers I'm sick of shows in America that try purposely to make gay people seem "normal." There's no discussion. No conflict. Nobody learns anything. It's like network TV is afraid of offending someone. Guess what? If we are anything as human beings, we're NOT normal. Gay, straight, whatever. But we don't have characters on TV who dare to be different. I love All the Family and the Jeffersons for their fearlessness. They dare to let bigots be bigots and they hopefully learn something along the way. And nobody is judged. They're not bad people. They're just ignorant. Even Archie Bunker, who is a good man but a product of his upbringing and who visibly tries his damnedest to do the right thing, even if his prejudices get the best of him. This is television I love.
Okay I agree about the old sitcoms but this one here is not one to use as an example of something that is about something, this is my favorite comedy of all time and part of the reason is because it was about a whole lot of nothing. Just the writers seeing how far-fetched they can make the next season
Poor Billy Crystal's trying not to lose it during
this scene... classic!!
I LOVED Soap! Bless my parents for letting me watch it when i was really young. Classic. I wish they re-ran it on tv.
They have it on the retro channel where I live. They run marathons of it. Classic goodness. Lol.
how long do you think this show would make it today with cancel culture and all.
Legendaric
@@danielcorreard3746about as long as All In The Family
Seeing this again after all of these years and again I am laughing so hard I am crying. An incredible show with a phenomenal cast. Confused? You won't be after next weeks episode !!!!
Couldn't get enough of Billy Crystal!
Mary was so wonderful. So smart and demure. The poor thing always tried to be so together in such a tornado of craziness all around her.
This show was so far ahead of its time.
Katherine Helmond (July 5, 1929 - February 23, 2019). Rest In Peace Jessica.
We had the best sitcoms in the seventies.
Good Lord, 1970s/80s Billy Crystal was 🔥. That smile could launch a 1,000 ships!!!
I love how the actor is cracking up
Gee I remember this scene so well. Jessica was hilarious. I was a super fan of this show back in the early 80's. I had to go to school, but I would watch it every night even if most of the family were already in bed.
RIP Katherine Helmond. There really was no one else like her. Check out at 0:48 when she nearly cracks up Billy Crystal.
I saw that too. I kind of wondered if that was not part of the scrip but simply an ad lib.
@@generatorx Yeah I dont think he nearly cracks up there. That looks like it was just part of what the character would react to.

_MY_ ass off,
she was FREAKING HILARIOUS! 😆

Jessica is so damn love-able! i love this show.
i haven’t seen the show but it’s looks funny. why is he getting married to who im assuming a woman if he is gay ?
Agree,Jessica was the heart & soul.
I think it was because they had a one-night stand and the (awful) girl got pregnant. That arc was incredible, Billy played Jody with such... i can't even think of the words, he was just wonderful. @@amylynnhunt55 He played Jodie with such a dignity and honesty that no matter what the climate back then was, you loved this character.
I wonder if Susan Harris based Rose Nyland’s personality on Jessica. They seem pretty similar, except for the emphasis on Rose’s Scandinavian heritage.
The writing was great, the cast was awesome. Bert was my favorite!
One of the most memorable and most hilarious scenes in TV.
Same here. I remember when it first aired. My mom and I laughed until we were crying.
Rest in Peace Jessica Tate, you will be missed!
Along with Mary, Chester and Benson
As will Jeffy and the Family sir Cussed.
Also, do I get orange maryjane socks too?
V Green Show of Fit.
Katherine Marie Helmond (July 5, 1929 - February 23, 2019 My condolences to her friends and family.
A classic scene from a series that had so many of them.
“Goofy was his lover”
So that’s how Max came from!!
I knew I was gay watching this scene back then and in the 90's in reruns as a teenager struggling and fighting my sexuality. I will always love Billy Crystal. I remember when he (Jodie, not Billy) tried to kill himself

This episode was on the channel AntennaTV tonight. That scene floored me.lol
I used to watch this show with my dad late at night when it first aired in the UK, and we howled with laughter. Miss you Dad.
LOVED this show!!
Got to see this show being filmed live with my Teen Club in 7th grade. Genius show!
Chuck and Bob once read a letter silently together. Bob got to the bottom of the first page before Chuck and was waiting for him to turn over. Anyone got a copy?
Bob always flirted with Jessica, and they all talked to Bob like he was real. Then the Colonel, shell shocked and stuck in WW2.
The acting in scene is brilliant; it’s the facial expressions on Jody’s & Jessica’s that just makes it hysterical
One of the best comedy scenes ever
This is my absolute fav. TV show of all time.
RIP Katherine Helmond. She was amazing.
I was there when they were first broadcast and have them all on DVD. I just wish they had carried it on after they cancelled it on a cliffhanger.
0:32 That sounds more like Edith Bunker's reaction in All in the family.
well Jessica was just as dimwitted as Edith, only more classier
Oh that's awesome! This is one of my favorite shows ever.
I'm watching the first season right now. I downloaded all 4 from Pirate Bay. It's comedy gold.
Never heard of PirateBay, till now. Ty!!!
How they could have picked any better actors is beyond me. And I have NO FAVORITES in this show. Love'em all!
They must have all laughed like crazy after this take was over lmao
Billy was barely holding it together.
This and "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman ", were two humorous satire shows
god bless and keep you Katherine, I adored you in soap, you made me laugh , and you made me cry, and I have to be honest, back then I had a huge crush on you. Because of your character
Mickey Mouse's dog was gay? Best line ever!!!
And they considered that shocking back then.
+MrHeadbanger366 If you want shocking ALL IN THE FAMILY would get protested by oversensitive pc media of today.
I remember watching All in the Family when I was a kid and you're right, they would.
No, they didn't
It's kind of hard to win, being over 30. :) Oh well, we got to watch Soap!
Susan Harris pure genius!
Who doesn't love Jessica Tate?
Not anyone I know except me remembers "mi puerco de ganas". I was only like 7 and I still remember only that to this day and I am in my 50s.
I agree. They just don't make them like this anymore.
This was the funniest show on TV at the time. The only show that was making people laugh out loud, (literately). So, that had to take it off the air.
Yeah they were hoping for a 5th season. I was reading it had to do with sponsor issues and you're still was some controversy about issues they covered in the show.
The later seasons weren't as good. Susan Harris would launch great shows, but would pass on the writing duties to less talented writers.
R.i.p Jessica.!!!
This was the first scene I thought of when I heard that Katherine had died. She was a FUNNY lady...
I use this scene as a sort of therapy, just luv IT
Katherine helmond was priceless
I never watched this show consistently but it was funny.
One of the best scenes in television history.
So was the one where the possessed baby levitated Jodie, and Bobs line was "look a fruit fly", lol.
You're right. I forgot about that one! lol
I have yet to find that clip here on You tube?, lol
It was! I always remember that joke! Lol
@kranktank yes, it was broadcast in front of a live studio audience.
Oh how cool! I haven't seen this show but for a few episodes on Nick at Nite at like 3am in a very long time. I'm actually downloading all 4 seasons right now from Pirate Bay. I can't wait to watch them again.
Katherine helmond was priceless in this role
RIP Cathryn Damon (Mary Campbell).
9/11/30 - 5/4/87.
The follow up conversation to "Stand By Me" and "what the hell is Goofy"
how I loved this show........funny wasn't the word, histerical was.....oh but where is season 5? Why oh why can't we have another series, lol
Sweet! Just remember to pace yourself. There are alot of episodes to go through, and some of the jokes are so subtle you might not catch them all the first time around. :)
The show Benson was a spin off of this show.
Thought Benson was terrific,too!
Was this show broadcast live?
@yeahmedude As the late Rod Roddy said at the end of each episode from late 1977 to 1980. He stopped doing it the last season though. :(
god my heart rate this is so funny
Love this!
Mickey Mouse's dog was gay??
RIP Katherine Helmond..
oh, god, I need to watch this show.
If only there were still no such things as anything--but heterosexuals and asexuals
This is funny. Hands down. And who honesty believes that Jessica thought Plato from Disney fame is real?
Billy Crystal was only 29 at the time
Jovan Parker My Dad went to HS with him :)
micky mouses dog was gay??????
Goofy was his lover
Billy Crystal was skin and bones when he was young I see.
Soap! So much yay!
I was just watching the show today on Pluto TV. It was fun to watch but they didn't push they're views on children. It was just a funny show. If I overstepped the guidelines apologize.
Never thought of that but I see it. It's the facial expressions.
Rest in Peace Nice lady
Whatever happened to great American sitcoms? Shows that were ABOUT something.
Ain't that the truth!
+Barbara Powers I'm sick of shows in America that try purposely to make gay people seem "normal." There's no discussion. No conflict. Nobody learns anything. I bet disney was cringing back then
Back when you could Troll Disney and not be sued.
Phil, Terre Queen !
I'm not getting that!
@bbmcrae Classic line
Goofy was his lover
LMAO
Free speech man.
I love Jessie so much! XDXD
The Now current voice of Mickey Mouse is actually a homosexual and married to a another man
Epic!!
The right wing forced ABC to pull this show. So much for the right wing not being about getting things cancelled. THEY INVENTED IT!
Interesting theory lol
poor jessica
still makes me laugh like a loon
It's funny because they say the word gay
Laugh about this back then they did little did they know what Disney would become
I really miss shows that were allowed to be funny
So do I.
😝😀😁🤪👍👍
Thanks for everything! Here’s a little something for you: ruclips.net/video/ZFgro4GnnT4/видео.html
They just don't make good shows like these any more. the 70s had better television shows back then.
And this ladies and gentlemen is how Trump got elected.
