I’m only 25% in and LOVING the content as/usual, but feel the irrepressible urge to say - after damaging my own acid mantle horribly - if one’s goal is to eradicate body acne, multiple levels of exfoliation will almost certainly compromise the skin barrier (stinging is never a good sign, and is an indicator of irritation, as opposed to a sign the product is “working”).
If you were to stick to only one combined physical & chemical exfoliant, plus a gentle body wash, I imagine you could replicate - if not enhance - your existing results, without risking long-term barrier damage.
Feel free to take or leave this layperson’s recommendation if your current routine truly feels like a cure, but I’d hate for what initially felt like the panacea of acne-free life to turn around and rear its inflamed, angry head a few months in.
I’m 3 years into healing myself from long-term damage caused by over exfoliation, in the name of curing my acne… And I really wish I’d headed into the derms office and requested Clindamycin and Tret from day one 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just a quick comment for Hannah and anyone else struggling with body acne...
I worked for a dermatology and plastic surgery clinic for 5 years during undergrad. Washing your hair first and then placing it up in a towel before washing the rest of your body was always something the derms recommended to patients. They then recommended a product simply called "pumice cleanser" from iderma for the chest and back to be used every couple of days. Patients used to rave about the results.
Hope that helps anyone that needed to advice ❤️

Awesome! I don't really have chest acne as much (but I have much shorter hair than Hannah) but I have quite a bit of congestion behind my ears and trailing down the front of my neck. It's almost cystic appearing. I just figured that I was just not disciplined enough in my diet and consuming too much sugars and causing congestion, but im noticing no matter how much I force myself to omit sugars and carbs, I still get these frequent breakouts. Could that be due to shampoo/conditioner as well?

    • @girlypanache7095
      @girlypanache7095 Год назад +7

@@KendraMorgan I'm definitely not qualified to give any real advice... If you try treating it topically (by keeping your hair up and thoroughly cleaning/treating it with a special wash) and you still don't see improvement, you might want to talk to you dermatologist about spironolactone. It helps treat acne that is more hormonal related.

If you don’t mind me asking, do you know if this would matter for someone with short hair? Or is it really only for people with long hair? I have lots of acne on my chest and upper back, however since my hair is short I am not sure if it would make a huge difference?

    • @girlypanache7095
      @girlypanache7095 Год назад +3

@@lemon2639 Topical solutions only really work if the problem causing acne is external. Chest and back acne that isn't caused by dirt, oil, products.. etc. usually needs a solution like accutane. People have to figure out what is causing the acne before picking a solution. Trying something like an acne wash first and changing your routine to see if anything improves is the first step.
And to the people with short hair... The shampoo and conditioner are still going to run down your back and chest. Toweling your hair and then thoroughly washing your back and chest afterwards is still important ❤️

It’s interesting to see a “declutter” from the perspective of “is this truly special enough to generate clutter?” perspective rather than getting tired of things and purging them. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but I literally leave a hairtie in the shower, so that when I condition my hair I can then tie it into a twisted bun out of the way. I also put my hair over one shoulder to condition as well, trying to keep it from touching my body as much as I can.
I then wash my bod, wash my face, and THEN, put my head upside down, untie the hair and rinse off still upside down, so my hair never touches my skin basically at all. I found this makes a HUGE difference in prevention, rather than treating the skin after the fact.
It also gives the conditioner more time to soak into my hair as I go through the rest of my shower.
I've never seen/heard of anyone else doing this but I've done it probably since I was an oily teen with hip length, fine but thick hair? So almost 20 years.

Hi Hannah. It’s so lovely hearing the story about the Takamichi Beauty Room. I have placed a couple of orders since you mentioned and couldn’t be more pleased with my items. I am giving my brother some incense matches as part of his Christmas gift. One of the things I enjoy so much about your channel is the careful and thoughtful curation of beautiful but useful products from small businesses that you sometimes share from Etsy shops to Takamitchi. Thank you for sharing.
P.S. I also wanted to mention that so glad you figured out the source of your chest/Bach acne. With all that exfoliating it may be useful to you to add barrier repair and soothing product like LRP B5. While I don’t contend with acne, I do have dry, sensitive skin that is easily over exfoliated and sometimes benefits from a bit of tender, soothing care. All the best.

Hey Hannah - something you might want to consider using instead of the hair towel is a shower cap.
I use one because I have fine but thick wavy hair and I put my styling holding products in the shower and then use the shower cap to “plop” my hair with.
Once I put the shower cap on I do a final body wash and rinse. After I’m out of the shower, I remove the shower cap & do some towel scrunching after to get most of the water out, and then I put it back on while I get ready (skincare, dressed & makeup). Sometimes I even put on a second freshly dry shower cap after the initial towel scrunch & re-plop.
K, that’s it! Thank you so, so, so much for all of your lovely content and for helping to make what has personally been very awful year a little less difficult. You are absolutely a much appreciated bright spot 💕

I just wanted to say that I absolutely love the way you organize your thoughts and videos in general! I have a tendency to kinda structure my brain similarly but for some reason I always feel guilty for being detailed if that makes sense - like I feel pressured to communicate in an extremely short quippy ways because it seems like that’s kinda how the world rolls right now, or like “why would anyone want to listen to me for more than a few short seconds” or something. Watching your videos is really inspiring because I can see how communicating this way is wonderful to listen to, and can be professional and informative.
Realizing that has been making me feel much more productive and creative as well, because I’m spending less energy stressing over much about limiting myself and instead focusing on doing a good job at conveying things in a way that’s more natural for me.

Oh I have struggled with back acne for a long time and it was also because of hair products. I had quite a long hair and it is curly (aka I have to apply some extra products to keep the curls in shape). I started cutting it super short and ever since I noticed the acne getting better but didn't connect the dots... it's been like a year or so I realised the source of the problem and just like you started exfoliating and putting some extra steps to keep my back clean after the hair routine. My acne is pretty much gone now, I still have scars tho but its barely noticeable.
It was a huge insecurity I had... I live in a super hot and humid city and couldn't even wear tank tops in public. I even went to many dermatologists and none ever mentioned it could be hair products, they thought it was allergy or hormonal.

A little water will accumulate in the back, but you can dump that right before putting on your towel, which you can do after you’ve washed your body and finished your shower. It’s a little simpler than interrupting to put on the towel and then protecting he towel from the shower. You just need a good solid cap instead of a disposable one.

18:28 - yes!! this way of letting art or poetry wash over you without trying to understand or translate word-for-word is called Negative Capability. from the Poetry Foundation, "Contemplating his own craft and the art of others, especially William Shakespeare, in one of his famous letters to relatives [John] Keats supposed that a great thinker is “capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.”"

Thanks for the many updates--I am so happy to have the link to Julia Frodalh's website and so curious to see what she offers. I did the same as you with my closet in my late 30s and felt so relieved by the fact that dressing up became less of a chore than during my teens, 20s, and most of my 30s. Now, I have to do the same with my makeup collection.

It might also help, if you have the space/ability, to wash/condish your hair upside down then go directly into the turban so you don't have to do such a rigorous body care routine.

Hannah, please get thee to an allergist!! I went through this trial and error process with my eczema and suffered a lot needlessly. If beauty ingredients are irritating your skin at all and you have access to healthcare, it's so worth it to go to an allergist and get the full battery of tests -- the skin prick tests, the blood test, and the cosmetic ingredients test where they'll leave patches on your skin for a few days and see what reacts.
I learned I was allergic to common ingredients, which I had been loading up on, because I was unaware. This includes tea tree oil and avocado oil, but the main ones are propylene glycol, soy and all soy-glycerin derivatives. Stuff I never would have thought of.
Needless to say it's really hard to find products without any of these things, but your channel's emphasis on clean beauty has introduced me to so many helpful brands! I think pursuing finding out which ingredients are causing your body acne could lead to some interesting content and hopefully provide you with some relief.

I’ve met so many people who have developed multi-chemical sensitivity over years. Some are obvious with people who are working in cleaning homes or offices or both. Some are people who use many hair or skin products. Once it develops the sensitivity seems to be very easy to stimulate pustules or rashes as the most common set of symptoms.

I wash and then condition my hair. I keep my hair up and then wash my body and finish with washing my face. I've done this routine for over 10 years and it's helped keep my chest and back completely clear, NO MATTER the product I'm using. It's all about getting a good wash off of the hair products that's still remaining on the skin.

My hair is generally just above shoulder length so I don’t have to tie it up in the shower after washing it, but I follow the same order! Shampoo/condition hair, wash body, then cleanse face! Helps to make sure I don’t get acne on my shoulders or forehead.

I have fungal acne and curly hair leading to a similar problem between skin and rich and necessary hair products. I do the same routine of bathing my hair and face after wrapping up my hair. I dont use the physical exfoliators. I use a spray called skin smart I get from Amazon. It kills bacteria and even fungus on the skin and has been a gentle and effective part of my routine, including on my face it’s my first step after cleansing and I proceed with everything else after it dries. It has a tiny bit of sea salt, so I dont use it if I want to do a big makeup

Your new body care routine sounds fantastic, & I’m glad it’s working for you! I wanted to add my two cents as it may help a bit more. If you are a person who likes to leave conditioner in your hair to sit for a few minutes, try using a claw clip to get your hair off your body so it doesn’t sit on your skin whilst you get on with your shower routine. I found it helped me a tonne! 💕

Thanks to them I stopped doing physical exfoliants and it’s helped my skin and acne a TON.

Exfoliation can actually further damage your skin, as it strips layers, so be carefuly. Typically, the fewer cleansing products used, the better. Vulnerable skin can actually be more prone to acne. I suggest watching Dr Dray's channel on RUclips, if you don't already. Changed how I take care of my skin.
I haven't had body acne in years, but when I did, I used the Neutrogena body scrub. It worked like a charm.

I had the same problem with chest/back acne, but I approached it in a different way. So I only wash my hair every two weeks, but now I wash my hair independently from my body. When it’s hair washing day, I sit on my knees and wash my hair under the bath faucet. I keep my hair off of my body for the entire washing process. Then, if I still have to wash my body, I will do that later with a shower cap over my already washed, dried, and styled hair.
This was just fyi, in case it might help someone out. ☺️

about the body acne and hair washing, I avoid all the hassle of this by simply washing my hair with my head upside down. I have a tub and I sit next to it, with my head on the inside, and when I'm done with all the steps, i simply put it up with a claw clip and resume with washing my body. never had any body acne and a friend that did have this issue and started washing her hair the same way got rid of it almost immediately

Hi Hannah! If the exfoliating doesnt work, it could be a dietary thing. acne on specific parts of the body could be due to inflammation or other bacteria issues in the gut :) if its actual *pimples* that is! less of the clogged pores kinda thing. glad it seems to be clearing up!!

Putting your hair up in a microfiber towel immediately after washing is a game changer... I'm really prone to breakouts on my face and body (34 y/o who still has acne, woot woot)... I am religious about putting my hair up in a towel and then cleaning my body as the last part of my shower routine. I started doing this years and years ago and it helped tremendously with body breakouts. It also takes my hair forever to dry so the sooner I get it up in my microfiber towel, the better.
