My attempt at a split screen drum comparison, not quite as graceful as I'd hoped. Which do you prefer? DW has a bit more bass in the toms, Sonor as a stronger attack, more bass in the kick. Had a clients drum in today for a full service. It sounded a bit thin before and the original wires weren’t doing the shell any favours. I cleaned up the shell and hoops, replaced a couple of washers, fitted a new G1 coated batter, Hazy 300 Reso and some 16 strand Puresound Custom wires, and even added a cable tie to the case to make the broken zips easier to use. I came down to the studio to play my new kit. There are only a couple of these worldwide, this is the only one in these lovely, decadent, massive sizes. 22x18, 10x9, 12x9, 13x9 & 16x16, with a 14x6.5 snare. I think they sound fantastic. After 2 years in production I finally received by Highwood Bell Metal snare yesterday 5mm B20 Bronze Shell B20 Bronze Die Cast Hoops Phosphor Bronze Lugs It came with an Aquarian Texture Coated head with a reverse dot. Just got tickets to see Biffy play Vertigo of Bliss all the way through in October which reminded me to finally get around to doing a cover of this massive banger. A couple of ropey bits but overall happy. The video and audio is all one take but iMovie is too shit to handle 7 mins of 60fps video so I had to split it up, which looks weird.

Having played and owned both a Sonor SQ2 in Scandinavian Birch and a DW Collectors in Maple, I personally find the Sonor to be a much more enjoyable kit.
SONOR...but both in the same league...
Sonor sorry but DW’s sound like boxes. I owned damn near revery brand kit there is and I sold my collector’s series as it was the worst sounding kit I ever owned. I just got a prolite kit and as a Gretsch USA custom die hard the Sonor’s may be winning out.

Can I ask what your view comparing such great kits like These to the premier elite you have made a video on? I personally Own one of the new Genista and love it……..always wondering how they compare with other high end kits like these? Thanks
Hiya! Great question. Honestly, I view the Elite, DW & Sonor all in exactly the same light. The Premier sounds absolutely fantastic. It’s still my favourite kit to gig with, even with these ones in my arsenal. They all have the same build quality too imo. The only issues with the premier were the Remo UT pinstripe heads it came with and the boxes it shipped in from the factory were not up to standard, I had to replace an FT hoop and one Tom got mashed in transit. Certainly didn’t have that problem with the Sonor!!!

Played dw Collectors for 25 years. 2 years ago I decided to buy an SQ1 6 piece from Long island drum center. I will never play anything but Sonor again!
Obviously, they both sound phenomenal, but I am part of the DW family and I will choose them over anybody any day of the week they have a sound all to themselves and that sound gives me goosebumps

For looks, the DW. For the sound that I like, I'll take the DW. That thumping bass and snappy snare are a great contrast. But I'll never own either one. Oh well.

Very cool! For my taste, the Sonor sounds sweeter, but I would jump at the opportunity to own either kit.
Being a professional acoustic drummer for many moons I love Sonor and DW.
Not a fan of DW but to sounds better, bass drum is punchier and more attack overall.
I love DW snares but their toms ALWAYS sound like wet cardboard. Sonor kits are 100x better than any DW kit in terms of tone.
Love Premiere. Wish they built 6” thru 18” toms in a thin, 4-ply high quality shell.
I cannot hear any vital difference. In my opinion, all drum makers makes good kits, so choose what you like. I like Yamaha and vintage Premier, and vintage Ludwigs, and Sonor SQ2. I just dont have room for all those kits!😂

DW sounds dead. Well, nothing new.
both kits sound pretty much the same but it depends how you tune the heads. i have a dw collectors and tune it a lot higher than that. with the tuning on those, you might as well play the boxes in which they arrived. i really don't understand that approach at all.
the dw has more highs and more lows. Its maple against beech, maple wins.
I've never gotten hands on one of these, but man, those look like some fun drums!
to my ears: Sonor all day. DW just has nothing special, it's missing any character.
The only reason the Sonor sounds thinner is because of the ambassadors The g12 is a 12 mil the ambassadors is 10mil
Two different shell designs... the Sonor SQ2 Maple Vintage shell which is very thin with rings would be a fatter sound to go against this thin maple dw with rings... or the DW 333 is a medium shell which is more in line with the this Sonor medium shell on your kit.
Also not me being too lazy to look properly and thinking it was two separate guys facing each other.
DW for the snare, Sonor for everything else 👌 Both are Cadillacs overall tho.

Murderously jealous, worldmax make killer snares and shells, not very pricey either considering the domestic alternatives.I want one of the green steel jade tube lug snares ive seen, under 200bux also, but i bet that drumkit wasn't very cheap.
That set sounds so clean. I love it especially since it reminds my favorite drummer Phil Selway, when he used to drum on that kit

I bought a Heavy Rock 9 a few weeks ago. What a monster best snare in the world, I'd say. Got a hazy Ambassador on the bottom and a CS clear on the top. I'm trying my other snares with CS clear on now. I never play with brushes so dunno why I never tried clear batters before
