- THE SUNDANCE CENTRAL RAILROAD - The Sundance was formed in January 2004 with the goal to create a more detailed and uniformly scened, large-scale traveling layout. This 1:20.3 scale modular model railroad consisting of forty modules for a layout size of 45 feet by 45 feet. The railroad consists of 400 feet of hand laid code 250 aluminum rails that are hand spiked with individual tie plates onto wood ties with a total of 16 turn-outs.
The modular was built by a group of seven model train enthusiasts. This diverse group is made up of people who have a passion of early narrow gauge steam locomotives to modern day standard gauge diesels.
The purpose for forming this modular group was to provide the public a realistic look at model railroading in a large-scale format. The modules are highly detailed from the scratch built supporting structures and buildings down to the surrounding scenery. The trains and rolling stock that will be running on these modules will also be highly detailed and weathered.

So well done, I was waiting for some of those people to wave at me!
This Train layout is one of the coolest one’s I have ever seen.
The detail is at an astonishing level.
What a fantastic layout. I even saw "the Duke" John Wayne standing beside the track!
This layout is stunning . All of a sudden your in 1920 on a wonderful sunny day
A "like" seems hardly the compliment for the fine craftsmanship and videography. Thanks for sharing this inspirational look at such a fine model railroad.
What a beautiful shay locomotive, pushing all that timber , down the track straight from the big forest
The artistry and creativity of modeler is outstanding. Are those moose horns or elk horns on the head light?
the detail! from John Wayne at the station, to the little man climbing the tree to cut it, to the engineer with hands in his pockets as the locomotive pushes the tree logs in the front container, over the bridge...with the cows with happy restful faces in the side lawn next to the old house....WOW.
It's so nice.
I feel like I'm going back in time to a in the 18ths look out
At the world wine you heard a nice we your love one .
Thankyou so much for take me back in time ⏲
Have a wonderful day.
Your fan Sandra. 😇
P.s. keep up the wonderful work you do for us 🇺🇸
One of the most beautiful mountain logging railroads that I've ever seen.
I rememeber way back in the day, early 80's, my dad built a 4 x 8 foot HO layout for himself, me and my brother as a.christmas gift for the 3 of us to work on together. He had a subscription to Model Railroader starting in 81 or 82, and one of the layouts I remember most from thise early days was Malcom Furlow's Dan Juan Central which this reminds me of. The amount of fine details and scenery skills that these narrow gauge layouts have is unreal. They truly show that like any model railroader will say, is that no railroad layout is ever truly finished. Some of these are about as close as you can get but there is always room for a few more trees or details. I always wanted to see what Malcom could do with a much larger area and using standard guage and newer era models. While he did make a couple slightly larger layouts over the following years, I figured that I would never see a layout with that level of detail only much larger allowing the use of longer mainline trains. That all ended when I saw an article and even recent videos of George Sellios' layout. It is on a completley different level than anything that most likely exists. Not only is it basically huge, it is covered in literally hundreds of scratch build structures that would take even a good builder months to recreate. If you dont know about this layout and you like things like this you need to do a quick search and watch videos about it. You wont believe what you see. Many of these layouts here on youtube, this one included are proof that there are modelers that have rediculous skills that is normal builders can only dream about, and one day I hope to be able to not only see some of these in person, but also be able to be able to add some of these awesome features to my own layout... Well done guys, very well done...
All you need are sparks shooting out of the smokestacks... Wow, what a railroad.
wow. its like a different altnerantive fantasy "studio built" world. Cool, greatness. The detail is tremendous. ITS ART.
This is beyond art on all forms and superbly thought out. The sad part is that at some time life will happen and it will have to be removed, sold, scrapped, etc. We’ve all seen it happen. While it exists though the value of it truly belongs to the creator and to we the viewers who are privileged to see it. The Red Stag layout of around 2001, by the now deceased Geoff Knott was sold. Professionally boxed up, then disappeared into someone’s private collection. This is a rarity.
One word...WOW!
This is amazing! I love the F&C (I have the book!). Also a friend from long ago, Russ Simpson (Simpson PRoducts) was a West Side fan in the Sierra Foothills.
I just wish some of the bigger model railroad clubs would use such detail in their projects. They have the manpower, time and money. Yet they mostly concentrate on track layout and some scenery but not the detail you see on this
I was a member of an O scale club on Long Island in the 1970s. We had an average of 25 members and 25 opinions about everything. A camel is jokingly a result of a planning and engineering group.
Give this club a blue ribbon for Excellence! I loved the sounds of the birds and the whistle with the smoke out of 1 of the locomotives, but it lacks night running and switching out of trains! The Russian Railroad layout is BEST OF ALL!
This is a gift that just keeps giving and giving..
I love to look at your set up. All the details. I will look at it 3 to 5 times over and over.
WOW! This is great!
Excellent detail, landscaping, structures and structure details. This is a phenomenal layout that one could watch repeatedly and spot detail previously missed. Congrats! Extremely well designed and constructed.
That’s amazing. The attention to every detail, right down to the last bit of dried up grass along the track.
and the birds chirping, who thinks of adding bird noises to their layout. so good
Chain those logs Mr.!!🤣
Great layout! Love the detail. Love the sounds coming from the trains. I could sit and watch this all day. I am currently assembling a 1:12 scale Victorian dollhouse. I am trying to put as much realism in it as possible. I've always had a deep affinity for the small scale world, I've been a collector since the age of 5. The old bubble gum machines had the best gems, I've incorporated some of them into my dollhouse. I even got a dollhouse sized metal train set in it. My neighbor does this type of train sets except his was portable table top. I want to someday help him to set up a permanent sight where we both can enjoy it on a daily basis when we are home, as we are both truck drivers and are on the road most of the time.
I would dearly love to come see this in person some day though. Great job!❤
My brain CANNOT comprehend the detail and TIME this person put into doing this I want them to teach me
Instablaster.
I liked it so much, I moved to Fiddletown!
Love the model of JohnWayne at 2.50
The detail is insane!. :D
Well, I have never seen anything like this detail, it's as good as a film set, and the number of hours and money put into this lovely layout is worth every penny to be enjoyed by us all around the Globe on RUclips, our thanks to the cameraman and all who played a part in the build.
It does look like a film set. and yes, let us not forget the cameraman who brought this "world" alive to us.
What you are seeing here is the finest and most beautiful model railroad ever built. Nothing world wide mind you, compares with it. This is a work of art. Each scene is an acurate descripion of what life was like near these railroads. What would be reasonably seen within close easment of the tracks and stations. This model railroad is a sculpture. A biopic. Truly stunning in its scope, and breathtaking in its depth of vision. A mind blowing achievement. Congratulations is an understatement. Simply beautiful.
Good to see the running locomotives crewed, which seems to a phenomena overlooked on so many layouts, and thus there goes any semblance of realiism. Great set-up.
I'm not normally into the electric models that are meant to resemble steam and diesel trains with the sounds and smoke effects and so on but I will admit these are the best electric models of steam/diesel trains I have ever seen, they are so well made they don't look plastic until you get a really close shot at them. The dust and dirt effects are done so well and the rust detail also. Not to mention the absolutely stunning realism of the landscape and buildings. I've seen some good artists but this is unbelievable, I shutter to think how much it would cost to buy a setup like this from an artist of this caliber, the trains alone would cost a bomb.
Not gonna lie, your wording was really cringe….
@@fantump00p3r4 Not going to lie, I don't care what you think.
Just Incredibly AWESOME SIRS!!!! SOUCH PASSION, & SUCH DETAIL!! I Can;t even Begin to Imagine what it's like to "SEE IT" in person, IT MUST BE Completely OVERWHELMING!!!! OUTSTANDING JOB to the Men who Accomplished this Modelling FEAT of Excellence!! AAAAA+++++, & 6 STARS to ALL of You!!
INCREDIBLE layout, the details are amazing it looks REAL.SERIOUS time and money.👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
This is more than a model railroad it is truly a work of art
WOW! The detail and realism is phenomenal! Thunderstorms, projected fire and waterfalls, the fire in the tree, the automated figures and those elk horns on the Shay Lamp! So many "firsts" to see on a layout!
Too much to see in one viewing...a work of art!
Hats off to the artists that engineered this!
The photographer did an excellent job too!
I would say the body in the coffin on the hearse has extreme rigor mortis to look at. Every thing in the layout is fabulous!!
this scene is very beautiful , with this train passing by , congratulations for the video
Thank you very much!
This layout is INSANE....right up there with the Franklin and Manchester RR
I'm in love with this layout....SO well done, SO Much imagination
BEAUTIFUL
Thank you. The most enjoyable and beautiful hobby in the world 🚥
That is absolutely insane. Best I have ever seen. ❤❤❤
MAGNIFICANT LAYOUT.
The whistle echoing in the distance, the birds chirping, the bugs buzzing about. If it wasn't for the fact I was watching it I would swear I was up the mountain sitting by the tracks sipping on some lemonade with a touch of Grandpa's "stuff".
OK. I've never really thought of myself as one of those "Narrow Gauge" types. But this layout is almost singlehandedly converting me. This is just phenomenal.
Most realistic layout I have ever seen, just fantastic 🎉
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. The lighting, the sounds of Nature, the varying sounds of speed, the landscape, the trees and grasses, the little creek, the cattails, the bridge and river beneath, and on and on. I grew up in Northern Idaho near a train track in a little lumber town called Troy. And I sware I recognized the place... and half the people, including the Peterson's cows. I even remember that crooked log... a devil to cut down at the mill. And was that an old outhouse? I didn't see a crescent moon above the door but I hope it had a good Sears & Sorebutts catalog in it. Thanks so much. The finest I've ever seen. It may belong in the Smithsonian at some point. What love you've shown! Congratulations.
AMAZING !!!! ❤ BEAUTIFUL JOB!!
I can watch this over and over. So lifelike I can imagine myself in that time. That layout IS a work of art. Thank you for posting!!
How can anyone thumbs down this video it is without a doubt one of the best layouts I have seen, and the filming of it is first rate great job thank you.
Phil Byrne Well, I gave it a 'thumbs down' because none of the little people or animals moved.
@@johncraske LOL
Totalement incroyable !!! On atteint la perfection dans le détail et la précision. Merci pour cet excellent moment de pur bonheur.
I look at this layout at least once a week, it brings me back to the good days. Although I wasn't around for real steam engines it still just makes me feel good, thanks for the great entertainment the detail is unbelievable, great job.
George Sellios detail. And who can't love a Shay. A work of mechanical art is the 15. And the scene at 35:40 is priceless. Superb layout...and in hi-def!! Excellent vid!
a work of art love genius.......hats off....gorgeous........a completely realized microcosm.....don't ever dismantle...worth a fortune in money and excellence. "Moreover"...it's wonderful...I hope you guys keep working and posting the results....
An extraordinary effort was made in the construction of this remarkable diorama. Well done to the people involved in the project!!!
The best details on the net!!
Fantastic !
Talking About Details on a Layout holy Boiler explosion That Layout is if not the Best it’s up there.
I have watched this video several times. This is THE BEST video of THE BEST layout I have ever seen. Your ability to capture the scenes in the manner you did is outstanding. Great job. Thanks for sharing. 👏
Thank you so much!!!
That Shay locomotive is crazy cool to watch it roll past. Beautifully detailed layout.
What a masterpiece!
A tribute to persistance and a wonderful inpiration to all of us modellers of what is possible.
Congratulations to the creators!
As wonderful as videos of this modular layout are, seeing it live is even more impressive. There is lots more detail not shown in these train videos that add to the character and evoke a sense of time, place and purpose of this narrow gauge operation. In this large scale, one can really see and appreciate these fine details.
Outstanding 👍
Nice work and beautiful layout !
Incredible layout.
This whole layout is basically a snapshot of life in 1920s Appalachia America. EXCELLENCE OF EXECUTION IN THE DETAILING!!!!!!!!
You've captured the essence of realism and scale Billy LI N.Y.
Congratulations Team!!! This group of hightly skilled Craftsmen and Artisans have created the most highly detailed, most diversified and most beautiful Model Railroad EVER!!! You have done wonders!!! This marvelous creation certainly should have a space reserved for it in a large metropolitan museum somewhere!!! May I suggest The Smithsonian??? THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!! Thank You for your hard work and dedication!!! You will all go down in history as 'The Greatest Model Railroaders Ever'!!!
Everything is looking fabulous. Adding trees not only adds dimension but it also gives an immediate sense of satisfaction. They just took your layout over the edge with the already realistic scenes that you had. I appreciate how you present this information to us and give us links to the various vendors, tutorials, etc. Congrats on your wonderful work!
How beautiful!
fantastic layout, I hope to have mine look that good someday. Love the logging operation and vintage equipment and scenes depicted
Tudo nessa maquete e espetacular realmente uma obra prima
Simply incredible!
Beautiful and realistic
beautiful!
When the video first started I thought I was really in that time period, beautiful just beautiful.
Magnificent Layout Design and Superb Modeling . Only thing is I wish the photographer showed more of the Details and structures and less of the Two trains running continually . The Trains are Awesome in Detail and running , But too much time spent on "Just the trains " Not enough time in showing the other details of the layout ...
Hope to see another Video sometime : ) Thanks for Sharing !

Makes me feel like I went back in time! AMAZING detail. Best I've seen.
Have never seen a railroad so detailed and realistic. Can't imagine how many hours and the cost that went into this fine piece of work.
This is awesome. Talented people with a great vision.
Amazing work.
Well done.👍
Enchanted.
Wow I’m amazed at all the detail, it’s truly remarkable. A real work of Art. The landscaping and buildings are so realistic. Must have taken a long time to build.
Pennsylvania bro is where I'm watching from 👍👍
Was that John Wayne at around 3:30? Nice layout. Can I come over and play?
Jedna z piękniejszych makiet kolejowych :)
Nice drone flybys and John Wayne is there 3:20 👍😜
I noticed too John Wayne still alive.
L.O.L.
Is that Kirk Douglas in Big Trees in denim ?. Too much whistle/bell makes steam pressure evaporate !.😅😅. Just WOW creator. Best regards from UK tribe. Dave
Great place to visit, it's a hidden gem. I miss seeing my old friend Dale.
amazing detail, surprisingly lifelike. excellent video
Thank you very much!
Just when you think. Well it can't be any better, YOU see something like this. OMG!
That is beautiful. One of the best I've ever seen.
It’s a work of art. Beautiful.
Extraordinary!
A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout, but I doubt mine will be quite as detailed as this.
Super! Mi piace moltissimo!
I wish (a big word) I started a railroad years ago. Finely retired from US steel and setting up a old Marx set that`s been in the house for 60+ years.
Wooow very very nice I'll bet that layout took a long time to build and it looks very very detailed and love the sounds
Absolument magnifique , que ce soit le matériel ou le décor 🤗 Et toujours aussi bien filmée 👍👍👍
Merci beaucoup mon Ami!!! j'apprécie vraiment cela!!!
