She even got to experience the terror of that blade starting to drop. The only thing the scene stopped short of was actually killing her (and thus killing Lyra). And frankly this is so much more satisfying than it was in the book. In the book she escapes before she’s forced in that fateful chair and then sneaks in to try to stop the device going off. In the series, they really force her to experience that same terror that those children felt up until the last possible moment. The only differences are that the terror she feels is more for her child than herself and that the severing would have just killed her.

Because the technology they were using for kids was designed to keep them alive as much as they could. This was not intended to separate daemons from humans, just to power the bomb.
