Grey Goo Review - Why was this Game Forgotten?

  • Grey Goo is a RTS game I very much looked forward to before its release. With great looking cinematics and the team at Petroglyph Games that made Star Wars Empire at War it making it. It seemed to be a great game in the making but in trying to do too much the game ended up falling flat. Which I wish wasn't the case as the people at Petroglyph Games have made some of my favourite games.

I was one of the voice artists who recorded some of the characters voices. I never played the game though. It’s really cool to see someone go through the game so well and show what it was like. Thanks! Great video.

Goo is extremely powerful because you can literally wait until you're just about to fight the enemy to choose your unit comp. Unformed goos are super fast too and excellent scouts. They do effectively have a higher unit cap because the small units are produced in multiples from a single goo.

They had a ton of amazing ideas with this game, then failed on the follow through :(
I played the whole campaign a long time ago and really enjoyed the goo faction, actually. They're very micro intensive, however. The optimal strategy with Mother Goos is actually since they gather resources all at once then digest them over time, is to rotate them over resource nodes and alternate between that and hiding in cliffs and the like. Very focused on mobility and hit and run- after all, you can just run away over a cliff with the mother goo if necessary. The other advantage is you can look at a composition, then instantly build what you need to counter it. Staying in place and defending is kind of the antithesis of what you're supposed to do.
You mentioned Bastions, which I thought was funny. Those units seem like the essence of something that might have been a very interesting tool in multiplayer, but less so in the campaign! Sure they soak fire, but they also block vision which is an interesting mechanic. Of course, that's less effective in a campaign mission, but if Grey Goo ever got big, I wonder if that could develop some interesting strategies.

on our discord where we still play today, bastion+crescent is the bread and butter of most goo players lol. very good units when used properly, wich could be said of almost every thing on the goo roster lmao

It's a great tragedy that this game didn't succeed. It has some really cool concepts and solid foundations.
Unfortunately it took too many notes from what SC2 was at the time.

"Klepacki", lol, not "Keplacki". And the iconic Red Alert song is called "Hell March", not "Hell's March".
Completely agree with the review though. That story and campaign could've been a lot more interesting and complete, but was just a glorified tutorial for a multiplayer game no one really cared about.

I like many of frank klepacki music
I just don't this this game style fit with his music style.
For the game music that he make in the under-rate game Universe at war Earth Assault was really good

Yeah usually his music greatly improves the games they are in. Like I can't imagine the Command & Conquer series without it, but you might be on to something about it not fitting in this game.
Universe at War did have a pretty good OST.

I tried to play the single player campaign, I just couldn't get into it. I uninstalled it and played the C&C remakes instead.

Petroglyph just can't do it any more. One new idea after the other, all pretty good in concept, but they keep trying to either make a pathetic and out of date C&C Remake, which is borderline the most retarded thing any RTS developer could do. That shit was popular 100 years ago and only a handful of people played it, compared to the masses now. Or they make insanely risky experimental RTS games like that WW1 Game that also looks completely boring.
So yes. Unless Petro gets their nostalgia heads out of their nostalgia butts they will never make it big again.
