- It is likely that Prokofiev’s 6th symphony is the most compelling evidence of his genius. The composition’s themes of tragedy, sorrow, anger, and finally hope and joy are communicated with a proficiency rarely found in all of symphonic literature.
There's a wonderful article containing extensive commentary on this symphony:

The work shares an opus number with Beethoven's last (and possibly finest) piano sonata, and Prokofiev, who admired the piece greatly, is said to have considered dedicating this symphony to Beethoven.
0:00 - Allegro moderato
16:39 - Largo
33:32 - Vivace
Performed by the London Philharmonic

32:38 that muted trumpet melody is one of the most touching things i've ever heard. Actually the whole of the second movement is but that part especially evokes so much nostalgia
One of the greatest, if not the greatest, symphonies of the 20th century. The difference between the 5th and the 6th for me, besides their obvious differences in mood and character, is that with the 5th, which I love dearly, I don't hear new things, feel new things, discover new connections each time I confront it. It is what it is, and if you've heard it ten times you've heard it a hundred times. With the 6th, on the other hand, each listening opens up rivers of new emotions, connections, musical ingenuities. And this is what the greatest masterpieces do. They become almost different pieces each time you listen to them or perform them. A devastating, deeply moving, shattering, brilliant piece of music.
Absolutely agree. The 6th is scored in such a way that the darker colours of the orchestra are heard more, especially in the first movement, with the lower strings given prominence and in the many muted violin passages. The higher instruments are not heard until much later in the development section
You certainly have got my attention with that grand assessment. I will listen with an open mind.
I didn't like this one for years, it was the only symphony of his I was troubled with and came back to it just recently after more years and the first two movements have grown on me very much. I wonder it Bartock will ever grown on me?
@nicholasfox966 -- What's up with Parsifal in the Largo? Thanks from Acapulco!
@@steveegallo3384 Acapulco is a wonderful place.
A very remarkable piece of music. Intense, engaging, moving, and for me very enjoyable. Thanks for posting this.
Hello! I just want to share with you my Symphonic Poem! I m very inspired by russian Orquestal Music! Hope you will enjoy it ruclips.net/video/FtgOpfUirT4/видео.html
待ってましたよ。これがプロコフィエフの最高傑作です。
Prok Prok, you may be right about that Beethoven dedication, 35:39 makes a quick reference to the 9th (different opus number, I know).
Weller's performance is very good, despite his unusually slow tempo choices in the first two movements. Of recent Sixths, those by Gergiev (Mariinsky), Litton, Alsop, Gaffigan and Kitayenko are very good. Older ones by Jarvi, Rozhdestvensky, Leinsdorf, Ozawa and Ormandy are also very worthy of attention.
ssprokofiev -- "Dresden Amen"....Parsifal, right??
Сергей Сергеевич стал добрее в оценках...
That link or domain has been taken over by some bitcoin casino site. I would change that link if you have the proper domain...I don't know this symphony as well as I should....decades ago I was a bit disappointed by the satiric finale. My favs are 4 and 5.But listening to it now, it seems a much stronger work than I had given it credit for...time to go all in on this one and get to know it. What I love about Prokofiev's music is the amazing detail, the kinds of things that only genius comes up with...including the wonderful orchestral touches...This is so delightful. I only know this work glancingly and it feels like heart and home.
Love this symphony! Russian gloom with a shimmer.
this tempo works for me
Nice.
GREAT
What's up with Parsifal in the Largo? Thanks from Acapulco!
Where can I find this sheet music score online?

The link in the description has been cybersquatted, apparently, and takes me to “Bitcoin Casino.” 🙁
42:38 I think the score doesn't fit
Amazing symphony. I just love this passage in the third movement 38:56 - 40:02 It's so grotesque. I don't usually come up with an extra-musical narrative, but I can't help but imagine some social function of the communist party where the dignitaries get drunk and then clumsily dance with their partners.

The thing about this symphony is that it is more difficult in structure than the 5th...darker and the music is quite beautiful...It is just that there is something a little off in the balance. Something about the proportions.. just too much slow music in the two very long movements compared with the shorter last movement. The ending has something to do with it too. It is not that satisfying. Some great chords and then the final 30 seconds doesn't seem adequate. It might mostly come down to how he has handled the 3 movement structure.
@johnpcomposer -- True....but Why does Parsifal keep showing up? Cheers from Acapulco!
An enigmatic, rather rambling piece of music without any clear structure. It is moody and vague and slightly tired, although there are lyrical moments. But everything is so subdued, reflecting an impasse in Prokofiev's life?
Interesting. But hard to love.
A fine performance of a " meh" work.
?
I have to agree with Stravinsky that this is rather confused. It's like he attempted to rewrite the fifth symphony but the themes just weren't coming.
so slow bro 😦
Wow, what a miserably unsatisfying conclusion / coda to what had been hitherto a really nifty and jaunty conclusion! [It would not take a musicological genius to hear the similarities if a neophyte were to hear the finales of the 5th and then the 6th in succession...] // Does that account for why the work gets far fewer performances than its supposed recognition as the "best" of the 7 in the Prokofiev symphony cycle otherwise deserves? Hmmm. Anyway, those final measures seem like a distorted I-V⁷ cadence--- yuck!!!
You discover the end of this symphony in 2019 ??? o.o
I understand that this surprises you. I find this finale and I have always found it original, wonderful, Prokofiev knows what he's doing ...
It is true that other performers give it more breadth.
But our judgments judge only ourselves.
@@maeless : Yes, i know there are bizarre and inexplicable gaps in what pieces i know or do not. What can i say--- no orchestra in which i have played has ever prgrammed this Prokofiev #6... have done #1 and #5 repeatedly, and next season will be my second crack at #7 (in 1993 on 1st violin, 2020 on viola), but #6, nyet.
Listening again to the first movement, which i really like, and then skipping ahead the opening and then the coda of the finale simply confirms for me and causes me to dig in my heels, as it were, about the very ending. It totally sucks sloughwater and ruins the effect of the symphony as a whole. I cannot comprehend how anyone can find those last measures satisfying....
Igor Vrableetch I find it quite interesting, like a scream from the soul. Though in terms of bizarre endings, Shostakovich certainly has him beat. The endings of his fourth and eleventh are haunting, filled with uncertainty for the future.
As a non musician, I am both in awe and scared
@@paulybarr Not at all. The ending of the Bartok is satisfying--- the shmeared Prokofieff I-V7? Not so much...
