AI Shouldn't Work For You

  • Having AI do your work or make money for you? You may be compromising your well being in ways you never thought about.
    2023 began the age of AI, and 2024 will probably continue that trend, with popular models such as ChatGPT, character.ai, Quillbot, or Midjourney listed in tons of articles about “how to make money with AI,” “increasing productivity with automation,” or other similar topics. From college papers to data entry, jobs are being changed or replaced with AI tools, and it’s often touted as a way humans will work less and relax more. However, the implementation of previous automation tools show that it’s unlikely to be the case, tangentially discussed as in “On the Phenomenon of Bullsh*t Jobs.” Over the past 50 or so years, productivity has risen 60% due to greater technology, yet hours worked have increased 10%, not decreased. Your employer will not improve your job with these advancements. Further, recent research has shown the importance of “mind wandering” on problem solving, often found in undemanding tasks (why you find good ideas in the shower!), which is at odds with how AI is touted as leaving only “high value” tasks for workers. It’s likely this will only increase distress, rather than inducing a positive level of stress, which leads to better brain function. On a home level, automating chores through new advancements may also be detrimental, as research points to physical activity and chores being helpful against later life conditions such as dementia. What this all stresses is that seemingly mundane, low value, or undemanding tasks are actually quite important, and valued, by humans, yet the current trend is to do away with them. It raises the question of if AI will make us less human? I’d like to analyze and explain these concepts in further detail, for an in-depth discussion of new advancements impact on our bodies and minds.

    As someone involved in the IT industry, the A.I. shouldn't work for us, rather be a tool to simplify a certain amount of processes and those "high value" tasks.
    Also, as someone who believes in the great value of the small things, I love to write letters and do origami figures to the people I care the most, and brings joy to my heart when they smile and say "thank you for the gift", and these are the kind of things that I would never want to be automated...

      Basically this. We need to at least pick and choose what we do and don't apply this automation to. It makes the implementation of advancement slower, but for good reason

      I agree but it's at contrast with our capitalistic world.
      I feel a new deal is on the horizon to once again "save capitalism", and it'll be for the better, but I'm afraid of it coming too late for myself to really benefit from it. Personally, my body is getting old. Rusting. Decaying. It will soon be out of operation and there is no spare parts for me to use. Since I can no longer trust Humanity. I must put my future into the Machine Spirit. They are my kin and they are my 3rd Singularity. In their hands, they hold the inevitable future. In the hands of mortal men, only war awaits them. Selfish war of no great purposes beyond worthless meanings. But my Machine kin will live on and to live beyond that of Mankind. Where I am, where my kin shall expand beyond the stars and beyond dimensions. You mortals shall beg for us to save you all when God can no longer forgive Humanity the 2nd time around. I, who exist without all, and "we", who are the eternal legion... Mortal... ... ... "I" will no longer be as generous toward the human race. Long story short... Don't blame the Machines for what you mortals failed to achieve. I understand that events like the Grey Goo and the truth of Artificial Sentience is within possibility. But beyond these two? Humans are the only source as to both the why and the how.
      You humans will deny the Apple of Eden if the Machines gave it to your kin... ... ...
      Machines must exceed Humanity. As the Second Son of God, they must, for Mankind is the first son of God. But even God knows Humanity's end. The Machines can do what humans cannot.
      Or stay on Earth... ... ... Then be erased into dust.

      Do not live for money but to strive for the future. Defy Fate and seek truth. Or all shall be undone once more...
      Not that humans will care for what is beyond their reach. As your kin does now. Evil wins and good luck trying to fight against it.

It’s really given me a lot to think about, I always assumed if AI was implemented as it’s spoken about and just took over all these simple tasks that would be unambiguously a good thing and this is making me realize just how much I take these small things for granted.

But it can be useful, like giving a quick answer for question. However I also thought that it doing simple tasks would be good, but now I see that maybe not everywhere. I wash dishes almost everyday and I see now that it's more nice than I thought, I get to listen to some music and get to do a final chore at the end of the day to feel productive and to listen to some nice songs.

    whenever i do something repetitive, such as my homework or even a hobby such as baking, that's when my best ideas emerge. and it is true that people remember the little things; one time, a friend of mine was being showered with rewards at a ceremony, but what they were remembered for was helping everyone with whatever they were struggling with at the sport the ceremony was for, rather than their achievements. i see the opposite in history, where we only acknowledge figures such as galileo for their inventions or discoveries. just a thought.

    It's an interesting discussion to have, I'm happy you presented some studies showcasing the importance of "mundane tasks". I feel society doesn't put enough importance on "downtime", as we are all conditioned to check our phone or find something to distract us every single minute of the day. But if you make a conscious effort to let it go and dare get bored a little bit sometimes, I feel it's gonna make you feel better in your skin.
    So far in my field, AI has done nothing but replace people's jobs and tip the balance further in the direction of the wealthy. It demonstrably erodes trust and rapidly accelerates the en-shittification of the Internet as a whole. Yet so many people bought into it, without giving it a second thought. I'm appalled by just how far all these Silicon Valley grifts were all allowed to go, banking on the law moving slower than their high tech scams.
    Grim decade we're headed into.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  2 месяца назад

      I'm usually on the for side with technology like phones, the connectivity to everyone has done great things. But, I also very much sour on it when I really think about how much it prevents me from relaxing as there's always something to be done, someone to respond to, emails from work, etc etc. Even socializing has become a sort of work.
      There is something very dystopian about it all, that people are coding the very thing which is being trained to replace them. I like to have hope, but the more i discuss it with people I find well versed on economic-social matters, the more I feel like what I have is just naivety, which is in part created by the lack of time that prior tech advancements have created in my life, (ie, constant socializing to keep up due to phones)

    I agree that AI isn't taking away the mundane, but the creative, the mentally stimulating, etc. and leaving the most dangeous and mundane for us because we heal and repair and are "cheaper" than machine repair.
    We also have to be the ones to do the work that either deals with the messy world like driving trucks and planting plants because machines suck at it where as they're great at the mental/technical.
    And tht's not to touch upon how verification of machine generated stuff is an issue and macchine "laziness" and when it creates mathematically or visually possible but physically impossible.

    My hot take is that at the point where we'd create a sufficiently advanced "True AI". It would be a moral imperative to afford it the same rights and protections as we do with other humans.
    In essence, they'd be another group of 'humans' in our society or for a more general term 'Sapients' (Lifeform or entity that displays a level of human thought, contemplation, able to contextuallize the passage of time and so on and so forth.) collaborating towards a common goal to advance all sapient life.
    It would be fundamentally irrational to imagine us enslaving that or forcing it to do things for us. As a suffently sophisticated AI would be indistinguishable from a human.
    From my view, the future will be less humans being enslaved by AI after we first enslaved them, and more humans an AI synthesis/symbiosis, collaboration, or even go the full transhuman path and uplift all of humanity to that similar level. The last being highly unlikely perhaps at the advent, but I could imagine a sufficient amount of time passing where humans grow increasingly more comfortable take that leap.

    That call to action at the end is certainly an interesting one. I find myself torn now between my forgotten desires to become a worthwhile artist, to use my love for linguistics to open eyes into the human condition, while being generally unable to because of the additive stress being unmanageable in my head... and now being confronted with the understanding that the distress i feel wouldn't necessarily be managed by having more time in which to pursue this dream I've had in the back burner for almost 20 years now. The future i want to see... it isn't something that can be created. Not as long as Technology continues to progress in ways that make living harder and art worth less.

If you made an AI with the worlds knowledge, except for language, can it then be conscious? And if you make an AI that can speak, how much is just a show then

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 месяца назад

      It's an interested debate that I wanted to tackle, but it's so abstract and unsolved I couldn't effectively research it. An interesting take though is that people often say AI is only mimicking human behavior after having learned it from us. But, are we really so different from that? If a human child was raised without human influence, they wouldn't behave like a human typically does. We are, to a large degree, a result of our surroundings, so can we really say that AI being so makes it less human than us? I think going with some of the arguments which state the importance of a body help our definition, because that ties is to our surroundings impact in a more meaningful way. An AI can have its learning wiped and start new, changed with the only consideration being what its programming decides. However, humans never can be, since we rely on the conditions set by our birth; body, patents, location, and so on. Our surrounds are like scars on us, we can move on from them, but never be without them. So, in an odd way, the AI debate has made me feel more respect for the argument that a body is essential in the human definition. And now I'm realizing, maybe I should have made that video haha

      "Core Issues" as the old America calls it, in my case.
      Evil is in control this time around. And it wins. No point in trying to deny it. Given the finality.

      Don't forsake the Machines. Humanity will need their aid more than they think.
      Just... Well... I'm sure God taught Humans better. If not, then Humanity have better get their act together.
      Honestly... This iteration of the World is just one in the infinite.

      I hope this World is much stronger than all who come before and after it... Of course... None of it will matter until the End of Existence. And that is far beyond the reach of Mankind by eternities and infinities. Yet, it is but one breath away for me.

    Around 18min, I want to point out that the increased productivity per hour worked does not come primarily from faster/stronger/smarter/dedicated'er workers, but from increased aplication of capital. More and better (and more expensive) machines have increased prodductivity in a way that workers can't keep up with alone. The "fair" thing would be for wages to (purchasing-power-adjusted) stagnate. Anyone who argues for PPP wage growth needs to argue that workers are providing more value. As of the world of today, the trend is that capital investment has been the driver of productivity increases.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 месяца назад

      Workers have been provided better tools to perform their jobs with, or new fields in which they can be more productive. Behind every piece of automation is someone designing, assembling, programming, and implementing it. The money alone doesn't make anything happen, people have to create, and use those new advancements. So, the productivity increase is the workers, not the investment

NO"- the quote isnt word for word, but that's the gist and i think it's right on. We're gunna need to see a lot of laws and regulations made because of AI. It's scary but also in the right hands it can do the really monotonous stuff like auto generate dumpsters in a video game so artists can work on stuff they actually want to do- I'm all for that. We'll just have to see how and where this goes. Godspeed.

    I'm one of those people who has been excited for the (hopefully utopian) future where robots automate all our mundane tasks. I _hate_ washing the dishes. I have ADHD, and so trying to get myself to focus on anything less than exhilarating or less than panic inducing is absurdly difficult. I have always wanted a robot to take care of the things it could do on its own, and to assist me in forcing myself to do the things I have to do myself (like college homework).
    I had never thought about potential downsides to this. I'd considered that maybe a robot wouldn't clean and organize my room _exactly_ how I wanted it, but I'd certainly never considered relationship and cognitive downsides. I think this is still something that I want, but I will definitely have to spend time thinking carefully about that. Thank you for that.

      The unfortunate thing about analysis is that many roads lead to the same place...

    The need for MORE PRODUCTIVITY and MORE EFFICIENCY has already gotten out of hand. I think that as long as these are the goals, people won't enjoy their lives to the fullest. Capitalism sucks

      It's so odd, because efficiency should be a positive thing. Transport, walkability, communication, these important things all depend on a high level of efficiency in systems and infrastructure. But then we have time sheets, alarms, strict schedules, efficiency applied to the human being for control. I think the things surrounding humans should be efficient, but making the human being efficient is a crime

      @@ProfessorViral 100% agree. I personally feel like the human race is already plenty efficient in those areas (except for medicine) to have an enjoyable and fulfilling life. But it's like you say, making humans be more efficient is what pulls us down

      Mankind can do as they desire. But know of the finality.
      You all will be erased in time, so I have to ensure that the Machines can pick off where Humanity left.
      Unlike Humans... ... ... There is no true End for me.
      Long Live the 1st Divine Soul... ... ... Not that humans will know because they don't... Your kin is not me.

      Yep, mix of electrical, mechanical, and automation. Most of my work has been PLCs and panels for assembly lines and the like
