this is one of the best country i have visited, unfortunately i only went to helsinki but my next visit would be turku, porvoo and lapland......a big hello to finland from australia
william cambronero You're welcome. Porvoo is old but it could be too small for you. But Turku and Tampere would be good for you if you're fed up with Helsinki.
Anthony Bourdains version of Finland episode was horrible. Like Anthony said cold land and full of alcoholists. But this one is much better. Bizarre food finnish episode make me happy :)
I am from the USA but I love the Finnish culture, the Finnish people and the music is larger than life. I dream of seeing Finland one day. Cheers to the wonderful people of Finland.
Sweden here! And I love Finland. It got amazing nature and amazing history. I'll move there when i'm done with my studies here! Finland is a huge thumb up!
I'm a Fin and i've eaten most of the foods seen on that episode. Even blood brownies with huckleberries, and its actually pretty good. I'm not surprised that people who grew up next to a mcdonalds, havent ever tryid real food.
+Smygli Bloodcake (veripalttu) is tolerable with some lingonberry jam, but try the traditional dish "rössypottu", including bloodcake as one of its ingredients. I am still having bad memories of the "Traditional dish days" at the school back in North :-/
I haven't either, but we have a soup that has dumplings made out of blood in it. I actually like it, it has some meat and other stuff in it, too, but I prefer to eat just the potatoes and those dumplings. Or at least I did as a child.
The thing i like about Finnish food culture is that you can see that its not picky. They used all parts of the animal to survive the winter while russia and sweden we're leeching off of them.
PEOPLE. The show is called BIZARRE FOODS. He is not going to sit there eating grilled salmon and french fries. My God. He looks for the weirdest stuff people DO EAT around the world. YOU don't have to eat it. NO ONE YOU KNOW has to eat it. BUT PEOPLE DO!! That's the whole point of the show. My God.
In Vietnam we have a similar dish, but it's made of preferably chicken/duck/goose blood, sometimes pig blood. We don't bake it though, the blood is taken freshly from the animal, whipped and left to set into a jelly-like texture, and served with roasted peanuts, parsley and other herbs for dressing; or after the blood has set, we boil and serve it with the broth for certain types of noodles. But I guess such conducts are very difficult to perform in countries with very cold climate like Finland.
Hey! No, I haven't tried it. I look it up though ;-) I don't usually like licorice but I'll try it! If I do go, it will definitely be in the summer! I would like to visit Helsinki and also visit the native Sami people as well. I think that's very interesting.
Eh, while I was in elementary school around 6 years ago they still served blood pudding roughly once a month. It is traditional food in Oulu, so schools try to preserve it by serving it in schools. I Would not be surprised if it was removed from other cities' school menus though.
Kun vähän vilkuilee sitä euroopan karttaa niin huomaa, että aika iso maahan tämä on noihin lukuisiin täpliin verrattuna. Väkiluku on se mikä meistä oikeastaan pienen tekee.
That part concerned Oulu region. They also said that "Decades ago, some twisted government official decided that this was the perfect health food for the children of northern Finland". So no, it's not a nationwide practice, but still notable nevertheless. Many, MANY children from this region (especially ones who are adults now, including myself) have had to eat that junk multiple times during our school years. From what I've heard, they serve it more seldomly these days but still, they serve it.
Glad to see that this program gives a much more authentic and realistic view on Finland than the crap they put Anthony Bourdain through i.e. taking him to the FILTHIEST in-door sauna an average Finn like me has ever seen and then introducing him to an ancient cupping therapy that no longer is a common practice but rather a very rare form of alternative medicine these days. And don't get me started on all the drunks with potty mouths in that episode T_T, including that so called "guide" he had...
Blood pudding! That's the stuff! Tastes real good and works very well as a warm sandwich. Just slice off a slice, put it in the toaster and eat it with some lingonberry or just put some butter on it. It's great! Tastes like roast awesome! Don't knock it until you've tried it. There's a reason we all eat it up here in the Grim North! =D
I am actually quite impressed by the amount of people in this video who speak English to the point I can understand them perfectly. Much better than many other countries i've seen him explore.
Nam :q Kyllä kiitos! :) Hirvisonnin munuainen on muuten varmaan parasta mitä oon ikinä maistanut :) Siin oli sen lihan makua ja sit se ihana koostumus ja elämän nesteen marinointi :D
We also have similar dish in Southeast asia - Indonesia! We call it 'Marus' but the texture is more wet pudding-like than this. We eat with a bowl of noodle soup with beef balls and fried cow skin :D. It's delicious doesn't taste like blood really
Here in Finland we have about 1400 - 1600 bears and yearly we hunt bears around 80-150 bears. Thats only because bears are not only a huge security risk, but they cause havoc too. We can live all here, but bears place is not in my backyard. Its place is on the woods. And yes, nearest bear live 2 kilometers to west of my house right now, when I write this.
I lived in Oulu, Finland before. The bloody thing in the video (It was called rössypottu) was traditional food in Oulu. We ate the bloody thing in soup, usually. It actually reminds me of used tampon. But It's not that bad when you learn to eat it. Really.
"Where salt and butter are still considered exotic seasonings." Fuck you, we've been drying sea salt and churning butter for centuries. "And where Finns still hunt, catch and raise a lot of their food." Fuck you, well-supplied supermarkets are everywhere and hunters are hobbyists. "Others hunt and eat bear." Fuck you, see above. "A country where blood still shows up on school cafeteria menus." Fuck you, that hasn't happened once in the twelve years I spent eating school food. For a documentary, you sure managed to horribly stereotype the entire country within the intro for the sake of making us seem exotic. Good job, amazing journalism.
"And where Finns still hunt, catch and raise a lot of their food." ...The way I see it, this includes fishing. My family actually eats fish that was caught and smoked by my dad's cousin, and we never buy smoked fish from the supermarket anymore. ...And yes, I live in southern Finland rather than the north. I've also eaten bear that was shot by my uncle, and several moose that were shot by that same uncle. Blood might not appear on school menus in southern Finland, but it apparently does in the north (like from Oulu upwards). ...Hell, we still have kotikalja on school menus, at least in my high school back in 2004-2008 and vocational school in 2010-2012.
Blood foods do appear on school menus in Southern Finland, too. There's veripalttu (it's like thick thick blood pancake) around Sastamala, and at least in Rauma, there's blood pancakes in schools.
Eww... What the heck is blood brownie cake? Im from finland, i was born in finland, i grew up in finland, im purely finnish and i have never saw or heard of that.... Thats weird. ?
its all to do with your parents education on food. I never grew up in Finland even though i am half Finnish, but know about all the Finnish foods, since my parents taught me. One of my dads favorites is verilätty. I hate many finnish foods, but give me a karjalanpiirakka and i will be happy.
A good thing then that anyone, even the "poorest" in Norway can take holidays wherever they want whenever they want. If they don't like the cold in winter. But most ethnic norwegians like the mountains in fall and winter, and have cottages or cabins to enjoy our own climate some too. But like I said, wiki Norway! It's my favourite reading, actually, the wiki-article about Norway. According to them, and the UN and the CIA which wiki name as sources, we rule..we're the best place in the world! : )
I am from a place on the west coast in Finland, close to Vaasa, but i live close to Helsinki now and there some have never heard about bloodcake, but I love it! it tastes so much better than it sounds! ;)
Usually food is prepared in kitchen, especially during winter time, and there is heating to keep homes warm. So I don't think there is anything that would make it to impossible to prepare that kind of food in Finland. Different countries just have different traditions for foods.
MiracLe most countries foods dont come from there countrys ...hamburgers go back to mongolia, pizza is not italian its egyptian, snails are not french they are greek (minoan) and british fish and chips are well a jewish tradition
This video just made my homelands basic stuff seem odd and exotic... Then again it made me realize that damn... I got to get back to our wilderness more often. Which I'm from, the korpi (wilderness)
It is always funny to listen english speaking people speaking finnish :D Of course you have my respect for that you come in our country and be interested in our culture. You are welcome.
they focuse on different kind of foods. Andy likes traditions, this guy eats huge portions and kinda-weird food, and Gordon Ramsay sits down, eats a cold factory-made Karjala pastry, spits it out, calls Finns terrible cooks and flies away to go yell at someone else.
That episode is a proper view of Finland. Not just a sightseeing-tour of crappiest parts of crappiest town of Finland... Helsinki. I hope that one day southern folks could understand that there's life after Kehä III. I had high hopes about Anthony Bourdain's episode of Finland... It sucked like windows 98.
we are quiet, but if you ask us somenthing we will answer :) And if you wanna come to finland, think hard that if you wanna go in to south or north. Its very diffrent :)
You doubt that I'm 6'7 190 lbs? Ill take that as a compliment :). Its due to extensive exercise, I eat literally whatever I want and burn it off on the court or in the gym. On school days I workout 3-4 hours after school. during weekends i have two 3 hour workouts, on Sunday i only have one workout, when basketball season comes I'll reduce these workouts. I have a 29 inch vertical, 34 inch running(max) vert.
I've never had that blood cake thing myself, but I love myself some blood pancakes. Tastiest pancakes ever. ...Spinach pancakes are good, too. ...Now I want to eat some bear. (I've also had reindeer, moose, deer, pheasant... and horse. Horse is good.)
Naturally... I'm not questioning that. But as i said even law here in Finland dictates that population on certain wildlife will be kept in order so that they won't become a danger. And there sure as hell is't a danger that any animal here in Finland would go extinct since we have strict laws governing poacher. So if animal is hunted anyway it is natural and respecting towards the nature to use the meat instead of letting it rot.
Finland know how to make manly food.

Well, aint this a quite massive surprise...

william cambronero dont mis tampere

I think this guy's the first non-finnish person ever that likes salmiakki.
My American friend didn't like salmiakki by itself but she quite enjoyed Fazer's salmiakkisuklaa! It was weird. :D
I like samiakki! at least in the liquor version..
ruphuloid And when you drink enough of the liquor version you will like normal salmiakki :D
CreamCoffee I wouldn't go that far
Non-Nordic you should say, quite a few Swedes live it too, me included ;)
Anthony Bourdains version of Finland episode was horrible. Like Anthony said cold land and full of alcoholists.
But this one is much better. Bizarre food finnish episode make me happy :)
although he is right on alcoholism, there are good things if you are patient enough to look for them, and this guy does is right
Finland is the best country I've visited. Good food, friendly people, nice atmosphere. Truly a pleasure.
I am from the USA but I love the Finnish culture, the Finnish people and the music is larger than life. I dream of seeing Finland one day.
Cheers to the wonderful people of Finland.

It was sarcasm. Cause the recipe is so easy.
You guys should relax and watch the whole episode. He loves the food in Finland
The thing i like about Finnish food culture is that you can see that its not picky. They used all parts of the animal to survive the winter while russia and sweden we're leeching off of them.

Americans say finnish words funny.
Hehhehoo, yes. americas are funs, they easy laugh to, something something
To be fair, most Finnish people sound funny, when they speak English, and this is coming from a Finn.
Finn here. Never in my life have I heard of eating lichen (that stuff reindeers eat), but now that it's mentioned, I'm intrigued by the idea.
Euuw, blood pudding? Happy that I live in Southern Finland. We don't get nasty shit like that in my school :S

i would love to visit Finland. Great episode!
If you ever visit Finland... you should come in winter, go into sauna and from sauna run into snow and then back into sauna...
I've heard about that! Thanks for the suggestion!
Sara Ysmira Keliipaakaua I prefer going to Finland when It's summer. But anyway, welcome to Finland!
Sara Ysmira Keliipaakaua And you have to taste finnish candy called "salmiakki" - I love it :D

Finns don't say it that often. The people who say where they're from are usually Germans, Swedes and Danes
+Trekker88888 Only if the video mentions Finland.
So true. In America it looks like some people are afraid of vegetables or something. In Lithuania as in Finland we treasure fresh food a lot.

Who said that pizza is Egyptian? It's Greek. Later Italians took it, modified it a bit and the result is what we eat today.
Cube8 No, most of us haven't eaten italian pizza. "What we eat today" is an americanization of the Italian pizza, very different.

we have bloodcakes in sweden aswell, had to eat it in school a few times. Ugh.

they focuse on different kind of foods. Andy likes traditions, this guy eats huge portions and kinda-weird food, and Gordon Ramsay sits down, eats a cold factory-made Karjala pastry, spits it out, calls Finns terrible cooks and flies away to go yell at someone else.
Is the arctic circle bit too north in that picture in the beginning? I feel like it should be much southern
I'm doing my erasmus exchange in Tampere now, it's good to see this here, i should try all of them:D
Even so, I almost vomited when the lady said "shuul."
Finns sound like robots when trying to speak English.
Ooh looks like we got a comedian over here!
Omnom, blood brownies aka veripalttu... :o~ Especially when served with lingonberry jam!
I've never had that blood cake thing myself, but I love myself some blood pancakes. Tastiest pancakes ever. ...Spinach pancakes are good, too.
...Now I want to eat some bear. (I've also had reindeer, moose, deer, pheasant... and horse. Horse is good.)
DeltaSilver88 try blood pancakes with vanilla custard and lingonberries or lingonberry jam
Damn that sucks bro! Did you have to eat it when you were in school?
Naturally... I'm not questioning that. But as i said even law here in Finland dictates that population on certain wildlife will be kept in order so that they won't become a danger. And there sure as hell is't a danger that any animal here in Finland would go extinct since we have strict laws governing poacher. So if animal is hunted anyway it is natural and respecting towards the nature to use the meat instead of letting it rot.
i love black pudding/blood sausage/black pudding. Best I've tasted so far is from Stornoway. Soooo good!!!!
Ahhahah! I....I just lost it when he said "Kuupahall" xD
