Just my thoughts...I've enjoyed watching your progression from a no-buy to a strict budget to a more natural, fluid budget. This feels very real-life, and not contrived to fit into an artificial RUclips world. I love hearing your thought processes as you deal with real situations and adjust your budgeting rules accordingly. It's like starting out on a restricted weight-loss diet and gradually progressing to a lifelong healthy eating plan. Kudos to you for allowing this natural progression to occur and adapting to it instead of fighting it.

I used to frequently fall victim to the devil of "oh it's just one more." One more tshirt, one more lipstick, etc etc. And when I realize I was playing "oh just one more" with items that were significantly impacting my financial situation that I finally stopped and looked myself in the eye. In the beginning it was hard to see whether or not my purchases were in the right spirit, but now I am in your camp of keeping the Spirit of the project alive while being flexible in the details is key. It's the pause and reflection without impulse that is key for me.

Hey Hannah, just a heads up--Bershka is a European fast fashion brand (under Inditex) and it was founded in 1998, so I'm pretty sure that that's where the name of the jeans comes from. I'm just saying this so that you can be careful while washing and caring for them, bc they may not be of the best quality denim like you would find in real vintage denim. They look great though!

It actually seems like choosing to go $7 over your budget shows emotional maturity to me. It shows that you believe you can have the very small (less than a drug store lipstick) treat added on and then go back to clean finances the next day. And that you were doing it without obsessing and planning and plotting. It's like the analogy to nutrition that you often use. It's often easier to stay on the super, super clean nothing added nutrition plan. It's a lot harder to have a small thing and then go back. And I think you choosing to do so for well planned but not obsessive reasons shows you leveling up with your relationship with shopping. Or at least that's my feel. Because while you want it to be strict, you also want it to be intuitive.

Rigid rules are meant to be tools we use to guide us when we need guidance, like a tensor bandage around a sprained ankle while it heals. Once we don't need quite as much guidance, we also don't need the same rigid supports in place. I think going over budget consciously and with careful deliberation is not a failure nor is it "borrowing from next year" but rather is a reflection that you've done the REAL WORK to develop critical thinking and decision making skills. It's a sign of progress!

It sounds like you were being very thoughtful and using wise mind to decide (i.e. not deciding fully based on emotion but not deciding devoid of emotion either) AND these items all sound like things you will cherish in your wardrobe. As well, I think it's important to have balance! Fewer nicer things is a great guideline, but I don't think you have to follow it 100% of the time. Finding that balance, which I think is what you've been exploring and aiming to do this whole year, is so important and it seems like you're really getting there! I will follow you closely forever. Seven dollars? Seven dollars! Jeminy Cricket was on your shoulder.....and imho you made the right choice! The success of your last 23 months, as defined by you, ALLOWED you to spend $7 over budget. As result, you learned how "overspending the budget" feels. Presumably, it did not open the floodgates of overspending!
p.s. I've been watching your videos on the family room tv for the last couple of weeks. My husband, who is dealing with major memory issues, asks me if you are in your early 20s every times he sees you! He doesn't remember he saw you yesterday, so each time is a new appraisal! Once, he mentioned that you were very well spoken and poised for a tweny-three-old. Thought you might get a kick out of that. (Yes, we are old).

I’m thinking about having a budget next year, but I’m worried I will almost put myself under pressure to spend all of it - similar to what you are saying you did because it was December. How do you deal with not spending your budget just for the sake of spending? I hope what I’m trying to say makes sense.
And I can second what others have said about Bershka - it’s a brand under Zara’s umbrella and what you paid sounds about right for what the original price would have been.

i assume her no-buy year trained her not to spend just for the sake of spending. maybe making your budget on the low side would help you not overspend, and maybe force you to save it for the next month to make it add up to more? that's what i'm considering for next year.

    • @MoonlitSunflower

I think it may be better while budgeting to budget to save your money, rather than budgeting what you can spend. I actually used to be pretty good at budgeting, but I never put my savings in to the budget. I made sure my bills and things I needed like gas and groceries were taken care of first before I would shop. You might benefit from looking in to the 50, 20, 30 rule for budgeting.
Maybe a low buy similar to Angelica Nyqvist's would be better for you. I think she only let herself buy 3 things per month but she allowed those things to roll like Hannah allowed her budget to roll.

I'm a huge huge believer in "paying yourself first" - the very top line item on our budget is 10% to savings, followed by giving and our other financial goals (paying off student loans, etc). Until my boss called me to her office and told me my skirts were a little too short and I should wear skirts that are more appropriate for my job. And so I went shopping for some midi length skirts and dresses that I could wear to work. I spent a long time choosing and making sure they are the right ones for me, so it definitely wasn't a case of impulse shopping, and if it weren't for that conversation with my boss I'm sure I wouldn't have broken my no buy at all. Hannah, you have done such an amazing job of putting into literal words what it feels like to budget.. what it feels like to not buy...and just the feelings that go along with not being able to buy everything you want which is what I feel like society tells us is what we should do. I have so enjoyed meeting you thru your channel and it has been a year now that I have been listening to you and I really and truly appreciate you. You have helped me tremendously.

Dear Hannah: You have worked so, so, SO hard - with diligence and commitment - for the last 2 years! Many of us have been with you from the start. What a JOY it has been! December's Budget had a few unique components, and as always you were thoughtful, contemplative, thorough, insightful. Thank you for sharing this AMAZING journey!! I'm so pleased you purchased wonderful goodies to enjoy.

While I get the struggle re your budgeting choice, I would like to highlight that, after the whole year of really training yourself to 'think' different, it's ok to give yourself back that $7 (and not just because I wouldn't have counted the toothpaste in my own rules lol). But the fact that you stressed about it enough that you had to justify it reminded me of that OTHER habit you wanted to break: being overly precious about things/ researching items. 7 bucks seems like a very cheap solution to reinforce that sometimes it really is ok to want things/ 'treat your self' as long as it *isn't* the reestablishment of habits (and I know you got this !) and asl long as you can do it without the old dread you used to experience.

I’m so glad you bought all four pieces. Take careful examination of that 20% process (I know you do) as THAT is where the work and success and change in this 2019 project lies. The budget is the tool that allowed the work to happen, but the WORK is much deeper. Of course you know this truth; it shows!

Based on what you have previously talked about relating to your budget and previously your no-buy, the ability to go 7 dollars over budget, without it causing you to either spiral, or to beat yourself up is a huge sign of growth Also, while I understand what you have previously said about sales and whatever, to me it seems like you were able to truely find a balance.

hannah, when i was looking into fabrics, i saw that nylon, and rayon are synthetic fabric, is this a better choice then polyester in terms of the environment? will they shed as much, and do they last longer? im trying to reduce my micro-plastic. i realize you are not an environmental expert, but you do know fabrics. and tell julia congratz, she seems like a lovely person.

    • @caissafrass6631

I don’t know if you’re still looking for an answer, but rayon and viscose are MUCH better for the environment than polyester and nylon. Rayon and Viscose are man made cellulose fibers - eg. plant matter, not plastic. They’re biodegradable. And if you’re kind to them they are long lasting (but you do need to be delicate).

    • @chillytoes1
      @chillytoes1 2 года назад

@@caissafrass6631 thank you for your reply, i actually found the answer, and now i avoid polyester as much as i can, which is very difficult as some stores have tons of polyester. i saw a beautiful dress, i couldve sworn it was wool, 95% polyester, 5% wool, $128, bad for the environment, and an absolute rip off

Love the tops - you can mix and match a lot with them, so they were good buys, especially in the sale. Wear them, enjoy them, create looks with them. It's just stuff. We attach all this emotional baggage to material things and it takes away the healthy enjoyment of life. That can work in both directions: compulsive acquisition of more stuff, and obsessive self-denial. It is good that your channel works like an accountability partner for you though.

i just searched the definition of vintage clothing out of curiosity from all the comments about the bershka jeans. google states that vintage is at least 20 years old. if the jeans were made within a year of the company opening, which is 1998 according to comments, that would make it vintage. (also, 100 years would make it antique) just thought thats interesting info.

Don’t know where this thought came from... and I didn’t think it when I saw the black/white stripped turtleneck you showed in another video, but when I saw you bought another black/white stripped shirt, all I could think - I wonder if she’s trying to create a “Where’s Waldo” wardrobe in black/white. Now I’m not one to talk, I own so many of the same style and I happen to love black/white but I personally don’t like how I look in stripes. Just wanted to share my off beat thought... LOL...

So why am I sad that you went through an excruciating examination of yourself when I saw you exhibit such happiness over your serendipitous shopping excursion that met your expectations so meticulously? It’s almost as if a strict adherence to your budget at the end of 2019 would have been punishing for the universe supplying your desires within your essential structure. Perhaps it was your explanation. Nonetheless, I’m glad you made the purchase. I’m glad you trusted your instincts and understood yourself through all your efforts through the past two years. Best wishes for a Happy New Year! Thank you for all the great content!

I think you said that you actually didn't have the money to allow a splurge following 2018, but I thought it was a bit harsh that you didn't give yourself a bit of wiggle room between your two project years. I don't want to be "that person," but I honestly think you earned that 7 dollars. You have come SO FAR in your habits, you have held true to every aspect of your rules for 2 YEARS. That's a really long time, especially beginning it all completely cold turkey. I don't think for a second this means you'll return to your past. I truly think that was a "treat yourself" moment. I get that that's what your entire budget is, but be proud of yourself that it took you 2 years to break any rule. That's empowering. And technically, you're right....there was no rule at the end. 😉
