The Zenith Chronomaster Sport Review: Don't judge a book by its cover...
Zenith recently released the latest evolution of their chronograph line, and it's fair to say it caused quite the stir. People had opinions mainly about its appearance, as it was quickly compared to a certain popular chronograph leading to debate across the internet.
Were these comparison comments correct? Is this watch nothing more than its visual similarity to competitors? Or, is there more than meets the eye?
History of the El Primero with evolution over time
Often overlooked and disregarded, Zenith is hugely underrated when you consider just how much they have contributed to the industry. The El Primero is quite simply regarded as one of the most important movements in horology history.
Initially released in 1969 with the A386, it is known to be one of the first automatic chronograph movements on the market, and taking a look at the stats of it when it was introduced it was clearly the best one. Its use in the Daytona helped get Rolex out of a tricky situation back in the 1980s as they were keen to modernise the model with an automatic movement.
Charles Vermot famously ignored head office advice in the 70s to destroy all El Primero movements and tools, instead deciding to store everything in an attic. As such he saved the movement, in turn playing a hugely important part in the continued success of Zenith and in turn, the Rolex Daytona.
In the 80s and 90s, Zenith went on to become big-time movement makers thanks Mr Vermot and although they were pleased that a watch with their movement was becoming so popular, Zenith wanted a little more of the limelight that Rolex was receiving. And so in 1988 the Zenith DeLuca was born, introducing a design that shares a lot of its DNA with this new Chronomaster Sport.
Why It's Not The Rolex Daytona
Let’s just address the elephant in the room right away. A few people (in fact, a lot of people) were talking about how this new Chronomaster Sport from Zenith shares a resemblance to the model it is quite familiar with, the Rolex Daytona.
With its white dial, black ceramic bezel, metal bracelet and similar hands and indices, on the surface, this may look like fair assumption to make. After all, Rolex created this aesthetic and owns it completely, right? Well not quite.
See, a lot of these ‘Daytona’ comments occur because of the watch' appearance. Sure how a watch looks is a huge part of its value (after all we look at these things quite a lot during the day) but there is more to it than that. Rolex isn’t the only brand to release a white dialled chronograph with a black bezel (shock, I know). There are of course many others, but what Rolex are is in demand. They have popularised the modern luxury steel chronograph as we know it in such a way that results in anything even remotely similar-looking being disregarded as just another lookalike.
Purchasing a Daytona for £10,500 with your name on the paperwork isn’t exactly easy. Your best bet of owning one is to fork out at least double that and pick one up on the grey market. When something is desirable and in demand, that then becomes number 1. There is a noticeable amount of details on the Zenith that are different to the Daytona, but it seems people are caught up on the visuals.
The Chronomaster Sport we have with us today brings all of the brand's best bits from the past into one thoroughly modern model. Dimensions on the Chronomaster Sport are spot on with a case diameter of 41mm, a case thickness of 13.6mm and a lug to lug distance of just 46.8mm. The majority of this watch’ aesthetic can be attributed to the De Luca and the brands desire to modernise such design. To fully understand this new watch we must then take a look back at the DeLuca and see what features defined the model:
A stainless steel case
A matching steel bracelet with polished centre links
Chronograph function
Pump pushers
A black aluminium bezel
Date window at 4:30
You’ll notice that the new Chronomaster Sport from Zenith has exactly the same features as the DeLuca, simply updated to ensure the watch is in line with modern expectations.
Great review, thank you.
Thanks for the support!
instablaster...
I agree
This watch is above and beyond anything the Rolex Daytona is. I say this as a Daytona owner. I can not wait to pick this watch up.
This is soooo much cooler than a Daytona
Agreed, beautifull watch!
I think so! Plus you can actually buy one 😉 (and at the RRP too!) - James
Agreed...
Undoubtedly
100%
As the owner of a white ceramic Daytona, I still find this watch to be highly desirable. I will most likely snag one in the not too distant future. It's an absolutely outstanding piece!
Zenith, JLC, Blancpain are very underappreciated brands. People are so blinded by Rolex.
Rolex definitely dominates. Rightly or wrongly the brand is so strong that it's the brand that easily gets the most attention. - James
Include A. Lange there too blinded by the big 3
I've owned a Chronomaster Sport, black dial, for about a month and a half and I really love this watch. The bracelet sits in the box it was shipped from and I tend to swap out to various straps for daily wear, depending on what I'm doing that day. I swear, this watch started me on the road to a strap collection, straps from Delugs, Artem and some outfit called Watch Gecko! It sits next to an A386 as my favorite pieces. Everything about this watch just brings me joy. It seems almost daily, I discover some nuance I never noticed before that makes it even better.
I just added this watch to my collection and I completely love it. Absolutely beautiful!
This watch is insane in the flesh . I have a black Daytona I think I’m gonna get this model to diversify my collection
It is a remarkable watch, and remarkable achievement by Zenith. Both aesthetically and mechanically. I have a couple of friends who are currently on waitlist for the Daytona. Admittedly, they have nothing but good things to say about the Chronomaster Sport. Nevertheless, they steadfastly refuse to get it, and remain on the list for the Daytona. And, I suspect, will remain on the list for sometime. At 72 years of age, I sincerely hope I am still alive when they get it! :) There is only a single feature which prevents me from getting the Zenith (and, no, I am not getting the Daytona): the fact there is no protective steel ring around the ceramic bezel. I have never, ever been a fan of using ceramic on a watch, especially a sport watch. But I am also a klutz! And I am certain that I would strike the watch against a hard or sharp object, and that would be it for the bezel. Rant over. Otherwise, I love the Chronomaster Sport!
Get the gold version ?
One thing you forgot to mention (which is surprising considering you’re watchkecko) is what an absolute strap monster this watch is. It looks SO good on SO many different straps. Particularly anything blue!
Great impartial review. I love this watch. Definitely this or the new Speedy will be my next purchase. Even if the Daytona was avaliable at list and didn't carry any premium over the Zenith used, I would still buy this. It's a nicer looking watch and the history of Zenith crono is great. Also it's not a Roex which makes it even cooler in my mind.
Three years later, I snagged a pre-owned one for under half retail from Hodinkee's Atlanta site.
There's a glut of pre-owned now that the Daytona is in easier supply. Yay for me!
I had a chance to wear the white dial on wrist and it looks even better in person than on video. The size and details of it are perfect. I also tried on a Daytona, and my initial impression was it looks small.
Great review. Everyone that has waited to actually try this watch has raved about it. I like it better than the Daytona personally. I think it's a Home Run.
Thanks very much! All of us at the office absolutely loved it! 😅 - James
But let’s talk…about Rolex
I was already a big fan of the A386 and this new watch is a wonderful successor. Personally, I wish the blue subdial was a brighter shade of blue like on the old watch, but that’s a minor thing. I want one...badly!
Excellent review of an impressive watch.
Thanks very much! We're glad you liked the video - James
Simply mesmerising design and the technical aspects are outstanding. I'll never be able to own one but it's s work of art. Great review! Balanced and informative.
Thanks! - Tim
Never say never.
Great review of a great watch! I’ve ordered one now 👍🏽
Thanks Shafkat! amazing news make sure to let us know what your thoughts are once you've tried it on!
Honestly, I would rather get this Zenith even if I could get Daytona for the same price. Looks much better, in my opinion. Also, I hate chronographs without date.
Thanks for checking out our review!
Exactly what I thought. I find date is pretty useful for my daily needs.
Great review, thank you. Interesting movement and dial, non screw down pushers, 10 second center hand timer,date... Add to that Zeniths perhaps smug copying of the Daytona's clasp and looks, like saying, "We gave you 55 years, this is how it's done!" Just love this watch.
Everyone is all over the current Tudor Black Bay Chronograph. But for me, this is still the one to get when it comes to chronographs that compete with the Daytona in terms of overall look and feel.
the back of this Zenith is stunning, way above Rolex level !!!
The biggest turnoff with this watch is the horrors of servicing watch associated with LVMH ASP.
Zenith spent so much time into the R&D for this watch, and I don't want a highly propitiatory watch to not be fixable because LVMH is the only people who can get access to the parts.
Well the interactions I have had with LVMH from a servicing perspective has been exemplary, at least in the UK
@@reservecommander4856 I'm still very much into this watch, so I probably just have to give it a go. I'm in Australia so worst case scenario is I ship it to UK and get it serviced.
That’s why you send it to their authorized service/repair center. I don’t like just anybody working on my watches anyway.
@@reservecommander4856 likewise, too service
The white dial Chronomaster would definitely be my 2nd choice if I already didn't own the white 116500. This watch is stunning but I dont want to have both.
This is the first time I've ever heard of you...so the Zenith is a good topic to discuss, so I clicked on your video...and I have to say, good job. The presentation was spot on... awesome job....Thank you
Lucky to stumble upon this beauty here in Vienna that I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity of owning it. What an amazingly handsome timepiece.
Excellent review. So excited to receive this watch!
Thanks!
thanks for the video - great move from Zenith with this Chronomaster Sport and the Defy
Thanks for checking out our video Christian!
Great review that goes a long way to addressing the ignorance around this watch. I think it's a great looker with an interesting, exceptional movement. On looks and movement alone, this would be my pick in the modern luxury chrono sector. I probably like the Omega Racing the best, but they're just too damn big!
agreed ! great looking but ridiculous size
Whether you like it or not: Rolex has been passed on research, development and technology by it’s 2 main competitors Omega and Zenith.
Agreed. They are still holding on to their 4130 for 20 years. Laughable yet people still buy into it.
Omega do good movements but too much arrogance and brand issues - I'm really getting behind brands like GS and Zenith
Grand Seiko is a generation ahead of all three.
Rolex lineup is extremely dull and boring. They changed almost nothing in the last 20 years. No new colors, just change the shape of sub a bit and make all colorful dials black, no change to the bezels and voila, NeW GeNeRaTiOn SubMArInEr!!1!1!!!
Plus you cannot simply buy them watches you have to wait in a line, plus extremely stupid douchebag people are attracted to the brand. I also don’t like the fact rolex has no transparent casebacks, I really love beautiful movements and being able to see them whenever I want. Not gonna give my money to rolex. The are brands that are actually worth prices they are asking us to pay them. And the bang is usually by far bigger then rolex’s one.
But OMG iS iT A rOLeX?!?!1!1!1 Haha🤣😂
Just bought one after seeing this review, this watch is amazing
This is my favourite brand💯💯💯
Which is your favourite Zenith watch?
Defy 21 with titanium bracelet and blue dial
The You Tubers calling it a Daytona Homage know precisely what they’re doing.
They’re desperately trying to pander to the fragile egos of the Rolex fan boys.
The Rolex nerds that paid double the price for a watch so they can have something desirable by others because it makes them feel better about themselves.
I, for one, refuse to talk about nothing but Rolex. For some people it’s nothing but Rolex, Rolex, Rolex. Nope, I’m not going to talk about Rolex. Rolex is simply something off limits here. We’re in a ‘no Rolex’ zone here. That said, the entire worth of this watch is based on how it compares to Rolex. Let’s be clear, it’s all about Rolex.
I just got the Omega chronograph...it's a big piece but I like it a lot now I'm gonna get this one
Cool. Good info. I don't have much use for a chronograph but if I did, and had the money lying around, I'd likely go for this one.
Thanks! I'm with you. If I had the cash and wanted a chronograph then this would be at the top of my list! - James
I like it very much and would consider getting one but prefer the fabric straps they were offered on but now seem to have dropped. I like the comparison to the Rolex Daytona but of course there's one massive complication; the Rolex is unobtainable at retail price for 99% of us mortals.
I’ve always wanted a Zenith and never been interested in a Daytona (even though I like it). How many Daytonas run at 36,000 vph? How many Daytonas have 1/10 th second timing?
I’m not saying those things make it better. They are just points of difference that appeal to me.
I can’t wait to add a zenith to my collection
We all feel them same i'm sure :D
I wasn’t wrong, loved this edition and can see it’s heritage from previous models….BUUUUUUUT the clasp is a little rip from the Crown but I still love it!
I really like this watch but it can’t replace the Daytona for me. It could only compliment it in a collection. If it were the same thickness as the Daytona though? Then I would have a tougher choice.
A rarely mentioned fact is the fact that one can actually read the time on the Zenith.
For many Zeniths, that's not the case.
Love this watch. Next on the list for me.
I own this beautiful time piece
in person watch looks amazing
between the looks & movement it offers winning combination !
Beautiful watch.. Thanks
Agreed! It was a dream to work with :D
@@watchgecko yes you're very lucky. I think it might be the next big thing in watches.
The only issue is the locking clasp, it break nails as faster than a speeding built. My one cracked my thumb nail a few time 😮💨
I wish they'd drop the date and have a slimmer profile but I do think this can take sale away from both the Daytona and the Speedmaster
having a date is one of main reasons why I want this over a Daytona.
This won’t dent Daytona sales because some folk are lured by the brand, not the watch. Similarly, with the Speedmaster being an historical horological timepiece it will keep its place. That said, for watch functionality, it probably beats both..
@@MichaelSmith-fn1ci I think Daytona and Speedy also have better dimensions but I agree it won't ever satisfy the urge if you really want a Daytona or replace a moonwatch
I will go for the Zenith All the way
Yes!
A Zenith, beautiful watch and a movement. The dial is profoundly nicer than the Rolex Daytona.
PERFECT REVIEW, WELL DONE AND SPOT ON
If you take the Zenith from the 60's and slap a Ceramic bezel on it you pretty much have the same look as the Chronomaster Sport. Tired of Rolex snobs saying Zenith is a wannabe Daytona. This CMS is stunning in person.
I have this in my hand one time... It is just incredible ❤❤❤
interesting and informative review, actually provides a great insight into Zenith, this video reall shows up the Bark & Jack one for what it is .... a poorly researched, lazy & totally pointless effort. This watch is now at the top of my want list, when there are some nice used one out there.
We are glad to hear you enjoyed our review! What do you think of this watch overall?
I really like everything about it, the exhibition case back, the sub dial colours , the 10sec revolution , the date, the bezel obviously. So it’s not a Rolex Daytona, there are other great brands out there, JLC, Omega. Zenith is right up there for the price bracket.
The white numerals on the light grey running seconds subdial at the 9:00 position isn’t particularly legible. A rare misstep in an otherwise excellent and well executed design
I’d have this over the Daytona, there’s no contest.
I feel the same! - Dames
Lol he can have it. I’ll purchase any Daytona (including platinum) all day/any day over a Zenith.
Why I was wrong? No. I’ve always loved this watch
Watch straps for this watch????
This is definitely something we will look into in the future! Thank you for your support
How does it wear? I know its only 1mm bigger than the Daytona but it seems to wear noticeably larger in wrist photos than the Daytona does. Id like one but i prefer smaller pieces
Simply the BEST CHRONO ON THE MARKET .
Is this a flyback? And why not have the 12 hour sub dial? Also I think 1/10th of a second would make each rotation 6 seconds, not 10.
Fantastic review of a truly beautiful masterpiece of a watch. It is far more stylish and attractive than the Daytona, in my opinion.
It's nice, but the daytona is a smaller watch, is thinner, and hence wears way better under fitted business shirts/cuffs
Elprimero beat 'em all , except Grand Seiko SBGC223 , which i don't understand how on earth u didn't mention!!
This one was on the list but we decided to include the Bell and Ross + Mont Blanc instead 👍
@@watchgecko what u wrote earlier was better , this is just an excuse worse than a crime !!!
@@Aladdin139 no excuse, just a genuine insight into what happened during the process in creating the content 😀 the Black found on the case and the centre links of the GS were different enough for me to change the selection out to fit the point we were making 👍
Hands down best chrono on the market
This watch is quite popular with the Williams Formula 1 team. They have no Watch sponsorship. So this is the watch they choose to wear.
I still don’t understand the difference between the 9 o’clock sundial vs the 3 o’clock sundial. Can someone explain?
Does Zenith perform the service exclusively? Or can a good watchmaker?
Zenith...follow the Star!
I Love Zenith watches. I have an el primero HW.
I liked in on photos and in the videos. But in person I was disappointed. Too thick and the bracelet is just not refined enough. Feels cheap.
The dial nonetheless is a real success
Thanks for the support, It's always great to hear the varied experiences with people who have seen the watch in person. Thanks for your comment.
Would you like to sell ???
On a waiting list for this watch.
A truly excellent chronograph.
Looks to be a great watch, and i would have no problem wearing.
It really is a great piece!
Great watch and no waiting list
Great Review But I think the Tudor Chrono, will give this Zenith a Run for its Money ?
If you want bang for buck, the Tudor Chrono carries the day. But if you want that special something, then Zenith wins hands down. Just depends on your goals really, also I think the Tudor bubble will burst….
Very much like this. I have a 90s chronomaster and while I love it, the new one looks bolder & better finished.
Oh a 90s chronomaster sounds awesome!
I think I need on of these.
The De Luca looks like the Autavia
I've loved this watch from the moment it came out and love the look of it way more than the Daytona. Having said that, I will only spend 10K or more on a watch once. As a retirement gift in 5 years. That will be an A. Lange & Sohne. Great video.
Nice, but a chronograph that can only time up to 60 minutes isn't a great deal of use.
I’m curious about this myself .
I'm fine with most of the watch, and in fact do appreciate it. But the clasp is just the thing to much! That's no something a renound brand should da
Great vlog great watch enjoy
I don’t want to talk about nothing but Rolex, in a Zenith review, but this is so comparable to the Rolex. Rolex is such a cool watch and for me, Rolex is Rolex. This watch so reminds me of Rolex that I would say this is not just comparable to Rolex but it’s almost exactly like a Rolex. So let’s be clear: it’s all about Rolex.
Yes. Rolex.
Just🔥🔥🔥
We can tell you that it looks incredible in the metal too! The finishing is superb 👌 - James
@@watchgecko this is the most beautiful watch! So much details and beautifully shapes. And then the back.... a wonderful watchmaking pice!
Beautiful watch 😍
Excellent content, subscribed, Regards, Giorgia Mondani.
Looking to purchase the white dial but want to check out both before purchase, sadly can't find any at the moment. 😢
We're you able to pick one up?
@@NeoWahNah yes got a call to view a white dial that was a customers in November. Soon as I tried it on (very carefully) I knew the white was right and the black dial wasn’t for me. Said the had a one coming from Switzerland the following week and I could purchase. Absolutely love it 🥰
@@Macm73 Lucky! Lucky! I too passed on a black dial in October 2021 and miraculously was offered the white dial in December. It was absolutely the best decision! Awesome watch that keeps giving! Glad you managed to get yours! Wear it in good health!
If you're looking for different strap option, check out Artem straps. Im currently wearing mine on a black strap with white stitching and an RM style deployant. I have a navy/white on the way. I have a 7.25" wrist so ordered the standard size.
@@NeoWahNah certainly was lucky. Had been trying to view one but with no luck since they were first launched. Two year search for a birthday purchase. I pretty much knew the zenith was right for me once it was launched and was never put off by its initial negative reviews but had to try before buy. Ordered watch 4 days before said birthday and picked up week later as the Ad was outside my region. Funny how things work out!
Nice piece.
I love this watch I mean peoppe think it copies daytona but technically look at the history the style zenith has already done this years and years ago I would get this in a heart beat 10grand or daytona 28 min
Bravo!
I wish I had one
I absolutely love everything about that watch.. except where they placed the date!! Fck
Get a Rolex Datejust 36mm for a classic dress watch, get a Zenith Chronomaster Sport for a sport watch and live a happy life... No need more! 💙🤍 (blue dial for Rolex Datejust, white dial for Zenith)
Best advice for people out there 💯😎 I have exactly that collection with exact those color dials and I also have a Seamaster PO with a black dial. So happy with my 3 watch collection 🤩🙏🔝
I'd take one over a Daytona, in rose gold, and pocket the savings (...or spend on something else)
gosh, this is so much better than the Daytona
I like.. but I see it a bit expensive
Love this watch on the strap and deploying clasp. That’s the way I’d get it to set it apart from being too much of a Daytona copy
Lug to lug IS NOT 20mm. Lug width is.
Looks fresh
No watch is the best watch. I like not having anything encumber my wrist. I don’t have to worry about a watch accidentally scraping across my car when I’m loading things in and out of my car. I also don’t have to worry about being mugged for my watch. I can tell time by looking at my phone or ask Siri/Alexa. Rather than spending $10K on something that you don’t really need, invest in high-growth stock or cryptos and retire early or work less.
The thing is the bracelet is not very good.
De Lucas should be more prized than they are.
