One of my favourite scenes between these two which even impressive is the fact this didn’t happen in the book. Not exactly like this. The writing from BBC and how they adapted Asriel and Marisa’s relationship was nothing short of masterful. We have the clash of egos in this scene. Asriel’s fanatical mission vs Marisa’s need for power. Both are just as intelligent but complete megalomaniacs. I think what this scene does well is display their egos but also their weaknesses. Marisa’s is her love for Lyra and what she will do for her. Asriel’s is emotion in general. When he is removed from Marisa and Lyra he is stoic and powerful but when exposed to people he deep down cares for, he becomes vulnerable, which he despises! BBC, James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, you’re awesome❤
This explains it so well. I'm not 100% sold on the changes to the end of their arcs (especially the missing Midnight chapter conversation) but I can definitely see what the writers were trying to do here. It's so hard to adapt a book that consist of extensive exposition and internal monologues/perspectives but Wilson and McAvoy can show so much on their faces it's magnificent.
You understand that he is still the bad guy for asking that, right? They're both possessive, controlling, and broken people who have left a string of corpses and broken lives in their wake.
@@gretagill Ma Costa was good, but after finding Billy and knowing that Marisa was responsible, I think she distanced herself from Lyra. Like the idea that while she was taking in another woman’s child, the same woman was murdering her own.
As someone who haven’t read the books, this scene was so intense. Like, are they going to hurt each other? Kiss? Confess their love/hatred? Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy played Marisa and Asriel’s complicated relationship so well, I genuinely wish we got to see more of them- or even better, how they’d be “better parents” to Lyra should they were given the chance (though, I can’t really see them living in a mundane life),
As someone that has read the books, let me tell you: they're exactly the same in the books. It's always a "will they bite off each other's tongues while kissing?"
Ruth Wilson could read a phone book and I would watch her do it happily . There is NOTHING she has performed in that I don't love her performance. Mostly I forget she is performing and just believe she is the character.
OMG when he says “I’ve sacrificed so much” at 1:02, his voice a whisper. Let’s just be honest and say that if this series was so great, it was for how James and Ruth portrait these two faulty parents. This is by far the best scene in the whole show - along, of course, with their final meeting in season 1.
(Spoilers for season 3!) I remember reading the book, and feeling utterly heartbroken. Right before the final battle, they both acknowledge that they should have raised Lyra, with even Mrs Coulter saying, 'We should have raised her ourselves', and then them agreeing that this battle is to keep their daughter safe. IT WAS SO SAD!
I recently started watching this series and it is absolutely mesmerising to watch! The attention to details, sets and plot development is so wonderful to follow. This scene is probably a huge spoiler but it was so well acted I did not care:) Ruth Wilson is magnificent as Mrs Coulter..
James mcavoy is a very talented actor he can change his personality to a comidian a dark person a normal person wish him all luck I would cast as lex luthor or 17th dr who and list can goes
The twisted thing is how these two are really the only possible match for the other. Both so intelligent and stubborn, and both so psychologically messed up in different ways; no one knows either of them as well as the other (besides their daemons of course).
"... didn't create anything. Not you or I..." You or ME! It's an object! You wouldn't say "he didn't create I!" I swear, this weird campaign against the word "me" is a disease.

yea... but still good tho @@deejones0071
The fact that lyra’s best parent figures have been anyone but her parents
this is ma costa erasure

@@aethei8560 - Ma Costa didn't distance herself from her. Lyra had a different path that Ma Costa couldn't follow.
MA COSTA SHE HAS TWO
I’ll acknowledge ma costa

It's even better that this scene was not in the book (or at least not to this extent).
As someone that has read the books, let me tell you: they're exactly the same in the books. It's always a "will they bite off each other's tongues while kissing?"
Love the fact, that this scene is more from the theatre than nowadays a tv series.
Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy are just outstanding👏👏👏
Sheez James McAvoy is one of the most compelling actors of his generation ❤
Ruth Wilson could read a phone book and I would watch her do it happily . There is NOTHING she has performed in that I don't love her performance. Mostly I forget she is performing and just believe she is the character.
I am 28 years old.
I will never be 29...
I Am The Pretty Thing was such a slow movie, yet haunted me FOR months.
This series exposed so much that went over so many heads! One of the best shows EVER
Just here to watch Ruth’s and James’ superb acting! 👏🏼👏🏼 Hope they will have a movie together.

What a wonderful series, a huge thank you to everyone involved!
@SEEK THE TRUTH! Wow, are comments from the Magisterium a feature on this page?
“Why can’t just be what I want you to be?” DID HE REALLY SAID THAT TO HER. He is the worst!!!!
Unfortunately that thought happens in every failed relationship

Their scenes are electrifying… they’re astonishingly good.

I can’t tell who’s the worse parent.
Damn she was right Asriel is a failure for a father
Ruth Wilson knocks it out the park for me
Two incredible actors !
Impressive Dialogue .. well done
I love him ❤
Great series, loved it so much!
God he's brilliant.
"Every hideous thing you've ever done in His name... and it was all a lie."
I don't get how James McAvoy manage to have chemistry with a lot of actors/actresses.
oh lord this scene,,,
James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson
If you say that one more time...
what happened to the frame rate?
Which episode was this in
Season 3 episode........6?
Well, the best actor/actress in the world is Meryl Streep.
The second best? Without contest - Ruth Wilson.
Happy New Year 2023 🇮🇩🏴🇬🇧
Lord Asriel

You or ME! It's an object! You wouldn't say "he didn't create I!"

The only good scenes in season 3 were of those two. Sad ending, no peace of soul forever:-(
💖
They weren't bad books. I don't particularly like the series though, for some reason.
She has a mouth like marge Simpson

I'm distracted by her upper lip. It sticks way out.
Not as far our as women with fillers.
🙄
I agree with the replies. I like her. She's a very good actor it's just the lip thing.
