Worst Video Game Franchise Ever? - Rise and Fall Of The Culling
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 июл 2024
- The Culling is a first-person action battle royale game developed and published by Xaviant that has gone down in history as potentially one of the most mismanaged and worst video game franchises of all-time.
The Culling initially was popular, but in the wake of two other battle royale games, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale, the player base for The Culling waned.
What happened to The Culling? This is a tragic story of wasted potential and mismanagement that ultimately led to the franchise's downfall.

While it initially had a lot of potentials, a series of bad decisions, mismanagement, and a horrendous launch are just a few reasons why The Culling may just be the worst video game franchise of all-time. What have been some of the "worst" games that you've played recently?
Hey the end of the video isn't exactly accurate, the culling origins WAS released on PC! You can visit the steam page and even see it for yourself. In the end it doesn't matter much, but saying it was only on the xbox one isn't the entire story. Other than that, great video!
League of Legends. It only gives me suffering but I go back to it over and over
Not really recent, but FarCry New Dawn was a huge disappointment. Barely any content in a game with a lacking story and almost all reused assets. Damn. That was a waste of money.
@@adcrengar9877 Haha just like me and my ex! *sobs*
@abdikeur ouch, I felt that.
An excellent summary. Particularly the part about the developers continually changing the formula and implementing all feedback, regardless of the wisdom behind it. This was such a colossal failure on Xavients part. It felt as though they lacked a vision and just scrambled to change everything on a whim.
Just to provide an example, they were (apparently) not pleased with the tactic, where those who got lucky early would hide with good weapons. So they put a stacking stat increase on any kill - including running speed.
It shouldn't take a genius to see what consequences that would have.
Those who led with a 2-3 kills would get an immediate leg up, causing the effect to snowball. By kill 5-6 they were almost untouchable, since their movement speed let them just kite people. By the time the finale came around, the guy with 9 kills was basically running so quickly he could move to safe distance and heal at his pleasure. It was though you were fighting a cheater.
Overnight it killed all variety in the fighting. No more traps or stealth. You either ran around like a headless chicken trying to find the trident, body armor, and 6-7 kills, or just be murdered in the finale by the guy that did.
Only 1 like? Hi Womble, I'm a big fan
Something something Galapagos finches
YO HOLY SHIT WOMBLE I DID'T EXPECT TO FIND YOU HERE
Didn't expect for womble to said something serious
Admit it soviet, you don't want to play culling because you lose with your little brother
😂😂😂😂

I like how the only person online at the end of the culling 2 was Cr1RiKaL recording his video to say how bad the game was

I remember all the youtubers playing this game.
Yeah! Like SSUNDEE and shit lol

It's ironic that the absolute last player on the servers was also a big actor in the hunger games. I guess he truly did win
LOL
bro I was literally about to search up what actor and then it hit me lmao
Remember watching Charlie's video on this, yeah it does really sound like a front for money-laundering tbh.
Cr1TiKaL makes great content.
Yes
I swear to god this channel is just a 100x better TheScoreEsports and yet it has a fraction of the subscribers. Love the consistency and quality of content! :D
The Score used to be like this one. Then they got corporate and have mandated multiple daily uploads and you get the drama alert it is now.
Really praying Akshon dosent fall down the same hole.
@@richter9485 ong the score just makes money milking twitch drama and egging it on. The xQc video says it all.
TheScoreEsports was a good channel, until they started leaning towards twitch drama and less about esports.

this was such a good game just a shame it died...
Seems like it was murdered
Dude I loved playing this but I you go on know all severs are offline
Yeah I enjoyed this game 😒 was my favourite BR by far
@@melaniedownton433 theres a similar game being made by a single dev called retail royale its pretty funny
7:06 Ah yes,Charlie-the last man standing.
😂
I don’t know this Charlie you speak of only Big Moist
I enjoyed this game so much, but then stopped playing a forgot about it. It is so sad to see what happened to it.
When I first saw this title I didn't know what the culling was. After a couple minutes I was like, "oh yeah, it's that game that was popular for a month before I forgot it entirely."
It's funny hearing the line "PUBG's art style"
They were both effectively asset flips.
I think that for origins they simply thought "Well everyone hates us already anyway so let's see what we can get away with."
Origins had weird stuff though such as the bunkers with the scribbled writing such as “You have to remember…” all over the walls with the piles of gas and robots sitting in chairs. The game seemed good with it’s lore but no one seemed to pick up on it
This is such a dead game with greedy developers.
My earliest memory of the culling is: being chased and murdered by the hamburgerlar outside of a prison.
Nice
😂
DUDE! I remember binging H2O delirious “The Culling” videos a long time back. “The Culling” used to be my favorite game, but I’ve completely forgotten about it until now.
i really miss playing this game with my friends back in the day
I used to love the culling when it 1st came out especially the funny lines the announcer would say when the others died xD
It’s crazy how this failed franchise was a br pioneer
they didnt pioneer it tho
i remember watching gameplay of it.. i legit forgot how unique it was back then as a br
The Culling was HDDVD, everything else was blu-ray.
I would LOVE to see you do a video on Amazon Game Studio's Breakaway. To this day it's my favorite game I have ever played I think, and I'm terribly sad it never saw production. I would LOVE it if another studio made their own version of a moba brawler sports focused game. I was in show matches with the devs, and miss that game so damn much...
Can you do an “Ashkonpedia: what is an off-angle?” Please. I need this knowledge
it realistically doesnt need a video, basically off angles are peeking angles that arent commonly known or used, think through the crack of a railing, next to a box, etc. not the most in depth explanation but it should be a good basic understanding
Okay, off angles are just angles that your team, or the map, isnt putting damage into. For instance, positioning on high ground shooting to the side of the enemies while the main teamfight is going on from a different angle. It's a good way to get damage in
When the game first came out, it had so much potential, but the amount of fuk ups they did is unreal lmao, holyshit.
it’s a shame that games like the culling and sos died when they had great potential, sos tried to be a battle royale when the ffa or team up aspect was unique and the culling slowly died out due to developers getting greedy
TL:DR- Doesn't know how to make a healthy playerbase and Corporate greed
It actually doesn't sound like corporate greed. It's a weird amalgamation of bad and outdated ideas.
Their monetization of The Culling Origins is fine. It's just that that monetization system died in the 90s with arcades.
Their BR was fine. It's just that it was fine very early in the BR genre's lifespan so when they tried to keep doing it, they failed.
The Culling is what happens when you don't innovate, and when you do, you do it poorly.
@@downsjmmyjones101 What's BR?
@@g0ddish434 Battle Royale as in the genre of game.
This game's development was a master class in what NOT to do with your live service game/franchise. And a lot of its stuff that you would think you wouldnt have to tell a businessman to do or not do (maybe dont create a product in an over-saturated market thats literally just a worse version of what people can get elsewhere for free or very cheap).
An over-saturated market? At the time, The Culling was pretty much the only battle royale at its height.
@@Beevee Referring to the Culling 2 abandoning everything that made the first unique and delivering a worse version of a product that everyone already had.
The first game was killed by a different set of bad ideas. Twice.
I actually enjoyed this game in a free weekend, except for the fact that you’d get matched against teams while playing solo. Anyone who played this game knows how borderline impossible it is to win a 2v1 against people who have more than 1 second of playtime.
This is just genuinely sad...
It’s sad because the concept of a small, Rust/Ark-type BR actually sounds really cool. But the pay to play model was the final nail in the coffin. :/
No franchise will ever take #1 spot for worst away from Madden. EA has worked hard to earn that spot
Could you do a video on the Trackmania series next? It has a surprisingly large community surrounding it, and there are several in-game tournaments and championships for many of the games to this day.
Yeah, Wirtual is really cool.
It's a real shame to see the downfall that followed what was probably one of my favourite games on xbox. I wasn't a pc player or aware of how big the original was on twitch. I stumbled across the game at like 9pm, got hyped as it downloaded and called in sick the next day as I stayed up all night playing it. The crafting system was good and everything ran smooth but what got me the most was no two games were ever the same. I remember getting a shitty start against a duo who "perked" for early game while i perked for mid to late. I had to be creative as they were chasing me down. Ended up crafting snares on the run and a spear. Snared a few door entrances to this complex, jumped out and blew up the gas canister and they were getting stuck on the snares running up the stairs inside. One of them made it out of the gas and ran away from me, his friend died. I ended up meeting him at the end of the game and although he narrowly beat me.. I just fucking loved the overall vibe. Felt like hunger games.
i remember falling in love with the culling through watching tru3ta1ent play it & i got really invested in his videos on it. i would watch them when i got home from freshman year of high school a lot. seeing it decline made me beyond sad, even though i never played it. the videos just suddenly stopped & i had to find out why through asking in twitch chat, & everyone agreed the game was broken & in a horrible spot. i'll always remember the connection i had to this game though
Bruh early culling was so fun with ppl theory crafting builds. Loved the tazer machete backstab combo
I hate how much I loved this game back then, as much as it hurt to see the game getting worse and going the absolute wrong way it was still worth it since I've made a great friend back then who's still with me.
SOS: The Ultimate Survival was a game that took a similar path, but the developers didn’t bother listening to feedback. They tried jumping on the BR train when their game wasn’t meant for it
Man this was a good game too. I’ve never played it but I LOVED watching people play it on RUclips. I wonder if there even are any hunger games-esque melee battle royal games.
I was thinking about making a game like The Culling, but set in a fantasy RPG universe. Is there any obvious pitfalls I should avoid (besides the ones listed in this video)?
Id focus on balanceing and listen to the community but still go for your own goal
This game was so fun. It really FELT like you were in the Hunger Games. It was scary, I loved that you could look up in the sky-scoreboard and see how everyone was doing and see if there was anyone you needed to watch out for. And the melee focus was the cherry on top to make it feel like a truly unique experience. Sad to see how they massacred my boy
I remember having so much fun playing this game in 2016. Sad how it turned out
What about sos the island battle royal where you needed to get stuff to exfill but only few can get on
Man I loved this game, I still think about it now and again.
My memory of this was, The Culling came out and shortly after that, Ark released Survival of the Fittest as a standalone free game, which is more or less the same thing as The Culling but in Ark. I was always under the impression that this is what killed The Culling early on.
I remember how many streamers played this game.. shroud was the most famous one to play this but when pubg got released goddamn he immediately head out and started his career on pubg
The ending of this video is a bit off. Origins wasn't just for xbox, it was the release after the failure of the culling 2. The "Day one" culling you talked about was a separate download. They ran the original game on their test servers and released origins. Something like that.
Damn I loved this game like the first week it was out, I even made a joke video on it abusing stupid bugs in the game. The melee combat is so much more interesting than gunplay on other BR. Within a week the game I knew was completely different, my favorite perks removed and the traps I once placed now bugged or changed.
I miss this game sm. We need a br with more crafting, when I first started the culling I sucked. But if I got good at traps and used my smarts to kill high lvl players. So many different play styles.
This reminds me of S.O.S :(
Actually can you make a video on SOS?
me and my friend had so much laughers in this game it was incredible fun for us... so many ways to troll enemies.
OG Funhaus played this game and I had a blast watching. Now Culling and Funhaus are pretty much dead...
Feelsbadman
Used to love this game when it launched
I really want the first old school The Culling back where you can fight people with basically only bows, melee and very few guns. I really miss how the melee fighting mechanics worked and also the crafting, healing and selling mechanics. This game was amazing at first and I really hope someone revives it from the dead. I misssssss this gameeeee plzzz someone bring it back.
I still miss this game. There's no BR with melee combat where you can chill in the woods and craft traps. I'm not sure why, it sounds like a good concept to me.
Notification gang 😎
Yes
Per gli italiani... I video di Yotobi e del Gatto su questo gioco... Quanto erano belli?!
I remember watching these videos adoring whatever happens this is what sparked me to love BR games in the first place. Even though h1z1 recognize the genre for me this made me want more.
Plus i never knew the reasons until i heard about it like rn.
I remember watching this game and wanting to play it so bad but forgetting about it bc I started playing over watch. Thennn there goes today me remembering this game and finding out that it died / as well as their sequel:0
I wish more br’s had that crafting aspect that is sick
Eternal Return: Black Survival
The new fort season lmao
Apex. (:
@@heavenly2k I play apex but I mean specifically able to craft more things and weapons and stuff ya know
This reminds me so much of Ark SOTF. Which was an ark mod that was straight up hunger games and with dinosaurs. Released right around if not before the culling.
The biggest problem was probably game length. Cause I think games typically took 30-60 minutes Because normal Ark is very time consuming Grundy game normally.
Would've been the best BR of it's time if the Devs put effort into it.
Let this be a lesson to all...
It's more important being good than being first.
used to play this game back during it's brief golden age, eventually grew bored of it and never even heard about the culling 2 and all the horrible updates until long after when I had already moved on to other games lol
I remember very very vaguely youtubers playing this. Only after seeing gameplay did it trigger the memory lol
I also think another factor in the decline of The Culling is that it was heavily inspired by The Hunger Games. Which had its last film in November 2015, and the Culling was released in March of 2016. The Hunger Games had more fans back then than it does now, so fans of The Hunger Games would have played the Culling. But while the Hunger Games has had new book installments in 2020, it does not have the brand power it once did. Furthermore, rules for how the Games work in the Hunger Games kind of don't translate as well to video games, whilst modern BR games have come up with their own mechanics.
Should do a video over hyperscape and how fast it failed

Paying to play per match? What is this a 2014 mobile game?
i remember this game being so good and fun didn't even know all of this happened until i checked if i could download the game and it said unavailable
Hey I admire their balls to monetize actually playing a match. See if people would actually do it. People pay for all sorts of pointless shit they don't need so honestly hats off for actually going for it and testing the waters. How else would you know.
Never heard of it( if that is their main poster it look like a character from MK10 (boraka)
you should make a why tribes ascend failed video
The only person I've watched played this game was SovietWomble and I thought that it would be a really good game. I've never really played it and I don't know that this game has fallen
Can you do a video on evolve?
I dont remember this game, I only recall some game that made you pay per match you played. What a dumb concept, it's not an arcade cabinet, who wants to pay to play a game match by match?
It better be long engaging games, super balanced (not only in meta but sbmm) and give out limited time loot for winning. It's the only way I could possibly think a pay per match title would have a chance of holding up.
The Culling would be so fun if it was a survival like rust
I have very fond memories of playing the first early acess iteration of the Culling. Sad that every update made the game way worse.
honestly i feel like it could still be a unique thing compared to other big BR titles even now. seeing how this feels more like a melee-centered survival type BR, than just your usual loot and shoot BR.
I miss the old days of the culling where there was so many bugs and you can run faster with brass knuckles because of leg day so many good memories. But they fucked it up and now I’m sad :(. It was a good game too but good thing don’t always last forever
somebody made a fan remake of this game on ROBLOX, it's called survival of the fittest
ive played this game in duo with my brother in2016/2017 and it was a ton of fun like a ton , im sad that it end this way :(
Blackout on cod 4 came out at the same time too
well, that was one hell of a dumpster fire
When I first played this game my friend told me about it it was pretty fun I hope it somehow returns with another culling
3:35 - I can think of another game that made eerily similar mistakes...
9:00 ...What?!
Oh. and I'd never heard of The Culling.
Amazed I was able to get the 1000g in that game. It was so bad
I missed this game, and i saw it is being sold for money now, idk if anyone plays it anymore.
Did the developers advertise the game properly? I never heard of the game before.
the game turned into a survival horror game after a while. the only people that played it were people that played non stop so they were really good and they released a killer clown costume that those people would use. every time i decided to play it again it would just be everyone getting murdered by a killer clown
i wonder if bot matches are still available to play at the day 1 client
I really want to see you guys talk about a failed game called Spacelords
I loved The Culling. It was really fun to skillfully beat somebody that had better weapons than you. There were a lot of things to like and I sometimes crave the feeling I got playing it. Such a missed opportunity.
Dark Soul BR! I want it so bad! Also mage builds would still be the meta.
thats a name I havn't heard in years
I loved this game back then. Played for a good while then got on one day and it was just gone
I really enjoyed watching streamers play early the Culling. The game was pretty intense. I feel the focus on visceral and brutal melee combat + crafting/setting traps is still unlike anything in the BR market.
Only few remember ???
Only few have chance to play, and million remember how amazing the launch.
The first battle royal i'd ever played.
