This should be the theme song for *EVERY* Senior High School class. Because you don't realize what you're about to lose & just how much your life is about to change.
Absolutely his best song ever; melodically, lyrically, it's the total package. If he'd only written this and Piano Man, it would be enough. Taking it one step further, Piano Man and Turn the Lights Back On are the book-ends, with this masterpiece in the middle.
This song is haunting beautiful. You can feel the desolation and promise in every note of the music and the lyrics are almost a beautiful afterthought. Magical!
I’ve known this song to be exactly what you described since the first time I heard it years ago. Paints a vivid picture, more than most music really can.
HUGE fan of Billy Joel, but this song is something else. The Piano is just 100% on this live version. The guitar at 3:21 wails of haunting nostalgia. Then the lyrics “But holding you close is like holding the summer sun / I'm warm from the memory of days to come.” Completely masterful! Joel’s vocals on this are just superb, the guy is a treasure. He’ll never read this , but I thank him for the sounds that he brought into my life.
This song was my senior prom song in 1988. And our class theme song. When we had our 25 th reunion, this was played again. Thank you Billy your music was the soundtrack of my teenage years
Those were the day's of Superstars - they are never coming back - i am very glad i was growing up in the 80's some of best or maybe simply the best music was composed during the period. Love this tune - The piano man - there will be no other like him.
this song makes me sad. one of the most precious things in life is time. and time can go by so quickly. don't wait to create the life you dream of. don't wait for a single second because life can pass you by so easily and then it's too late.
@@Gator400 but would you go back and change it? cuz those mistakes may have brought you to places you wouldn't hesitate to keep in your memories.....some mistakes bring much joy later in life. what we need to think about is today.
....every time I hear this song it makes me think of when things were much more simpler, Fun...I. glad I was there and here now...it's Nostalgic (we) had the best musicians, those that agree know who u are 😉
Agreed. I just saw another clip where David reunited with Billy after 30+ years and they did this song live at MSG in 2022. Great to see that they’re still friends.
This brings back a great memory with my late father who went to Penn State on a football scholarship. NBC played this when Penn State beat the Miami Hurricanes to win the 86 National Title. I miss my father.
This needs a remaster DVD release BAD. What a vocal on this...it's not the easiest to sing live! Love this song, my favorite from The Bridge, hands down.
This hit from Billy Joel was the 500th #1 song on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts. It was also the first new #1 song on the AC charts, knocking off Billy Ocean (Love Is Forever). I saw Billy Joel in March 1987 at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia. However, he did not perform this one there.
I fell on this song in the 1987 America’s Cup defense and for 35 years I have loved it! Every time I hear it, I’m brought back to the time my elder child was born! It’s so positive!!
Great song, heard it when I was a kid on this Basketball Video I had on VHS, and this song played commemorating all the old school NBA Players, George Milan, Bob Cousy etc. I've loved it ever since.
First time I heard this song it was after the U.S. team defeated Australia in the America's Cup in 1986. They had a video collage of the highlights of the America's Cup to this song. It was beautifully made by ESPN. Showed Dennis Conner crying in the 1983 defeat. Wish I had that video. Had it recorded, but was taped over.
This Is the Time Billy Joel We walked on the beach beside that old hotel They're tearing it down now But it's just as well I haven't shown you everything a man can do So stay with me baby I've got plans for you This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won't Although we'll want to This is the time But time is gonna change You've given me the best of you And now I need the rest of you Did you know that before you came into my life It was some kind of miracle that I survived Some day we will both look back And have to laugh We lived through a lifetime And the aftermath This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won't Although we want to This is the time But time is gonna change
Such happy memories of this...I worked for the Timberwolves and thinking back on this song playing in the arena, those memories will never fade and always make me smile.
I remember when Dennis Connor won the America's Cup in I think 1987, they played this song at the end when they rolled the credits and showed highlights of the race. It was perfect. It totally captured that moment in time.
A few months after this performance, they played this song at the end of the Penn State versus University of Miami national championship game. Penn State won. As Penn State fans we were thrilled. It’s my earliest memory with my dad. I was 6. He passed away last year. So this song holds a very special place in my heart.
I first heard this song after US defeated Australia in the 1987 America's Cup. They had a montage with the song for the final credits.. Dennis Conner crying when he lost the America's Cup in 1983 and showing Australia's secret keel that was finally revealed after Australia's victory.. The Challenge series victory in 1987. The final race series, and the eventual victory and recapture of the America's Cup. It was well done and it vibes with the song. It was fitting since the US had a 100 year winning streak and Conner was the first American to lose it. Then he won it back.
I just can not explain what I feel anytime I hear this song.. Billy's voice and way to sing is completely unique.. "This is the time" we don't know what to say!... I love it. I love Billy Joel tje way he is.. Inspired. He close his eyes while performing..that means he really mean each word. Maybe someone special comes to his mind.. ❤❤❤💜💜💜💚💚💚💛💛💛✨✨✨✨✨✨
I read this song is about Billy & a very young Elle McPhereson! Geez! Anyway, for me this is Billy Joel in his prime. He's like a prize fighter belting out his emotions here. You can just see it. He's a real survivor and it's great that he is still around and touring.
This song was the soundtrack of Sentieri (Guiding Light if I recall...) in Italy. I remember growing up when this show came up on TV. Beside the good, tender memories I love this song, it is truly a beautiful one.
This song gives me goosebumps because they played this at the end of the NCAA National championship for football when Penn State beat Miami 14-10 in 86/87.

This song has memories as a school kid of me watching the crushing World Series game 6 loss of Red Sox vs Mets (up 2 runs and 2 outs) as the ball rolled thru Buckner’s legs. It was then I accepted there would only be misery in life to see as had personally experienced it as a kid. But as Billy sang “time is gonna change” and it did. Yes, sports is a microcasm of life and 86 was an interesting year in Boston sports … Patriots lose SB, Celtics win NBA title and then lose Len Bias, Red Sox unreal run and win vs Angels and loss vs Mets. Time will always change…
It's not in the description, but this was filmed at the now-demolished Spectrum in Philadelphia. The full concert exists on the trading circuit, and the setlist is posted on a few different sites.

how the fuck is this underrated?
Literally it's on no best of lists I'm so sad. Like it's incredible. Hmm
The 2nd most underrated Billy Joel song of all time behind All for Leyna.

This Is the Time
Billy Joel
We walked on the beach beside that old hotel
They're tearing it down now
But it's just as well
I haven't shown you everything a man can do
So stay with me baby
I've got plans for you
This is the time to remember
Cause it will not last forever
These are the days
To hold on to
Cause we won't
Although we'll want to
This is the time
But time is gonna change
You've given me the best of you
And now I need the rest of you
Did you know that before you came into my life
It was some kind of miracle that I survived
Some day we will both look back
And have to laugh
We lived through a lifetime
And the aftermath
This is the time to remember
Cause it will not last forever
These are the days
To hold on to
Cause we won't
Although we want to
This is the time
But time is gonna change
Such happy memories of this...I worked for the Timberwolves and thinking back on this song playing in the arena, those memories will never fade and always make me smile.
