Prokofiev Vision Fugitives, Op. 22 (Boris Berman)

  • The title of the collection, Visions Fugitives, is French for "Fleeting (or Fugitive) Visions." These strange gems of piano writing evoke a half-dream in which one mood or impression is quickly replaced by a contrary or illogical leap out of the subconscious. They are among of Prokofiev's most striking and individual creations, unlike not only any other composer's piano music in tone and structure, but quite unlike much of Prokofiev's own music. They are most suited to listening with the lights dimmed and in a mood for free association.

      Mine too! I got a bunch of classical records for very cheap from my university once, and there was an album of Emil Gilels premiering Prokofiev's 8th Sonata as well as playing a few of the Visions Fugitives. That's where i first heard it. It's so warm and thoughtful. I put the needle back on it repeatedly

    When I first started listening, I thought, "Oh, yay... an hour of Russian Satie..." But there's much more, and, clearly, great artists have found rich sources of inspiration in these "little" pieces. Thanks for posting! Great score-study video!

    The final piece brings the cycle to a very ethereal and satisfying close. The whole set should be listened to as a whole. The pieces are like little entities that fly off in many directions, but they still gravitate towards the home key of a minor.

    The good news is that on a technical level these pieces are rather on the easier side. Even the most complex sounding one is still at “intermediate level”. I find them far easier to play than Prokofiev’s famous “Children’s Album” which was intended for young piano students.

    I notice you threw in an extra performance of the no. 10 at the end. It’s quite a different interpretation and I enjoy it much more than the first. The liberties taken with the tempo really enhance the mood of the piece. Although the precision of articulation by Berman on the first 20 is very admirable.

    The koroliov excerpt you’ve attached is a childish rendition of the interpretation of musical markings. The recording preceding it shows maturity in conveying Prokofiev’s musical, textual desires through a calm demeanor, exactly that of which is seen on a day to day basis, hence the set title.

    • @johnsarkissian5519
      @johnsarkissian5519 7 месяцев назад

      There is Prokofiev’s own recording and interpretation of no.10 on RUclips. It’s quite interesting to compare it to both Koroliov’s and Berman’s interpretations. Quite different from both of them!

    It is strongly subjective but I do not like the added track (repetition of n.10). I don't see Berman's version like the weak point as you mention. I think Koroliov makes the piece more like "scherzo" which I don't like that much. But I repeat, it's just my subjective opinion. Also, it disturbs me little bit to hear n.10 after this "dead end" of n.20 (I would add like 10 seconds gap at least....).
    Anyway... - it is now 20 years since I entered the piano class at Prague conservatory. And few of those pieces were the very first which my teacher gave me to study. So... now, I am learning all the book and in September, I am gonna record it. My ex-teacher will be pleased for sure. :)

      Grossly overrated Satie who seems to have been one of the first composers who engaged in Impressionism and minimalism, and is to this day considered unique and original by many and continues to influence. Who’s pieces are known, revered and still played to this day by many. His legacy speaks for itself. It is unclear why you are trying to tarnish Satie’s image, but it’s not fair, godammit!
