This really is one of the best hobby channels on YT. Can't quite put my finger on why - maybe the tight editing and short length, appropriate amount of dry wit, tips that are genuinely not talked about in other channels, excellent graphics and production quality (especially for a one-man show) and a lack of b-roll and royalty-free music segments. You don't waste our time regardless of how long the video actually is and that's a real skill! Not that those things are always bad, but the brevity and conciseness of your videos is my favorite thing about your channel and is very refreshing.

In terms of production quality this is easily one of the best channels out there with less than 10K subs, hell the production quality is as good if not better than a lot of the channels with 50K plus. Glad you’ve got a Patreon going now will definitely be sending a few quid your way mate 👍

Your channel came at the perfect time when I and a group of friends were looking to get into Necromunda. So you terrain videos were so on point. Then 10th edition landed. The big shiny thing that's stolen everyone's attention. But stick with it, your content is great and look forward to seeing you build or paint something.

As a Yank who watched a lot of British TV via the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) out of Chicago during the 1980s, I absolutely got the "Two Ronnies" reference. :)

@@thestateofplay2023 Oh yeah, starting at 11 PM on Sunday nights, they'd air Monty Python, then Dave Allen, then Doctor Who (in a movie-length "omnibus" format), and then The Two Ronnies (in an edited half-hour format). In later years they'd add Blackadder and Whose Line to the mix. Of course, I had to videotape the shows because I had to be at school Monday morning. 😆

Really looking forward to the painting efficiencies videos for miniatures. I never get as much time for painting as I would like (agree weekends are usually spent doing other things) but hundreds of on sprue miniatures aren't going to sort out themselves so doing more with less is always a goal of mine.

One thing I’d love to see, based on your comment at the end of this video about wanting to move slapchop forward is: a guide to undercoat slapchop colors that aren’t just black.
Should shadows always be dark blue? Should the be reduced value of the main color? Should we mix a smidge of the contrasting color (color theory not paint type) into the main to make the undercoat?
Im not artistically trained, so a guide like you did with inks would be incredible.

I landed on your channel via RUclips recommendation for ink mixing video... And watched all the tips videos and there were glorious and several I started using. Even though I build and paint a ton of terrain, I skipped all of the ones with Necromunda in the title cause I don't play, thinking they were specific to that game.
Yeah I put Necromunda in the titles for those specific fans of the game but many of the tips in those are just about rethinking how you want terrain to work.
I’m new here (on the channel I mean), but don’t see anything wrong with posting different types of content… Painting, terrains, hints and so on - it’s all about the same but with different souse

I've only stumbled upon your channel in the last few weeks. In fact, I was looking for some modular necromunda ideas, and saw your video on making modular sumps and toxic pools. When you said 'you can use your inkjet printer to do it', I admit I scoffed at the idea, thinking it would look about as good as it sounds.
But, I trudged on and was a bit blown away. So, I humbly apologize and have subscribed. Your channels is a gem.

I think your channel is absolutely great. Its the only one where I watch the whole videos from start to finish without skipping past overlong intros and other repetitive bits. I love the dry humour and varied content. Especially pleased to hear you dont intend to jump on the bandwagon of rushing out content for all the latest GW big releases. Thanks to Leviathan boxset YT was flooded with painting vids for tyranids a few weeks back and its refreshing to hear of a channel that wants to provide a wider appeal and more original ideas. Please keep up the good work.
Yeah I didn’t buy leviathan. I picked up the starter box instead. I wanted the terminators and a few tyranids so I could use them in Space Hulk! Like anyone needs more Space Marines! 🤣

Love the content and the humour and that you do fresh content. Interesting that Tabletop Alchemy has same issue, making diverse interesting content splits the audience and then YT algorithm punishes you.
Yeah it’s a weird one because it’s actually the same audience. People who make things also paint those things or play games in this space. The mini gaming space covers a broad range of topics. YT doesn’t or can’t figure out it’s often the same people and therefore pushes content to different target groups. 🤔

@@thestateofplay2023 now that I have kids and I have limited hobby time scratch building stuff has gone out of the window. MDF terrain tarted up with some stuff out of the bitz box, balsa etc is the way forward. That's where your zone mortalis tips have been a life saver. I can actually play a game now, not in 2 years once I've built everything.

That’s how I actually started. With the first Space Hulk board game in the 80s. It was Games Workshop who made it but still a board game. You may even see that original box in the shelf behind me!

Cool! What do you paint Trevor? Scale models? Many tips transfer across but often I find the Warhammer community take years to use scale model tips. Oil washes took years to go mainstream which is weird because they’re great. I guess it’s a patience thing - acrylic painters seem to hate long drying times. 🫣

Ah yes, I recently became aware on here that Canada was a haven for old British TV shows. I had no idea. But, is that on the British Columbia side? I can’t really see them being big on the French side.

Love the presentation style 👍 I'm not really a mini painter other than as a palate cleanser and break from painting lots of gray spaceship models but your content is enjoyable to watch and I have picked up a few tips that can help in multiple scenarios. Yeah it was weird. Subscribers were contacting me saying it didn’t show up. I knew something was up because after a day it had only 300 impressions. Seems like it was recommending randomly. But hey, you’re here so it wasn’t all bad! Welcome!!
Not only older British folks, but older Yanks who watched a lot of Public Broadcasting (PBS) way back when. 🙂 YT can be a tough room (tougher still when a creator makes dire content or stops for long periods, don't ask me how I know either of those). I think pigeonholing leads to faster burnout but that's just my guess, honestly. Having a bit of hobby ADD - and many of us in the hobby do - I enjoy your mix of topics. Some painting vids of figures would be most welcome IMO. Cheers!

It’s very tempting but I’d probably obsess over it and never get a video finished! 🤣
So far all the videos have been great and don't divide my attention, given the topic. I think if you approach this as you are teaching and sharing something, then postv what YOU like. I understand there's a monetary need as well, but if you fill the content with things you think people want (or even if they ask), you'll likely get burned out by fulfilling what others ask and not what drives you to create content. The balance between terrain and painting is cool, along with things you discover, like the inks and hobby tools. If there's a way to do a survey you can gather input on, then it might help to create filler every month or so. Stay the course you're on. It's refreshing to see a new creator making great content across a wide range of hobby topics.
Totally. The worry I have with surveys is the old historical anecdote. Ask people what they want and they’ll say faster horses. They’d never say automobile.
Right now, I’m going to make stuff that has helped me out over the years which will hopefully help others.

It would be different content, and maybe not popular, but I would love tutorials terrain based photoshop (or even better open source free programs like gimp). You had previously mentioned you did photoshop or illustrator professionally and I'd love to learn how to make my own paper designs or modify designs I find elsewhere. Crooked Staff does some great sci-fi stuff (few abd far between) but I don't even know how to change the colors or his stuff to suit my needs.
I thought about that tbh. But on my sump video, the photoshop part had a huge drop-off in viewers. Like massive.
I usually make computer game artwork and movie posters (marketing) for a living and it work probably work as a separate channel. Just gotta find the time.
A fair number of Canadians will also get the 2 Ronnies joke . . . (just saying that thanks to the national broadcaster, we have a varied and completly randomized knowledge of British tv)

I noticed your Patreon about two weeks ago, I held it up to the test and didn't enrol.
The test is to line up value against alternative patreon because I can't get them all and hobby content has to run against STL subscription FOMO which is for me a mental illness
Right now I content patreon support Alex at 52minis, which is my main hobby hangout and Marco who's educated me to better effect than everyone else, and made a genuine change to my thinking and results. 90% of the evolution from being a simple get them on the table army painter for about 38 years to painting the best I can (on some models) is down to Marco's painting genius and skill at teaching the thinking to the clumsy.
So tho I thoroughly appreciate the genuine quality of your content my support was limited to subscribe, like and comment. Basic algorithm stuff.
That was the wrong decision, I do that sometimes, the previous two vids have been standout quality, genuine top drawer and this one explains a clear vision for the future with total humility regarding financial support. My respect has doubled in size and grown a new head.
Come the first I'll be a patreon/patron, couldn't be more deserved unless you had a black woolly hat pulled way down and an umpah intro tune. I got in at the start with Marco and I'll be just as proud to be a small part of your work reaching it's real audience.

BUT you do have professional knowledge of pigment and colour, which is a resource we can all very happily lean on.
More than that in the last vid you showed yourself a very mindful hobbyist, you pay attention to process and much more than that you think about it in a very effective way and can then convey it clearly and with a delivery that's really easy to absorb. All this and thankfully with a style and inherent humour all your own

I laughed a bit when you compared yourself to squidmar. The reason people like me follow you is because your not like him. We need practical tips on how to paint our miniatures and dioramas, we don't have all day to spend on our hobbies, we have lives. And content creators like yourself help us achieve that goal.
