Great informative video. No doubt about it High lift jacks are very useful in certain scenarios. But i have a winch, bottle jack and pieces of wood. It works.

I kept a bottle jack in the engine compartment that I used for lifting the axles and I never had the money for a hi-lift but instead I had a old bumper jack in the back which was similar to the the hi-lift. I used it to lift the vehicle up high and push the vehicle over to get out of a hole or to put what ever I could find under the tires for traction. As for a hi-lift for a winch, if that’s all I had, yea it’s better than not having anything.

I have a hiLift jack and the winch kit which Iv used And a wheel lift which lifts the wheel directly rather than the body so like your bottle jack it doesn’t have to go very far Then you put your axle stand / wood block etc under your axle and ground /It’s a very versatile tool But big and heavy

I have both, bottle jack for raising axle though when home I use a trolley jack.
The high lift is great if used with care and can be used for more than just a jack.
Still carry the high lift base as helps spread load of the bottle jack on soft ground.
High lift is in bed of pick up with a neoprene cover over the mechanism and it works great.
Would like one of the American style off road trolley jacks and saw a good mod of a Humvee scissor jack using an impact gun to wind it up quickly. Exhaust jacks are popular in Southern hemisphere but never appealed to me.

The Hi-Lift is a very useful bit of kit, but you have to be very careful, they can bite! Treat it with respect, and make sure that you know what forces are operating on it at all times, and, in which direction.
    It will serve you well.

A great tool for sure but must be aware of how to use it properly in different situations

A hi-lift can be used to lift one end of LR out of ruts and cast over 1 metre to the side onto firmer ground, ( I would recommend a couple of people to steady the LR and push it in the right direction ) I have used it as a winch but only to pull a tree I was cutting in to a specific confined space, it worked very well although my girlfriend who was operating as the winchgirl was trapped at the end of the garden until I had cut up the tree into sections :-)

I have both, but I don’t use the hi lift jack to lift the car for tyre changing/ maintenance, but its got lots of other uses. I have a bottle jack to lift the car for tyres and general maintenance, with stands. I’ve never seen a bottle jack fall/ fail, but I have seen a number of Hi lifts and farmers jacks fail and slip. I also have an exhaust bag, but that’s a PITA and takes up a lot of space, only used if I’m really off road.

Thanks for sharing! indeed we heard many more stories with a high lift failure and maybe none about a bottle jack fail

A Hi-Lift, in my experience, may slip if the climbing pin hasn't fully engaged into it's hole, always worth checking after every stroke.
And, like @glennj6465 I use a Lift-Mate for changing wheels. Quick and easy.@@offtrackfamily

I opted for a bottle jack for maintenance and tyre changes.
I’ve got an air jack to replace the other functions the high lift has.
High lift is an amazing tool, but I’ve got a winch so I don’t need it for that purpose. An air jack is lighter, and less likely to give you a concussion when compared to a high lift. I don’t recommend high lifts to inexperienced users, because it is hard to use one safely, and using it incorrectly could be deadly.

We also experience it that way and think there are more chances to have a situation go worse with a high lift than with a bottle jack

I have a Hi-Lift inside the Defender and keep it disassembled due to the awkward shape. The rail bar and the handle tube are under the rear bench and the rest of the mechanism is in a separate bag and I found it is much easier to store it like this. I tried it as a winch but for this you need a heavy chain and the winching attachment. It is hard work and you wouldn't do it every day. The advantage compared to front winch is that you can use it in every direction, not only in front. When winching with the Hi-Lift I heard some people use 2 heavy duty ratchet straps instead of the chain and that it works reasonably well. I haven't tried it yet but I would be happy to not carry that chain any more. There is also an attachment for the hi lift that you can use to lift one wheel and pack something underneath. that is neat but doesn't work with land rover standard wheels because there are no holes to hook it. Hi-Lift is also useful for lifting the whole front or rear of the car and pivoting it sideways to get it outside deep ruts. For this you need the tubular attachment that fits in the Defender chassis rear and front. For changing a tire I think bottle jack under the axle is much better. Due to the solid axle you do not have to overcome the suspension travel. Bottle jack that came standard with the Defender is fine and is worth having it all the time even if you have the Hi-Lift. I wouldn't change a tire with the Hi-Lift due to instability. And finally there is the ARB bottle jack that works more like a Hi-Lift and people who have it say is much easier to use. However it is much more expensive and you can not use it to winch. All these variants need some form of support underneath like a board, especially on soft ground.

Used the highlift I got from the former car owner twice for changing tires...but only because I didn't have another lift. Which bottle jack do you use? In shops around I only found ones that don't have enough hight travel or were to weak for the weight of a Defender😢

Yes you need to find the right one. There's certainly on amazon? I think my husband bought it at Feu Vert in France
