  • Please watch my next video on my three rucksacks so you can see the upgrades I did to it after making this video.
When I said I do not recommend this pack, I was referring to those who are looking for any type of tactical style pack. I would recommend this to anyone who wants an external frame pack or who wants to experiment with the ALICE frame. Regardless how you carry your tactical gear, you’ll need to clip the hip belt away from you. Otherwise the hip bet will get in the way of your gear, but the frame will still help in dealing with heavy loads. If you are able to use a 1606 frame and it works for you, I’d like to hear how you like it.
The pack overall weights roughly 8lbs
Original cost for the pack was $180
Frame was around $58. The frame also came with new shoulder straps and hip pad,
    Hip pad around $80
All the molle pouches around $120

I uncrossed the straps as well. It’s a solid pack with potential for greatness. I dig the old school bucket design and look. I currently own two, and have given away a few.

Great video! I appreciate the thoughtful and detailed description and analysis. Made me consider things I hadn't thought off. There are gear repairers who can modify those poorly designed straps, etc. Well done, thanks for the education!

You should check out the Raptor Tactical Palice plastic frame and Tactical Tailor super belt and straps. Would make it more comfortable and give it some flex.

Thanks for the info! Since making this video ive added a tactical taylor Malice frame... which made it heavier but more solid. been cautious about plastic frames like the 1606 since they can crack loosing structural strength. Also didn't want to get new straps and hip pads. The one you suggested seems to be a good alternative. Perhaps I'll check it out one day

See, the first two criticisms you have of it, are the reason I love it. The criss cross was made to alleviate the first issue you had with it. When you tighten a blanket to the top of the pack, there's more tension keeping it in place when its in the criss cross formation, as opposed to the standard vertical position. And if that didn't do enough of a job keeping it in place, you could just re-weave the straps over the first two panels of molle, and then UNDER the third panel, creating that barrier that you want.
Also, I LOVE the fact that the straps are as long as they are because it provides much more utility when it comes to attaching said blanket or jacket. They perfected the alice pack imo.
They only issues I agree with, is the limited attachment space on the bottom, and the pockets on the inside. Personally, I'd rather they just get rid of the pockets altogether, but thats because I usually throw everything inside a waterproof liner anyway, rendering them useless. I usually keep my water in one of the pockets.
The hidden woodsman made a similar updated alice/tropical ruck if you're interested. I would check that out. I'd be curious to get your opinion on it

For some reason I just don’t see it that way when it comes to the straps. I didn’t see/read anywhere how the X creates more tension. If it works for you than at least you didn’t have to rework the straps like I did.
I checked out that Hidden woodsman ruck you suggested. I like it. For the main compartment, the buckles are in the spot as I would want them. Since it’s made of 500 denier nylon and not 1000 denier it would be lighter too. I think it would be a good contender for the Spec ops.

The OG Alice rucks had the female buckles on the bottom for a reason. When not full, tightening from the bottom actually brings the load into the frame putting the center of gravity where it needs to be. And one gets more strap up top where it can be tucked away as opposed to dangling all over. Also, if one doesn't modify with Fastex buckles, one can run the straps through the tunnels of a butt pack. Tie the top with some 550 and you've got a humongous top pouch that's easily removed and remounted. Spec Ops pioneered the concept of modularity between Alice and PALS gear. Doubt they'll ever change anything.

The internal "hydration" pocket us for putting an internal frame in. If you buy it from their website it currently comes with the internal frame.

Thanks for the info. When I purchased it I don't think the internal frame was available at the time, other wise I would have bought it. After checked it out, I can see how it will help. The only issue I can see with it is that the pack will still lay flat against your back with no air ventilation. Perhaps if you're wearing a plate carrier or some other gear it wouldn't matter.

Well I agree with most of your assessment and thx for the video. But there is more things that should be add to your list. The through tunnels behind the outside pockets, Velcro on top of the pocket lids, molle acrossed the bottom of the pack, a zippered
pocket sewn under the lid, and rows of molle sewn just above the 3 outside pockets.

Another thing its missing is the pass thru areas behind the three external pockets.

You can "move" the position of the buckles higher with an extra pair and accompanying short straps. Like a fat boy clip on the old pistol belts.

I’ll stick with my Alice Pack. Molle pack waist belt and straps. Molle Sustainment pouches on the sides attached to the Alice loops. High quality military Side release buckles used to secure the top flap straps. Woodland camo isn’t very discreet, so the coyote color is nice, and I do like the molle on the top flap, but not enough to throw any coin at this.

Glad you made an ALICE work for you. Yeah after a year of posting this vid my opinion hasn't changed. I did upgrade the straps and frame though. Tactical Taylor makes good stuff

Great 2 videos on packs and this one, specifically. I fall into the same boat... i just want this but what would be an 8/10, 9/10, 10/10 in your view? I like the idea of replacing parts as-needed; the cordura material, the newness of a timeless pack (7/10 for 50 yrs may make it a 9/10); I like this one because it seems like you can underpack and it use it without a frame?! I've been using a Goruck GR2 36L. I feel I want a wider-across-the-back pack, with more room (nothing over 45L), something I could use in city, camping at times, and apocalypse. LOL
What are your thoughts? I hate the look of ospreys and "hiking" packs, nothing with crazy molle grids on the front and ideally NO camo ... I like that timeless, old, rugged vibe.

So if you're looking for a hiking pack I'd say the Gregory stout 35. In my view I can do an all day hike in any condition with that pack. A civilian brand like what you'll find at an REI store will be more comfortable and lighter weight than a tactical style pack. If you're looking to put a bunch of heavy items like binoculars, spotting scope/tripod, folding metal shovel etc then go with a tactical pack. I'd say if you go with the tactical approach, get all your items together first then research what size pack would be best for you. In the end of the day I don't have a favorite 10/10 pack. I would say the 5.11 Rush 12 I have with the modifications I've done is my favorite. All my other packs combined don't come close to the amount of miles and usage compared to how I've used the Rush 12.

@@thescharfchannel appreciate that input. I definitely was looking at the 5.11 packs. I actually found a good deal on a Granite Tactical Gear Chief Patrol Pack.

I've got SpecOps gear thats 30 years old. Just got off their site. They haven't changed anything. Except for dropping the S.O.P. buttpack instead of adding PALS webbing. And the site has a lot less items. I can't believe paying that much for what amounts to an Alice medium. SpecOps must have a doozie of a contract with the alphabet boys.

The only item I have from them is this pack. I've had this for over six hears and can't believe how much they've jumped in price. I thought $180 was a lot then compared to $240 now
