- Listen to Jon Rahm discuss a penalty with rules official during the 2018 PGA Championship. He was assessed a penalty after accidentally stepping on his golf ball in the Bellerive rough. He still ended up making par despite the penalty.

That's weird, bevause every time I play with my buddies and kick my ball towards the hole I have never once got a penalty.
Brent Bush lmao, I use the Foot Joy wedge when I’m in a bad chipping shot position.
@@dylant4737 that's gold lmao
Same
They try to give me one but I say I didnt see it
The ole foot wedge.
These are the values that makes this game great. I applaud his integrity and respect for the game. 👍🏻
It all became a little unravelled unfortunately, when he then tried to wriggle out of the penalty for the lame excuse that his ball wasn't marked. He thought too, that mentioning to the official that he didn't move the ball might have merit as to why he shouldn't incur a penalty?
Funny that he didn't know where his ball was, but knew that he didn't move it?
10/10 times Patrick reed wouldn’t have called himself out
Credit to him for calling it on himself! Nobody would have known except for maybe his caddy.
He would get DQ’ed if found out later on. He chose the safer route.
Teufel Hunden It's not about safety, it's about integrity.
You don’t think the entire crowd new exactly where the ball was? That’s normal procedure not integrity
100 people around him saw it.
Teufel Hunden Yup there are cameras everywhere and he hasn’t a clue who is or isn’t watching
I can’t stand it when people don’t find my golf ball for me.
His conduct is the gold medal or first prize for honesty & integrity... irrespective of what position he completed the tournament 🏆
Although, he was certainly trying to wriggle out of the penalty, for the lame excuse that no one had marked where his ball was.
He said he didn’t move it but he didn’t know where it was before lol
Man he handled that well. Good for him. Gained more respect for him after that.
Apart from trying to wriggle out of the penalty, for the lame excuse that no one had marked where his ball was.
@@sailorman8668 John Rham is a nice guy . Shut your pie hole .
@@soulerflare7 I'm not saying he's not a nice guy, but his childish whining about his ball not being marked, was a lame excuse to use to try and wriggle out of the penalty.
His caddy was clearly losing patience with this needless pontificating as well.
Funny that you should mention 'pie hole', considering that John is more than a little overweight, he should probably 'shut his pie hole', lol.
@@sailorman8668 hehehe
Did you lose some for him when he cheated on his wife
I like when he said no one showed him where his ball is. No one shows me either when I golf. haha
mikcall54 you don't play in majors "haha"
dude hes like 2 yards off the fairway and couldnt see his ball in the rough. sorry but in club play, I'm never calling a penalty on myself like that. getting a worse lie after stepping on it is penalty enough.
I thought the same thing
Your 110 would have been a 109, so what
Your not a pro “haha”
Rules official got it mostly right, but he did make a small mistake. Rahm was entitled to clean the ball before dropping it.
Wade Williams that is correct, he is entitled to clean the ball. Not sure why the rules official wouldn’t know that.
Yup I caught that too when he asked if he can clean the ball, and the official said no. I was like ??? what the .... ? You are entitled to clean the ball anytime you are penalized, and dropping. You are not entitled to clean the ball if it is a free drop situation.
@schylder - that is not correct. You are entitled to clean the ball in almost all situations, except when identifying (cleaned only the extent necessary), to determine whether unfit for play, or when lifting a ball that is assisting or interfering. See Rule 21.
Correct. You may clean your ball anytime you put your hand on it except for the three scenarios outlined in rule 21
Rules can also be local.
That's why I don't compete. I play to be outside on grass. If I don't like where the ball is I put it where it makes me happy.
Only sport where the player tell officials that he might have done something wrong. Total honesty and sportsmanship.
You're dead right. Soccer players would do well to watch this.
Still got par ⚡️ I would’ve had a snowman ⛄️ 🤣
It should have been marked when it’s ankle deep rough
And being a pro he should have waited for it to be marked.
Per one of my other replies, note that there are two marshals nearby (@ 0.40), but they do not have wire flag markers. For some reason, they don’t use these at the PGA Championship, although they are used for most other PGA Tour events. So there is nothing for marshals to use; they can point if the caddie or player asks them.
And that's how a professional and a gentlemn monitors their own game. 👍
It wasn't a good look however, to then lamely try and wriggle out of the penalty, using the laughable excuse that his ball wasn't marked.
Sailor Man 75% or more of these tournaments have people specifically marking the balls in the rough. In this case this tournament 100% had workers to mark balls in the rough. It’s not like he made a huge deal about it. He just was asking like every other player on tour does.
Me: I ''accidentally'' step on my friends golf balls all the time.
Penalty: The ''rules officials'' seem to sneakily undo the strap holding my golf bag to the power cart. CRASH!
I love golf but some of the rules are so asinine, no wonder slow play is a problem
This particular isn’t asinine at all. He’s not supposed to kick his ball, even if it didn’t move.
Jerry v this isnt why play is slow. Never have i seen someone stand on their ball, and they rarely need a ruling during a round. Slow play is caused by people taking too long over shots trying to calculate every variable when it is impossible and they end up hitting a bad shot anyway. If you have a high handicap then just walk up, select a club and hit the ball. Play has even slowed down a bit since the new rule of leaving the pin in. Some old guys in my club want to leave the pin in even on 3 foot putts which means we have to go pick up the flag and put it back in before they can putt. It’s dumb. It was quicker before when everyone had to putt with the flag out.
@@markdelej why dont you just have everyone putt with the stick in? Odds are it'll help you.
Micky M. Yeah either a rule where it is always in or always out. But a choice of either in or out sometimes slows down play. Personally i dont like putting with it in. The ball does rattle the cup like when it is out. All the putts on tv that i have grown up watching for tiger to win a major for example had the flag out so my instinct is when the flag is in it isnt proper. Now i could adapt if they made a rule, but i just think flag out was more fun and quicker sometimes. Tbf practice rounds have sped up because people just leave it in all the time. But tournaments i feel have slowed down
You're telling me. I took a class on the rules and they are so dry and very repeating. Book is about 90 pages of crap. They really need to dumb it down to half of that.
I have watched a lot of golf and this is the first time I've seen a player step on their ball. Nice par though!
As of 2019 accidentally touching the ball during the search is no longer a penalty. If accidentally moved the ball is replaced to where it was, or estimate. It may be cleaned to establish if it is cut or cracked and to the extent to ID the ball. The drop was done incorrectly, and if played with out correction .A penalty stroke is assessed
Great save. I would of been pissed and melted. Actually I could of been in best mood and still folded like a lawn chair.
With 100's of spectators and pgatour fore-caddies all over the courses nowadays why did someone not tell him he was approaching where the ball came to rest.
Another thing is that the rough at some of these tournaments is so high that the ball can literally be buried under a sea of green. The only way to then find it within the time limit, is to step on it by accident.
Then the player gets a penalty because the course conditions completely hid the ball from the player, not to mentions someone could have said hey it stopped in this general area.
Seems 100% ridiculous and out of order.
Have you ever been to a tournament? Those guys rarely look at the spectators, or listen to what they have to say. But I get you point
Same conditions for the other guys, so was totally fair. If you don't like the rules, petition to change them or don't play. At least he called it on himself instead of punching someone like in other sports.
Poor Jon
Penalised for being honest and just looking for his ball
this was great seeing & hearing how much interaction there was with his caddy, i was really surprised.
Where are the marshalls marking the balls?? What are they they for if they aren't helping out.
He is 2 yards off of the fairway they dont mark every ball. Sounds like he was trying to blame someone else for his own mistake.
PM the rough is so deep that the ball just hides I know there are marshalls there marking driving distance and reporting the data. The players are trying to win majors not searching up and down the rough
There are a few marshalls on each hole specifically for this job, it's not a hard one, it's on them. No big deal anyway he's doing fine.
I ask myself the same question every time I play...
Marking the location of the ball is NOT the responsibility of a Marshall at the PGA. It may be at other events but not the PGA. Marshalls are there for crowd management.
Discuss? Not at all, he has been extremely honest.
And of course he could have cleaned it up
Chances are on the PGA a camera might catch you. So better to be honest than being DQ at the end of the round
Nice to see all the players wearing the yellow ribbons for jarrod Lyle.

@conor clarke an australian who played on the pga tour .
He had had cancer 3 times and beat it twice but not the third time.
@conor clarke no problem 👍
He was told he could not clean his ball before he took a penalty drop. Correct me if I am wrong as I believe that you are allowed to clean your ball under a penalty drop rule?
Replacing a ball under rule 9.2a outside of the putting green does not grant you the right to clean the ball. Penalty or not.
Under current rules I'd say you wouldn't get the penalty since it was accidental. (Exception 2 under rule 9.4b)
Jordan speith got to clean his off
@@keganlafevers419 Spieth was getting relief from standing water. Rahm was dropping after he incurred a penalty. There's a difference
Idk check rule 21, I think he was allowed to clean his ball becuz he was playing a penalty shot
All those people in the gallery and no one said anything? Rahm is a class act, DGAF!
Honest man fair play
2018 rule is a penalty. 2019 Rule, No penalty and replace it in the original spot (Estimate if original spot is not 100% certain).
if the ball had clearly moved there is a penalty.. touching a ball is not a penalty unless it is known to have moved.. he said it didnt move..
@@Jammin6796 Why was he penalised then?
@@Jpgundarun neither him or the ref interpreted the rule properly.. thats why you always ask for a second ref or consult the other player in your group.or actually have the book with you and look up the rule.. they were just guessing it was a penalty... if your looking for a ball and touch it but it doesnt clearly move then theres no penalty. if he had seen the ball and then touched it, it would be a penalty, but not when your looking for it. only in water or buried in sand can you "move a ball while searching for it".... once you find a ball you can move it to identify it if your not sure its your ball.. those were the rules before the changes last year..
@@Jammin6796 Why did pros like Phil Mickelson send in officials to look for a lost ball in rough then if was not a penalty before 2019?
He should have used the old foot wedge LOL I know a couple friends that's a key club in their bag
Pa Beastdro “friends” huh... 😂
@@pootube50 ya.. "friends" they love the foot wedge .
He pulled out a wood and addressed the ball to knock the grass down lol
cant wait for this rule to change in 2019.
Change how?
After 1 January 2019, No penalty of you accidentally move your ball when searching for it.
So if you were to "accidently" move it back to the fairway while looking for it in the rough, then..............
AKWolf1 haha. Will be no penalty for accidentally moving it, but you'll still have to put it back. Two stroke penalty if you play it from the place it moved to.
He didn't accidentally step on his ball. That implies he knew where it was and then stumbled and hit the ball with this foot. All he did was step normally and there was an unseen ball under his foot. There are some conditions where the only way you can actually find your ball in the grass is to try to feel for it with your foot. I know it's a rule but please.
Whenever I can't find my tee shot, I just drop a ball and declare that a spectator or cameraman found it. 😂😂😂
Cool kid Rahm!!! With age becomes wisdom...
I played golf golf the other day. Accidentally stepped on a rake, hit two good balls....
Fortunately the rules are being simplified and little incidents like these won't be so impactful. Rahm is a fiery class act
If I am correct, under the new rules in 2019, this would not constitute a penalty.
You are correct sir. If it was by mistake you do not get a penalty.
Play enough golf and you're bound to accidentally disturb your own ball in the rough at some point. I know I have.
Someone should penalize the ref for not knowing he CAN clean his golf ball prior to any drop.
That is completely incorrect. The official (not “ref”) was correct in saying he could not clean the ball. Know the rules.
@@rm1133 New PGA rules for 2019 include no penalty for a player accidentally moving his ball while searching for it. Also, golfers can drop from a knee height now instead of the shoulder -- timely changes to some overly punitive rules. This type of scene won't be an issue from now on, thankfully.
saltdog14 I’m well aware of the new rules. They do not apply to what the comment said in regards to cleaning the ball which is what I was referring to.
@@saltdog14 this was 7 months ago
@@saltdog14 those weren't the rules at the time of the incident so it really doesn't matter
Still made par. What a g
Referee was incorrect 1:38, you can always clean the ball when it is going to be dropped. Should have people out there who know the rules. If unsure they can ask someone else. It's not like they have to make a split second decision.
Full respect
Appreciate his honesty
And did you appreciate too, his whiney childish behaviour in subsequently trying to lamely wriggle out of the penalty, for the laughable excuse that nobody marked his ball?
Sailor Man Sounds like someone doesn’t like him and is looking every hard for more ammo to hate more....lol
At least he was honest
Honesty pays.
When I golf no one tells me where my ball is John you know why?because you and your caddy are supposed to pay attention and start looking for it
Dudes one helluva good sport, thats for sure.
2020 Memorial brought me here
This is pure class.
A good thing this rule has been changed to no penalty if you accidentally step on your ball when searching for it.
I work on a golf course... I never see guys getting a penalty for moving their ball.. LOL.. in fact most call birdie..
i almost commented about shoulder height drop 😂 but that was 2018. 2019 its knee high drop
And touching the ball while searching for it is no penalty anymore.
It's still not shoulder height. For some reason they always dropped it from above that.
As much as he tends to overreact this isn’t fair. He didn’t do anything wrong. For all we know this ends up costing him the win, or thousands of dollars at the very least.
Rules of golf state that you or your caddie are not allowed to touch the ball when it is in play or you incur a one stroke penalty. That's pretty much the only thing he did wrong.
Matt Andersen but do you not agree that when you have no idea where your ball is and you accidentally step on it that giving a penalty shot is a little absurd?
Yeah I agree, but the guys on tour are spoiled as it is with people being able to watch their ball for them and having marshal's put little flags by the ball (except in this instance of course). I have to find my ball when it goes off line and out of site and I have gotten pretty decent at it. Some of the guys on tour don't even yell fore on purpose because they hope it will hit a spectator and bounce back in to keep them in play.
If the rule says you can't cause your ball to move, it doesn't mean "only if it seems fair to fans." That said, the kinder and gentler USGA/R&A are changing this in 2019;. If you move your ball under the new rules, you simply replace it (or drop if you don't know its location).
We should set up a gofundme page to help him out. Because you know how tour pros are hard up.
The rules of golf are basically an honor system, no kudos to him for reporting an infraction. Funny how once the official got there and was told it was a one stroke penalty Rahm right away tried to blame the fact that no one was there to mark his ball. I have played golf for almost 50 years and not once have I had anyone running around the course marking my ball. It is up to you to know where your own ball went.
Too much rules and too complicated most the officials didn’t even able to memorise all of them 🤦🏻♂️
Is that one of the 2019 rule changes?
No
jace c Yeah, it is a 2019 rule change. If a player steps on their ball on accident its not a penalty anymore
Honest man
Great respect!
Tough penalty to take but he was honest to call it.
In any other sport, the player would act like he never touched the ball.
Golf is one game where the players still have respect for the game itself.
MORE OF THIS!!!!!!!! CBS, NBC, ESPN, FOX!!!!!! More of this!!!
A question for rules experts please:
If Rahm did not know where his ball was, but a member of the gallery did, and yelled "Hey John, stop! You're about to step on your ball" would that be a penalty?
No longer a penalty. If what I heard right last week that is.
Nice save for par but a player should be able to clean his or hers ball I believe.
If that were the case they would clean their ball every shot. You can't clean it until you reach the green. They would be cleaning grass off in the middle of the fairway
At least that's no longer a penalty...
Kudos to him for his integrity. Shame that if his caddy had trodden on it, no penalty and free drop. A good rule change next year to give the player the same rule as someone else looking for a lost ball as most players would never do it intentionally. Ten points for integrity, bravo 👏
Not true. Right now, if your caddie does it, it's the same as you doing it, the penalty would have been the same. Rule 18-2 that has been breached here is called ball at rest moved by Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment. Yes, great that it will change next year.
Every rule that applies to the player also applies to the caddie. Like the rule where if you hit a ball and it ricochets off a tree or other object, and hits you or your bag/buggy/cart, you get a penalty. Same as if you hit your caddie. Pretty unlucky, especially if your ball hits you in the gonads or the face.
Do I have to take a penalty if I kick my ball 50 yards forward?
Lol
Depends on who saw it.
I believe the penalty for using a foot wedge is the next round of beverages.😁
Depends if you’re the President of the United States...
No penalty for the kick at all. Two strokes pen for playing from the new position.
The rule is that, if you accidentally move your ball, you must REPLACE IT IN THE ORIGINAL POSITION, with no penalty.
That's why i like him an honest man hat's off!
Did you also 'like him' for the way he lamely tried to wriggle out of the penalty for the laughable excuse that his ball wasn't marked?
Wow he didn't go into full cranky Baby Huey mode!
Least he was honest.
I like how he gets a fairway metal to stomp down the rough and then he hits his iron. 😂 Classic Black Knight!
That would have be "improving your lie" and an additional 2 stroke penalty. Do you even play this game?
True gentleman
Just heard a guy on TV yesterday saying if you accidentally step on your ball while looking for it, you could put it back where it was with no penalty. Maybe the rules are different in the USGA from the PGA? Obviously yesterday I was watching the US Open (USGA).
Seems like the correct ruling.
No longer a penalty . You can accidentally touch it now during a search as long as it is not moved or replaced to original location.
What if he needed to identify the ball??
No good deed goes unpunished
This is obviously under the rules prior to Jan 2019. Now, under rule 7.4, the accidental moving the ball while searching for it, there is no penalty. Additionally, the Rule for dropping has changed from the procedure used here.
I thought if you are looking for your ball and step on it, or move it by mistake, then the ball has to be replaced back into it,s original position and then played with No Penalty. ...???? Answers please.
Always depends on which PGA official you get...they do try their best...but golf, like everything else in life is never going to be perfect....
Bullshit. Rules are rules. It's pretty cut and dried. At that time, if you touch your ball, it's a penalty. The fact that the oficial didn't know that the bill could be cleaned is astonishing.
FYI: With the new rules this would not be a penalty as long as you replace the ball where it was before you accidentally moved it
I didn't know Sergio had a brother... whaa whaa whaa!
Ratted himself out
I'm happy that he had Par. That would have sucked if he bogeyed.
300ld's and that ball didn't move. Credit for owning up Jon...
Did he ask of he could clean it?
My drives are magical. I hit the ball so far left that the ball recreates itself in my pocket and then telepathically controls my hand to put it in a favourable position
I think if you're a pro, you call a penalty on yourself once in awhile (when you're not on the leader board). You earn respect from your fellow competitors and fans.
Anyone else have to check the date of the video to see if he was going to get another penalty for not dropping at knee height? Lol
If he's taken a penalty and having to drop it he should have been aloud to clean it .
B M *allowed, not “aloud!!!” Good God Almighty you should seek help before posting any comments!!!
Sorry Wallace Bell I'm currently looking up English lessons on online . I apologise whole heatedly for my atrocious English spelling mistake 😔

He's also a whiney child for subsequently trying to wriggle out of the penalty for the laughable excuse that his ball wasn't marked.
On a six hundred yard par five as well, that's some par save..!
What's the worst that could happen if he didn't tell anyone? Can they disqualify you?
Very harsh if he was penalised as no marker there to show exactly where the ball was especially in a big tournament
