If we take an inquiry approach when the child is 6, we should start with the sentence, break it down into words and then break it down to the sounds of those letters. When you show a child a car, has it ever occurred to you to show him separately first the wheels, then the bumpers, then the doors, Etc? No, of course not. You would show him the whole and say to him: this is a car.
