  • Thank you for the great feedback on our first video - here if you missed it: • DR SAM BUNTING ON...SK...
In this post, Dr Sam describes the typical female hormonal acne and what your first crucial steps of attack could be.
We are trying to answer as many comments as possible so please bear with us. :)
Topical Retinoids are next, followed by hyperpigmentation and rosacea.
Dr Sam's (not Caroline's) recommendations for some products are....
    Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser
    La Roche Physiological Cleansing Gel
Bioderma Sensibio Water in a pinch (eg for gym/plane)
LRP Effaclar H or Toleriane Riche
    Bioderma Sebium Hydra
    Obagi Hydrate
    Then anti-inflammatory leave-on product AM:
    Effaclar Duo
    Epionce Lytic Lotion
Some form of BPO 2.5-5% e.g. Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster
    Then retinoid for evenings
    Avene Triacneal
    LRP Redermic R
'If this fails, you probably need a prescription.'

Thank you Caroline for introducing Dr Bunting to our lives. Because of your vids I have now booked an appointment with her. You have helped me understand a hell of a lot about skin care routine, products etc which have really helped me with my adult acne. I have booked the appointment because I'm desperate for Dr Buntings help with my pigmentation issues and what seems to be overly sensitive, adult acne prone face. Again if it weren't for your blog, RUclips vids I wouldn't know what to do! I would continue spending all my earnings on purchasing expensive products out of desperation in the hope that it would cure my acne/pigmentation face. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, you are truly appreciated! xx

Since starting to read your blog I have really been kinder to my skin when I get hormonal breakouts - I used to attack my spots like some sort of military operation lol! Much more gentle now and use oils to promote healing.
Off topic but loving the animal print! Sam looks amazing :)

Great video ladies! Thank you for listing so many products and when to use them. I'm eager to try Dermalogica BP, as previously I have used medicinal tubes of BP 2.5 or 5% bought online (amazon), but recently many brand either got discontinued or had production problems with sourcing ingredients here in UK apparently? I ended up buying a tube of Benzacne which is a Polish version of BP, different to Quinoderm or Panoxyl that's for sure. It has grains in it! So can only use at night....a bit annoying as I then have to miss on vitamin A ingredients...Here's hoping some of the recommended products in this video work well for my mild hormonal acne :D

Thanks for the great advice and product recommendations, I'm a fan of La Roche Posay and I use the toleriane cleanser and moisturiser, so I'm going to expand and get the retinol cream and effeclar duo.. Hopefully I can clear up my adult acne once and for all, or at least make it a little more comfortable.

Thanks to this video this is the first time in YEARS that my skin is completely clear. Thank you so much for the time and effort that you put on you channel, it is so awesome and helpful!
For the record I am using the La Roche Posay Effaclar purifying foaming gel in the morning + Effaclar Duo+ and a cleansing oil or Cetaphil + the Avene Triacneal expert at night; it has been 4 months.
I finally feel good in my own skin, thanks to you both!

As I too have gotten older (33) and of course after the birth of my son I've seen a real change in my skin all around. I have normal to dry skin, although I've never asked my dermatologist to look me over just to find out what skin type I fall under. Being that my skin leans toward the drier side I never would have thought blackheads and congested pore would be a problem of mind but they are. After all I do get a blemish once on a while and it's usually a monster of a thing. Where as my blackheads are always there, mostly clustered on my forehead, by the corner of my mouth and then I get a blackhead / whitehead here and there that come out too. What really gets me is that I do have lines on my forehead that sit under my blackheads. My pores are also a lot bigger then they've ever been but very noticeable across the mid face (straight from hear to hear) I need a facial beauty regime and do not know where to even begin I just know that whatever I'm doing now is not working to address any if these issues. I know yiu love your acids and I'm really wanting to get started with an acid since I've never tried. Caroline do you have any advise on where I start?

Thank you so much for this video. Sam - The Dermalogica special clearing booster has been discontinued. Could you suggest an alternative stronger BPO to use after moisturiser in the am? I have been using the Effaclar Duo in the am and occasionally Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel at night but want to switch the ingredient to the morning as you suggest. Thanks very much

Thank you so much Caroline and Dr. Sam! I do not understand the Clarisonic or harsh scrub craziness. I am a life long hereditary acne sufferer. Unlike men, Accutane solved my severe body acne but did not give me complete relief for my face. My father, who I inherited my acne from, had problem skin until his death at 75. I am sure that I, too, will always have to address it. I am on an antibiotic, spironolactone and Epiduo (retinol/benzoyl). I must be very compliant to keep my skin under control. Acne skin is sensitive and should be treated gently. Apparently it is not unusual for skin like mine to have other sensitivities. Caroline, when you talk about how a product smells, I have to avoid it. I cannot tolerate perfumes at all nor sunscreen on a daily basis. I am also 55 years old and menopausal, lucky me, and so I have more issues now in my "muzzle" area. So what I am really saying is that my skin is a cluster @&$+ and my dermatologist is my best friend. I think this series is important because acne can be debilitating and good advice is needed to counteract the crazy voodoo that is circulated as legit skincare.

Thank you! Though my skin looks like I have no issues, and little scarring due to the medical care I have given it for years, I have to be vigilant with my skincare. Even at my age, if I miss any part of my regimen, I will be a bumpy mess in 48 hours! I guess the lesson for those in my situation is to stay the course and accept that like any other chronic ailment, it isn't going away. I had to shed lots of tears to get to this place, so hugs and calming skin thoughts to everyone here!

For me the benzoyl peroxide is the only thing that really works on acne,no doubt. But it´s very strange (and sad) that I went to almost all the doctors in my city and no one as prescribed it to me, and all the stuff they gave me never worked...I just discovered BP in the Internet really, and since then my face got a lot better... got to love internet!

you mean lrp redermic r and not retriderm, do you? because i can't find it in the name of retriderm. lrp describes this serum as being an anti-wrinkle treatment, but you say, it's also good for hormonal acne. why doesn't lrp name it as being an adult acne treatment as well? that's what i'm confused about.

Hi Caroline, great post as usual, I have been waiting for this! For those of us with skin that can't wait to peel off as soon as it sees any BPO or retinoid, is there any serum that you feel would help hydrating and taking down the redness when paired with the other steps of this routine? Thank you :) Diana

    • @dianabarbara2948
      @dianabarbara2948 9 лет назад

I understand the concept of pairing down, but when using BPO and retinoids my skin went wild and I got a little worried for all this peeling. Not knowing whether peeling can damage the skin in the long run (can it?) I just changed routine altogether (Cetpahil gentle cleanser, at night Caudalie Vinosource serum and Sorbet, and over day same serum plus Embyolisse lait creme concentré under the makeup). No peeling and no dehydration anymore but all the red bumps are right back there, driving me nuts O.O Maybe there is a good compromise?

Caroline... this video makes me want to cry (in a good way, I guess! Relief that these products may help). I recently went off of BC and my face has broken out like crazy(if you drew a line from where my top lip is across my face, everywhere below that line on my face is broken out in a perfect U shape. That part did make me giggle "from the T zone to the U zone" perfect description). It looks worse than it did when I was a teenager. I don't even want to put make up on right now because I feel like "what's the point?" Anyways.... In the description bar you say "Dr. Sam's recommendations, not Caroline's" where do you disagree with her/do you have other things you would recommend? Would you recommend the other products one should use while dealing with this issue, such as the face cream? Make up? What about hydrating serums and sun screen, do you still use those? I've been lucky to have fairly good skin up until this point, so I'm at a loss of what to do. As Dr. Sam points out, there is a ton of information online so people often just slather products left and right. Your opinion is the only one I trust. Thank you for your help!

Thanks, Caroline...love your videos and blog!

Hi, do you think there are huge benefits to using an all natural skin care routine like the oil cleansing method, for example? And I always hear people talking about this 'acid mantle' that you have on your face, that you have to protect. Is that real or bollocks? Xxx

    • @gretchenlaib7345
      @gretchenlaib7345 9 лет назад +1

acid mantle is very real! google it and read about it in a scientific context. i know a bunch of people for whom oil cleansing saved their skin. really depends on the oil though... those with acne-prone skin only want to be using oils high in linoleic acid like safflower seed oil (best), mineral oil, sunflower oil, passionfruit (marajuca) oil, or chardonnay grapeseed oil. safflower oil makes my oily skin amazing. i get mine from Garden of Wisdom. janky site but good products imo

What's made a huge impact on my hormonal acne is cutting out milk. I was drinking a latte every morning and getting one huge zit on my chin after the other. One day I quit milk cold turkey (I'm still having cheese and yogurt in moderation), and they stopped immediately when I did that. I truly think these things come from within -- I kept blaming them on products I was using but now I'm using those products again with no problem. Hmm.

Hormonal acne is the bane of my life, I can have lumps all along my jaw for weeks.
I've been using PanOxyl gel cream and it's really helping. As well as Retinol Reface by Indeed labs - to be honest I think I could be doing with a stronger Retinol product, but I'm not sure which (affordable) brands carry it.
I will look into the French Pharmacy brands for skincare and makeup from now on.
I have noticed some diference in my skin since starting to use this regime - and Caroline thanks to your advice I've not been using foam cleansers for years now, I use hot cloth ones, balms or oils.

benzyl peroxide does absolutely nothing for me, something with salicylic in it works better for my spots at that time of the month. I went on the contraceptive pill for a few years which really helped my skin, When I came off it I was scared my skin would go crazy again but actually it has stayed much better than it used to be in my early 20s (I'm now 27). I had tried the technique of pairing everything back and honestly at the time the pill was the only thing that made a substantial difference.

Hi, I am 23 years old and have very dry, senstive skin with moderate-severe excema. I can't use any kind of fragrance on my skin (essential oil included) and currently use Clinique take the day off cleansing balm, a Clinique eye cream and oilatum facial cream for my skincare, throughout my teens I had no acne at all but over the last 2 years I have started to develop angry spots that remain under the skin around my chin, cheeks and jaw line. The spots scar and return in the same place although rarely come to a head. I have ordered the cetaphil cleanser, effaclar duo and triaclene as recommended. Are there any additional products you can recommed for my skin problem/type? I am always wary of spot treatment because of the dry and sensitive nature of my skin

i have the exact same skin type you do (im 17) and i highly recommend the brands first aid beauty (no fragrance in anything and affordable), origins (most ive tried but not all), and josie maran (if you are sensitive to argan oil then i would ignore this but her products are a skin wonder. i use the argan cleansing oil religiously not only for cleansing but as an emergency face mask. put on for 10 min all over the face, wipe off with a damp wash cloth/flannel, and it will make all the dry flaky eczema patches disappear! (as well as the bumps) awesome for before makeup. hope that helps! :)

Thank you :) I have wanted to try first aid beauty products before but haven't as I didn't realise that they were fragrance free, I will give your suggestions a try.

I'm slightly scared to ask this but.. do any of you have any experience/thoughts about *APPLE CIDER VINEGAR* ?
(This is not the regular apple vinegar that you can pick up in the supermarket, but the kind with the 'mother' included - have a search for related videos ) - Applied diluted, so it's not so strong. I guess the theory is based around 'correcting' the PH level of your skin (alkalising?!).
I've been using it twice a day now (applied topically as a toner) and I have to say my skin is better, but other things could be attributed to its improvement. Would LOVE to know other people's thoughts on ACV. I want to love it, simply because it's a natural solution, which in turn is pretty cost effective. Even if it is a little challenging to track down ACV in the England (not the case in the U.S.)
*Good luck with your acne battles everyone xx*

Beatrice Myers If it works for you go for it. I prefer a more complicated formula personally. xx

Thanks for your reply Caroline Hirons *I'm slightly sick of smelling like fish and chips to be honest..*
I know what you're saying. I've also been using the *Eucerin* Demo Purifyer range, which I've been quite impressed with. I might go back and give *LRP* another go, as per Dr Sam's suggestions.
Thanks for all the info on acne at the moment. It's shattered my confidence in the past, but I'm learning to be happier (whilst still trying to banish it!) *xx*

They French are so much smarter about skin care. Every French line I have every tried has worked better for me..We are so behind in the U.S.,,, IMHO.

And how can we control hormonal acne internally (not through birth control)?
And what would you suggest is the next best thing for people like me whose face just swells up after using a pea sized spot treatment of b.peroxide ? Thank you both for these video s 😆

How do you treat hormonal acne from within? Apart from birth control and roaccutane. Because I've tried almost every skin regimen and topical acne treatment including retin-A but nothing seems to help my acne in the long term.

My hormonal acne significantly began to improve once I cut out dairy/sugar from my diet. It still came up but it wasn't as aggressive and didn't happen as often. x

My dermatologist put me on spironolactone (a diuretic that helps remove excess androgens from the female body) and it worked wonders for me. It--in combination with a few topical creams--cleared my hormonal jawline acne in just 3 weeks.

ripluanne Hi, just wondering if you are still taking it? Or did you stop, and if so has it returned? I'm wary of taking a medication because I don't want to get stuck on something for life!

I seem experience bad reactions from most of retinol products b/c of other ingredients in the formulations that my skin can't tolerate. I'm wondering if Sunday Riley Luna is strong enough as a retinoid to help with female hormonal acne? It's one of the only ingredient lists I can get on board with. Can the trans-retinol ester have the same helpful effect as Dr Sam's talking about from other retinol products?
