I was just thinking back to the start of every class I've met in the past 20+ years. What stood out to me is that, on that first day (at least in the first minutes), students are usually pretty calm and quiet. It's the tone that's set from that moment that'll determine how the rest of your time together will go. It's not impossible to get it back if you start without clear expectations, but it is way more challenging than doing it from Day 1. This is great advice for anyone who has any doubt that you do have the right - and the responsibility, as Tom says - to 'run the room'.

6:27 *you’re always under the auspicious of the teacher’s authority. But you can always take a step back as they become more autonomous, which, often sixth formers can be, especially if they’ve been with you for several years. But you never take your hands off the wheel* - a different perspective on autonomy: ruclips.net/video/iUgNbWkcnHs/видео.html

In order to be in charge, teachers need the authority to run the room - they need sanctions.
