One last thing: I dont have problems with movies tackling colorism, but when they tackle it, the dark skinned woman is always overweight and the light skinned woman is dainty and cute. To me, this promotes colorism more. They also show the dark skinned woman behaving masculine and the light skinned woman as fierce but desirable and feminine, which furthers the stereotypes more too.

I was so confused as to why they felt it necessary to make A’Lelia out to be lesbian. Did they need that buy-in in order to get the movie financed??? I kept researching on my phone while watching it because it was so ‘in your face’, and couldn’t find anything to support that claim.

Why cant they ever tell black stories that are AT LEAST 50% accurate? Like, it's not that hard. I know these movies are made for entertainment but if you read Madam CJ's real life story, it's actually ALREADY very interesting and entertaining WITHOUT having to manipulate the story. They do this a lot. I liked Hidden Figures, for instance, but was so mad when I later learned they invented a whole white man/savior who didnt exist IRL (Kiefer Sutherland's chatacter). Theres one thing to adjust the story in some areas so it translates on screen, but you literally invented a whole man who is a main supporting character? I will never get over that. To be fair, they change other stories too like the Steve Jobs movie but they usually do that so it can be more entertaining. In black movies, there seems to be an agenda.

So, here's the thing. The person you refer to as Annie Turnbo, a proprietor and educator is more commonly known as Annie Malone. The first Black female millionaire who earned her fortune by selling Black hair care products she invented. After establishing her career, she went on to open a cosmetology school which was also attached to a hotel and uniform manufacturer. She also founded an orphanage which was renamed for her after her death. You are correct, Madam Walker was employed by her.
This in no way diminishes the accomplishments of Madam Walker but it is, as you have noted, important to be as accurate as possible.
While I enjoyed this “inspired by” Netflix series, I’d love to see an actual documentary about Ms. Malone and Ms. Walker. They’re two great, Black successful women. It’s amazing that they were both self-made millionaires. Inspirational.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I enjoyed the series! I loved how they showed that the road to success will never be easy and will require sacrifices but you can't lose sight of your goals. I also liked how even though it showed the lighter skinned woman more desirable etc it also showed how she was not being taken seriously and only being seen as just a pretty face or a prize even to her mother which did bother her although she often used it to her advantage. So it was good to see things from the other perspective.
However, it made me want to research more about the characters and I ended up not liking how Annie Malone was portrayed as I became more aware of her story and how much she contributed to the black community, I wondered how her family felt. When I discovered many more unfactual things it kinda made me look at the series sideways. When people make stories "inspired by" I really wish they would stick as close to the original story as possible. If the colorism thing was not apart of Madam Cj walkers and Annie Malone's story then they shouldn't have made it an issue. But I guess "inspired by and based on" are two different things so we cant be too upset about it? 🤷♀️

Madem CJ Walker had a dream and it came true. The movie was great and Octavia Spencer is a brilliant actress. 👌💯 I just not believing Annie had all that time to stalk Madem majority of the time. Madem was a very important women, but if we read up on Annie life she had a successful business too.

I thought the same thing. I wish it had a more serious/dramatic narrative and kept closer to the true events, her life was big enough to not need to make things up. The trailer is nothing like what I watched, still a good movie though.

But i also don't like how she made him feel small. She was quite selfish on that part. His husband supported her. He even agreed transferring city only to be stepped down by her wife. He was basically excluded in the company when they could have been working together.

Also, Sarah, seemed quite not thankful of annie. She seemed she has no sense of obligation for the help she owed annie. It was annie who helped her from the beginning. But what happened in the movie is she even stole and competed with annie. Which for me is quite troublesome. Seems like she has no debt of gratitute towards people who helped her. Annie Malone was born in my hometown. I found this out several years ago. I hope someone does a movie on her. I didn't like the character Addie Monroe in the series.

The title says “INSPIRED”. Inspired by the the life story of MCJW. If the title was “based on a true story” or another similar title, than I can understand your scrutiny. As an African American I walked away from this movie empowered by MCJW perseverance and sacrifices. Two of the biggest motifs that I got from watching this series is “hard work beats talent and beauty”, along with “self-worth”. I do not think this series creates a space to degrade dark skin women or pin light skin against dark skinned. Sarah wanted to be the spokes person and saleswomen for Annie and was not afforded the opportunity. in the end MCJW not only created her own company but made her adopted grand daughter of dark complexion the face of the company. Setting and creating new beauty standards. Letting the future generations know not to follow trends instead you creative them, know your worth, and beauty comes in many forms (e.g. the series exalting the African American community in Harlem for their diverse looks that challenged the southern status quo beauty standards). I do not think the additional fictitious story lines within this series hindered MCJW’s legacy. It’s not possible. MCJW is solidified in American History as a entrepreneur, activist, millionaire, and so much more to not of the African American community but the world. Now what did hurt the movie was Tiffany Haddish. My opinion
This is a spectacular review!!!! My thoughts exactly, while I don't support lies, the overall meaning was meant to empower and uplift. I don't like the portrayal of A'Lelia because it isn't true, but what is true is that she was very supportive of the LGBTQ community, and I think this is why they forced it in the series.

My grandmother comes from generations of lighter skin blacks...when she was growing up her family was very strict on "keeping the blood line pure" you could not have children or marry a dark skin man...i dont blame her because thats what she was taught. People not to long ago was told not to date or associate with darker skin girls...families who was lighter skin told their children who was light like them that they came from premium stock....so i can honestly see how the colorism could have been accurate

So, I guess the “Inspired by the Life of” doesn’t mean anything, huh? I don’t know that I would call these lies as much as I would call it taking creative license. Also, let’s be honest, if the movie didn’t have an antagonist, a mother-daughter conflict and some good old glitz and glamour, would you watch it? I guess I prefer to see this movie as a great message to women, especially women of color, that you can achieve your dreams if you’re willing to work for it, regardless of what nay-sayers think. Oh and one last thing, I think the issue colorist among the Black community, which still exists today, served the plot very well.

You make very good points. Hollywood definitely exaggerates for effect, that's nothing new. But I think it would have been better if they'd made up a completely new character to be her antagonist, instead of misrepresenting the character of Annie Malone (only slightly changing her name), who actually helped Walker, and gave her her start in the business. Same with her daughter. If she wasn't a lesbian, but just "gay friendly" as people keep saying, that's how she could have been portrayed. That could have created mother-daughter tension, especially in those days. Why change the character of a real person who is no longer here to dispute it? (rhetorical question-not actually asking you to answer that :-) )

In order to make Madame C.J. Walker the hero of the series they had to make her husband CJ & Addie Monroe her rivals/ bad guys.
Right, she had to have adversaries. I just think in reality, there were real, actual factual adversaries that she had to deal with.
Honestly when I saw “INSPIRED by the life of madame CJ Walker” I already knew they were gonna feed us some bull. That being said it was enjoyable and I appreciate black people working. I didn’t like the pitting two women against each other like they always do. Frankly I would’ve enjoyed Madame fighting against being under estimated as a woman way more than her fighting against another woman just the way they portray the story of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Also, if they were going to lie so much then change the characters names and just make it a fictional story we still would’ve watched and enjoyed it and it wouldn’t be in the shadow of a real person. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is based off of real characters like Joan Rivers but because they didn’t make it a biography you don’t have to live up to someone so big and offend so many people.
I watched the movie and enjoyed it. But to advertise it to be true is very damaging to all. True history shouldn't be distorted. That's the problem now with our history.

It wasn’t a documentary, and there was singing and dancing in it so it’s a movie not to be taken so literally. She really did live next door to Rockefeller here in NY I went to the home someone lives there now.
I agree. The movie was inspired by her story so its obvious the film would dramatize somethings for entertainment purpose.
I understand it’s not a documentary but they still took a lot of liberties with this movie. More than usual. Plus, you have to understand that alot of people don’t read and research for themselves so they will take this whole movie as gospel. I always do my own research, but many don’t.
I see this argument a lot. A documentary is not 100% based in fact. There is also some guess work and dramatic license in documentaries. This issue here was not if it was a documentary or a series inspired by or based on historical figures, it's what they chose to dramatize and take liberty with to suit certain agendas. I think this is widely known.

I've never seen her in a serious role so I'll try not to judge before seeing it but in real life, Octavia and Tiffany are only 6 years apart. I just feel like Tiffany has been shoved down our throats for over a decade when there are so many talented black actresses out there who get no screen time. I was very interested in the story of Madame CJ Walker and was looking forward to the docu-series, but this series seems to be very fabricated. Few things that I found to be irrelevant and exaggerated. Why was it important to add that her daughter was a lesbian. Is that even true or was that part of the deal they had to make to do the movie/put on Netflix. Hmm? I also did not agree how they portrayed blackman/blackwoman relationships. Always putting them against each other, promoting that feminist vibe. Her husband CJ was a good man from what I can see. He gave her his all even when she degraded him. He wasn't trying to take over or be in charge he just wanted to feel like they had a partnership, they were in it together. Then to portray her as the victim when he went astray was disingenuous. She had a major part to play of their marriage falling apart. Why couldn't we have a series that highlighted her and the accomplishments she achieved period. I can't sit my kids down to watch this and learn something because of all that extra stuff they put in there. Re-do please.
I think the real deal is we often talk about dispelling stereotypes about black people in media yet apparently there are aspects of this series that keep perpetuating those stereotypes. As far as the creative liberties, this is a good time especially if you have young people to take opportunity to discuss the truth vs fiction because everyone unfortunately don’t understand “inspired by” .

Right! Just like in the movie Hidden Figures, which was also a phenomenal movie, but too had fictitious parts. The times we see Taraji running around and across the buildings just to go to the colored bathroom was entirely made up as well. Katherine Johnson said so in an interview that she did not have to do that. She just simply went to the restroom in her work area. Parts made up simply for dramatic effect, but did that make the movie any less good because it was untrue? People really need to lighten up and quit picking apart stuff just because.
The issue is, that young, impressionable minds may not be able to separate face from fiction. Is factual black history being taught in the school systems? I doubt it. This may be the only exposure they get to our history, and to see it twisted for entertaining purposes is sad. Isn't the factual history encouraging and inspiring enough?
They should've changed the names then. You most of the same names and likelinesses and then weave lies throughout these real people's stories and expect people to receive it as fairytale.

I actually loved the series it wasn't perfect but I liked it...However after I did my own research I really disliked there treatment of Annie.... they could have handled her story so much better ....or at the very least make the corrections at the end of the movie to show how amazing Annie really was
The movie was extremely triggering. Hearing the words “you’ll do anything to look like me come out of the mouth 👄 of a light skin woman” was really hard to watch. I’m wise enough to know that Annie may not have been depicted accurately!!!! BUT LETS NOT ACT LIKE COLORISM BETWEEN WOMEN WAS NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!! We can’t be delusional to think otherwise 🤦🏾♀️
I would LOVE to see an accurate documentary about Madame C.J. Walker too. I enjoy watching and learning the facts about people and how they actually lived without the lense of today's ideals forced upon the vision of who they really were. She was a true hero of black history's entrepreneurial spirit. By putting her face on her products she decried the notion that dark skin or African features were not beautiful. She MADE them beautiful, acceptable, and essential for all women of color. Her strong advertising campaign worked successfully to her advantage but also helped inspire black women from every walk of life. This intimate act was empowering!

I believe that's why it says Inspried by life of Madam CJ Walker because it's not a autobiography it's a tv series for entertainment.

I'm not a relative of Annie Malone and I was upset about how she was portrayed. I thought that the colorism storyline was baffling and unnecessary. Now that I understand that there actually *was* a colorism issue from Bundles's book that the movie *could* have discussed, but they rewrote it at the expense of Annie Malone's legacy, I'm even more offended.

Thanks for this!! I couldn't get through the first episode without being tuned off. I get it was for "entertainment" but it was not the best tribute to the Icon Madem CJ WALKER. Our ancestors deserve THE BEST AND TRUTH that they lived in.
The colorism theme was injected to show that Madam Walker had to learn to embrace her Afrocentrique beauty rather than the European standard that was embraced at the time. While that was a nice lesson to interject. There's no record of it being true. Plus Addie Munroe was actually great in her own right and accomplished amazing things which there was no portrayal of that in the movie.
So pushing colorism, homosexuality, the “overbearing, angry, black woman” stereotype Sounds about how they try to tell our stories....

Devils advocate: Being married multiple times doesn’t mean you’re exclusively straight, s/o to Andrew Gillum-obviously she wouldn’t be able to marry a woman back then. She could’ve dabbled in the lady pond in between marriages. Now, was that an integral part of the story? I think not. If they were trying to explain why A’Leilia didn’t have a biological child/heir, I think it could’ve been much simpler-some women can’t have children or want them-the end, that storyline went absolutely no where. Kinda reminded me of the Color Purple (you know, before the “gay agenda”) where Shug and Ceily had a sexual relationship.

There is an organization here in St. Louis that tells the Story of Annie (Monroe) Malone (Annie Malone Historical Society) and Madame CJ Walker. They did a play about her life and her relationship with Madame CJ Walker. It tells that Annie Malone was devastated because she (Walker) had taken some of her hair care secrets when she (Walker) left. Annie Malone was a millionaire before CJ Walker, but yet because of her fame, she is called the first black millionairess.
