      Genuine 'carbon fiber' contains nano materials to make it stronger /still lightweight. Also 'hook and loop' is the technical term, whereas 'velcro' is a brand name. Like tissue vs 'kleenex'.

    Long story short, not having a medium ruck in JRTC made my life a lot harder than it had to be. When i finally got issued one, i loved it so much that i refused to return it to CIF. No regrets.

    Add the side pouches from the large ruck. It adds a lot of space to an already good system. Just watch the zippers because they can slip behind the pouches. I was a medic and the extra space saved me from having to deal with an aid bag on shorter ops.

    I first saw the MOLLE in 1999. Schofield Barracks. A platoon got to test it out. Then, in 2002, at Fort Drum we had a MOLLE ruck we tested as well. The sleeping compartment was actually a separate piece, then we got another MOLLE the ruck with the sleeping compartment attached which we used in Iraq. It was a better version. This was 2005-06. 🤘🇺🇸

    Obviously there was a sergeant major on the committee that designed the ruck. “But if we put mesh pouches on there Joe’s will have gloves and socks and Hooah bars and all kinds of non uniformity stuff hanging out of there!”

    • @Stoney3K
      @Stoney3K 2 года назад +9

      And then every random Joe just weaves a few feet of shock cord to the outside MOLLE on the back in a zig-zag pattern, and presto, improv mesh webbing.

      I actually kinda prefer it this way so you can attach more stuff to the sides. The camelbak is the perfect length for the sides of these and otherwise you can put either a sustainment pouch or e tool to Balance the weight out

    I've been wearing plate carriers since 2012. The one issue I've had was fitting a rucksack over the carrier and being able to shoulder my rifle. Not only that, but not pinching off the blood circulation to my head whenever I'd raise my pistol to my eyes. Rucksacks and carriers have evolved since then. I've learned with PCs the shoulder straps have to be flat, but padded. With medium to large backpacks the shoulder straps have to be wide and flat so as to evenly distribute the weight and allow the butt of the rifle to have real estate to be pressed against the shoulder. Searching for such perfect combinations for my own personal taste has taken me years.

    Thanks for the review, sold me on it. Picked one of these up recently. Definitely NOT designed in Natick... Somebody had a look at the old ALICE ruck and listened to the soldiers who used it.
    Former 11B, C Co. 4/9 IN, 6th ID (Light), Alaska in the early 90's. We had the CFP-90 (the old predecessor to the current large MOLLE) and regularly ripped straps and buckles off it. It was especially bad if you had the bitch bag/tripod or a baseplate. We were issued the large ALICE ruck when it had to be DX'd. This is a little small for AK, but still wish we had this for JRTC rotations/summer FTXs.

    I wasnt personally issued this ruck but a lot of my friends were, even though I hated my issue ruck (molle 4000) Im glad i wasnt given this one instead. Whenever I saw my friends take it out it seemed to lose structure and would sag pretty hard and theres really no straps to aid this unlike in the larger rucks. The frame is even skinner which id assume make it more fragile than the already damage prone plastic frames from the larger rucks aswell. I find the niche of big ruck too big and small ruck too small should be better handled by allowing the larger rucks to strap down to comfortably pack much less equipment as needed (which I could forsee being a problem with the Molle 2 large ruck but wasnt much of a problem with my molle 4000). That being said asthetically it looks sick i just generally dont like the design of it functionally

    It's actually one of my fav issued ruck or piece of gear issued. I can honestly live out of it for about 4-5 days weather pending but the fact that it actually has smaller pockets in the larger pockets is way better than the larger ruck that is literally 1 giant bag and two sustainment bags. For my larger ruck I use an Malice pack that has been modified heavily with extra pouches and it's leaps and bounds better than the larger ruck. This is also a great jumpable ruck too. If you need to wear it with body armor though I would suggest removing the frame though and I've swapped out to different shoulder straps and added the larger ruck waist pack or else that plastic frame will dig into your lower back super bad.

    Unrelated historical note: In the Napoleonic wars, the British packs were godawful. Chafed and even choked the soldiers using them. The French packs were well-made and much more comfortable. So you could always tell the veterans from the recruits in Wellington's army, because the veterans swooped on French packs after battle. Using a French pack proved you'd been in battle.

    Review the Crossfire bags! The DG-3 and DG-16 look like a really cool improvement on this frame design, and also designed to be comfy with or without armor.

    I scored the bag itself from the Sportsman's Guide store for $10 bucks, cuz it was mismarked. The only problem is, it didn't come with any of the other components, so trying to find those has been exciting... especially when Google always gives me components for the large ruck.

    • @Masood62
      @Masood62 4 года назад +1

      Components are hard to find (I learned the hard way). Mcguire Army Surplus has the frames new. Hip belts can be found on eBay (medium and large). The medium shoulder straps are impossible to find (even used). Some folks use the larger enhanced shoulder staps but they dont attach the same as the medium.

    The medium ruck is something that I do not like at all. You cannot fit anything in it if you are taking all the components of the sleep system (Bivy, winter, summer bags). You have to take everything out of the ruck to get to the sleeping bag versus just opening the bottom of the large ruck. You cannot attach the sleeping mat to it like you could with the top flap of the large ruck, there are no sustainment pouches, and fitting a camelback into it is a massive PITA.
    I have never done any civilian camping so I do not know about how it would work with that.

    Love the medium ruck but that waist belt is worthless especially for larger framed folks. I switch mine out with a full size large MOLLE ruck waist belt

    Great ruck, but so expensive. I'm from EU, Baltic states.
    As an alternative, I've got french 45-50l ruck, sac de combat made by Cepovett. Brand new, with bladder and everything that comes with this ruck. Only for €80 🤘😂

    I took the big pad from the new ruck and put it on my old alice pack and its amazing! I like my assult pack but hate that its acu id kill to find an assult pack in woodland/bdu/dcu. This new pack you got is making me want to try it. I always had problems with the plastic frames getting brittle and breaking in freezing temps im in northern Minnesota-30 to -60 is possible and not uncommon whats the worst cold environment you have had it in and did you have a frame break taking an impact?

    I got a legit new/never issued one off amazon. Problem is: The inside is dry-sticky. Sticky enough that your hands will get mildly sticky and your gear ends up getting sticky. I separately bought a never-issued military butt pack and have noticed the same thing. Not sure what the deal is. Thoughts?

      @hardcorecampinggear. Hi, don't know what the issue is with the stickiness of the waterproofing layer that's applied but...even mine had that same problem when issued new.Might be poor chemical composition and rapid break down period.I don't know any soldiers that got one issued that was dry and not sticky to the touch.The dry bags is the only thing I trusted putting any gear in the ruck to prevent any of that getting on it especially clothing.Still got my full Molle II Large with the 3 Day Pack and Waist Pack and other pouches,being a former Ranger I might have been given a pass cause I didn't have to return it to the CIF or other members of my Unit.We were and a small 8 person detail and I will not get into anymore information than that.All the best to you.

    Have you tried that combo of A.L.I.C.E. pack with M.O.L.L.E. shoulder straps, waist belt, and sleep shelf?
    As for that MOLLE waist belt, is there any third party replacement that conformed to what you would have liked? I need them to be wide all the way through for full support to take any strain off my neck because of my spine condition at the bottom of my neck and not much in the way of shoulders. My heavier loaded ALICE pack doesn't bother me like my lighter school pack does. But the straps and belt are a nuisance. They tend to dig in because they're too narrow.

    See i appreciate the medium ruck for what it is but a unit should never issue it in place of the large ruck. If i had my way every soldier gets the large ruck, medium ruck, and assault pack; That way they're ready for any mission and don't have to BS around loose straps and unused space tempting them to overpack. I'm sure some units try and do it, especially active side where there's more money to throw around; But my unit in the guard only issues large OR medium for the ruck, and everybody i've spoken to regarding the medium hates it, and it has caused frustration with leadership wanting a packing list for rucks or field ops who realize their soldiers with medium rucks and no sustainment pouches cannot pack the entire list.
