Time for the big apple to get a taste of Crystal Lake. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is often regarded as a contender for worst of the franchise. A deceptive title, terrible acting, and a lackluster series of kills all add up to one seriously flawed sequel and a low point for everyone's favorite hockey masked killer.

Jason Takes Vancouver
Jason takes a Paycheck
TrueBoredom
I was going to say that looks like something from supernatural or flash citywise
I think it was Toronto but who’s counting. Lol
@@ColinCayvzmusic1111 it's vancouver
Honestly, my favorite thing about “Friday the 13th, Part VIII” was “Darkest Side of the Night.”
It’s very popular among Friday fans.
Jason takes a BOAT to Manhattan
...I think Camp Crystal Lake was supposed to be in New Jersey. Not a LONG ride from Jersey to the Big Apple. LoL
Jason Reese I live in New Jersey
Jason takes a whaling boat everyone pretends is a cruise ship for the maybe 1 1/2 trip to Manhattan, which requires venturing into open ocean for some reason
Jason takes a shity boat to Manhattan
Jason hunted Alice down in part 2. He's definitely vengeful and not just about territory.
Write! And at this point Jason is the living dead. He’s a zombie. A monster. He doesn’t just wanna be left alone like Jason from 2-4. He is a walking killing machine. I always looked at it as him just walking around crystal lake killing people until there was no one else to kill so he hopped on a boat with more victims. His killing spree isn’t just limited to a lake.
Well Alice was a special case as she killed his mom.Jason dosent have anything really personal against the other characters except for the fact they enter his home. The people hes chasing in New york are pretty much just him finishing his work.Once you have entered his home your free reign no matter were you go if he can get you your dead. You violate his home its over.
BoomStick Critique That is 100% correct! But then again, Tommy killed him so why didn't he go after him like he did with Alice? That never made sense.
I dont think jason ever took Tommy killing as personal as Alice killing his mother. Also the reason Jason was able to find Alice is because in the original script fro part 2 she returns to the lake to face her fears an Jason follows her home. It was in the original script for part 2 but deleted for the finished version. It was restored in the novel of part 2. So going with that maybe Jason just couldnt find him.
That would've been a better opening than that interminable recap pf part one, and makes much more sense. I always wondered if Jason looked her up in the phone book, or something else very un-Jasony.
The sole saving grace of this film was seeing it in the theater when it came out, and it played at the most ghetto-assed grindhouse in my area. The bloodthirsty audience was hilariously merciless with its running commentary as the film's suck factor grew with every passing minute, and beer bottles were even thrown at the screen. It was spectacular.
They must all be movie buffs if they were complaining that bad.
That sign reading “Wake me when we get to New York” you hold in the title card for the video is very funny and definitely makes sense in regards to the movie.
Oh shit two F13 reviews in one day
Thank you
I guess I am kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Mohammad Nehemiah i use FlixZone. You can find it by googling =)
@Archie Kevin Definitely, have been using Flixzone for since march myself :D
@Archie Kevin Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !
@Mohammad Nehemiah Glad I could help =)
Because of the time jump in part 7 (established by the director in the commentary), this technically takes place in the late 90s or early 2000s... and it's the most 80s looking installment in the series.
Still… a masterpiece compared to the worst Nightmare movie
I can agree with that. lol None of the major slasher franchises stoop as low as Freddy did
I disagree. As much as Freddys Revenge sucks, it’s not as bad as Jason X, Jason Goes to Hell or Jason Takes Manhattan
Freddys Revenge isnt the worst Nightmare though that honor belongs to the remake or Freddys Dead
IMO The Dream Child is in there with Freddy's Dead and the remake as one of the worst. Freddy's Dead is the worst though. It's a bad comedy trying to pass itself off as a horror comedy. I've called it the Seed of Chucky of Nightmare on Elm Street before. Freddy's daughter is the only interesting character in it, Freddy's jokes are just bad instead of the sick, twisted, dark black comedy humour he should have. The worst of which being him acting like The Wicked Witch of the West and the power glove shilling. Inserting the overused "bullied at school and having an abusive alcoholic dad or stepdad" cliches into Freddy's backstory, the stupid Looney Tunes sound effects when Freddy's killing Spencer. And I don't know why they had John Doe get amnesia if they weren't going to reveal his past at any point since they could have given him a better "origin" than being a random Springwood kid who just happened to be the last survivor of the killing spree Krueger went on in the decade between 5 and 6. Usually when a character has amnesia it's usually set up for them to learn their pasts later on. Not so with him. Tracy's a bitch and her being molested by her dad as a kid is just tacked on to try and make people feel sorry for her and overlook that she's a boring character. About the only interesting parts of it are Freddy becoming so powerful he's starting to influence the waking world and planning to spread beyond Springwood to the world.
The Dream Child is one of the weakest but it has good special effects an a likable lead as well as good visuals.Making it at least watchable to ok for a slasher.Freddys Dead is the worst your right it trys to be a horror comedy but it dosent just try to be a horror comedy it wants to be a big dumb b movie.Your right its the Seed of Chucky of the franchise so depending on your taste in comedy will love or hate.Freddys Dead is ok for a dumb B movie horror film like Seed of Chucky or Return of the Killer Tomatoes. But the diss connect is it dosent play anything like a Nightmare film because its so off the wall. The kid who forgets who he is was Jacob in the original script the grown child from dream child. The abusive dad was also how Freddy was killed in the original script. The first script had Freddy killed by Jacobs girlfriend she turns into Freddys worst fear his abusive dead step father an beats him to death ripping the souls from his body. In the original script Jacob dies half way through in a twist after being the main character like John Do from Freddys Dead. The old script also had 3 of the Dream Warriors return from the dead in the dreams now with super comic book type dream powers.Teaming with Jacob to destroy Freddy who had killed Alice an become so powerful he put the town into a living Nightmare world with comic book creatures.Jacob dying prevents Freddy from returning because he has no one who can bring him kids any more like Alice. It was called A Nightmare on Elm Street the Dream Police.
Eh, still hated Part IX more than this one.
definitely
My movies are better than that freak of a slasher anyway
@@MINI-MYERS Resurrection though 🤪🤪
You missed one more positive: the opening song. It kicks so much ass.
Yup the intro its just great
I thought it was cheesy
Cinematic World of Benji Sure it is but that doesn’t mean it can’t be good. Embrace the cheese and enjoy.
@@07foxmulder You do have a point.
A better name for this movie would be "Friday the 13th part VIII: Jason takes forever to get to Manhattan"
its my favorite Jason movie. I don't have a problem with it. I think its one of the best and the creative. I also like the one with Jason and the girl with telekinesis because its different. Jason goes to hell sucks though. I tried watching multiple times and kept falling asleep.
It's my favourite jason movie too. I think it is just a good memories thing for me, I used to sit in and get a good horror movie to watch when my mum and dad went on a night out. This was one of the best alongside the Demons movies
Part 9 looks cool but not a good movie
I only watched 'Jason Goes to Hell' once. the only part I like was when Freddy's glove pulled Jason's mask down. I was practically screaming, "Freddy is coming back!"
“Boring deaths”
Shows JJ’s death, arguably one of the interesting kills in the film.
But tbh she should have died way later
come on man... it's not that bad. There are definitely some pretty noteworthy kills that you didn't bother mentioning like the coal through the chest... In the part where he throws the guy that plays Jason and Freddy vs Jason up against the wall.
It is that bad and those werent noteworthy at all to me
In cody's defense those two kills are not important at all lol
MakeHipHopGreatAgain Yeah… none of the characters really mattered... But for some reason this was my favorite as a kid. Realize how badge it is now and the fact that how did they get from a lake to the ocean... That type shit. But I think he looks pretty cool in this movie. I think he didn't dry off because he was constantly jumping back in the water.
No. It is that bad.
It is that bad though. It’s profoundly horrible.
I think Jason Goes To Hell is the absolute worst film in the entire Friday the 13th franchise.
JGTH is bad but JTM is worse.
Jason X the worst
@@YourPointOfViewPodcast
I second that...
Jason X is the worst IMO and Jason goes to hell
I love the gore in jason goes to hell
Its definitely low on my list but I think I'd probably choose to watch it over Jason Goes to Hell which is my least favorite. To me the first eight Paramount films are kind of all goofy cheesy horror fun even though they aren't all equal in terms of quality. The New Line era is where the franchise lost me.
You think this bad wait until Jason Goes To Hell lol, great review Cody, I don't dislike this movie as much as you did but I agree with some your points about the one note characters & the weird young Jason who isn't deformed then he is & then isn't, the toxic waste was a good way kill Jason but seeing that kid at end was fucking stupid, why not show young Jason but with his deformed look & then show him fading away meaning Jason is dead & his spirit finally at peace, toxic waste eats away Jasons flesh but doesn't burn his boxer shorts?
Time & budget restraints hampered the quality of the movie, Paramount were embarrassed by this franchise so didn't give it the respect it deserved, these films have a huge fanbase but instead of increasing the budgets & just letting directors bring there vision to screen Paramount cut the budgets & then if that ain't bad enough had the MPAA up there ass.
If you ever get the chance Cody check out Crystal Lake Memories Blu ray, it's a mammoth Friday The 13th Documentary that deals with the entire franchise & interviews cast & crew of each movie, definitely worth getting.
Oh and the guy who Jason beats up in the coffee shop is Ken Kirzinger who played Jason in Freddy Vs Jason, Kane must had a premonition about his future in the role lol.
JGTH is bad don’t get me wrong, but JTM is MUUUUCH worse!
I like this movie, but I do agree with all the flaws in this film. Thanks for reviewing the F13 series
I don't like it, for me the flaws just sink it, they're so unforgiveable stupid, it's like almost every choice they made was the wrong one.
This movie is a guilty pleasure for me. This was not only my first Friday The 13th, but my first horror film as well. I realize that its bad, but to me its a "so bad its good" kind of movie that I will always have nostalgia for.
I’m honestly not 100 percent sure how they’d even have a good story if he really was in NY because logically I feel like eventually he’d be out numbered if not by citizens but at least by cops or FBI agents.
Yeah but I like the city I thinks it's a nice changr of pace
The real shame is the writers didn't even try; Hollywood just slapped something together.
Yep they sure did
If they got the budget to actually shoot in New York it could have been good but alas this is the trash we got. 😓
Craig Norrie So if you don't have a budget to film in Manhattan, don't put Jason in Manhattan lol
I appreciated him smashing the girl with the guitar.
@AOW BatThor Slap nuts!
@ARC_ Cowboy Club lol
This movie is was bad but the soundtrack was really good
Yeah it was decent
Who was on the soundtrack?
The soundtrack is amazing
I've always loved this one mostly because it's so 80s and awesome kills I'll admit the acting is terrible lol but overall Kane will forever be the only true Jason voorhees above all else
Kane Hodder says that one of the most fun parts of his tenure as Jason were the scenes in Times Square. He says that spectators were lined up and down the block watching the filming and he didn't want to take off the mask to destroy their illusion of Jason. He said that every once in awhile he'd turn his head and look at them and watch them all go crazy.
According to an interview in Fangoria Magazine (August 1989), Kane Hodder vomited on cue in the final scene after drinking several pitchers of water. This was not a special effect.
Despite the nature of the film and adverse filming conditions, Kane Hodder provided several moments of levity which were appreciated by the cast. Following several death scenes, for example, once director Rob Hedden called "cut," Hodder would do a brief disco dance in full Jason costume and make-up making the cast laugh.
Rob Hedden originally wrote more of the movie to be set in New York. He had written scenes at Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. But despite the fact that this film had the highest budget of a Friday the 13th movie at the time ($5 million), Paramount told him that there wasn't enough money to film so many scenes in New York, so he was forced to rewrite the film and spend more time on the cruise ship;
at around 1h 28 mins) In the diner the man Jason throws into the mirror is Ken Kirzinger who would go on to play Jason in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Kirzinger also doubles as Jason in a few brief shots in this film.
At 100 minutes this is the longest running time of the Friday The 13th films.
Many of the actors pointed out to themselves a plot hole earlier in the filming of the movie: they wondered how the ship got out of Crystal Lake and into the Atlantic Ocean. Since most of them were just happy to be in a film they didn't bring it up to the producers or director. Actor Vincent Craig Dupree was quoted in an interview about the plot hole saying "this damn boat could have come from the Sahara Desert and gotten into the Atlantic". "I don't care, I'm not gonna challenge the concept".
After this film's disappointing results at the box-office, Paramount decided to sell the rights to the Jason Voorhees character (though not the Friday the 13th film series) to New Line Cinema. This makes "Jason Takes Manhattan" the last feature produced by Paramount until the 2009 remake Friday the 13th (2009), which was possible because they still had the rights to the first eight movies. New Line released only three other sequels (Jason Goes to Hell (1993), Jason X (2001) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003)) in between.
at around 55 mins) In the scene where Jason reaches through the porthole and grabs Rennie, Jensen Daggett was reportedly really terrified. Her face was just inches from a large and very sharp piece of glass that had become stuck in the window frame and the actor who played Jason was (unknowingly) pulling her toward it.
In the original script, when Jason makes it to the dock, a dog starts barking at him and he kicked it. Kane Hodder, who was playing Jason, felt that kicking the dog was going too far so the scene was dropped.
Due to negative feedback from fans and director Rob Hedden himself, as the film wasn't what he wanted it to be, he has repeatedly apologized to any fans who were disappointed by the film, such as in the Blu-ray and DVD audio commentary, and has since disowned the film. The next films (produced by another studio) also conveniently ignore the events of this movie.
Of the female leads (all the girls are supposed to be graduated from high school), only Jensen Daggett was one of the few actresses who was actually a teenager and was 19 years old at the time of shooting.
During production many of the cast and crew began calling the movie "Jason Takes Vancouver." This is because Vancouver doubled for New York in various scenes due to budgetary reasons, as Paramount refused to budget the extensive filming locations in New York. Except for two days of filming in Times Square, all of the scenes in the docks, sewer, alleys, and the diner were filmed in Vancouver.
The original posters for the film featured Jason ripping through an "I Love NY" poster. In the first poster Jason is holding a bloody knife which was cleaned in a second poster for fear that the blood was too graphic. Both posters were dropped following a complaint from the New York Tourism Committee.
The only Friday the 13th film to have a blooper reel on DVD and Blu-Ray.
at around 1h 24 mins) In the subway, when Jason is chasing Rennie and Sean, Sean pulls the emergency brake to knock Jason back. On the poster to right of Sean sprawled in graffiti are the words "Jason Lives," which is the subtitle of the sixth 'Friday the 13th' film: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
In keeping with series tradition, a David Bowie song, "Ashes to Ashes", was used as the movie's fake title. This working title was used while filming in New York City to avoid fan interruptions, and was also used in the script to prevent auditioning actors from knowing and revealing what film they were making. In the fake-titled script, Jason was renamed Ethan.
(at around 1h 10 mins) Vincent Craig Dupree actually cut his hand in the phone booth when Jason shatters the glass around him.
Peggy Hedden, the New York waitress, is the sister of the film's director Rob Hedden.
Feature film debut of actress Kelly Hu, who plays Eva. She is the first Asian character in the series.
During the opening credits featuring New York City's Time Square a huge Batman (1989) poster is clearly visible. Filming of these scenes took place during the promotional campaign of Tim Burton's first Batman film, starring Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton.
The cruise ship is named Lazarus, which is the name of a biblical character who was brought back from the dead, just like Jason comes back from the dead.
The studio was looking for a Canadian actor to play Jason for the role. Ken Kirzinger was considered to play Jason. Kane Hodder was determined to convince Paramount to hire him again but to his surprise, they felt he wouldn't be interested to reprise his role. Ken would instead play Kane's stunt double in the movie and eventually would replace Kane in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Canadian makeup artist Bill Terezakis also worked on both movies as well.
Many fans disliked Jason's unmasking in this as it was deemed unconvincing and unintimidating.
One of only three Friday the 13th movies not to be scored by Harry Manfredini.
Both the debut theatrical feature film directed by Rob Hedden as well as being Hedden's first produced cinema movie screenplay.
The dog Toby is named after a dog the director once had.
Rennie's dog Toby is a Border Collie
Scott Reeves is another soap star in a Friday The 13th film (Y&R) and is married in real life to fellow soap star Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton on DAYS) who for many years before meeting Scott, dated Tom Fridley (Cort in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)).
The flaregun Charles uses is a Webley & Scott No. 1 Mk. III.
The disco club scene where Eva is killed by Jason on the cruise ship was a leftover scene from the original script, where this scene would take place in a glitzy New York Nightclub instead.
The film and its characters don't reach New York until the last half hour into the runtime.
(at around 48 mins) This is the first movie in the series where Jason kills one of his victims by strangulation.
Body count: 20. Jim Miller, Suzi Donaldson, JJ Barrett, Boxing Guy, Tamara Mason, First Officer, Admiral Robertson, Ship Crew Member, Wayne Webber, Eva Watanabe, Miles Wolfe, Deck Hand, Holmes, JoJo, Julius Gaw, Police Officer, Colleen Van Duesen, Charles McCullough, Bartender and Sewer Worker oh, and the whole graduating class, too.
The prologue of the film foreshadows all the places that Jason will chase the teenagers: downtown with the gang members, the diner, the alley with the drug addicts, and the subway.
BTW! 10,000 subs! Great job Cody!
The rock kill is still one of my all time favorite kills
Your positives were right on about this otherwise horrible film. Loved the reaction from the gang to seeing Jasons's face, Kane was amazing as always and as goofy as it is I loved Jason seeing his own face on that billboard for hockey.
Every slasher movie minus Halloween has that one movie that pisses me off and in Friday the 13th it's the next one. Jason goes to hell is up there with Freddy's dead and seed of chunky to me.
Josh Perkins Yep
Josh Perkins Halloween has part 5 and I HATE Tina with an undying passion.
I'd say 5 is the weakest in the Halloween series but it didn't ruin the franchise for me.
Josh Perkins No, it didn't. But Halloween: Resurrection did it.
Gotta say ur reviews have been absolutely spot on Cody! Oh and what the hell was up with teleporting Jason??
Dude that annoyed the fuck out of me and I forgot to mention it
Also congratulations on 10k subs
So you don't like the movie it's your opinion that's fine me on the other hand I like the movie and I love the look of Jason this time around personally I think it's one of the best looks in the serious heck the reason I'm only saying one of it's because I haven't seen the rest of the movies yet but I did see this one and I love the look of Jason it's the best look I've seen I've always liked the undead looking look for Jason I like when his bones are showing and his skin looks decayed in dry up of its natural color I like that Jason the more Undead looking one as a matter of fact it's one of the reasons why I like Jason so much because he's Undead he's a Dead Man Walking walking around Crystal Lake looking for his next victim and it's always been cool to me it really gets the atmosphere going like just to know this Undead man walking is out there somewhere I do admit looking back at it it didn't make a whole lot of sense for him to turn into a kid especially a normal-looking one like that was kind of weird but I was little when I saw this movie so I didn't pay too much attention to it as I'm doing now so the final scene does look a bit unusual but I like The Kills in the humor something crazy that baffled me is that when I saw this I always thought I said Jason Goes to New York I never knew it said Jason Goes to Manhattan I could have swore it said Jason Goes to New York but anyway that's a completely different topic I personally like the end where they put acid on his face and you can see his face you can see his bones his eyes appear to be missing his skin color dried up like I said I love designs like that for Jason but hey it's your opinion and I respect that thanks for reading my comment
Fr i watch it my first time and tht it wax good and that girl was a good actor it was actually good because jason did not quite nigga was following them everywere
Punctuation is your friend. I know it’s a RUclips comment, but put some fucking periods and commas in, for Christ’s sake, you lazy fuck!
Looking forward towards your review of Jason goes to hell lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the look of Jason in this movie.
He looks cool
Why does the term juicy Jason sound hilarious to me.?!😂😂😂😂
I laughed at that too :D
Juicy Jason Visits NY
Bruh you aren't the only one!! "Juicy Jason" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was the first film I saw form the series as a 7 year old. Gave me nightmares, but started my love of horror movies. Still bad, but a memory I'll never forget.
Jason Takes An Hour And A Half Boat Ride To Vancouver
This movie should've been called, Friday the 13th: Shipwreck, not Jason Takes Manhattan.
I have a soft spot for this one as it's the first F13 movie I saw on TV as a kid in the early 90s. There are several cool moments, IMO. The opening credits/song. The little head turn that Jason does during the dance floor kill scene. When Jason sees the hockey billboard. The Times Square boombox and diner scenes. The sewer scene when the worker tells them that toxic waste floods the sewers every night at midnight. Obviously, the decapitation by uppercut. I agree the leads are weak in this one, but the late night b-movie vibe is on point.
Imagine Jason becoming an urban vigilante in the style of Rorshach, Travis Bickle, Bill Foster, Paul Kersey, or The Punisher. Or, yeah, The Toxic Avenger (but without the fun-loving, happy-go-lucky attitude).
They couldn't seem to remember which side of Jason's face is supposed to be malformed. It's supposed to be the right side of his face that's messed up, but he sustains a whole lot of injuries to the left side of his face and head (ax to the temple, machete to the side of his head, boat propeller to the side of his face). So if the left side represents his "human" side, and the right side represents his "monster" side, having most of the damage be to the left side could symbolically represent the destruction of the "human" side of his soul so only the "monster" side remains.
Also, the box art mostly looks good, but it has one detail that's lame. It's the way he's holding that knife! Why can't movie people figure out how to hold knives properly?! Every time they get their mitt on a single-edge knife (whether it's a combat knife or a kitchen knife), they always hold it "Michael Myers" style. That is, using an "ice pick" grip technique with a single-edge blade and with the sharp edge facing in instead of out. The sharp edge should face out, not in. Skallagrim would back me up on that. In fact, he's talked about it before. Holding a knife like that is one of the ways you can tell the difference between a competent knife-fighter and a thug who brandishes a knife as an intimidation tactic.
Note: Movie people also leave folding or collapsible stocks in their storage position because they can't "gun" competently to save their lives.
I actually love this movie. It was one of my first Friday movies I ever seen so it has a spot in my heart. Love the way it starts. Good music in this one. Love it except the kid Jason that shit sucked
Ahh like this one to
Great review bro and 2 vids in 1 day...Sweet
Thanks man and Ill check out one of your vids in a bit.
Good job on 10k subs
How do you not mention the most bizarrely hilarious part? When Jason gets the acid on his face and let's out that ..... Noise. ... Scream. After not making much of a single noise in the entire franchise that is the noise he makes. How do you not bust out laughing at that part?
My alternative subtitle for this movie: "Escape from Crystal Lake."
The boxer scene is my positive as well in this poor friday movie
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan was awesome
Haven't seen the other Jason movies you reviewed, so I was waiting for you to review this! Imma go on a Jason marathon during halloween.
That boxing kill is just a ripoff from Killer klowns from outer.
Dude spot fucking on with your opinions! Love your honesty man! Great review and congrats on 10k!
Thanks man
I like this movie! All the cheese a man could axe for!
I’m with you, man.
While I still believe that Jason goes to hell is the worst Friday the 13th movie, I completly agree with the statement that Jason takes Manhattan is one of the worst slashers ever made.
I think the sauna rock kill is underrated, actually. That kill would hurt the most, I think. It's also one of the most sadistic kills Jason has ever pulled. Taking a very blunt object and shoving it through the chest and really pushing it down further and further? Ouch. The rest of the movie is kinda meh though
Maybe if they renamed it to "Jason TAKES Royal Caribbean" it wouldn't be so misleading! Lol
I thought the series was over at this point. great review!
I actually really loved this movie it’s my second favorite in the franchise because it’s so different then him killing teens at a camp. I liked the characters especially the rocker chick and I liked the main girl and her boyfriend. And I love Kane hodder. I love the way Jason looked in this film as well. Honestly some parts were really bad and poorly done but overall I love it.
Exactly im not sure why it's so hated at least its a different change of pace
@@MINI-MYERS because the kills were butchered by the mpaa and the first 35 minutes was boring lol
Different doesn't mean good. The woods/summer camp was the perfect setting at night for a slasher like this. Characters were isolated, remote and help was far away. The sight of him walking around New York is so jarring and just throws up a million and one questions. 😳. I did like the main character but the rest just felt like clichés. The bitch, the geek, the rocker, the pompous adult. 2d and lazy. It looses the look of the original films too where everything was generally quite brown and muddy colour wise with a distinct lighting style, in part 8 though its all lit with these awful garish neon lights, like it's Batman and Robin or something.
One of the worst films ever of any genre ... truly awful ... it's as though some took some blank paper, wiped their arse on it, saw the shit and called it a script
I liked this review of Friday the 13th part 8 Jason takes Manhattan it was alright it really was.
I’m just curious is the city on the poster even New York City? I’m not sure that it is. I guess if they really wanted to be accurate it should’ve been Vancouver lol
I can watch it sometimes for nostalgia, it was one of the first ones I saw when it was fairly new.... around ‘90.... but god it’s bad. You hit the nail on the head. It could have been so much more. I still love the cheezy late 80s theme song though. If they had done it right this movie could have been wonderful, that’s the sad part. The kills are awful and the ending is the drizzling shits. Love your reviews man, keep it up
It should be called Jason goes on a cruise
the few things I liked about this. j.j and her guitar, Kane hodder, the intro music, decapitation shot, and when jason lifts up his mask at those punks. 😃😃
Awesome 2 Friday the 13th reviews in 1 day
I’d love it if you review and rank the movies from the Frankenstein franchise
I saw this in the Theater. I was hyped because I grew UP in New York City. So I was like "Okay, let's see this." Besides him knocking dude's head off, to me there wasn't much. Ok, Times Square, great, but I was looking for real New York City cause I lived in New York City. I saw none of that. As a New Yorker, I was offended. Yes, the movie was not that good. I'm an optimistic person but this movie was not good. I agree, this is probably the worst Friday The 13th film installment. Awesome, my home city. Nah, this movie was not good, you're good.
Btw, are you going to review New Year's Evil or Fear Clinic, or Happy Death Day..... Some less known horror movies but i would apreciate if you'll stick with 70's-90's one
The cover art and the 'Jason in New York' aesthetic that you mentioned are just about the only things I like about this movie. I wish it would've taken place in NY through most of the runtime, that would've been interesting to see.
This movie: *exists*
Paramount: ight imma head out
I'll explain the ending to you: The reason he was shown as a kid was cause Rennie saw one last vision of Jason as a kid and Sean actually saw the corpse of Jason when he was hit with the toxic. Maybe they did that because of the MPAA or just to show her last vision of Jason as a kid.
Ur description is the exact way I feel watching Halloween 456789
Wait what lol
Yeah this is one of my favorite movies. But when you break it down I could see why you didn't like it.
i still enjoy it it was one of the first in the series i watched it's still diffidently not my favorite but it's allright
Its my 3rd fav
My Friday the 13th ranking: 13.Jason goes to hell: the final Friday (1993) 12.The remake (2009) 11 Part 5: A new Beginning (1985) 10.Jason X 9.Part 8:Jason Takes Manhattan 8.Part 7: The new Blood 7.Freddy vs. Jason 6.Never hike alone 5.Friday the 13th (1980) 4.Friday the 13th, Part two 3.Friday the 13th, part 3-D 2. Part Six 1. Part 4: the Final Chapter
My personal oppinion is that the movie is a missed opportunity! If they would have given Jason a more decent look, some more likeable characters and maybe just half-hour focusing on the boat-trip, would have been much better!
Good Review Cody as always.
I gonna be honest but I would say that Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is my guilty pleasure in this Franchise (besides Jason X).
Kane Hodder really took hold of the role in this movie as Jason Voorhees. The other actors are AWFUL in this one but it didn't bothered me as much as in Part 7. The Kills are alright.
The only thing that bothered me about this entry is that the title is the most misleading title ever. You can rename this movie in "Jason takes a boat trip to Manhattan" because the last 10 minutes of this movie is when Jason finally sets a foot on Manhattan Island.
All in all I was quite entertained by this movie but I know it's not a good a movie. It didn't make me angry or pissed me off like you Cody. Jason goes to Hell on the other hand...
Jason's overall look was okay, but the face was awful.
They obviously couldn't think of a way of getting him from crystal lake to New York. They thought they cracked it I guess with the boat trip but they didn't realise you can sail from a lake to an ocean?
Can't a lake be attached to the ocean?
For me, this was the last film that truly felt like a actual Friday the 13th film. Sure, it's the weakest out of the original 8 Paramount entries, but the ones made under the New Line banner felt like big budget fan films
So, Camp Crystal Lake was supposed to take place in either New Jersey or Up State, NY (Can't remember which), so it wouldn't be unheard of for the boat ride to New York City, which wouldn't be very far away at all. Also, Jason DID leave the camp at the beginning of Part 2. Remember, he followed that surviving girl from Part 1 to her house in the city and killed her in her own house when Part 2 started (head in the fridge scene).
Great review.
I enjoy part 7 as a guilty pleasure plus it has my favorite look for Jason. The thing is the film hasn't aged well especially in a marathon watch next to Jason Lives. I can put on part 7 and be entertained but part 8 is absolute fucking garbage. Almost the worst Friday film for me personally. Terrible
8 was actually better then 7 I don't know why people dislike 8
@@omarionjunior1158 the title for part 8 is Jason takes Manhattan and guess what? He doesn’t take Manhattan, he takes a long ass boat ride and I could mention other issues like mediocre to lame kills (only good kill was when Jason punched the dude’s head off), lame characters, lame jokes, little boy swamp Jason, and worst face for Jason (his face looks like a muppet left out in the sun)
Am I right in saying that the guy Jason throws into the mirror in the diner towards the end is the guy who played Jason in Freddy vs Jason
i often wondered if that ending was somehow supposed to harken to the dream/hallucination endings to parts 1 through 3, but there just never was enough solid evidence to support the idea.
What I find stupid is that Jason only ended up on New York because he got onto the boat only to investigate why it was on his lake and to kill everyone on it for disturbing him and it set sail while he was on it since they didn't know he was on the boat with them until later on.
This movie is really bad but I enjoy watching it idk why
His clothes grew back in this movie
They had him moving around too fast also. When the girl is looking around in the ballroom he was standing in every direction. Then when the guy was climbing that pole, Jason watching him climb the next thing you know he's pulling the guy down..
Good ol' greasy Jason
Now I’m a real horror fan and I am a huge fan of these movies but anyway thanks for reviewing.
Hey there is one other positive sence when we get a brief Jason vs Jason with Ken Kurzinger being the cook who gets thrown into the mirror.
I thought it was a interesting point to have eeveryone trapped on a boat with a killer. With no escape, even though it isnt what the title promised I still prefer it over 9 and 10
The reason it doesn't affect the continuity is because part 8 is not canon Jason Goes to Hell Jason X and so on ignores part 8
I agree, this is definitely a weaker installment. I’d rank the movies from worst to best as:
12. Jason X - Even with the awesome liquid nitrogen kill, I don’t like Sci-Fi at all and I don’t think that most of the jokes landed well for me (4/10)
11. Jason Goes to Hell- Really love the kills in this movie, great gore, but I really don’t like the Jason’s soul possessing others take. (5/10)
10. Jason Takes Manhattan- Honestly, this movie isn’t too bad, it just doesn’t have good kills other than Julius’s kill and the Boxer’s in the sauna. I also don’t like the child Jason hallucinations. (6/10)
9. The New Blood- Really think this could’ve been a great movie, just the kills are too watered down. Still kind of like it though. (7/10)
8. Friday the 13th 2009- I think the kills are phenomenal, and I used to hate this because I didn’t recognize the great kills just because of how much the characters annoyed me. I’m sure this will be much higher upon a rewatch, but for now (7/10)
7. Freddy vs. Jason - Even though, I really like this movie, it just doesn’t hit as hard as other installments (8/10)
6. Part 2- Yes, this is lower on my list only because the kills aren’t super great other than Mark’s I love Ginny though, so that’s why it is where it is (8/10)
5. A New Beginning- Despite not having Jason, I really like this move . I really enjoy the kills and The Who Done-it aspect. (8/10j
4. Part 3 - I don’t know why, but I really enjoy part 3. I don’t like the 3D that much, but the kills were very fun and despite the “quality acting” I love this movie. (9/10)
3. The Final Chapter- I’ll get hated for this, but Part 4 isn’t as great to me as everyone says it is. Still an amazing slasher with great kills, but I don’t care for the characters other than Tommy and Trish (9
2. Jason Lives- Great kills, great humor, great characters. Easily the best sequel (10/10)
1. Friday the 13th 1980- I know this is an unpopular opinion, but this is my favorite Friday film. Watching this made Friday instantly become ,y favorite slasher series because of Mrs. Voorhees decapitation. Also the other kills were great as well. (10/10)
And if you have time (I know you don't seem to be into reading scripts, since I've offered them to you and you don't seem to have an interest, but...), I think you'd like the thriller I've written, called Dead Enough. It's about a former hitman who steals a job from his old boss, for a personal vendetta, and ends up having to fight his way out of that situation. There's a major twist in the second half that makes you look at the entire first half in a different light, and a killer "fuck you" in the final shot. I'd be interested in your thoughts, if you ever have a couple hours to read it. It's 117 pages (scripts equal to about a page per minute of movie). You can read it, here: drive.google.com/file/d/0BzsI7dJGSpBUWkh5ZTUzaDA2dkk/view?usp=sharing
Agreed. New Blood is Citizen Kane (Hodder) compared to Jason (Eventually) Takes Manhattan.
When truth or dare comes out to theaters can u review it. Please and thank u
I am glad another reviewer dislikes this movie as much as me! This is my least favorite out of the original Friday series!
Man I remember when This movie hit theater's in the summer of 1989 and man after part 7 I want to see this so bad especially because of the name of the title alone. I remember being so jealous because my sister called me and said that she saw it. What false advertising and what a disappointment.
I think this was his best performance as Jason
