WHAAAT NO WAY!! I never expected this! Wei Yi is my favorite chess player in this generation! Never expected him to come out on an english interview. This just made my night!
I don't know in what direction chess will develop in the coming years. However, I believe that years and centuries will pass, and people like Magnus, Hikaru and Wei Yi will be remembered as titans of thought who spoke from 64 squares of the chessboard. And they will continue to inspire the world with their legacy. China can be proud of such masters as Wei Yi. As for Ding Liren, my advice is for him to devote two hours a day to physical training and sports, this will help him relieve stress and prepare his body and mind for chess challenges. I don't mean regular walks, but moderate-intensity sports that will tire his muscles a bit, allow him to sweat, and help his head work better. And sleep better.
Disappointed there weren’t any questions about him being the only top player who plays the bishop’s game opening in classical. I learn from him each game he plays!
I always wanted to hear more about Wei Yi. Amazing podcast! It's very interesting to learn about his life and that he went to Tsinghua University. He also comes across someone who is very honest and likeable. Great interview!
Keep doing podcast of top chess players! I am a super fan of all these guys 2750+ love seeing you do this content. Chess fans definitely need it. Thank you
Hello, thx for the podcast, I just discovered your channel. Wei Yi is my favourite chess player. I was hoping you to ask him about his "Immortal game" against Bruzon, it would have been amazing to see how he thinks. You earn a follow from France 😉
I've met him in Astana this August (we both played at the World Rapid & Blitz Teams championship), I've even spoken to him a bit in Mandarin and invited him on the podcast. Unfortunately, he declined the offer, but maybe we can make it next time!
They kind of had chances in GCL... and also when Alkaloid got 2nd in european club cup but they only interviewed the three Indian players from the team.
According to the URS (universal rating system) which eliminates historically accrued rating and just measures a players' strength in the present, as well as combining all three main time formats, Wei Yi is the second strongest player in the world right now with a rating of 2813. I agree, given his recent performances that he is indeed currently the worlds second strongest player across all formats; however given that Gukesh just posted the second highest performance rating EVER, AND beat Wei Yi he may be stronger in classical. Thanks Greg, recently you have been bringing great interesting guests on your show. I will like comment subscribe and share to help boost you in the algorithms.
The French Defense is damn hard to play as black. At the lower levels it is White who struggles but in the intermediate level once white knows some plans it is damn hard to defend with. People say the Najdorf is a lot of memory, I say no. You can play the Najdorf or any Sicilian without much theory. But to play the French where White takes spaces on the kingside it is almost like Black must know what he is doing. Almost move my move opening knowledge is needed. It is not unsound but just a hard opening to play. On the positive side if you know what you are doing and know all the plans it is a superb weapon.
How did bro say najdorf is less move-by-move than french, Bg5 Najdorf, english attack, and many many other setups require very accurate and precise moves, french does too, but there are less lines that are so critical
I know quite a lot of humble Russian chess players who are increadibly successful (Artemiev is a great example, he's around 2700), so I'd advise you not to over-generalize!
My wishlist of candidates players: 1. Arjun Erigaisi 2. Fabiano Caruana 3. Alireza Firouzha 4. Nodirbek Abdusattorov 5. Wei Yi 6. Jan-Krzysztof Duda 7. Vincent Keymer 8. Parham Magsoodloo All of them play exciting chess and would ensure an amazing tournament, no matter who wins.
Guy goes to university, doesn’t do much prep, and wins Tata Steel just like that. Legend.
Shows up, wins, and refuses to elaborate.
The most impressive part is that he achieved all of these milestones without ever arousing suspicion from Kramnik.
Only from Ian lol

Should have played a game of Chinese chess instead since you talk about how you both play it
