I have so many great memories with this game. At the time, the only place that I knew it was available was Chuck E. Cheese, and the only way for me to get there was to be part of a friend or classmates birthday party. Needless to say, I always tried really hard (and was often successfully able) to convince them to have their birthday party there, just so I could play some more. And for those that are unfamiliar with Chuck E. Cheese, you're in for a wild ride. There's a dude in a giant rat costume. Overpriced and bad pizza is served. There's some mechanical puppet shows and they're kind of terrifying. It has a huge arcade and a playpen riddled with every possible substance that a child could deliver. If you went in the ballpit as a child, you're likely immune to the corona virus and will live forever. What a place.
The old school cartoon where Wolverine who is Canadian has an Australian accent then then five years later an actor who is Australian plays Wolverine who is a Canadian.
Wonderful sentiment but these games aren't really what can be called side-scrollers. That would be Bad Dudes, Shinobi, Altered Beast or Kung Fu Master. THOSE are side-scrollers, or action games. Turtles, X-men, Double Dragon, Golden Axe and the like are all BEAT'EM-UPS.
Whomever needs to get the license to this game (KONAMI?) needs to do so and do it ASAP, so that these gems, including The Simpsons Arcade can be made playable on the Nintendo Switch!!
2:10 Actually, that's Steve Ditko. Co-creator of Spider-Man with Stan Lee. As well as the creator of the second Blue Beetle, (Ted Cord) and The Question.
Definitely one of the greatest X-Men games ever I remember playing this game with my cousins when I was a kid this X-Men arcade game was just fantastic to play especially with four to six players now that was just freaking phenomenal.
One of the few arcade games I ever saw the ending to on the actual arcade machine. It took a lot of quarters for me to get through, but it was a heck of a fun game to play. Amazing how the game still holds up.
Agree. Saturn even had a six players adaptator that would have allowed a full arcade experience. I guess that it was due to Capcom owning the X-Men rights at that time, but it's all right, they made Children of the Atom and it led Marvel Superheroes and the Marvel VS Capcom series.
@@Hektols I agree some what. I think Sega had X-Men/Spiderman home rights for a time and then I believe Acclaim got Spiderman and possibly Wolverine (Adamantium Rage?). Capcom had X-Men and Marvel SNES games. I'm glad that it seems WB (DC) and Marvel are getting more control of their properties with regards to current videogames. However, I wish their was a better effort to have collections of these comic book games.
Anyone who frequented arcades when this game was at the height of its popularity will forever remember this timeless classic. Short, simple, frantic, and fun. Arcade perfection.
The double screen six player cabinet is the only one I've ever seen and played on. A true gem in my childhood. I sacrificed so many quarters to this beast.
There used to be an urban legend going around the Internet back in the day that suggested that the producers of the show accidentally blew their entire 13 episode budget on one episode. I found this believable back then because that one episode looked miles better than anything else the studio had produced lol
Wow perfect timing. Right now,Im working on a custom figure of Cyclops, in the outfit from this game. This is exactly the kind of content I want to watch at the moment.
Don't know if it was mentioned previously in the comments, but this game was in fact released on Xbox 360 and PS3, I still have the download license on my 360. If I remember though I think the PS3 version could allow up to 6 players due to 360 only having a limit of 4 controllers. Something I'd have to recheck by hooking it up again.
This cabinet compared to TMNT & The Simpsons was the only one that demanded at least one play session whenever and wherever it was encountered. We mostly had the four player version, but on occasion we would run into the six player one for some made fun.
If this game was based on the 1992 animated series: Cyclops, Storm and Wolverine would wear their costumes from the show. Colossus, Nightcrawler and Dazzler would be replaced by Beast, Gambit and Rogue. Kitty Pryde would be replaced by Jubilee. Sabertooth and Omega Red would be among the bosses.
Their arcade debut had a number of different configurations but its largest one allowed six players to co-0p through the adventure together on a giant cabinet equipped with a double monitor setup. One monitor was hidden below inside the cabinet and reflected up to create a widescreen effect allowing all six players to see what was going on. It was similar to the same technique used by Taito in '86, ’87, '89, and '92 using a three monitor setup for their Darius, Sagaia, The Ninja Warriors, and Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode 3 to create a triple widescreen (but which only had 2-player co-op) and Tecmo's Tecmo Bowl in '87. It was a far cry from Galaxian 3’s 28-player theater but small enough to fit into a local arcade with room to spare. The original arcade cabinet supported up to 4-players and used the exact same hardware hugely popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and its sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Crime Fighters, Punk Shot, The Simpsons, Vendetta, Sunset Riders, and G.I. Joe.
If Arcade 1up Ever Does an Arcade Home Cabinet for the X-Men. Then it Has to be 4 Player like the TMNT Arcade Machine Cabinet. 6 Player Would be Far too big.
A six player game that me my three brothers one of my cousin and childhood friend could all play together. I remember everyone fighting to be Wolverine and Nightcrawler. I was always Storm.
I have a Pandora's box 4+. Honestly I have played all beat em ups over last 2 years. Yet I do find myself playing so many games you keep reviewing like Sat night slam, to sf2 123+# turbo champion hyper rainbow edition, actually yeah do a SF2 Rainbow edition M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6 & M7 versions. Now that would be great
I have the most nostalgic connection with my dad driving me to the next town over to play this arcade game with me. That Nightcrawler version, I loved. From the 90s animated series.
I remember finishing it with my cousin, uncle and brother @ Future Kids Arcade located in the basement of khaligiyah Tower @ kuwait city. It was the 4 player version. Cheers!
The "6 playable characters" at a time thing is so genius. You're much less likely to get off the cabinet after a game over if your 5 friends are still playing. Birthday party? You can all either split off onto different games, watch and take turns, or just play X-Men. The presentation alone encouraged me to just not stop hitting continue, I don't know what it was, but X Men was one of the few games I was ok with dumping all my quarters into.
It's one of the rare games i managed to end in arcade when I was a teen(not counting the various times I won on emulator). I was in an arcade with a friend of mine and some guys were playing the game. We didn't want to disturb but at some point we were like "ok let's get in". The guys were ok to play with us and we ended up playing the damn game with my friend along with 4 strangers. We did lost some tokens but i had a blast teaming up with some dudes to kick Magneto's ass. In the end, everyone was like "cool" and we all went on our separate ways, without asking for our names or whatever. It was just six guys playing an X-Men game, wining and going home. Still one of my best gaming memories to this day
There three things I remember about this game. First thing I remember is playing this monster size arcade machine at the local bowling alley, next one is there is a two player version at a skiing place that I went to for a school field trip as well place had a old Fun House pinball machine which is one of my favorite pinball games, and the last part is if not the best part is it only cost one quarter to play where if you die in the middle it cost a quarter to continue playing unlike most arcade games I played in the 90's that cost way over 50 cents. I'm very sure you wouldn't be disappointed with the game unless you forgot pack few extra quarters.
Back when I was a kid, I remember going to the pac-man arcade in Pasadena all the time back in the early 90s and playing the shit out of this game (as well as several other games) with my brothers.
"Welcome to DIE!" I remember playing the 6 player multi-screen version at the Mall as a kid, epic. Yes, Malls and arcades...👀 The irony...Wolverine in "Pryde of the X-Men" was Australian.
I loved this game. I would sit there and play this game until I was out of quarters. Most days I only had 2.00 in change to play this. All together I had to spent at least 7-10K on this game. NO DOUBT. I loved it. I fell asleep next to this game at the arcade. I used to have to use a booster stand to see the screen it lol. That is how big X-men was. Huge man. Everyone loved it. We had the toys. We had the cars. We had the clothes and wallets.... man it's priceless to go back to experience it again.
I could be wrong, but I think I remember someone putting out a somewhat similar side-scrolling beat-em-up for the GBA that might have re-used scaled-down assets from this game. I remember having and playing what I'm referring to b/c the graphics and play style reminded me SO MUCH of *this* game.
This one hits close to the heart as over my years I've played the 2,4 and 6 player versions of this game. Always a fond memory and always preferred Wolverine
I played the crap out of this game back in the day. It kept me coming to the arcade when my local arcade got rid of the TMNT game (which irked me endlessly). Nightcrawler and Dazzler were my go-to characters. It was pretty fun going solo, but it was endlessly awesome when other players were in on it too. I also liked that, after the credits, it looped back to the beginning and kept going so that it didn't feel like that one more coin was wasted just to finish off Magneto. There was one time I was playing as Nightcrawler and all other five characters were taken by other players. The dude playing Storm kept laughing his ass off every time I had Nightcrawler jumping on fallen enemies. It never failed. Every single time Nightcrawler hit downed enemies... raucous laughter from my immediate right. It never seemed to get old for him, either. By the final stage, he would still crack up at that every bit as much as he had in stage one. It was crazy. Even back then I got why there was never a home port of the six-player version, but since they'd done a four-player version as well, I thought they could have at least tried a home multi-player version on the SNES using the SNES Multitap (I also wished they'd done this for Battletoads Arcade, another favorite of mine). Sure, it wouldn't have been exactly like the arcade game, but it would have been something. After all, Turtles In Time made a good SNES game. (And speaking of the Multitap... but, what's the use?) Anyway. It was an incredibly fun game, especially with other people.
I used to go to the arcade in our mall when I was like...5 I think and I would pump all of my quarters into this game. Played it every week for probably 2 years straight.
X Men is heavily influenced by the segregation of the Afro Americans in the south. Professor X is based on MLK and Magneto is based on Malcom X in terms of their political views. Stan lee admitted this in one of his later interviews
The retconing of History by the SJW Woke Mob is really annoying now/ Stan Lee admitted he want to have Teenage Who felt like outcast. Go back to very old Stan Lee videos. The MLK Malcolm X dynamic was never apart of it, until way later. All too add some weight to the story line. Now the troupe is over played & tiresome. This is coming from a person of color too. SJW's love re writing history/
I remember this game. You could beat it on one credit (no continues), but you had to know how to deal with some of the cheap traps in that game and the boss patterns. I think Storm was the easiest to use to 1 credit it. Beat it several times with her. TMNT1 had similar patterns and I was able to beat that one too. Simpsons was hard, I could make it to the last boss but coudn't beat him. Turtles in Time was impossible due to the "Stealth nerfs" which would kill solo players who took more than 5 minutes and 9 seconds to pass a level (this could be avoided until the Pirate ship map, when even if you used a stopwatch to time the "kill bomb", there was just not enough time to react because the level floor was closer to the top of the screen.
Back in the early 90s, I was 10 or so and there was an arcade very near where I was living. It took me a while to really aknowledge that big Xmen machine and back then I was thinking that Wolverine's name is XMEN !! I was playing the snes game Spiderman Xmen : arcade revenge and it was then that I became more and more interested about the characters names and details , stuff like SCOTT SUMMERS aka CYCLOPS . Then I went back to the arcade with that info in mind and the game felt great !! It was still a hard game to finish and I would only get past lvl1 or lvl2. At one point my mom brought me to the arcade and she watched me play some. Good memories !!
"X-MEN, WELCOME... TO DIE!" Lmao I LOVED this game. They had the six player version at the arcade by my grandparents house in the second half of the 90s. The only problem was the Storm controls had a broken attack button, so she could only jump and use her special. But Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus... and Dazzler lol all worked. And every time me and the other kids in their neighborhood went there, I always tried to get them to join me to play this absolute masterpiece. Yes, the dialog was nonsense. But the gameplay was so dope.
I loved that game and still do, there is a local Barcade that has it. I also bought it for the iPhone some years ago, unfortunately it hasn't received updates for the newer OS's. I didn't know it was once on PSN, I hope it still is.
Truly a classic , I used to play 6 player in my home town, it's a shame it never had a port for Snes or Sega The music in this game was amazing, Dance with a Crocodile is a work of genius
Konami really knew how to make fantastic and addictive Arcade games with little to work with. ( Xmen had to work with a failed Xmen pilot and even the Simpsons had only the 1st 2 seasons worth of material). Yet, made some truly epic and memorable gameplay that still made us fans clammer with our quaters to play more!!!!
I used to play this at the arcade at circus circus in Las Vegas when I was a kid. So fun. Dropped some serious coin on this game..... Sadly I never beat it 😭

That’s enough X Chicken
You forgot that you may actually BE a mutant after emerging from the giant Petri dish that is the ball pit 😂
Thanks grandma, tell me another story please
YES!!! The soundtrack to this game was amazing!
This and Turtles are the gold standard in side scrollers. If you've never played this on the 6-player cabinet, you have never lived.
Fun times. A 6 six player game that could accommodate me my three brothers my cousin and childhood friend.

The closest to home release was back on PS3.
They allowed the Downloads of both the X-Men and Simpsons
LJN owned the console license for Xmen
They owned the exclusive rights for the consoles for a certain period of time. Plus given Ack-Lame track record they would have been terrible ports.

They should bring this game on next gen and remastered with xmen original voice cast
It's awesome game 🎮. They released it on PS5. Xbox series consoles.
Great review brings me bac😹
I love this game!
Can't wait to play this on my new RG 350
I used to play this game as a kid. When I was eleven, I managed to beat the game on one quarter using Nightcrawler.
"X-MEN, WELCOME... TO DIE!"
Lmao I LOVED this game.
My late wonderful Dad as a kid in the 60's and early 70's had Issue #1 X-Men and Issue #1 Fantastic Four
'X-MEN WELCOME TO DIIIIIE''
much love Magneto and beautiful X-Gene people
This was my favorite arcade game as a kid, also how I met my future wife. keep up the great work TOP HAT!!!!
Well done. Need this game on the next wave of modern consoles
I loved that game and still do, there is a local Barcade that has it. I also bought it for the iPhone some years ago, unfortunately it hasn't received updates for the newer OS's. I didn't know it was once on PSN, I hope it still is.
Truly a classic , I used to play 6 player in my home town, it's a shame it never had a port for Snes or Sega
The music in this game was amazing, Dance with a Crocodile is a work of genius
THIS GAME IS AWSOME
Konami really knew how to make fantastic and addictive Arcade games with little to work with. ( Xmen had to work with a failed Xmen pilot and even the Simpsons had only the 1st 2 seasons worth of material). Yet, made some truly epic and memorable gameplay that still made us fans clammer with our quaters to play more!!!!
I used to play this at the arcade at circus circus in Las Vegas when I was a kid. So fun. Dropped some serious coin on this game..... Sadly I never beat it 😭
I love this arcade game. They need to re release this back on the major game platforms.
0:23 finally realized it at 3:18 is that MAME? Players 1-4 assigned the same buttons? Did I do this to my game too? Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Never knew about this game. Thank for this.
Whomever needs to get the license to this game (KONAMI?) needs to do so and do it ASAP, so that these gems, including The Simpsons Arcade can be made playable on the Nintendo Switch!!
The only problem with it is that you can't buy it now unless you illegally download it or buy a 500$ arcade .
