    Another great review TMF. I bought my GS 911 many years ago and wish I had know about it earlier as two trips to my local BMW dealer to switch off the fault code warning light cost me £140 (£70 each time they hooked up the computer) Now that would probably cost £80 - £100. Mine is the Bluetooth model and I think it cost 300Euros and I carry it on all my long journeys as some fault codes stop the bike from being started and with the GS 911 you can access those codes and nurse the bike back home. Its purchase for people who do their own maintenance is a "no brainer", if you use it only 3 times, then it has paid for itself. This device is very popular in the US with BMW riders.Keep the reviews coming and ignore the bull dust comments.

    Just found your channel, and am binge watching it now, lol! I've had a bunch of people ask what I thought about the Motoscan app vs the GS-911, so I just did a video comparing them. Great channel, and can't wait to see what other gems you've uncovered!

    Accurate review on the GS911! I received my own last month and I can't speak highly enough about it. For those that enjoy doing their own work on the bike, it's a must have.

    ...I've something like this for my Ford Explorer - been very useful a number of times. Having one for the R1200GS sounds like such a good idea, even small enough to take on a long trip - just in case. Thanks so much for reviewing this!

    Good review pointing me in the right direction of this vital tool. Having ridden BMW's for over 40 years now and only recently crawled out of the dark ages and got a 04 GS12. Well maybe not right out of the dark ages but perhaps into the twilight zone, I need to change the brake fluid in the servo ABS and you cannot do it without one of these. For anyone who doesn't know the owners club have a tool hire facility for members and you can hire one along with many other specialist tools for a tenner each. You send them £50, they post you the tool, you send it back to them when you are finished and they refund you your £50 less their postage and the £10 hire charge. Mark, the chap who runs this is tremendously helpful and gives up his time willingly and for free for the benefit of members. Bet his garage is spectacular. Only downside all of my tech is Apple so I may have to get a garage computer if I cannot do it on my iPad.

    I've got a GS 911 for my NineT. It's such a useful tool and it comes in very handy! I never go on a road trip without it. It can clear potential codes that could stop the motor and leave you stranded. Good review!!

    Hey THF I got a S911 as a Christmas Gift...from the wife....It has already paid for itself. I do my own oil changes and I can now reset the Service Interval by myself. My nearest dealer is 400km away and it was getting very costly to trailer the bike down and pick it the following week. Love the unit !!. Great fun for techno geeks!!

    Question about the GS911: When connected to the diagnostic port, does the GS911 prevent the bike from automatically shutting down if the engine is not running?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

      I don't honestly know Jack - all I know is that whilst the GS911 is plugged in and the ignition is turned on, it returns real time readings....

    Like the way you made the video length 9.11 ;-). I love my GS911 wifi. It has paid for itself over and over, especially when resetting service intervals, which could cost $70+ to have done at the dealer each time. I also had an Exhaust Servomotor Flap error accompanied once by backward rush of air through the air cleaner and a cloud of dust during an engine start, so once aware of the fault I decided to remove the servoflap motor entirely and leave the exhaust butterfly valve in the fully open position (works fine without it and doesn't sound much louder generally). I installed a Servo Buddy from Skutrnet to avoid getting 1000 exhaust servomotor flap error codes and to tell the bike computer all is well :-). Occasionally the GS911 is unable to pick up a faulty component, such as when my TPS failed on me and no error codes were produced (just an intermittent nasty bucking broncho effect at 3000-3500RPM). I also enjoy being able to watch all the real time values on all selected components 'live' while the engine is running to see that all are operating within specifications.

    Nice video TMF. I use a very similar diagnostic unit on my Golf R. It's called an obd11. Works on a very similar principle to the hex unit. It gives information such as error codes etc. It needs to be connected to a wi-fi network to function correctly, but gives a fair amount of customisation options. It is a bit cheaper than the hex unit, I think it retails around £90 mark. Main drawback is you have to purchase 'credits' to facilitate any changes you make. Assume the hex unit does not require any such 'credits' to function correctly.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 лет назад +1

      +michael johnson no, no credits required, maybe that accounts for the cheaper price of the obd unit...

    Bike tech in Ireland,great service and the unit is less expensive. Once you set it up it's easy to work, I was under the impression it only worked with B M W motorcycles?The rates that BMW charge it's nice to know what the fault is before it goes to the dealer,or you may be able to repair, or sometimes it's just needing reset.

    Andy, that code you have maybe nothing but if the exhaust valve is not fully stroking (open) then your loosing mileage and power. Reset that code and see if it comes back up again. If it does, remove your muffler and remove the flapper plate on the valve. The screws may be tack welded in place, if so, use a small dremmel tool and grind off the plate screw heads and remove the plate. Don’t remove the valve or actuator, just the plate on the shaft. This way you wont get “Other” fault codes.

    To bring this a bit more up to date: I've just purchased what I hope will be an equivalent for the kit featured. The difference is cost - my kit (including lead, Bluetooth scanner and software) comes in at less than 50 quid. The featured kit is MUCH more. Specifically there is a OBD2 to BMW ICOM converter lead (about £12), a Bluetooth OBD2 sensor (about £15) and an android app called MotoScan - an alternative for the 911 software featured here which is written for BWM bikes and is only about £20 for the full featured version.
    I'll report back when it arrives and I've tried it out.

    I was googling about BMW ISTA and you're one of the hit results LOL. I can't find an official literature about this.
    I own a VCM II for Ford IDS with flexible subscription. I usually work with my own car. Hoping there is a similar service for motorcycle. Is there an official device and subscription for BMW Motorrad? I just want to reset my service light on my bike and check for error codes. I don't like the idea of travelling 200km to my dealer just to reset it. With my growing bike collection it seems a good investment anyway.

What I am interested in knowing about the kit, is if it's possible to download any performance data/ diagnostic history via this tool? Of if you know if there is any such historic data stored in the onboard computer?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 лет назад

      Historic fault codes are stored on the bike, you can clear them with the GS-911. ...and yes to answer your question I do use it from time to time to check for new error codes and am pleased with it - as I'm not a mechanic myself I don't use it as much as it probably deserves though (but it is a nice piece of kit to have)...

    TMF - good intro to the GS911. One issue that I believe warrants mention - their "standalone" software is Microsoft Windows only, if I remember correctly. Please correct if I have that wrong. I know they support "cloud" functionality via a browser and Internet connection for non-Windows users, but if you are in the garage, or somewhere that doesn't include Wifi / internet, you must use a Windows PC for *full* functionality of the gs911 tool. So, if you are a Mac user, you have an issue unless you are running Windows in some sort of virtual machine. This might be a "who cares" or TMI for some, and I realize most users will have Windows, but worth noting IMO for anyone on a Mac or Linux considering a purchase.

    Nice one, been following a few of your reviews, rare to find someone honest who rides a variety of machines, tell me something, I'm looking at two bikes, around the same coin and narrowed down to just these two before buying, Triumph Tiger Sport 1050 2018 model and BMW S1000XR 2017, ridden the BMW and love it, no way I can ride the Tiger without buying it but know the motor well as I already have a Sprint 1050, both the same k's, the BMW seems quite advanced in suspension and rider modes etc, getting either for sport touring, long day trips, any thoughts? it's not an easy decision. Pardon the big ask but the Triumph is rare in our bike shops on the little island I live on.

    I have a GS911 and now that I also have a MotoScan, the GS911 is grossly overpriced. I have been waiting for years for the GS911 to allow coding to change my 12H to 24H clock display and their web site states "future". Well what century is that "future" in? Yet my MotoScan for a mere fraction of the cost did it and everything else like Brake Bleed and Service Resets.

    The GS-911 is without doubt the best 'accessory' you can get for the GS.

    • @TheDervMan

      TheMissendenFlyer Yep, I have the air cooled motor so use the older GS-911. It's just so useful, means I can do everything a dealer could do. From my perspective tools like this really have an influence on what bike I'd buy as dealer servicing is a false economy given the age of bikes I tend to own.

    I see this wifi version supports the s1000r. £200 or below and I'd think about it purely out of interest/nosiness- while the price will be good for those who can make real use of it, too pricey for me.

      TheMissendenFlyer , I've seen a link pipe that gets rid of it , my bikes too old 06 , ive a y section and Remus can , it just needs cleaning and wd40 to free it up , it's going to be a constant fiddle as it will jam over and over , look into the link pipe

      Skutrnet's Servo Buddy helps you get rid of it and keep the bike computer error code free. I've done that to my R1200RT Camhead. Also, you don't have to replace the piece of pipe with the butterfly valve in it. You can just disconnect the cables as the valve naturally remains in the open position unless the servomotor closes it (at lower RPM).

      Well, that's fine, but .... you seem to have a sense of " do things properly/professionally ( well to a decent standard ) ". Piloting, bikes, business, family etc etc
      So; I beg you ... Since you are obviously serious about this vlogging.....Go to Costco and get a macbook pro . I specify Costco because if you dont "get on with it" you have 90 days to return without any questions.
      Invest in the top spec. You'll be amazed at how much faster they are for video editing. (The whole video/advertising/movie industry uses them )
      Kindest regards Stuart.

    the only thing that stops my bike from running is lack of spark or fuel. looks like you are getting this motorcycling thing all wrong. a tank of petrol, a bedroll, a bottle of jack. no need for this nonsense , the more you promote it the more this nonsense will become norm. please do not get back to me saying this is progress because its not. this kind of shit is pushing us back to where some folk say we belong.
