  • My attempt at a split screen drum comparison, not quite as graceful as I'd hoped.
    Which do you prefer?
DW has a bit more bass in the toms, Sonor as a stronger attack, more bass in the kick.
    Identical sizes - 22x16, 13x9, 16x14.
Ludwig 402 with DW, N&C Cherry with Sonor.
DW has coated G12s on toms and snare, coated g1 on bass
Sonor has coated ambassadors on toms and snare, aquarian vintage medium on bass.

Played dw Collectors for 25 years. 2 years ago I decided to buy an SQ1 6 piece from Long island drum center. I will never play anything but Sonor again!

DW for the snare, Sonor for everything else 👌
    Both are Cadillacs overall tho.

Great video, 2 great kits, 2 different sounds, 2 different woods and they are both Crackin! Who are we to question the man smart enough to own them both, good job!

Very cool! For my taste, the Sonor sounds sweeter, but I would jump at the opportunity to own either kit.

Nice comparison guys. DW for me. I'm not sold on Beech. It would have been interesting to hear the Sonor medium Birch vs the DW Maple.
Suggestion. The ring of the snare and crash and ride cymbals somewhat overwhelmed the toms and bass. Perhaps for a good portion of the demo you could just use the high hat and use a big fat snare mat. Then take the mat off and add the cymbals for an in the mix demo.
Anyway thanks again for taking the time to do this. I'm buying a new set soon and DW is definitely a contender.

Having played and owned both a Sonor SQ2 in Scandinavian Birch and a DW Collectors in Maple, I personally find the Sonor to be a much more enjoyable kit.

If I had a choice I would love the Sonor birch bass drum and DW Maple for the toms.
To my ear Maple toms have more tonal range while the birch toms seem to be more like a one note range, if that makes any sense.
Then again I listen to these drum demos with my phone, which isn't the best source.

I cannot hear any vital difference. In my opinion, all drum makers makes good kits, so choose what you like. I like Yamaha and vintage Premier, and vintage Ludwigs, and Sonor SQ2. I just dont have room for all those kits!😂

The only reason the Sonor sounds thinner is because of the ambassadors
The g12 is a 12 mil the ambassadors is 10mil

For looks, the DW. For the sound that I like, I'll take the DW. That thumping bass and snappy snare are a great contrast. But I'll never own either one. Oh well.

Two different shell designs... the Sonor SQ2 Maple Vintage shell which is very thin with rings would be a fatter sound to go against this thin maple dw with rings... or the DW 333 is a medium shell which is more in line with the this Sonor medium shell on your kit.

Sonor bass drum sounds like it's from Toy R Us. Some call that "Character", but it sounds unpolished to me. The distorted tone of the Sonor floor tom sounds weak.

Can I ask what your view comparing such great kits like
These to the premier elite you have made a video on? I personally
Own one of the new Genista and love it……..always wondering how they compare with other high end kits like these?
    Thanks

      Hiya! Great question.
Honestly, I view the Elite, DW & Sonor all in exactly the same light. The Premier sounds absolutely fantastic. It’s still my favourite kit to gig with, even with these ones in my arsenal.
They all have the same build quality too imo. The only issues with the premier were the Remo UT pinstripe heads it came with and the boxes it shipped in from the factory were not up to standard, I had to replace an FT hoop and one Tom got mashed in transit. Certainly didn’t have that problem with the Sonor!!!

Sonor sorry but DW’s sound like boxes. I owned damn near every brand kit there is and I sold my collector’s series as it was the worst sounding kit I ever owned. I just got a prolite kit and as a Gretsch USA custom die hard the Sonor’s may be winning out.

both kits sound pretty much the same but it depends how you tune the heads. i have a dw collectors and tune it a lot higher than that. with the tuning on those, you might as well play the boxes in which they arrived. i really don't understand that approach at all.
