  • I was sat looking at my big rack of drums and thought it was about time I actually did a video like this.
I recorded each of my snares, in order of how much I paid for them, from lowest to highest. The cheapest cost less than £80 and the most expensive north of £500. I personally think the Premier 1026 at the start sounds as "good" as the Noble and Cooley at the end - it was a fun experiment either way.
Let me know which your favourite is! The 402 will always be the ultimate killer for me.
Drums and details are as follows:
    1. Premier 1026 14x6.5 (CS Dot batter and Puresound super 30s)
    2. Premier 2000 14x5 (Ambasador + stock wires)
    3. Pearl FF brass 14x6.5 (CS Dot + stock wires)
    4. Beverley 21 (Ambassador + Puresound blasters)
    5. Pearl masters custom 14x5.5 (Ambassador + 40 strand Tama wires)
    6. Noonan Purpleheart 12x7 (Ambassador + stock wires)
    7. Ludwig 400 Super Sensitive 14x5 (Ambassador + stock wires)
    8. Premier Heavy rock 9 14x9 (Power Centre Reverse Dot + stock wires)
    9. Ludwig 402 14x6.5 (Ambassador + Pearl 40 strand brass wires)
    10. Noble & Cooley SS Cherry 14x7 (Ambassador + stock wires)
Kick is a Sonor SQ2 Medium Beech 22x16.
HH - Avedis New Beats 14"
Crash - Agop Traditional Original Ride 22"
    Mics:
    Kick: Beta91/Beta92/Homemade Subkick
    Snare: Beta57/SM57
    OH: WA84
    Rooms Cascade Fatheads/Aston Origin

I bought a Heavy Rock 9 a few weeks ago. What a monster best snare in the world, I'd say. Got a hazy Ambassador on the bottom and a CS clear on the top. I'm trying my other snares with CS clear on now. I never play with brushes so dunno why I never tried clear batters before

Thank you for all this work! I liked it because besides the 402, they are all snares that i don't have or ever played. We should all do that with our collection.

The amount of flaking from your drumstick that's hitting the HH is ridiculous. Great snares and good playing!

This is a great video for auditioning that perfect snare! For me though the Noble & Cooley has it, although the Premier 2000 is close, as is the Noonan, for a 13" drum? It is has a really great throaty sound. I also quite like the Pearl Masters Custom and Beverley too! Personally I do prefer a wood shell overall, always found metal shells a little lively?!

I'd agree with this, metal shells are kind of ringy, but I have found with the right heads and tuning you can get the tone to be really pleasing and harmonised with the snare sound then it comes a real positive 0 I achieved this with my HR9, CS clear and hazy bottom lots of tension on the heads and it sounds amazing. Way better than the one is this vid - although I am a rubbish drummer. Shame on me! I'm gonna try a CS clear on my P1 now. I have many of the classic Premiers!

Your HR9 sounded a bit dark and muted what heads are on that? I'm not a Ludwig fan but the 402 sounded best, all your other Premiers sounded really good. The HR9 just doesn't sound like they usually do!
