Glad I stuck around, at first I thought you were just gonna show retail tanking.
Is that even called tanking then?
outstanding guide. Thank you for going into the deeper complexities. This is going into my classic guide playlist.
I was planning to level a warrior but stay away from tanking, but after watching this I think I’ll put my strafe tanking ability to use :) Thx for the awesome guide!
Real nice actually informative videos. This channel needs more attention!
What I enjoy most is you cover the CONCEPT of tanking. It's not about the class as much as a wholistic approach. This is A+. I raided Nax as a rogue. Knew do inside out but had no idea just how technical tanking was. I appreciate them now. Ty!!!!
I like the advice you give but the video does not match your advice. If you try to tank 10 mobs you are done for. No healer can outheal that. And your damage mitigation will never be so high. Not to mention that you can't kite-tank range mobs and your mobility is shit as you can't charge or intervene in classic.
Also you will have a lot less rage.
Most of your advice is correct though. Like the nameplates and using low rage attacks.
Kite tanking has one big downside though. Especially in groups with people you don't know. If one fucker fucks up and aggros one of the mobs you are kiting... you can't just taunt him back and get aggro on him again.
Also other Melee DDs need to move constantly to keep doing damage. So if they don't or can't your high level tanking might end up hurting the group more than it helps. It's not just stupidity that keeps many tanks standing still but consideration for their melee DDs. As a lot of damage in classic comes from auto attack you can really impair your rogues abilites to do damage with that.
The consumables were new to me. Definetly trying that but since you are much less mobile (on the map) in classic farming might be a little more time consuming so I probably won't have these things on hand all the time.
Great Video nontheless as it does something very important that many guides miss. It tells you HOW to play. Not just what to play. It's a little strange that not many "guides" cover this.
As someone who revels in Tanking i heartily appreciate and approve this video!
Really like your fresh 60 tank build, makes a lot of sense.
You did a really good job showing some in depth tips and tricks on being a good tank without support. I wanna see a video on group dynamics, no one seems to mention it.
Like how important it was to pick a kill target, backup kill target, and varied CC. How to work with your group comp, what to do with two saps, limited CC, etc. Also the incredible smoothness that comes with playing with people that know their toolkit.
I started as a prot warr and moved to a hunter in classic, one of the things I brought over was how diverse and helpful a hunter can be to a tank without sacrificing too much DPS. And the same goes for many classes, The resto druid that will root targets himself to stall for the tank to get there; the feral druid that will sprint, pop form, and taunt something back to you.
Mobility was a really big issue with warrior tanking often requiring alot of practice to be able to catch things that ran off because the hunter didn't understand kill priority. Everything you laid out in this vid goes alot more in depth, but I can't tell you how frustrated I used to get when it would be four mobs, first skull, second X, third sap, fourth sheep, and sheep would break and my healer is getting bent because the hunter couldn't be bothered to step in.
Tanks were, and probably will be the strategists of the group. Our job wasn't just to get punched and make sure you didn't get punched, we dictated kill priority, CC priority, and when 1/5 of us was a dipshit, we picked up the slack.
That comes with an amazing nuance that I have never seen anyone cover. You have to know how mob damage/CC abilities/Armor apply to you and the four that came with you. Spellcasters are always first kill, ones with disruptive CC before just "high damage/low armor". Tank mobs are always last, high melee DPS is always either a CC target or second kill for weak armor, etc.
Do you have an LOS position that once you've marked and CC'd you can pull them to? Almost mitigating damage to anyone entirely?
The truth is that being a really good tank works well, but one of the things I loved about classic is that if you grouped with a bunch of nubcakes you have to teach them their own toolkit, or leave. Your pick, you're the tank, you'll be back in the same instance 20m or less.
Wow! Great tips here! Good tanking is more complex than most realize!
Very well done. I have tanked for a very long time and was very impressed with the video and advice.
Great video, keep ‘em coming!
Glad I got to see this guide. Video is really in depth, and informative. Grats on the welp btw lol.
Outstanding video, thank you x
Yo Punkrat, this beat is sick. You should use it as background music in some of your other videos! Love your content and just saw your video on the Blizzard Employee leak! Great stuff and keep it up!
I loved tanking in vanilla. Made me feel like a massive pro because so many other people were so bad at it.
Thanks a lot for this video, it's great! I really like getting tactical mastery in my builds and the ones you posted don't use it. I guess I can get used to not having it, but being able to berz -> intercept -> d stance has always been a huge tool in my tanking experience
Great video this is exactly the type of info I was looking for.
Looks good! I definitely want to be the big boss tank on my server and will use all the tricks I can get.
Thanks mate, just got grilled in strath live for not holding aggro fighting the zombie mobs. It was getting harder to tank as a 60 fury war so glad to have watched this
Aye brah this was by far the best tanking guide I have ever seen. I leveled as prot back in vanilla. It was the most brutal and gruesome experience ever. So bad that when I hit 60, BC had just dropped a month earlier so I retired my warrior never to play him again. Back then we were all NOOBS. But if I had known even half of this info, I would have had a better tanking experience. When WOTLK came out I was a holy pally but I always wondered why tanks and rogues always jumped around while fighting. Now I know straffing and jumping is the key. If you could answer a questions for me. The straffing, jumping and camera method you mentioned can that apply for all classes especially in pvp? Can't wait for classic to drop even though im going to start with a mage, after seeing this video I will DEFINITELY reroll a warrior. Thanks brah you are the MAN!!!
I first learned this strafing method by one of if not THE sickest hunters I have ever seen. His name is Brang. Nightelf Hunt. Check out his older pvp content and guides. His how to hunt video is awesome and his pvp videos are insane. Some of the sickest moves I've ever seen. Especially from like level 70-100. Enjoy.
My main in vanilla was a priest and I found switching to warrior to tank a lot of fun because I was already used to paying attention to everything going on. It also gave me the appreciation to keep tabs on my health and help the priests threat by kiting and moving around.
A good refresher for this week!
Great guide!
Another great video punk!
One note. Battleshout generates threat the same way healing allies does. Meaning the more allies you apply battleshout too the more threat it does.
Nice guide, some info drop on the warrior macros would probably be appreciated as well.
I'm getting into tanking now and I can say this is a lot of obscure information that is rarely discussed. It's good to know. My one question is, when you talk about strafe kiting, how exactly are you moving backwards? While still keeping everything else front-facing?
Great video, just not sure about the background music..
Hey Punkrat, great video! I remember tanking in classic wow on my tauren warrior, but I was never on your level with the different pots and stuff. You have some GREAT tips on here and I look forward to getting back into all of this.
That said I have to ask, what song is playing I'm the background? It sounds amazing and I can't seem to find it anywhere lol. I'd really appreciate link!
Thanks man, and keep up the great work, I love your vids. Have a good one!

@@PeasantKaitou thanks man!
Bloodrage made agro as well in vanilla i know kungen used it don't know if it will be like that in classic its a hidden thing cant remember where they confirmed it
This! This is what i am talking about!
When i ask i fellow warrior how to tank, this is what i mean.
Thank you.
What is your opinion on Impale Prot? It was essentially king of the mountain back in the day, providing a mixture of high threat gen, high damage (for a tank, anyway), and retaining higher mitigation than fury tanking.
You forgot
Either have a pure dmg alt to keep your warrior tank financially alive
Or grab a guild willing to pour money into your repair bills and stuff
Or just set up a really good dungeon group and run strat ud for righteus orbs? (a lot of people should be willing to come farm these)
When you hold down the right mouse button with A/D, and they are bound to their normal turn keys, you are effectively strafing too right? So you can sorta just kite sideways, no? :)
4:21, 4:22, 4:26
At those instances you switched between "A" & "D". When I do that I need to rotate the camera 180 degrees, but yours is practicly still. How?!
I did this already back in 2004, and have only figured out how to do it by rotating the camera.
Awesome vid!
Subbing for this video. Great guide.
yes but how do i stance dance? can you make a new classic video focused on this @punkrat
well done
I don't think I've ever seen strafe kiting as a tank. Very interesting idea but god damn it looks spazzy.
Great video though with lots of good information.
Being moble is EXTREMELY important. It makes Notice how he keeps intervening to the healer? He's not only absorbing all the agro the healer has accumulated, but he's charging away from the mobs, thus not getting hit. Once he gets full control of the mobs again, he then charges or heroic leaps back to his original position to essentially do the same thing. Thus not taking damage in that 3-5 second span. It's what good tanks do. I started rolling an alt mage after being a prot warrior and I hated seeing idiot tanks just fucking standing there. while mobs creep around them and keep hitting them from beind and they yell at me for over agroing when I literally am just trying to get pyroblast to proc... It's something I learned way back in BC, the more youmove the less damage you take, the less damage you take, the better your healer is, the more you kite mobs around, the better the ranged has to just go ape shit as the mobs run back and forth. The melee dps will fucking bitch and hate you for it, but I normally ignore it when they say stuff like "OMG STOP MOVING THEM AROUND SO MUCH.
A good tank will do these easy tactics and it's just tank theory at it's most rudimentiary level. when you are level capped you can do a typical rotation of charge/heroic leap into the mobs, shockwave them to stun them in position, put 3 sunders on each target, and shockwave and shield block then whenever shockwave is up keep them stunlocked in the same spot to give the melee dps a chance to go ham on them, but in dire situations, I'm doing what he's going in this video, intervene is your friend. Yet most tanks don't even have it binded.. I have not played since Cata but when they introduced banners shouts to gain agro easier there's no reason why you should ever lose agro even with dps going full tilt without concen for agro resets. I don't see his movments as strange. You really have to keep everything flowing.
Great video. I plan on playing a Warrior so this helps.
Prot warriors are so much fun. I was a blood elf prot war for so long. You literally have a racial abiity that silences every mob around you. If I were you, I'd roll a BE :)
@@bobbyewing311 You can't roll BE in classic dum dum
@@quickplaya I never said I played classic dumbshit. I started playing in BC and I originally started out as a NE Warrior and I class/faction changed to BE for the racial ability. So go f off
One other thing you should mention is to make sure to turn the mob you are tanking so that the back of the mob is facing the raid. This will reduce the amount of parries and blocks on your melee dps classes and will give a small boost to your overall raid dps. Also backstab rogues and feral druids (basically a backstab rogue) will thank you because they won't have to chase the back of the mob to dps. Healers will also thank you because there are some mobs and bosses that do a cone of AOE damage in front of them and if the mob is facing the raid then everyone will take damage.
The aoe slow in fury is what I need on my warrior. It'll make it feel more like retail tanking to me on that part since I'll feel more in control of the mobs and when I'm gonna get hit.
I'm just amazed at the learning curve with vanilla tanking and I love it. I just couldn't stand grinding mobs to level up and kinda feel like dungeoning to 60 or power leveling my Friend so he will power level my warrior.
cuz dungeoning isnt grinding mobs...
gonna tank for the first time ever for my pals, I can't let em down so I'm doing my homework. Good video.
Hey friend, I’ve been playing classic for years, have two 60 warriors, and two 60 priests that I’ve used to heal the best tanks I’ve ever seen. If you have questions or want a leg up on the other new warriors out there, message me and I’ll get you my discord info. :-)
Well i am a main holy priest in vanilla, but i really wanna switch things up this time. And really wanted to main a warrior as my new role of playing in classic, my friend told me ""i better never play tank because you gonna get flammed if you do one thing wrong"" but i wanna ignore that fact and wanna be a warrior and be a main tank for a guild for who knows. but i am happy to learn from this video and what you have said, encourge me to play one so thank you so much Punkrat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive never gotten the hang of strafe kiting. I always get dazed even rebinding strafe.
Cant wait. I love war tank in vanilla and bc
Thanks great vid !
They key to raid boss tanking. Spam sunset armor. Even after 5 stacks. It keeps build high threat.
l like your playstyle, remind me of my own, i rolled a rogue in vanilla +a warr alt- pvp and semi tanking mostly for friends dungeon runs, and i would actually, ditch talents for stance dance and imp sunder and put them into unbridled wrath, cuz all your regen generators beside your normal ones also caused alot of threat, same goes for bloodrage, also i would spam alot of battle shouts in raids, and demo in instances, that is also metric ton of threat, just its divided by number of players you buffed on number of mobs that are actually hitting you. Also would take 2 from imp armor from items, and put into silece on shield bash,,cuz people where shit at silencing =D(talking bout dungeons).Never had any rage issues on warr so all reducing rage for abilities where not necessary..and yeah, force reactive disc
This may sound weird but... I need the song to rap on it, also great guide ^^
Great video. Quick question though? At 3:55 what abilities are those on 2, 5, Shift-2, Shift-3 and E ? This looks like retail.
Oh so we have heroic leap in classic? Can't seem to find that skill at the trainer.
How do I know? I was hardcore tank in vanilla, clearing BWL and naxx
I actually learned new stuff. I.e. not a low effort video. GJ
@The opportunist Just played on the stress test, strafe run is set to Q and E, he recommends binding them to A and D. This also lets you have Q and E for easy binds for your spells. I don't remember the default camera setting
What about needing to hearth back for repairs during long dungeons lol
Just the info my noob self was looking for, thanks.
I love how this guide is for classic showing a bunch of shit that isn't even in classic.
Au contraire mon frere
this stuff really frustrates me because i never played vanilla and i'm playing classic looking for guides for prot warrior. A few things seem to not be possible that the guides (mostly released before classic release) said you could do. I.e Hamstring method, outranging auto attacks, I feel like this is mostly not possible in classic, but I could be wrong. Enemies hit me from FAR beyond the range they should be able to
cool vid man. what you think of cleave? more of a rage dump thing? i remember using in dungeons and it being pretty good
he literally says only use it above 70 rage
Rebind A and D to strafe and remove camera spring, this is the best tank advice ever.
thats the first thing you do when you create a character not just tank
Good video. How will strafing effect the mele dps you are grouped with the tank? the mele dps will have to move when the tank strafes lowering their dps
I'd say their dps suffers more if the tank dies. If there's plenty enough healing for the incoming dmg then sure you can just stand there spamming 1-2-3. Besides what kind of sucky melee can't move with the mob? It's not like they have anything but instants.
As a Feral tank I was hoping to find something new, but naah :P OP warrior guide tho!
To add to your aoe threat (via on hit damage) you can use crystal spires so you have another thorns / essence of pure flame.
It's from the crystal spire questline in ungoro that eventually teaches you certain crystal combinations provide corresponding buffs.
Do you think protection is outdated now? A lot of guilds on ND-horde (even myself atm) are rolling with fury-defiance or fury-anger management/impale. Feel like im starting to see prot a lot less these days.
for the 2nd portion, it really depends on gear and content patch.
Hey man can you make a video entirely on the strafing? I can’t seem to figure out how to strafe and hit my buttons at the same time
invest in an RPG mouse. Fairly cheap and easy to get acclimated to. 15ish buttons on side of mouse where your thumb rests
Does Demoralizing Shout generate threat if mobs already have it applied? Can it be spammed?
Kind of random, but the punkrat logo is fucking sweet I love it
Background music is banging.
I feel like I watched a guide on how to be a gansta.
Hey you talk about strafe kiting to break attack timers, is that because the mob will stand still as long as your in their hit range and once you step out they have to take a few steps to get back in range? The reason I'm asking, im wondering if you essentially should be on a constant move during any multi enemy fight?
not on constant move, no. but there are situations where u can save your life by breaking out of attack range. Especially while the mobs are slowed.
Hey big homie should I level a warrior second so I can feed it gear? I want to be a tank but know how shitty it can be to farm. When I played vanilla our tanks were always crying about repairs. If we didn’t foot the bill and feed them consumables they were always threatening to leave the guild for greener pastures
I'd say you should, especially if the guild you are running with does not provide repair bills. I was lucky my wife was an Alchemist so my consumes were covered, an my Hunter covered my repair bills, when the guild wouldn't pay it. So I would say yes, roll an alt to feed the beast :-)
Hey guys, here's a question: is it worth leveling in prot spec if you have a pocket healer with you? I mean, you can pull multiple mobs at once and maintain good survivability and aggro while generating lots of rage and being healed. Or maybe you can do the same thing in dps spec and prot is completely irrelevant in any situation while leveling?
no
You should update this if you're playing a tank in classic.
I play as a warrior tank on classic. Kiting mobs is not an option. The idea is to hold the mobs in one spot in front of you, stun and aggro them, then DPS players will do the rest. DPS players just don't like moving at all. Thank you for your video.
isnt battle shout good for AOE threat. ive heard that form a lot of people
best tips for sure
dude, your tanking mobility is amazing :D
i was a stand here type of tank, but now i'm going to be a damn captain america!
you dont have that mobility in classic... he is using abilities that arent live for years..
@Grailer Lmao, init tho xD
what professions would you use?
Finally a useful guide!
ty man, this is the exact reaction I am looking for. I'm really glad others feel the same way as me.
Okay, yeah I may as well try to tank some. I really want to play arms but I can get gear by tanking cuz most guilds are good about gearing tanks. I tanked heroic jaina and I hadn't even tanked a raid boss before that, I did alright too. I'm sure I can handle it. I also really want thunderfury and tanking is the best way to get it so, yeah alright. Leveling up I can still tank dungeons with an arms build yeah?
Does the enrage talent affect shield slam damage?
So I fucked up picking mining and blacksmithing in classic?
Could turn down the music a bit in the future. Isolated the music track, gets you insane to listen to. Ty for UL.

💛🧡💜 YOU ARE NEIGHTER a Punk nor a Rat. We love you Mr PunkRat. You are the reason we get up every morning. You are the reason why we come to RUclipss. 💛🧡💜💛🧡💜💛🧡💜
Was thinking of rolling up a paladin tank(I don't have time for raiding), but after this the paladin might just move to an alt. Hard to tell at the moment. I've got a friend who almost always goes with a dwarf fighter in any RPG we play. He has no desire to tank, though. So... hmm...
I played paladin in classic, even a lot of protection spec specifically. It's very hard to be viable and most people you group with won't even give you the chance. At the time I thought it was dumb; I *could* tank alright through about BRD or so at least. However looking back, it really isn't optimal. If you want to tank definitely go warrior. I loved my paladin but they were a little wonky in classic. Blizzard didn't handle hybrid classes very well.
Dank vid bro
thanks man
background song anyone?
I'm on of those people that are pretty scaried to tank lol, I feel like it's a huge responsibility and all eyes are on you, I'd be pretty sad to slow down a raid and while I know every other role should feel the same when cooperating with a large group of people, I feel overwhelmed when tanking lol, even if I know I'm better than the average but not the best. It's because I feel like I don't know enough even if I studied the boss.
Tanking is cake but it's also a responsibility at the same time. You're basically the "leader" of the group. Tell your deeps to attack skull, use a high threat ability on that skull, then start tagging the other mobs so your healer doesn't aggro the extras.
Whats the Jump spell you are using? at 2:57
Its not that people are scared to tank, its more so all the stuff you have to do to get into WoW tanking. For example you need a ton of addons, macros, keybinds, guides, target marking, etc and trust me the list goes on. I just downloaded WoW classic and about to level a prot warrior, itll be my first time being a tank but ill update this post and let you all know how it goes
Easy, thanks for the guide big dawg
I came for the comments also.
I leveled one wrrior to 111 using FURY from the beginning..it was alright.
I just made a another warrior using and starting off with TANK....soooo much better,
Since I move around instead of standing in one space.I have heard about HAMSTRING,which I did not jse one the other warrior.
I just jump and move around, etc, which keeps you safer than just STANDING THERE.
GOOD CONTENT by the way
So it's cool to kite mobs around while tanking? Not going to piss off melee dps cause they can't just stand there and hit? Do you want to approach it like you would if you were alone and trying to survive against multiple mobs while getting as much aggro as you can?
Dude I’ve never been a tank. I solo’d a lot in vanilla and a warrior was too tough for me, so I became a hunter. Now with classic and tanks in such demand I’m ready to become THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR
Are the builds provided applicable for WOW Classic in it's current state?
yea more than applicable.
I just realized how hard it must be to tank without Shockwave. Yeah, that would be pretty much impossible for me. I got too spoiled in BC lol
Shockwave was wrath
Would you level prot or respec at 60 only?
No real need to respec until raids really. Stayed arms all the way until I was ready to tank / dps 40 mans.
do you level as a tank? or should youswitch to tanking spec at 60?
Also curious about this. I would rather level as arms but I think you can tank as arms while leveling but I am not 100%.
Tanking some raids is probably a great way to get arms gear though. I know it was in TBC don't know why vanilla would be different. At least the weapon, there will probably be more competition for armor and such from all the fury warriors but I don't mind tanking in pve, I can play arms in PvP which is more fun than pve dps anyway. Also will be able to get tier sets since all the warrior ones are itemized for tanking (and they all look sweet) and thunderfury too.
where can i find the addon KTM?
Can you make a guide on how to be the worst tank on my server?
Do mass pulls like in the video instead of controlled pulls ;)
