- I’m going to tell you EVERYTHING!!!
These are the tips you won’t find anywhere else
This week’s video is my ultimate guide to using retinoids. This was partly driven by my horror that one of my team still didn’t feel confident enough to start a retinoid despite being immersed in skincare for months. This filled me with shame! So given that last week’s How To… video seemed to really help, I thought I’d give retinoids the same treatment. Is there such a thing as too much detail? I hope not. So if you’ve been putting off starting a retinoid (and I know many of you have) then this is for you!
As always thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

Thank you for these gold nuggets! I’ve learned so much, it makes a difference how to properly use these products! So helpful, truly appreciate this info!
Very informative! Thank you for the demo, really helpful!
Excellent and straightforward video. THANK YOU Dr. Sam!
Love the way you explain everything by doing it practically xx
You just explained why the random red patches around my nose! Now I know how to deal with it. Thank you so much, incredibly helpful x
Thank you! I really appreciate the actual demonstration!
Thanks so much for the live demo, Dr! All the best!
Brilliant video for all the information you need and given so clearly 🙌 Thank you for the great demo :)
Would love to see an advanced one - eyes, neck and chest.
And a vitamin C and peptide video would be amazing :)
Your skin looks amazing! wish I knew this before I started, I used it wrong at all dangerous areas, 4 days later things went bad, had to stop and wait for recovering...thanks so much for sharing...
Please do a video on treating acne/blemishes on the body - shoulders, upper back and chest 🙏
Love your videos, advice and products xxx
thanks so much Dr Sam, I love your video's it has specially helped me with my hormonal breaks and your guidance about azelic acid was my biggest life changer many thanks, when you have time if you could show an advanced Rentin A guide as I have been using it for few years now.
This lady is so clear in her instructions and explanations! Love it!
Excellent comprehensive information that I haven't heard anywhere else 👍
Yes please we need this series, you’re so underrated so many could benefit from your advice and opinions!
Looking at your face without cosmetics is the skin I’m trying to have. Just beautiful.
Thank you for this! I'm new to skin care and adapalene for acne, so this tutorial was exactly what I needed and nothing I didn't! This was perfect. I see how I applied it slightly wrong tonight (despite having heard about using moisturizer near lips, eyes and nose corners first, and then putting moisturizer on again after), so I will definitely be fixing those mistakes tomorrow and on!
your skin is beautiful, thank you for showing the routine!
Another great video. So clear and so science-based. Thank you!
thanks. more precise and helpful than my doctor. yesterday was my first day on it and i can already feel a slight irritation/burn. hopefully these tips will help going forward
Thank you very much, especially for tip about covering retinoids with moisturizer, i'm not complete novice, but had problem with spreading retinoids into eyes area.
Thank you! It was very informative. Would you show us how to use retinol on eyes and neck safely and info about putting them around their and what we can expect?
This was extremely helpful. For myself, it's so different between reading and watching. Thank you!
Amazing! Glad it was helpful! ❤️
Nice demo. Helpful for me . Just started about 2days ago. Thanks so much
Excellent presentation and easy to understand - I feel much more confident moving forwards with use of this product- THANK YOU so much!!!❤
Thank you for very practical techniques. Could you please make a VDO for those who have been on Retin-A for over a year? How can we improve the efficacy when the skin is well tolerant?
Fantastic video, as always! Could you please make a video about how to use retinoids with Soolantra and azelaic acid for rosacea skin?
Very informative and well demonstration video. I am 42 and yes I am a little afraid to start use the reti..... I was using Exuviance age day repair until I watched a video that mentioned something like has a reti ingredients and how can be advised to use for day.. So I stopped using, and now you mention it that is only for night use. I will check your website and purchase something for my mother's day treat.
Thank you so much! This video was so helpful ❤️💯
Thanks for the videos Dr. Sam.
Amazing. Just on time.. I’m gonna start Tret this week. Fingers crossed 🤞😬 thank you for your information
❤️
Loved this video so helpful! I’d love to see how you apply to the neck once safe to do so :) thank you x
Great video with useful tips. I’ve been using Retin-A once a week for 5 weeks, and still peeling pretty badly. I’m going to try the sandwich method to see if it helps. For ref: 43 yrs, dry skin
Since Im so afraid at start I only do moisturizer first and tretinoin. And twice a week but Im not so consistent and I dont see any irritation with it ❤ Really love this tips! So helpful ! Thank you 😊 thinking to level up to alternate days use 🙏
This was wonderful!! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
Did you really say "if you don' t mind to see my face without cosmetics"???? *WE SPECIALLY LOVE TO SEE YOUR BARE SKIN!!!* Nothing compares to an actual pro derm demonstrating an application in real time🙌🏻✨ It' s a beyond luxurious gift that people raised before the internet era never ever ever even dreamed in our life🤯😍
*THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH* 🙏🏻
🧛🏻♀️🖤
Thank you for your kind words ❤
@@DrSamBuntingHello. Could you please warn people about the damage retinol causes to eyes by destroying meibomian glands? Please watch the video by Eye School with Dr. D about: Is retinol safe for eyes
I use the 13 dot technique thanks to you ❤️ It works so well and I fond that I use less product that way ❤️
Thanks for this great information ❤❤
Very well demonstrated and these video series are life savers! Thank you Dr Sam Bunting for being the guardian angel of our skin :) would love to see you do an episode on full skin care routine ( age specific if that’s essential ) that we should maintain as it’s easy to get trampled over with numerous products on our face. Love and hugs! ❤️

Hello Dr. Sam, I love your videos especially the ones about rosacea! About the sandwich method: how long should I wait to apply retinol after the first layer of moisturizer?
Hi Dr Sam, my skin has never looked more beautiful since I started using your products. I’ve been a customer for over 2 years now I think! How can I level-up my nighttime routine? Is there any benefit to adding a stronger retinoid whilst still using the Flawless Nightly, or will this overdo it?
Thank you so much for this!
I've got the retinal uglies & this is so helpful. I knew this info from before but had forgotten about it when I started my retinol recently.
Fab demo Dr Sam... i finally understand why i wake up with irritated, sore neck most days... thx for explaining it. Also i wrongly thought because i have lots of acne breakout on my cheeks, i was putting a little extra on there even after doing the 13dots... day 3... skin is inflamed with more cystic acne... painful to touch... i’m not doing that ever again. Thank you 👍👍
Love this video!
Good video De. Sam. Why add the moisturizer on top of retinoids?
Thank you for this detailed video Dr. Sam! I was wondering if you can explain why is it not good to use retinol with BR P50? Recently I started using P50W and got La Roche Posay Redeemic R face and eye cream but then I read they should not be combined.
You’re doing God’s work here, Dr. Sam! Thank you! 🙏
So kind! Thank you for watching ❤️
Thank you so much. I used to get uncomfortable peeling the next couple of days after using it. My skin sheds like a snake and only now I found out that moisturizing could solve this issue.
Thank you
Great info Dr. Sam. I'm in tretenoin 0.025,% for a year, I only use max. twice a week due to I'm still experiencing skin peeling. Other than peeling, I don't have other skin irritations. Do you think I should increase the frequent use to build up the toleration? Thanks!
Thank you for the information because I’m
About to start Tretinoin.025
Thank you for this video. could you please do a video on how to apply AHA? thanks.
We did! It’s up if you just scroll down.
Dr Sam, can you help me how to use skin care routine for hyperpigmentation and step to use retinol too, thanks
Really helpful. Should have more likes
This is super helpful! I just started using the inkey list retinol. The first time was fine, a little dryness the next day but not too bad. Applied it again 3 days later and my face feels very itchy and irritated, especially around the eye area. I will be trying to buffering technique! Would you recommend stopping the use of salicylic acid while my skin is getting used to the retinol? I never use it in the same routine as the retinol, but I was using paula’s choice BHA 2% every day prior to starting retinol
Love your videos, they give great insight on different topics. Had a question, when using any retinoids on a part of the face why do Esthetician’s refuse to wax eyebrows or upper lip area? I stopped using retinoids due to the frequent experience of not being able to find an Esthetician who felt comfortable waxing my eyebrows or lip area after using a retinoid on the chin only. Any insight would be great , thanks.
It will peel the skin off.
A deep dive into hydroquinone would be good. Many thanks x
You can watch Dr Davin Lim. He has a video on that in his channel. But I would like to hear from Dr Sam as well.
What is it?
@@Portia620 isn’t it the med Trump tried to push for Covid
like tretinoin there is a ton of scientific data for the safety and efficacy of hydroquinone. It is safe and effective.
thank you Dr! hopefully you could have another demo for the neck application 😊 (esp for those people who are nervous about starting retinoids in the neck and chest area)
Hello! I started tretinoin 0.025% exactly six weeks ago, on my face and neck. On my neck I apply it over Cerave moisturizing cream, and every 10 nights. It's purging, but not too badly. I thought about applying it every week after the 6-week mark, but I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Slowly but surely. I hope this helps! 💖
2 to 3 times a week, I've been buffering my neck skin (insisting on the horizontal neck lines) and mixing my Tretinoin 0.05% with a basic, neutral, rich moisturizer (been using The Ordinary's NMF). I mix it on the back of my hand: 1 pea size amount of Tret + 1 pea size amount of moisturizer. This gives you a more gentle retinization, as Tret is absorbed more slowly by the skin.
After using it on my face, I apply whatever is left on my fingertips to my neck. I started just below the jawline every other day and have now been applying to my neck sides and will slowly move towards the central area (only 2 to 3 times a week on the neck for now).
I do my PM routine around 1.5 - 2 hours before going to bed to prevent Tret transfer. So far, so good 🙏
PS - By the way, I always leave a little bit of the Tret+moisturizer mix on the back of my hand and then rub it against the other one. Hands also need some love 😉😘
@@catarinaf3261 that sounds like a good plan. I also do my nighttime routine around two hours before bed.
@@kendallstark4302 Awesome! I've also started Tret quite recently (around 2 months ago). Wishing you a great tret journey 😘
hi Dr ,is it neccessary to take a brake from summer use ? I use sunscreen all the time .Lots of love, thanks for everything
please could you recommend products? its a nightmare getting the right product especially Retinol . thank you for all the information
I have wrinkles under my eyes and I was told to apply retinoid. Should I do it? Great video!
I have very sensitive skin with lipstick, either dermatitis or my face swells. I have used tretinoin for 10 weeks without any reaction, it is brilliant for hormonal spots.
Thank you dr Sam! I love you channel! I have dry and extremely allergic skin, and I’m using retinal for 2 years and about to graduate to tretinoin. Every moisturizer I have ever tried applying on my upper lid made the skin there to swell up and react. (even plain Vaseline). Do you have a tip for me how to protect the eye area?
Just ordered my first Tretinoin tube the other day! Super excited to start, but nervous at same time!
Just do your homework with good advice. I’ve not had any problems!
Update
Such a wonderful video. Is it okay to use a retinal that is already combined with a moisturiser such as Olay Rapid Wrinkle Repair or Neutrogena Regenerist?
great video
Thank you for the demo, I’ll try the 13-dot technique tonight. I have been prescribed epiduo for my acne. Can I still apply it on the entire face (minus the areas around orifices), or will the benzoyl peroxide be too much?
Thank you! I am 53 and have extremely fair, sensitive skin. I have been avoiding tretinoin for years, and finally bit the bullet. Your video helped tremendously in giving me the confidence to know that I could use the product properly and safely, in spite of my finicky skin. As always, your thorough and non-judgmental advice is just what I need.
Can I ask what strength you started with?
@@nadines7175 Sure! It's a very low dose from Curology; 0.003% tretinoin, 2% azelaic acid, 4% niacinamide. I am now applying it nightly, using Dr. Sam's advice. So far, so good.
@@anakreyszig303 Thank you!
I have pale thin and sensitive skin. No problems! Been more than a year now. I just listened to the best advice and that’s what made it all go well.
for anti ageing effects you need strength at least 0.02%
Hi Dr Sam, I’m about to start using a retinoid so perfect timing. Can you use retinoids on your hands to reduce age spots? Some people say ‘yes, skin is skin’ but hearing you say to be cautious on the neck make me wonder if the same applies to hands? Thanks for the videos, such great straightforward advice. 😁
Do you mind me asking about how is it going? did you purge ?
Thank you very much!!
I plan on starting retinol in October, so this recap of tips is useful 👍🏻 thanks
But I have a question: is there any major difference between retinol products marketed for acne or for anti-aging?
Non dermatologist opinion here with no scientific evidence 🤣 but my thought is that, in general, retinol is retinol (varying of course by % in the product). And retinol is both good for acne, fine lines and pigmentation. I imagine that it's the delivery system that is geared more toward acne or anti aging 🤔
Great tips ! Although top lip is exactly an area I have been targeting for use with tretinoin as it works so well for smokers lines . I buffer first with moisturiser then apply . Has worked really well so far
Do you have less lines on the upper lip? do you use retinol or tetrinoin?
Thanks doctor really appreciate it....
Could you go more into the difference between trazarotene and tretinoin. I have been prescribed both, I have acne but am also approaching 40. Both have a good impact on my skin, but I think the trazarotene is sometimes better with helping acne but is tretinoin better for wrinkles? I had one derm tell me to use both as they work slightly differently on the skin.
It would be amazing if we can get info on how to use azelaic acid. What % to start with and also how to apply it. Can it be used with retinoids. Do we use it AM or PM. Like you did with this video.
I have rosacea and acne. Never had it before but got it during pregnancy and 18 months after delivery I still have issues. so it would be useful to know if that’s something for me.
Thank you so much 😊
🙌🏼🙌🏼12 years using retin a and loving it! Thank you For all the information! 😀
Wonderful! ❤️
Can you use it for that long non stop??
@@Kat-lh9tv yes, you can I usually take the weekends off and use something else and then Mondays back to it!! And always sunscreen 🧴
I started using retin a for acne and my dermatologist said to keep using 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Have been using Tretinoin for a year now with amazing results, my skin was that oily you could cook an egg on my face, have never got any drying at all form the cream. Never had any issue with Tretinoin. I now use on neck and around nose and my skin is looking so much better than what it was before.
Wow! Nice hearing from you. Ive got an oily face too.
This is really encouraging.
I have extremely oily skin, so this sounds good👌 hopefully ill have same smooth journey, starting today
Thank you ❤️ help a lot.. tonight I'm starting retino,l first time.😊
Amazing! How is it going so far with retinol? ❤
Thank you for the helpful info. If using the “sandwich” method & nightly serums such as peptides, would that be applied after the first moisturizing layer and before tretinoin?
I’m actually wondering this too as I use other serums at night

This is so lovely!
Thank you so much! Lovely and kind words I really needed this!😭
Take care lovely your words really lifted me up also xxx ❤️
Hi Dr sam can I use retinol over raised moles thank-you or just avoid that area xxx
Excellent thank you.
Very informative! What moisturizer do you recommend?
You can try Flawless Mosituriser or Flawless Mosituriser Light ❤️
Lovely video thank you. So when your opinion retanoid retinoid, retin-a physically mixed together, For example stirred together in the Palm of your hand before application, dilutes the effectiveness activeness of the RetinA?
I don’t use them but my kids do for acne!!! I’m the one that needs them!!! I heard 3 times a week and use moisturizes. The 4 x a week so love slowly and then never stop and if you do then turn to go back to peeling and redness phase . Now wanting to start using them.
It's amazing, as well as indicative, to which extent dermatological recommendations differ in terms of European ones and the American. Not saying this because I am from Europe, but given the research I delved into, both with my dermatologist and by watching numerous RUclips presentations and "connecting the dots". ALWAYS follow recommendations from European ones. They are, to cut the long story short, healthier and taking health much more into consideration than the Americans'. Thank you dr Sam for bearing in mind all of our health issues, our fears and insecurities.
Life is always beautiful when you have good health, for almost 4 years I was diagnosed with HPV, and I was lonely and sad, luckily for me I was addressed to a kind and great herbal doctor who helped me to restore my health back to me, he sent me the herbs that cured my HPV, completely and the test results proves I'm now negative of the virus , all thanks to you Dr.Ani John for the cure remedy for restoring my health, I will always be grateful to you for your kind gestures..
Thank you!
Hello Dr. Sam, im working on a night shift, would you recommend still using it a night or in the morning when I go to bed? Thank you so much!
You have the most beautiful skin.
I have a vacation coming up at the end of July. Am I supposed to stop using Retinol (in my case Trifarotene) before? And if so, when? Thank you so much!
Do you suggest to use retinol in alternate nights while using hpr (granactive retinoid)?
Really helpful Dr Sam. As someone with esp sensitive skin I started using Nightly Serum every 7 days for over a month and then every 3-4 days. The mistake I then made was to increase the amount rather than the frequency and recently had very sensitised skin. It put me off using and I haven't used the Nightly since! This has inspired me to try again. One thing I am not sure about though is how to sleep properly so the serum doesn't end up moving on the face. Don't laugh, but I actually try and sleep on my back for most of the night to avoid any serum moving onto parts of my face I don't want. Consequently I don't always sleep very well! At what point in the sleeping cycle is it safe to sleep on your side without fear of serum movement? The other thing I think you could have mentioned is protecting lips further by using your lip balm or even vaseline over the lips to act as strong barriers to the serum accidentally migrating? Many thanks for this video :)
Try to use your serum as early as possible in the evening. At least 2 hrs before bedtime but preferably longer if possible so the serum can do its work efficiently.
Would love to know more in what products to avoid and not mix whilst using tretinoin and when to use face oils in the routine?🤔
Great info Dr Sam, thank you. It scares me as well, I do not use because I have extremely dry and rosacea skin, I just can't.
I have tried on and off but don’t now it just dried my skin too much and caused skin damage I gone back to using products that are pure
Pro trick : watch movies on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Brendan Ty yea, have been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :)
But you use derma roller. The situation can’t be so bad.
Stay away from Flixzone it's a scam.
Dr., how about if I love toners and serum (no active ingredients... just has things like mugwort, rice toners, things like that...), would that be a problem if I apply those at night prior to the moisturizer googles?
Hi Doc Sam. Do I still have to be very careful when I'm starting with the weakest concentration like Retinyl palmitate (like Eucerin Q10 anti-wrinkle + pro-retinol night cream)?
Dear Dr Sam I am confused, are Granative Retinoids Stronger than Retinol and Retinal!? 🤔🤔🤔💙🙏🏻🕊🌞 Thank you so much.
Thank you 💙
Can I use copper and other peptides with retinoids? I read conflicting things on the internet, one person says we can use these ingredients together, the other one says the opposite. I would also like to know if we can combine copper peptides with azelaic acid. Thanks for the wonderful video!!! I love your channel
I am curious about that too 😉
Do we need any drying time between layers or just the way you do it in your video? Thanks :-)
What about Trifaroten/ Aklief? Is it supposed to be used the same way?☺️ since it wasn‘t in your list at the beginning
