I was excited for the woman until I saw they were giving her two Chevettes. I guess they knew she would need a spare for when the first one died on the way home.
I was thinking exact same thing…
Laughed when they said comes with a cigarette lighter. Lol
There's a comedian who does a joke about that car stopping out a dime! His punchline was it can't get over it!
A neighbor family had a Chevettes. They serviced them at Chevy dealer and had them for over a decade. Traded both in on a Lumina, which they also had for over a decade.
@@HHH-ye1ro The Lumina wasn't much better!
Laying in bed at midnight watching old videos of TPIR, Bob was just the best 💜
I’m doing the same thing. It’s addicting
Ay I am right there with you! I am watching them on old skkool Dell PC.
@@Wizardof haha love it!
What'd I do?? OH OK. HAHA. I have a massive monitor that I use as "TV" because the new ones like to SPY on consumers...@@laurenjeanvp5131
They should do an episode of Price Is Right where it is all retired games.
@John Williamson who said they had to use the original props?
They do something like that with Cover-Up. They have pictures of retired games in the area where they place the numbers in the price of the car.
Yes!!!!!
Don't worry, with the current state of the show they will all be soon retired.
@John Williamson The original props are not gone. They are housed at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY in the National Archives of Game Show hHstory.
I watch the price is right and I’ve seen every game. This is the first time I’ve seen this game.
Thank you, I thought it was just me.
That was awesome. She understood the game and played it to perfection. Very awesome!
She made a wise choice on choosing the rear window defogger; you need it to keep your hands warm as you're pushing them down the road.
Lol
She played it perfectly. She needed two expensive options and two super cheap ones to cover that spread - which is exactly what she did.
Miss this game. Let's bring it back better than ever.
Alot of the old TPIR Pricing Games that were retired due to mechanical issues of the props could be brought as they can use digital flat screen tech.
I've never seen this game. Ever. Glad she won.
Fitting that the first ever $2 bid won two cars!
Congratulations, Elizabeth! Best retired pricing game in America!
This was one of the earliest episodes using the new 1983 theme package
Yea 1983 had a brand new look to much of the show that it needed.
@@PackinStackin Outside of the turntable the show didn't get any set changes at that time. THe next big one would be the showcase podia in the season 13 premiere.
Bob Barker is exceptional! Lots of love!
One of the best hosts ever, him and Johnny
Before my time but i still grew up watching the show in the 90’s (mostly during the summer or when i was home “sick” lol)
I liked this game with the sounds the car was making. It shouldn't have been retired.
Her legs were indeed a pair of rockers!
I've never seen this game in my life and I've been watching since the early 70s.
She played not only this game perfectly, but also the IFUB perfectly. I know people HATE that strategy, but it's still valid, and it worked.
I love Bob Barker! Such a man!!
A Pair Of .. Rockers !! 💺
Nice Wager by Elizabeth !
This one brings back memories. I bought my first NEW car in 1973 and paid $2700 cash as it sat on the showroom floor. I'd almost forgotten what we paid for cars back then.
😧
What kind of car?
@@GRosa250 a canary yellow Mazda RX-3. Got stationed at George AFB and it didn't have a/c. A good car other than that.
@@billirvin9057 that’s a cool little car, I’d buy a few of them for that price lol
I remember when my father bought a new Plymouth in 1972 for $2900
Damn, I do not remember this game. And I have been watching TPIR since the late 1970's, sitting home from school, sick. Or, sometimes faking it. lol
Airdate: May 9, 1983
You've got it, Kevin N.!
It’s Optional was just like both the Range Game, and Grocery Game combined.
They need to bring this game back
I think they retired it because the prices of car options aren't something that's widely known to the general public.
yes... DREW Completely Destroy the show, their stupid fear of the flu haha now the fun of the show is gone... it's DUMB as you can watch America got Talent and it's jampack with people all close together, TPIR don't see that I suppose haha.
I thought sure she was going to blow it, but she didn't.
Nah. They do need a new dedicated two-car game (I myself have drawn plans for one), but not one that's about something as weird as optional extras (which there really aren't that many of anymore). The only good thing about this game was the two-car payout, as evidenced by Elizabeth's husband in the audience being stoked that he got a car, too.
They do need to bring back Hurdles, Barker's Markers, and Split Decision though, as well as have Super Ball on primetime specials. Plenty of retired games that would be received better than this one.
@@BlueCrystalTear I loved Split Decision as a kid I heard it was retired because no one knew how to play it but here I was 9 years old and I would have won it almost every time I saw it
I bet those cars made that same sound as the game.
😂😂😂
Has anyone seen a Chevette on the road in the last 20 years?
Nope. You had to be a small person to drive that .
The number of wins in this game must have affected the budget so hard - sometimes winning too much is a problem.
And it wasn’t until 2000 when Triple Play debuted that a pricing game offers multiple cars again.
October 2, 2000, to be precise, Mark 🚩.
What budget? The prizes were donated to the show by the manufacturers for marketing purposes. The winner's budget would have been affected because they had to pay taxes on the prizes they won.
If Bob is to believe, this is the first time we see $1 and $2 in Contestants' Row. It might have happened before, though episodes with fur coats might make it difficult to pinpoint when it exactly happened.
Elizabeth won not one car ! 🚗 But two cars 🚗 🚗 !! On the now retired It's Optional 👏 👏 - Well Played ▶️ !

Never bid $1 unless you’re last!!
Clyde was cute.
Thongs change scent from one end to the other. Knowledge is power. God bless
So basically this is the Grocery Game but with car options.
I love it when people win.
In all fairness saying a dollar is trying to cut off everyone else so fair play to her/
Odd that player 3 said $1
That's usually only something player 4 does.

For some reason I don't remember this game. Thank you for posting.

$1, $2, $3, $4 in that order will be hilarious.
I drove the family Chevette when I was a teen. To be honest, it was a very decent city car. Too bad my parents weren't mechanically inclined and never bothered to learn how to properly maintain their cars. It wasn't until I hit my fifties that I finally bought my first car so I could learn how to work on it myself. I would have loved to learn amateur auto mechanics on the Chevette because it was mechanically very simple to work on.

Yep 👍🏻!
From the May 9, 1983, episode of THE PRICE IS RIGHT ▶️.

That was awesome, she eliminated the $1 bid with her $2, and then won 2 cars!
Holy crap I'm back at my grandparent's house!
She must have watched "Better Off Dead" - 2 dollars
Cars include a cigarette lighter.. ahh..the 70's..a must have..the hell with reliable brakes..😄
Opps..the 80's...but same thought process
I love it!! It’s hard to imagine a time when American automobiles came in small economy versions. We need more of these economy cars in light of climate change
Remember when cars had options. Everything is standard now, geez has been for 20 years.
Ask any new Porsche buyer.... They don't publish anymore the list on print (only online) because it got so huge. Options can more than double the price or any Porsche sports car or crossover. Other luxury brands may be almost as bad.
she won two crappy cars!
$2 Elizabeth wins 2 NEW cars
🎶 Beep Beep .. Beep Beep .. Yeah ! 🚗 🚗
That thing she was with was completely bizarre.
So hard to get out of the 2020s mindset. Also I wish they showed the other options for curiosity sake. I figured tilt steering wheel might be one of the sub 100 ones. (oh, and floor mats, boy do modern vehicle packages bilk people on those...)
I can give you a rough estimate on some of the other options based on other playings from the era. Power steering was around $200 (usually $190-$210 based on model.), power brakes were $95 the one time I saw them picked. Light group $45, I would assume that rear floor mats are comparable in price to the front floor mats. The only one I don't know is the tilt steering wheel. I hope that assuages some of your curiosity.
Why did they retire the pricing game It's Optional?
Two reasons: Cars were getting expensive and the game was too familiar with Grocery Game.
The game was too easy, resulting in the game giving away too many cars.
It was also pure guessing, unless you go out pricing options on cars as a hobby.
If you watch the other playings of It´s Optional on this channel, one thing you may notice is that it was won a lot, which was probably not what they wanted when the prize was two cars...even Chevettes. You might also notice that every win resulted from a similar combination of choices: air conditioning, automatic transmission, and then one or two of the obviously cheap items like floor mats. I think it became too obvious that you could win by choosing that combination of items and they retired the game to preserve the budget.
Maybe it was b/c of this playing and the "dead giveaway" when they separated the front & rear floor mats . She should have picked the rear ones once she saw the price of the front ones lol
That woman was a real dope betting $1. You only bet that when you're the LAST bidder.
Can we get new car prices like this again?
0:02 ribbon are in wrong order..
tfw the A/C is more expensive than an automatic transmission: 😵💫
It's been a while, but that Staff Sergeant's ribbons look wrong. I THINK the middle bar is upside down and should be on the bottom. How about it, 'Nam Vets?
For this one, I would have chosen the following 3 Options first.
1: Air Conditioning ($625)
2: Automatic Transmission ($395)
3: Power Brakes ($95)
$625 + $395 + $95 = $1,115
$1,185 - $1,115 = $70
Sound the buzzer, sound the bell! Lol 😆 🤣
Fireball Bob
The paperboy from "Better Off Dead" would be proud of that bid. 😁
I didn't ask for a dime!
2 New Chevy SHOVE ITS
First prize winner gets a Chevette. Second prize winner gets two Chevettes.
I barely see any 80s vehicles, most of them were trash.
Bob makes reference ton an old show with Groucho Marx in it You Bet Your Life . 2:31
You know, I would faint too if I had to pay the 30% gameshow tax on 2 chevettes that I'm just going to leave on the side of the road anyways

I had 2 Chevettes , this was a booby prize.
Yes Bob… u were “a busy boy” 🫢
I wonder if either of those two cars are still being driven...
No.
Curious to know how they paid (or was required to pay) for those cars. Because, at least now, you have to pay for the taxes on the winnings before getting said winnings. Cash or goods.
Yep, that $1 trick only works if you are the final bidder.
Subsequent bidders could decide that everybody underbid (max+1) or decide the price was in between bids. No reason you have to be the final bidder.
Pair means 2
Yep 👍🏻!
Am i turning into my grams ? Im soo addicted to tpir

LOL seriously? you have to pay over $500 just for A/C?
Nowadays A/C is STANDARD EQUIPMENT on ALL vehicles no matter the price.
Just like automatic transmission is a standard option, whereas these days manual transmission is considered "luxury". Who would have thought 30 years ago manual cars would be almost obsolete these days?
what a way to retire the pricing game
Here's 2 Chevettes. That'll teach you to bid $2.
2 Chevy Chevettes? I guess she could have driven one until it fell apart, and then drove the other one. A total of about 4 years.
She should give one of the cars to the lady who bid $1

Yep 👍🏻!
Kids would not know what a cigarette lighter is these days.
I absolutely hated it when someone would bid one dollar over someone else. They should not allow them to do that evil bid. That is why I do not watch the show anymore. I just could not stand it anymore.
She stated, "Floor Mats". Barker repeated "Floor Mats". Neither one specified "Front" or "Rear". Barker just assumed "Front" without verifying. This MAY have changed the outcome (though I doubt). Just saying.
Listen again. She says it faintly, and Bob says it very clearly. Put the closed captioning on. That shows it very clearly that "front" was stated.
@@damsbaug33 I stand corrected. You're right. What she said was very faint. And his not quite as much. I originally listened to it 3x and still didn't catch it at 1st. Kudos to you!
She did say "front". She had only $15 room left.
Why didn't she pick the rear floor mats after the picking the front and seeing what the price was? Wonder if this was why the game was retired due to the easy giveaway on this playing?
@@Freeway4sho Well, they did give away two cars, too. She probably thought it would not be enough. They are smaller mats...
5K for a new car. There are parts that cost that much now.
You need to adjust it for Bidenflation to get the current price.
Wow, I cannot even imagine a time, when the Chevy Chevette, was actually a new car. Lol. I unfortunately had the displeasure of owning one, in 1998. It was a 1977 model year, worst car that I have ever owned...lol
