The Sami originally didn't just live in the Lapland of Finland, Norway and Sweden, they were pushed up north. They didn't have many means to make a living so many were forced to take up reindeer herding. Nowadays, not everyone who herds reindeer are Sami, nor are all Sami reindeer herders. If you meet Sami, do not ask if they are reindeer herders, it's incredibly rude, and would be like asking Native Americans if they work in a casino.

@@einonurminen4108 The Swedish government this year agreed to fund truth and reconciliation commission, Finland and Norway have promised to do the same. Up until 1960s both Norway and Sweden's government had official programs whose sole purpose was to come up with ways to eradicate the Sami, between 1934-1976 Sweden's government forcibly sterilised 63 000 Sami people, mostly women("Sweden pays for grim past" the guardian).
In Finland, Norway and Sweden Sami children were forced into boarding schools and if they spoke or wrote in their own language they were punished.
The Sami have faced oppression for centuries, so they have a reason to be offended. Nobody likes being stereotyped.

There is a mistake, the sami have not been hearding reindeer for centuries but millenia as they are as far as I know the only indigenous people in europe and were there way before the finnic tribes showed up. Its nice the title is "..in finland" but almost nothing there is finnish as the sami are completely different people ethnically.

My guess is that the Sami have been doing that for +2000 years, and humankind have have been doing it for maybe 500.000 years at least... so gory or not... can't really survive with out doing it... if you don't live in the middle of Africa maybe... but they are still doing it and probably done it for 1 million years :-)

funny law about scandinavian raindeer, only sami people can legally own a raindeer, you cant declare yourself sami unless you have married into the family of the tride/culture. they are a very exclusive people and few get to live their lifes. they are also very infamous for making insurenceclaims with their lifestock beeing cause of car accidents as the animals roam freely in the wild
