speaking as a former attractions attendant for disney, god we wished there would be downtimes, especially if your attraction was a busy one(like mine, I was opening team for MMRR in Hollywood Studios).
Everytime I went to the "Tower" Position (AKA watching the cameras to make sure everyone is good and keep an eye for anything in the ride path) I PRAYED TO THE GODS for a down time cause
      1) Evacs are fun af
      2) Downtime was great, until you were outside dealing with guests but i digress
      3) if you're preshow at least at MMRR you get the coldest rooms possible for your down time due to the nitrogen gas they use for the smoke!

Funny story: I recognize everyone in the Pirates video so I believe that may have been a day I was working. I was in Adventureland Custodial and the ride was down for at least half of the day. I stopped to say hi to the Pirates crew and they had a cardboard boat out front with a script book to give me “Pirates Abridged”. IT WAS HILARIOUS! All of them came together to deliver the best performance of their lives from some of them meowing like cats to them holding a tape dispenser like the keys at the end to them debating who would play Jack or the barrel he was hiding in to them asking me to “remain seated”. It was the greatest experience I’ve EVER had at Disney World and I’m sad I was working and couldn’t record it lol.

I had an in show exit when I was on splash mountain at Disney World. At this point, I was a kid and my parents were waiting outside because they didn’t like to get wet. Right as I was going up the lift hill, everything stopped except the sound, so all the animatronics were staring at me creepily. by then I was scarred out of my mind, especially when I heard the people a few logs in front of me scream (they were teetering on the edge). In the end I got down safely and went through a door that was blended into the wall and got to see the pumps and stuff. That was quite the experience!

Got stuck on Splash Mountain years ago, pre-cellphone cameras unfortunately (I am old yes). We stopped at least twice with lights on, but I guess they had to keep moving logs to evacuate some areas? Anyway we eventually ended up stuck at the top of the drop. A very sweet but very apologetic cast member informed us that they couldn't quite reach us to get out, but they could give us a "little nudge" down to her friends at the bottom to help us out that way. Most terrifying moment of my young life at that point lol

I remember my first trip to Hollywood Studios at Disney World, I rode the Rock and Roller coaster, and at the very end, we just saw a white screen. After a minute, the light went off. Everyone was a bit freaked out, but after about a minute, they said over the speaker “we’re facing a few technical difficulties”, but after about 5 minutes, they basically said “alright, we’re good”. Everyone was excited for a possible in show exit (even if it was at the end), but I was just like “is this part of the ride…?” 😂

For those who are curious about how often rides stop themselves, I’d say it really depends on the ride! It depends on the age of the ride and the amount of maintenance it receives.
As a ride operator I can tell you that Flight of the Hippogriff at Universal Orlando does have somewhat of a tendency to stop itself, although in most cases an evacuation isn’t necessary. Rides like Forbidden Journey and Hagrid’s Motorbikes usually don’t end up stopping themselves very frequently (at least, not that I know of.)
TL;DR, Rides are complicated! Us ride operators do a lot to make sure everything runs smoothly, but sometimes it’s completely out of our hands.

When I went to Disneyland Paris for the 2nd time, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride broke down in front of the pirate on the bridge that “throws bombs” and I thought that was part of the experience when it came on over the speaker. When we were escorted out, my dad almost knocked over the woman holding the boat so we could get out 😂!

10:03 Often. All rides, but especially roller coasters are overengineered to the point where a falling leaf obstructing a light beam could trigger the ride to go into complete motion stop. For BTM, chances are the trains weren't getting sent out of the station fast enough, or a sensor somewhere felt something it didn't like.

A couple weeks ago me and my family of 5 went to Disney land and got stuck on Grizzly River Run. The worst part was, we got stuck at the top of the hill, so you never knew if something was gonna malfunction and just send us flying down. We were stuck on the top of the ride for 2 hours waiting for two other crew members to drain the water and let us off. We ended up getting a BTS tour of the inside and a fast pass! We were also going to go on the Peter Pan ride, but a girl passed out right in front of us, we also got a fast pass for that.

I nearly got a breakdown experience on Rise of the Resistance in Disney's Hollywood Studios when I was over there in March. We were literally almost about to go on the transport, when a cast member told us that the ride was down. Thankfully, the cast members gave us FastPasses to ride the ride once it was back up again, and the ride was AMAZING!

I watched a couple minutes of people getting off two trains at the launch of Incredicoaster this past week. I would’ve filmed it but knew I wasn’t going to be there long. Also, in regards to the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster in Florida, does Walt Disneyworld still have Duffy, the Disney Bear?

    • @captainseg

To the extent of my knowledge, Duffy has been discontinued in Disney World. Disneyland Paris however still has the lovable bear.

For Big Thunder Mountain, if your train suddenly stops anywhere other than a lift hill, expect an in-show exit, because all the break runs that the system can stop the train at have slight inclines so the ride has to be reset by hand using winches to pull the train up

I didn’t record it and it wasn’t a breakdown, but I went to Disney a week ago and legit saw the coolest thing on Big Thunder Mountain. So, it was the Halloween after-hours ticket and we rode Big Thunder Mountain. Once, we came out of the darkness to see the fireworks going off. We got it at the perfect time that the whole ride the fireworks went off.
