Happy to be back.
In the plethora of fish keeping YT channels out there, this is definitely my favorite. You guys are knowledgeable and have a down to Earth demeanor that always makes your videos a pleasure to watch. Plus you both seem care just as much about the happiness of the fish you keep as you do with the esthetics of the tank and it's visual appeal. I currently have 20 fish under my care, including tetras, danios and most of all betta's, and every one of them has their own name, personality, likes (Prexus the Danio likes to play in the sand, Helios the Betta will only rest on live plants) dislikes (Morpheus the Betta won't eat dried worms, Astraeus the Betta only likes New Life Spectrum pellets) and mean as much to me as all of my air breathing pets do. So many fish keepers on YT talk about 'oh I ordered a bag of 40 fish and 20 died en route, oh well' as if those 20 little individual souls didn't even matter, and it makes me sick. You guys though really do seem to care about the fish you keep, and that is conveyed in every video of yours that I watch.
Thank you! Oscar deserve 250 gallons and be in a big group! One guy came in, he kept his oscars in a 300 gallon. 9 of them. Sumpfilter, 50 waterchange every 3-4 days. They were so hug and beautiful. The biggest one was 20 inches, I swear!
My favorite fish at the moment are Rainbow fish - expensive but beautiful, long lived and the shiny metallic bodies in various colors that color change according to mood and their peaceful demeanor make them really cool!

It DID look spectacular, till the rams succumbed to being gbrs lol. I was pretty upset. Oh well, it is pretty enough still full of cardinals and corys 😄 (paleatus, false julii, pygmys are being added from quarantine today, and I'm thinking long and hard about my lone scarlet badis, whom I have given up on looking for a wife, and seems sad in a 'species' tank quite alone).

I was pleasantly surprised to see how much more available “nano” fish are now readily available. Many of them were always “around” (ember tetras, some of the tiny rasboras, least killis, endlers etc) but they were often only in specialty stores and/or were very expensive for what they were. My point is: I’m glad to see that there’s a much larger variety of fish that can be kept in the 5.5 and 10 gallon tanks in a decent sized school. Neon tetras are great and a staple/classic, but getting to find even smaller fish that can be in a school with more individuals in a 10er just makes the aquarium feel more like it’s a snapshot of the wild. Plus, the tiny tiny fish like exclamation point rasboras and similar could easily be kept with adult cherry shrimp without worry.
I started with the black and yellow mollie it’s actually currently my oldest fish and it’s pushing 2.5-3inches, she’s now in a 75gallon with some Odessa, Denison and cherry barbs.
So, can you put a Betta in a 15 with a school of CPDs? (And one snail.) The 15 in question is reportedly only 12.5 unless you do something kinda cringey to remove the rear filter compartment.
I used to keep a nano tank with pigmy rasboras in and it was probably the smallest tank I had. They were absolutely lovely to keep (as I typically kept bettas while my other half loved getting lots of different and rare fish). If you can get them they're absolutely worth it. I don't recommend them in community tanks because of how small they are as they'll easily become food for other fish.
Those breeder tanks are my favorite. I drove 3 hours away two years ago just to get a 36 x 18 50 gallon breeder, and I went out there again to get a 36 x 18 30 gallon. I feel like the 55s are way too narrow. Love that extra depth. 🙂
I just started a heavily planted / driftwood hardscape (40 liters is 10 American gallon right?) With 10 ember tetra's and 6 amano shrimp because of one of your videos. It's such a joy to watch. The embers seemed pretty shy the first two days, but now they're schooling around and the shrimp are busy cleaning everything all the time. Thanks for all the great videos!
Absolutely love that y’all made bunch of videos! So happy, just an endless night of RUclips videos until falling asleep and getting ideas :) keep up the great work ❤
Lisa your discus tank is gorgous. i have planted terra cotta potswith anubias that look great and mine lay eggs on them. i have 7 with an albino longfin pleco, lots of snails ( i love snails and they do wonders for my tank! Trumpet and mystery) and some columbian tetras to school around. Love seeing other setups. Peace happy easter
Oscars! Yesss! I have kept them previously, wonderful guys. I had a bad disease in my big tank so unfortunately I have to star from scratch again. So, went to my local fish store and he had some beautiful baby Oscars. I bought 3 albino type and 3 tigers. They are growing good now and I love em to bits.
In my research, any tank or cage-based pet does better/best in the bigger sizes. Even if a 20gallon tank is suitable for a mouse or a pair, go bigger if you can manage to do so. Even if a betta can manage in a five gallon, if you can offer them a ten or twenty gallon, do so. They'll be much happier. If ya have a pet rabbit or guinea pigs, get them a nicely sized c and c cage rather then the awful tiny ones available at the chain pet stores. Use those awful tiny ones only as a bathroom or travel cage. That's about all they're good for. Conventional pet store hammy cages: toss them out! Use a large size terrarium, tank or custom make a hammy cage. (Or use small hammy cage as carrier to vet if needed or travel cage if needed but don't make them live in it 24/7!) Yeah, animals that spend their whole lives in a tank, cage, terrarium, etc should always have the biggest option you can provide for them. Sure, bare minimum is do-able but it's not the best. Would you want to live in a closet or bathroom your whole life? Or jail cell? I doubt it and that's often what these tiny options are for many animals. Researching the proper sized enclousure is always best too before getting any animal. Like with Axolotl's, I might have to out of necessity, go for a bare minimum 20 gal long initially, but I aim to eventually upgrade to a 55 gal. and then bigger again if I have the space and means to do it... that 20gal long might then be A) a grow-out tank for juvinile axolotl or B) maybe I'd convert it into a feeder fish tank and raise a community fish tank of fishes axolotl's can feed on. C) isolation or quarrantine tank for sick axies or fishes to heal or be evaluated before they go into a different tank. The possibilities are many. Then that 55gal, if I upgrade, could either house additional axolotl's (girls tank/boys tank) or I could put it to fish of one kind or another or community tank. I would just keep aiming to provide better for whatever aquatics I have, and when one gets an upgrade, the old tank will be cleaned and re-cycled and re-purposed to whatever I wanted to have in it next. Maybe have a few gecko's or lizards or something in one of them eventually. Dunno. I'm just really into the reptiles, amphibians and fish lately since my allergies to dogs and cats are an annoyance I live with.
I understand why John likes Congo tetras, but I think they pail in comparison to emperor tetras. Angel lovers go look at PLATINUM Angel's. At first they look white, but look closer & they shine. Tank of assorted Angel's is AWESOME.😜😜😜
This one of the best fish videos I ever seen. The way you guys talk about the sice of tank and the fish who will trive in there is great. Would love more vids having same kind of topics: good examples of a nice setup . Thanks for another great vid..... :)
Never hear too much about fiemouths and what size tank and surroundings . Appreciate a comment. thank you . I just watch your show about size tanks and what fish you could put in tham . Only comment to make , is your wifes voice was so sweet I couldn"t hear name her selection of fish .
I'm planning a planted 200 gallon tank with a group of Angelfish as the centerpiece. Group of SAE are sure to go there. Possibly swordtails for the top (also swordtails need space to grow fully).
My dream fish is a decently sized school of glass catfish in as big a tank as i can get for em, fully planted and maybe with something else in there, whatever can safely live with them without detracting too much from them as the main event
Best looking tank I have had next to my motoro stingrays was a 66 gallon tank. 48x18x16 high. Had approximately 30-35 African cichlids(mix). All fish were 3-5”. 4 - eheim 2213 and a 150 gallon eheim wet dry filter. Crazy amount of water changes but it’s hard to compare the Africans to other freshwater fish. If you by inches per gallon I was double to triple that amount.
I am 5 months new into This beautiful and exciting hobby. My first impression of the Oscar fish was eh.. who wants this big ugly fish?! I began to notice the Oscar’s at my local fish shop are watching me when I walk by… I Recently stopped by the Oscar tanks to say hello, admire their colors and play chase my finger. sadly, I’ve learned I’ve got a lot of growing to do- learning and tank size before I consider ever keeping any Oscars… for now I’ll have to be content with visiting them at the fish shop. Rams are the other fish that made me go from EHHH 🤷🏻♀️ to woah😍 flower horns and those gross big eyes gelatinous gold fish still ugly though.. 🎉
hi, your videos are really helpful. hope you continue making similar videos. can i make a suggestion? can you make a video on how to identify different varieties of discus like leopards, turquoise, butterflies, melons etc., and other varieties also.
They were too spicy for my 29 gallon and agitated the whole tank, without being actually 'aggressive', they made everyone in mine nervous- beautiful though, if I ever have them again, I might give a school their own tank, possibly with albino corys, which are the only thing I can think won't be perturbed by their constant swooshing around
I personally don't think you should keep any fish in a 5 gal that's over 1 cm in length. Tiny shrimp are cool. Snails. Brine shrimp (if you're into that). And the daniels as mentioned earlier. I wouldn't keep neon tetras in a 5 gal even though they're small because they love to swim around, same with guppies.
@@kinglyzard exactly!! It's not rocket science. And some smaller fish produce more waste than some large fish, which is why if you're gonna have a nano tank you need to know which small aquatic life is sustainable in there and doesn't produce as much waste.
It depends if you want a Pet fish (personality based fish) or more of a nature schooling fish. Personality 1. Pea Puffer x1 ( have to feed them small snails for their teeth and de parasite them) 2. Betta 3. Kuhli Loach 4. Clown Killifish 5. Pigmy Corys Schooling nature fish 1. Neon Tetra 2. Zebra danio 3. Endlers 4. Platys (I prefer the blue ones) 5. (Tie) Dalmatian Mollys (Tie) Guppies
Our 20g has 3 oto cats, 10 ember tetras, a handful of snails that hitchhiked home with us on the plants we bought, and one gorgeous male indigo giant betta.
Never thought I'd see something that was new to me. Until I found shell dwellers. A bit higher pH a little warmer temperature and presto very small very active and extremely aggressive (; in the way of Bettas, not in the way of jewel cichlid's I'm in love with these guys! A sandy bottom 10 gallons and off you go.)
I have six of the rummy nose mixed in with the my Neons and my Cardinals they all get along great and heavily plan a tank love them full of color always moving around always seem to be like in the center of the water column so they're always you know insights where you can see them one of the fish I'm very glad that I purchased I really enjoy them so I agree with you 100%
I had a 150 gallon with 4 Angels, 5 Bluespotted Sunfish (North American native fish), a breeding colony of Cory Catfish, Snails, a breeding colony of Swordtail-Platy hybrids, and lone fantail goldfish for snail control. I had to do a bit of creative decoration and the Sunfish kept to their area, and the Angels to their area (mostly). Every other interaction was peaceful, except babies getting munched.
My literal mind caused me to do a mental double take when you talked about breeding angels with your friend Dave Warren. It was trying to picture an angel fish / Dave Warren hybrid, but couldn't figure out what a Dave Warren fish would look like. 😂😂😂
I have a 75 gallon with all juveniles, 13 zebra and spotted danios, a yellow lab mbuna, acei, a couple silver ones that look zebra'ee, maingano, melanochromis auratus, orange blotch, blood parrot, firemouth, pictus catfsh, bristlenose, 2 nerite snails and a hatchling eastern and hatchling western painted turtle. I think I might need a larger tank in the next year or 2. Turtles got me into it, cichlids got me in love with fish lol. Out of all of my cichlids the zebra ones are definitely the most aggressive
im recently new to fish keeping i went from 45L to 70L to 130l/140L tanks(one tropical and one cold-ish)both 3ft long. my favorite so far is platys. i only have 3 of them in each tank so far because previously got cherry barbs which i have 10 of.
The Congo tetra's bodies ARE beautiful with the right light! They're my favorite tetra. I have couple that grew to at least an inch- and I loved them. I just lost them to a bacterial outbreak- and I'm upset since they are so hard to find.
Would a single Betta and a couple snails do all right in a 5 gallon tank together? I'm trying to keep my first tank small and manageable, and I like the idea of a 5 gallon. I don't want my Betta to be forever alone though :(
I keep seeing that shot of the black and gold lyretail mollies in your videos and I love it! I've got them in my 20 long and they're my favorite breed/variation of molly.
Love the video, great advice cause I'm looking into getting into the hobby. Just one thing, please get shock mounts for your mics.. if you have good have good enough earphones you can hear every time one of you plops your hand on the table, sends a very low thud over the mic through the boom arm
I’ve got a 75 gallon setup. Two of the fish are silver dollars. I bought the tank in ‘98. The one silver dollar I bought when I setup the tank. She’s 25 years old now! The other one is 14. I’ve got a RUclips video out on her.
Got a 90 gallon with my favorite fish in it angelfish and Bichirs. The 90 is really just a stepping stone for larger tank later on. A 4 foot tank was an easier sell then a 6 foot tank to my wife.
I have a 36 that's been sitting empty a few years and I'm trying to figure out what to stock. I'm definitely setting it up as a natural aquascape this time.
i heard somewhere a while ago that some apartments don’t allow aquariums larger than 29 gallons because of the filled weight... which would explain the existence of the 29 gallon lol.
If you keep angels here is the best advice! You want them in a 40 gallon or up and you have to even put aggression. I had three black marbles with a koi in a 29 and he was being bullied really bad so I upped them to a 40 and added two more koi. No more aggression issues.
New to your channel HOWEVER I feel your channel is binge worthy because I have watched hours of you guys every night. Love you channel. I have ponds and aquariums and your channel is VERY informational. Thank you.
Thanks for that great info. My love is with Bettas, male and female, but my fish room is expanding and I love hearing about what you two like or suggest. I have started keeping a few Cichlids now because of you! I LOVE shell dwellers.
I'm getting a 55 gallon aquarium, and am looking for a few good species of community fish to add to it. I was thinking some angels, tetras, danios and a couple plecos. I plan on sticking to male or female angels. Does one or the other tend to have a better demeanor in living with other species?
5 is single betta,10 is guppy, 20 is molly, 29 is congo tetras, 40 is a loach, 55 is cichlids, 75 is angels, 125 and piranha, 150 is made for pleco. There's my list, selection is more specific.
The best aquarium experience of my life was coming home to my Angels eggs covering a plant leaf. 2 Angels on one side of the tank, and the other 10 fish on the other LOL. I was able to raise 2 generations.
I have had much better experience doing 6 female betta in a 30 gallon with guppies and endlers than I did with 5 females in a 20 long. I had lots of hiding places, territories and dither fish in both tanks. Both came from established sororities too I find 75s and 125s are great for African cichlids but I also find 125s and 150s are good for a mix of some American cichlids like Jack Dempsey, Oscar, Saum/Green Terror. A 150 is also a good size for a lone Jaguar cichlid with river rocks holding down a long piece of driftwood if you’re a minimalist. You could breed jaguars in a 150 too My favourite mbuna mix for a 75 is an even number of yellow labs and mix color zebras like blue and red zebras like 5 yellow labs, 2 reds, 3 blues
Rainbows - almost nothing prettier than a tank full of bosmoni & assorted others. Man oh man. 😍😍😍. Had a 75g tank w Sharks & Barbs, (so fun, reasonable, & pretty easy to find).
Separate into a new tank? Or upgrade them to the next larger size or two? Sell off some (if you can)? Or offer them as food for some other fish/animals (if suitable and safe for said animals). Some of the smaller tanks I'm planning on starting would be intended for any young (at least some) to become live food for my future axolotls. I'm still in the research and planning stage though so I don't have any set up tanks yet. I'm just thinking that for the axolotls, I'd rather raise their food myself especially as I collect more of the various morphs the axolotls come in and gear up for potentially breeding lotl's. More cost effective to have tanks and bins to raise worms, shrimps, and small fish suitable as feeders for the axolotls.

When they color up it's just wild, mine look like red fire
I plan on getting a 36 gallon tank and wished you could have included that one. I currently have a 20 gallon and a 5 gallon.
One of my local pet stores has a huge tank of angels and various danios! It’s a mesmerizing one!
I was in the middle of working on my tank and I saw the post notification. Never washed my hands so quickly in my life😂💙
13:08 Congo Tetras!
Love ‘em. Soooo beautiful.
Congos get over 3 inches long and really require larger than a 29G in my opinion.
So I can't keep guppies alive but I'm great with German blue rams and angelfish... Explain that!!!
I love CPDs because they look like little Rainbow Trout.
I really thought Lisa was going to recommend Betas at every tank size just for a gag. Lol
I also love rummys. I miss mine.
How do you feel about diamond tetras? I think they're gorgeous!
I absolutely love my pseudomogil luminatus in my 10g. Pigmy rainbows are my favorites for smaller tanks
Not to mention the size of the schools Neons require to feel secure. 10 or more Neons in a 5g is overload.
And guppies are just high bioload fish.
@@kinglyzard exactly!! It's not rocket science. And some smaller fish produce more waste than some large fish, which is why if you're gonna have a nano tank you need to know which small aquatic life is sustainable in there and doesn't produce as much waste.
Demasonii is a smart choice, and a lot of rocks. Good filters you can have 60 in a 75. Of course 50-70% waterchange every week.
It depends if you want a Pet fish (personality based fish) or more of a nature schooling fish.
Personality
1. Pea Puffer x1 ( have to feed them small snails for their teeth and de parasite them)
2. Betta
3. Kuhli Loach
4. Clown Killifish
5. Pigmy Corys
Schooling nature fish
1. Neon Tetra
2. Zebra danio
3. Endlers
4. Platys (I prefer the blue ones)
5. (Tie) Dalmatian Mollys
(Tie) Guppies
5 gallon tank, betta. Big shocker
Just got 2 of those black n yellow mollies in a 10gal, they are great to watch. Very active swimmers.
Our 20g has 3 oto cats, 10 ember tetras, a handful of snails that hitchhiked home with us on the plants we bought, and one gorgeous male indigo giant betta.
Happy Easter!
Love those Black and yellow mollies
Never thought I'd see something that was new to me. Until I found shell dwellers. A bit higher pH a little warmer temperature and presto very small very active and extremely aggressive (; in the way of Bettas, not in the way of jewel cichlid's I'm in love with these guys! A sandy bottom 10 gallons and off you go.)
I have six of the rummy nose mixed in with the my Neons and my Cardinals they all get along great and heavily plan a tank love them full of color always moving around always seem to be like in the center of the water column so they're always you know insights where you can see them one of the fish I'm very glad that I purchased I really enjoy them so I agree with you 100%
Angels with Harlequin Rasbora, Juli Cory's, Hillstream loaches. Everyone gets along fine and looks great.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder imagination and creativity is awesome
The yellow labs are growing. I'm still waiting for a video on their progress.
I love big fish! Red-tail catfish, koi/goldfish, plecos, stingrays, and arowana.
The Congo tetra's bodies ARE beautiful with the right light! They're my favorite tetra. I have couple that grew to at least an inch- and I loved them. I just lost them to a bacterial outbreak- and I'm upset since they are so hard to find.
When you love the channel and you're waiting for your 40 gallon breeder and he says he's going to skip it... I died a little bit inside...
Exactly...I thought the same thing and actually sighed out loud :(
Would a single Betta and a couple snails do all right in a 5 gallon tank together? I'm trying to keep my first tank small and manageable, and I like the idea of a 5 gallon. I don't want my Betta to be forever alone though :(
I keep seeing that shot of the black and gold lyretail mollies in your videos and I love it! I've got them in my 20 long and they're my favorite breed/variation of molly.
I should add, the 20 long got pretty cramped when they started really producing fry. I probably wouldn't try keeping them in a 10.
Man, i was hoping you were gonna do one for 40 breeder 😔
Love my Rummy's! Have em in a 36gal, very active!
I have been trying to find rummies so long!
Glad to be seeing the gold dust molly get some love, one of my fave tanks🤙🏼
I saw (not for sale but as display) 2 fresh water stingray in there. Absolutely beautiful and scarce.
Love the video, great advice cause I'm looking into getting into the hobby. Just one thing, please get shock mounts for your mics.. if you have good have good enough earphones you can hear every time one of you plops your hand on the table, sends a very low thud over the mic through the boom arm
We have some mollies. Started them in a 20 gallon tank. They are huge fish, much better in a 55+. Our biggest one is almost 5 inches long.
I'm definitely setting it up as a natural aquascape this time.
i have a 5 gallon tank with a betta and a 10 gallon tank with guppies
I love the CPD. i Have 10 1.5 years old in my 75 Gal with all my 7 Different types tetras. They like to hide within my Live Java ferns
i heard somewhere a while ago that some apartments don’t allow aquariums larger than 29 gallons because of the filled weight... which would explain the existence of the 29 gallon lol.
I think it's literally the perfect tank, lol, I have 3
This is one of my favorite videos! thank you.
If you keep angels here is the best advice! You want them in a 40 gallon or up and you have to even put aggression. I had three black marbles with a koi in a 29 and he was being bullied really bad so I upped them to a 40 and added two more koi. No more aggression issues.
Not big enough tank
@@Idkwhattoputhete12324 as I said, no more aggression issues.
Another great video with awesome suggestions!
For 10g tanks, I like Aphanius mentos, the Pearl Spotted Killifish.
Also, as another species tank, Pea Puffers
New to your channel HOWEVER I feel your channel is binge worthy because I have watched hours of you guys every night. Love you channel. I have ponds and aquariums and your channel is VERY informational. Thank you.
When you do your videos can you also give the tank sizes in litres. I’m a newbie and live in a country that uses the metric system.
Same here we use the metric system as well if I remember correctly it's 4.5lt to a gallon
No. This is ‘Merica. Just kidding😉
Does one or the other tend to have a better demeanor in living with other species?
yes, that would be a cool 350 of them in a 125 gal, I just picked 6 albino Rummy nose
5 is single betta,10 is guppy, 20 is molly, 29 is congo tetras, 40 is a loach, 55 is cichlids, 75 is angels, 125 and piranha, 150 is made for pleco. There's my list, selection is more specific.
It makes me so happy to know that I don't need to hear my exact tank size to get stocking ideas😂
Thanks, yall! What is your opinion of Diamond Tetras? Do the lavender tints and disco ball scales pan out?
Of course, beautiful fish. Although I agree with the guy here Congo tetra are the most beautiful tetra.
The best aquarium experience of my life was coming home to my Angels eggs covering a plant leaf. 2 Angels on one side of the tank, and the other 10 fish on the other LOL. I was able to raise 2 generations.
your videos are so educational ! my very first tank is cycling and I'll be adding fish in a few days, I'm so excited !
Great Video Lisa and John 🐠🐟🏅
I have had much better experience doing 6 female betta in a 30 gallon with guppies and endlers than I did with 5 females in a 20 long. I had lots of hiding places, territories and dither fish in both tanks. Both came from established sororities too
I find 75s and 125s are great for African cichlids but I also find 125s and 150s are good for a mix of some American cichlids like Jack Dempsey, Oscar, Saum/Green Terror. A 150 is also a good size for a lone Jaguar cichlid with river rocks holding down a long piece of driftwood if you’re a minimalist. You could breed jaguars in a 150 too
My favourite mbuna mix for a 75 is an even number of yellow labs and mix color zebras like blue and red zebras like 5 yellow labs, 2 reds, 3 blues
Rainbows - almost nothing prettier than a tank full of bosmoni & assorted others.
Man oh man. 😍😍😍.
Had a 75g tank w Sharks & Barbs, (so fun, reasonable, & pretty easy to find).
What do you do with the extra fish you get from live bearers once you are near, at, or above the recommended tank volume of fish?
Use as bait for fishing? Lol
