    I can hear echoes of Shostie's First Piano Concerto in some of these.
    There is an attempt to not be disjointed in thematic development as he is in his First Piano Concerto and allow the themes to develop logically, but then "the dog runs after its tail" which only
    Shostie does so eloquently.
    Shostie and Prokofiev were the greatest composers of the 20th century!!!

    Shostakovich's first prelude wasn't written in 1933. He wrote it until 1920 because we read in Fay's book that he was playing this prelude already in 1920. Probably in 1933 he catalogued it as "no.1"

    Playing has some very dubious rhythmic liberties. Makes me kind of “seasick” listening to this interpretation. Also not sure why so many notes are not played together when they should. I assume it’s on purpose, but very odd. Sometimes left hand drowns upper melodies. Not a lot of dynamic range makes performance kind of flat.

    • @sfd373
      @sfd373 3 года назад +1

      I know what you mean, seasick is a good way to describe it, it’s like being cut adrift from the rhythmic drive suddenly. I think there’s a Russian performance technique where you sometimes offset notes to highlight different layers of counterpoint. It can works great in rachmaninoff etc where you have a lot of rubato, but it doesn’t work as well for me here. But what do I know? She’s a fabulous pianist and has made her strong choices. I would also at least partly blame the audio compression for lack of dynamic range - RUclips is terrible for it in general, but this is particularly bad. I’m sure it’ll be vastly different on CD.
