I like how different to other covers the guitar stands out clear. Even in the original it tends to get lost in the bass and drum line.

One day after the RHCP first published this song, we had no idea how it was played by looking at live concerts or something. So we guessed the beginning was played with a pick but sadly we were wrong. It happens :)
However! Parallel universe, this is the place, dont forget me, Fortuned faded, venice queen are a few examples of Flea playing with pick (check em out live)

The Interlockers your absolutely correct. he didn't use a pick for this song and he has a video about how he slaps with his thumb and plucks the bass just the exact same way you were doing it. good job guys this is by far one of my favorite chili peppers joints. they'll be here in Orlando in April and I'm hoping to go see them.
