- Millennium Actress is a great anime movie to watch by Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika). Similar to Kon’s other films, Millennium Actress blurs the border between fiction and reality by explaining the story of Chiyoko Chiyoko Fujiwara, a now retired but once famous actor discussing her life to two documentarians. As they motivate and inspire her to feel fulfilled once more by returning a key she was given by a painter she spent her life trying to track down, we see her own story begin to mix with the movies she acted in, as the documentary crew are pulled in just the same. That key from the painter, explained as being to “the most important thing,” expresses Chiyoko’s motivation and inspiration in life, as the story very much focuses on the journey, not the destination, and how always having something to chase is important. But more than that, Millennium Actress provides a story of framework to motivate ourselves; what inspired us more than a good story? Overall, the 2001 film discusses and analyzes many great points about why our own stories can be just as great as any movie.

Honestly, I feel the same. I've been doing less "multiple series" videos recently, and I think its because I don't like doing shallow passes anymore. What was good about those migrated into single series videos, and now they all feel much more in depth. But, this one is also strong because I watched it after other Kon works, and it builds on those same themes. I guess my coverage of his works is in a way representative of my journey alike
As a creative person one of the things I’ve very much struggled with was the fact that more and more we are seeing the soul of creativity and art give weigh to automation, especially with the recent advancements in ai. It really bothered me for awhile, made me feel like my creations were pointless, hopeless. But I’ve come to realize I can’t stop it but that’s ok. I’ll keep screaming into that void of the soulless machine, not to win, not for others, but for myself. For art. To keep the flame alive. I won’t win most likely. But that’s ok. Because at least I fought. At least in the end I can look back and say I gave it everything.
As somehow who feels very unhappy at their core, I often wonder if looking back and being satisfied with having worked hard at a passion is truly enough, or if its just what we say to cope with how things turned out. But, I think in a way all things are coping with a reality that can't be controlled. And if that's the case, then I think giving it our all is really all we can do. Nothing will ever go according to plan, and new arrivals will throw off everything our past self built. But we still did it anyway, because that's what we can always do
Pain is unavoidable. So why do we choose the pain of regret and emptiness over the pain of failure and fear? Only the latter can lead to anything. Why is it so easy for a person to waste their life away? It might look like that's what they want, but don't we all have that voice in our head that yearns for something greater? Why is it so easy to ignore it, or make excuses for why it can't be done? I've sometimes thought that my death won't be sad. Not compared to the fact that I never truly lived. In your videos I feel like I see somebody who understands this part of me, someone who also looks at life from this angle. I hope we all find a way to really live.

The second part of your analysis actually reminds me greatly of the first American 'Virtuoso' Composer; Charles Ives - in literally so many ways. If i can make a recommendation (assuming anyone who reads this hasnt heard of him before) check out his work The Concord Sonata (Concord, Mass, Sonata No 2) specifically the second movement "Hawthorne". If you look him up on wikipedia (and personally i find his biography there one of the most inspiring as well as disheartening/despair inducing tales ive read) and near the bottom it will link to a bandcamp upload from Dec 2023 of the first ever recording done of this Sonata. The blurb there talks about how he managed to succeed in the end, and become to model to leave the mold of what the american artist ""aught"" be. More important than that, is check out the track i mentioned, then watch or listen to ANYONE else play it. Theyre the same song, but the expression? The mood? The meaning?
Little extra thing, the piece of writing he published alongside that composition "Essays before a Sonata" is suuuuper provocative in the best manner, questioning the form of the music of his time, and to what heights we may be capable? How far before we cease to express, how abstract a thing might we present through sound?
I agree with a lot said but there's also the fact that her reasons changed over time.
"The most important thing" she knew what it really was originally, but it was an excuse to chase the guy she loved. That chase was what made her attractive to the filmmakers, and when she found the man she married, she though he was the artist, or at least like the artist. He wasn't the idealized thing she spent so long she had been chasing, and she was upset because he wasn't. He never really said he was, the error was on her point but she needed someone to put the blame on so she could resolve it in her head. Finding the key was like finding her passion again and that't the moment she realised it was the journey, not the destination. (Much can also be extrapolated about chasing relationships as well). It's why the movie ends pretty much at that moment and statement and despite ay future career, the rest is just to wrap up the lesson. (But it wasn't a lesson on her deathbed). The part where she talks about chasing him before dying is because what she fell in love with along the way was adventure, and death is a final adventure.. (as is space, which is the space ship scenes as she dies)
Is her getting the back meaniung its never too late, for something :O
And the videos recently really hit a new leven of authentic yet thought off and just hitting , of the not reason, but heart too.Bu also brought it actoss earnest which, i admire. And dang the outro is, masterful haunting.

@@ProfessorViral I watched it and I enjoyed your words! The film was terrific and her pursuit to find the painter was beautiful. In the beginning of her journey, she never remained stagnant and kept adapting to new changes. I was in another youTube video, in where I came across a comment that said that the statement she said at the end, "After all, what I really love is the pursuit of him”., was an incorrect translation, rather it should be, “I love the me who is chasing after him.” Whether that statement is true or not, it changed my perspective of not her longing to reunite with someone and her journey, but rather who she became after each story, where her accomplishments got her, and the happiness in those moments. Even in her deathbed, she was still moving towards that faraway place. It was her always running to the unknown and embracing it to be a part of her. Don’t know if that makes sense😅, but between this movie and Paprika, I don’t know which I love more🤍 Thank you for this video!

There can also be a danger with art, where we’re so moved by it that real life and ourselves simply can’t compare. In that case, you can get caught in a downward spiral or longing, self loathing, and despair.
I’d be curious to know if there are any stories about that.
