Star Trek Insurrection Ba'Ku Village

  • Insurrection had some lofty expectations to fill since Generations, and First Contact were such huge hits. First Contact was the franchise's most successful film since The Voyage Home, and Insurrection unfortunately underperformed at the box office, and wasn't the critical success that First Contact was either. The main theme which there isn't much use of is the Ba'Ku Village, it's nice theme and very lighthearted, and suites the film perfectly. It's rarely heard unfortunately, and it makes brief appearances in Regeneration, and The Healing Process, and obviously the end credits which it is spliced with the main Star Trek theme.
    The action music is where this score takes center stage. It's some of the best action music he's written since Total Recall, and recalls (hard to avoid the pun) Rambo III quite heavily. The romantic elements in this score are very strong too, and balance out the action sequences very well. However with that said there is one weakness and that's the main theme is rarely used. First Contact's main theme was used often and to great effect however a theme is sorely lacking in this score. I still consider this film score however to be better than First Contact, and miles above Nemesis.

    This is Goldsmith doing his best Forrest Gump theme variation…and it’s just so beautiful. I’ve cried at this many nights just by repeatedly listening. It’s transforming. Everything else fades after this, then becomes secondary to the spiritual elation that I’ve felt. It’s truly unlike anything else. So simple, yet so profound and unexplainable. The key is in the sustained brass, the beauty and simplicity of the harp and oboe/flute solos, then the stopped horns to change the tone yet keep it quiet…it’s all just so perfect.

      Insurection being forgettable is one of the least of its issues. Despite it being a big one people do bring up.that being said on it's own its extremely overrated but I think that by being associated with this intro and movie it does contribute a bit to some of the issues this movie has.

    As an early 90s child I always dreamt of adventure and drama that would rival the exciting adventures of the enterprise crew- instead I grew up in a culture of radical narcissism, I often wondered if I was missing a trick being friendly and non-judgemental .. I often felt sadness at my younger sibings being born in a post 9-11 world... but then the theme of the enterprise kicks back in and I think whoever you are from whatever society you're in.. be it America or some tiny island that has no clout ... that theme represents hope in the face of hopelessness no matter what your goal is as long as it's not to do harm to anything or anyone on this earth or in the rest of reality

  • @mshduke

    I don't suppose any of you know whether Goldsmith ever expanded his beautiful Ba'ku Village theme into a full orchestral piece. It would be fantastic if it were, as I am a large fan of classical music and this short theme seems so classically inspired it is beyond belief.

    • @Ovrkyl
      @Ovrkyl 9 лет назад +8

      Agreed. Someone should treat it the same way the theme from "Inner Light" was expanded on. This theme, the beautiful portion of ST5's title (the only good thing about that whole movie), and "Inner Light" are some of the most beautiful themes in all of Star Trek.

    • @darthkurland
      @darthkurland 6 лет назад +4

      Ovrkyl the theme from “The Inner Light” was composed by Jay Chattaway. But I do agree that there are some similarities between the two pieces. This motif starts with the fanfare written by Alexander Courage (who also orchestrated the score for this entire film) and continues into this serene and quiet melody. Then comes a bit of trouble after Data gets shot and goes crazy. The piece then concludes with Jerry’s theme from TMP/TNG as the Enterprise appears overhead of the camera.

    • @darthkurland
      @darthkurland 6 лет назад +4

      dosmastrify it is 20 years now. I really believe that Jerry Goldsmith was the right composer for the film series of “Star Trek.” It all started with the very first film in 1979. Followed by:
      “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” (1989)
      “Star Trek: First Contact” (1996)
      “Star Trek: Insurrection” (1998)
      And concluded with
      “Star Trek: Nemesis” (2002).
      In addition, Jerry wrote the theme for “Star Trek: Voyager” and won an Emmy Award for it. Unfortunately, during his scoring sessions for “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it was discovered that he was diagnosed with abdominal cancer.
      “Star Trek: Nemesis” would be his final complete score for a motion picture, as he died just two years later at the age of 75.

    I felt the movie need more as well. I mean a planet which has the power to restore ones youth would be a highly coveted prize by many species. They could have had war break out for the planet with several other civilizations but I guess they didn't go that route for budget reasons and that they had a war going on in Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

      You bring up an interesting point there but I belive it was established this way a federation world. But only the sona knew how to gather the radiation from the planet. To he honest there really is no conflict here well there is but I mean technically the bakku are trespassing on a federation world. Which until this movie admitly was a planet no one cared about until the sona where like oh yeah some non federation people are living on your world can we kick them off because we want use the planets radiation to make us and you guys Imotral basicly but yeah doing so will kill all life on the planet so that's why we want them off. Like just say um you gotta leave or we will kill you. You are kind of literally preventing us from being imortal without having to live on that planet.

    I never understood why Insurrection isn't all that well liked. I loved it! Insurrection and First Contact were both great! (Unlike the last TNG movie that shall not be named here, of which pretty much the only good things were Troi and Riker's finally getting married and Data singing Blue Skies!!) But I really loved this movie quite a bit. And the music, especially the Ba'ku village theme, which I agree shows up for too rarely in the movie.

    @eXcommunicate1979 i agree the score was one of the only saving parts of this movie i mean the score just fit the tone of the move perfectly its just too bad the ton was stupid.

    beautiful really =)
    such a nice melody .. fits really perfect to the movie
    i also own the cd ;-)
    and have you recogniced that in star trek XI the music was completely in the background (in almost all normal films the music is in the background) but in older star trek films with goldsmiths music.. it was different - when i hear a piece of first contacts soundtrack i immediately imagine the scene of the movie
    live long and prosper ^^

    @Gojira Shinigami Thank You for posting this. I also consider this a great song and I agree it is poorly put in value in the movie. In defence of Nemesis theme, I think that all main themes in, say, Generations to Nemesis are strongly related to the galactic area where the action takes place. First Contact is SO american with that wind instruments ;) Insurrection theme has the Ba'ku touch. So in Nemesis there should be a Romulan/Reman influence. That noisy orchestral sounds are so much "romulan style" you gotta hate it ;) or not!

      Cat Alin even though “Generations” was not scored by Jerry Goldsmith. Dennis McCarthy was the composer of that film, although I think it was a mistake to not use Jerry’s theme from TMP/TNG in that film.

    I have to agree that all the movies were not great, I must say that the soundtracks move me. In my opinion, Jerry Goldsmith kept the Star Trek franchise going thanks to his beautiful music.

    Amazing theme. As good as it is, it's not my favourite in star trek. I still prefer The Inner Light, Generations Theme, First Contact, and TNG theme.
    That's just to say that there is so much amazing music in Star Trek

    As much as I feel Insurrection was the absolute worst of the Star Trek movies (my reasons are the same as Linkara's), the music in the beginning is so soothing. It just makes me shut my eyes and imagine I'm in some enchanted forest with a river flowing. That was one of the great things about Jerry Goldsmith, even if he did music for movies that were mediocre, he never half-assed his scores. Same thing can be said for James Horner.

      I think Insurrection is the second best TNG cast film, after First Contact. And only Wrath of Khan from the originals tops either.

    the reason i didn't like nemesis as much as the others was because they tried to make it an action movie. the entire last third of it was enterprise fighting the scimitar. Though i have to admit, data dying really caught me off guard. it's like what spock did in wrath of khan

    I still believe Insurrection was a great TNG movie, least it felt like Star Trek. I liked it ... for me, its the last good Star Trek movie and aside from most of Enterprise the final good Star Trek outing.

    With all do respect to Hans Zimmer and his work but he is not the only great movie music composer.
    Jerry`s son Joel isn`t so bad either and there are James Horner, Alan Silvestri, John Towner Williams, Jr., etc. to name but a few. Check out their music aswell.
    Enjoy it :) With an open mind I might add. :)
