Why do you persist in discussing climate issues (and even terrorism, migration, and risk of pandemics)without addressing overpopulation as the core of these problems?
@@Rediva19 It's unfortunate, but we take for granted our cooperation in society. Sexual Reproduction is the strongest instinct that humans have. I quit listening c. 1:21:00 out of frustration at the lack of intelligent discussion. Prof. Krauss assured us at the intro that he pulled no punches. Yet I don't recall the term "American imperialism" being uttered once. Mr. Frum's claim that America has been promulgating democracy and wealth internationally is ridiculous merely by examining two centuries of Yankee invasions and coups in Latin America from the Monroe Doctrine to the present day. I quit trying to keep track of all the naivete and outrageous comments, but one unchallenged statement by Frum stands out. He said he thought the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was worth a try because perhaps we could make it a better country. Actually that invasion constituted the international war crime of aggression. That is literally the same crime for which we hanged Nazis at Nuremberg.

Being on the so-called left does not insulate you from having cruelty in your personality (may not be an exact quote): First, naturally no one is immune to having cruelty inside. We all have some. Second, I am eager to see some examples of leftist cruelty. I have always identified as a lefty of some kind, though the meaning of that is becoming unclear and fading before my eyes now. Nevertheless, that was my public presentation. And my image of cruelty in politics was always associated with the right. Of course if you cite Stalin, I perceive massive cruelty. But I never thought of Stalin as a "lefty." In a sense of course he was. But I doubt that David Frum has Stalin in mind, so I would like to hear an example of a cruel person "on the left." I just hope he has a good one. The story of his mother and the LSAT is terrifying! Getting rid of the Electoral College would unravel the US? Guess what -- it unravelled tonight, February 13, 2021.
Left: Egalitarian, collectivist, socialist, democratic, utopian. Right: Non-egalitarian, individualist, capitalist, authoritarian, dystopian. Being on the left or on the right is based on a person's personality type, determined at birth or shortly after. Similarities exist in faces and in body language, even body type, as well as brain patterns of activity among people who have the same personality type. For example, just by looking at your profile picture and by reading the comment above, I can see that you are an INTP personality type: someone who values truth and logic above all else, is curious, intuitive, creative, introverted, kind, peace-loving, easy-going and selfless. half of all personality types are light (egalitarian, left-wing), the other half are dark (selfish, right-wing), and we are born this way. Having this in mind, it makes sense that we don't see cruelty coming from the left in the same way we see it coming from the right. As politics becomes more transparent and consistent, false narratives such as authoritarian communism or democratic capitalism are fading away, and politics is ever more clearly divided into authoritarian capitalists and democratic socialists. Stalin was as much a socialist as Trump is democratic; both are right-wing dark personalities who thrive on creating and presenting false narratives and alternative facts. Light personalities: INTP, ISTJ, INFJ, ISFP, ESTP, ENTJ, ESFJ, ENFP. Dark Personalities: ENTP, ESTJ, ENFJ, ESFP, ISTP, INTJ, ISFJ, INFP. Categorizing personalities into dark and light is my personal finding, based on more than ten years of research and observation. Nothing else explains how all societies are divided into left and right movements, and why similar people (both in appearance and in mentality) cannot have opposing political principles and priorities. People don't switch sides, feel alienated from the other side, and the gap is expanding, because there is an underlying logical dichotomy in play.
It seems to me that carbon sequestration is quite a long way from being as affordable as carbon emission reduction We cannot even eliminate increasing emissions, let alone significantly reduce emissions So carbon sequestration is out of the question Comparing climate change to Covid.. we are in about the same covid situation that we faced in early January In other words, we are very far from coming to terms with the severity of the problem as other than a remote and questionable threat

Gteat debate....good point..w/o cheney and his carlye group the world would be a better place
Dang right I could listen for 5 hrs.
Very deep and good discussion.
Want those glasses Lawrence!
said my wife,... XD
How long was this great interview BEFORE the edits?
Man I loved that conversation, thanks !
Fantastic interview.
I listened and other than being against Trump, I don't think he's changed much at all.
And being against Trump at this point in 2020. is such a low bar, it's like a bare minimum showing the person isn't a psychopath or an insane fascist.
@Kevin Tewey My candidate was Bernie Sanders, but better Joe Biden than Kim Jong Un's stan.
In fact it'd be hard to find a worse human than Trump. Other than a Trump supporter in 2020. of course.
Like, I emphasize the year because some folks who voted for Trump in 2016. I can understand, but those who still support him, are the Taliban as far as I'm concerned.
@Kevin Tewey Nope, I'm listening to what Trump is saying and watching what he's doing.
@Kevin Tewey In English please?
@Kevin Tewey Voting for Biden won't accomplish all I want, but it will at least return some semblance of normalcy as well as stop this relentless assault on the republic, democracy, science and common sense.
Given the damage done in 4 years, I think it's quite possible that another 4 years of this insanity could lead to irreparable damage.
It is absolutely not normal to have to worry about whether the president will accept the election results or not and yet here we are. Turned into a third world autocracy in just a few short years.
@Kevin Tewey What's not of use in today's crisis is Trump's idiocy.
My state has voted by mail for years without problems! But late coming info can change votes!
Yes, keep talking. We're just trying to avoid the damn virus. The discussion is also pretty interesting. Wow, Frum has some very quotable quotes!
I don't agree with Frum on everything... but this is intelligent conversation!
I think we should have a podcast where these guys just compare books.
Merry implies drunk and having sex?! I will never hear Santa say "Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas!" the same way again.
The song goes ...
God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Note the position of the comma. There is a BBC production called ‘Victorian Farm’ and Victorian Farm Christmas’ that talks about the traditions of the age and how drunken the harvest and feast day celebrations were and how the government and clergy strove to change the customs.
"Self deception" is not lying????????!!!!!!!! A mind like this is a hellish trickster never stopping to dilute others and fish or walk away with smiley face.
It's always good to hear from those from the side of the Empire. Another one is that bloke who were in the UN team that actually inspected Iraq's WMD. I believe he's was British diplomat; now an Anarchist.
So glad you finally mea culpa your role in leading us to the conservative meltdown you now decry, Mr. Frum.
Any narritive that doesn't blame arms manufacturers and oil price fixers and Turkey's califat for the war in Syria is propaganda, and there were no chemical attacks.
RE: "Asking someone what is his favorite prime number"
Seventeen, obviously. And our favorite animal is a yellow pig.
Loved it
Succinctly summing up the conversation:
Ugga Mugga!
Hate Trump! Hate Trump! Hate Trump!
Orange man bad!
Ugga Mugga Wugga!
Frum remembers a roasting he once received from Chomsky...

The only geo-engineering worth development is albedo modification as proposed by the Meer project or marine cloud brightening, which can be fine tuned and localized to deter unforeseen negative effects and maximize effectiveness.
Bush and Cheney were absolutely responsible for setting the stage for Trump.
Fairly certain coal miners get paid better than yoga instructors.
It is interesting and enjoyable though.
To State flatley that nobody would have attempted to mitigate the conditions that led to the global financial crisis maybe the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
US actually stopped some wars? which wars would that be??
Just the fact that we are around prevents war from breaking out between the two Koreas, Japan and China, Russia and Eastern European countries, etc.
I think South Korea was somewhat a success story. That country just wouldn't exist now, it would be one giant North Korea.
@Kevin Tewey i'm just answering the question. I definitely don't think America always helped - often the opposite. And yeah Vietnam seems to be doing fine. I like a balance personally - here in NZ we embrace capitalism but have strong social institutions too. One doesn't have to cancel the other.
I'm not a big fan of un-restrained capitalism going forward though... it creates so much waste and makes us all stressed out dickheads.
Brandon Fouts the wars we prevented were the ones you didn’t hear about, in Europe mostly, where war was waged every thirty years or so until WWII destroyed all the empires except ours.

He wasn't screened out because so many Republicans love him.
Why is it that people here, who I assume are a along the entire political spectrum, can pretty much agree that conversations like these benfits everyone, yet this is not at all what the world looks like?
May be that the algorithm is herding me, but I see it in many places, and still, politics is like a cancer on the soul of humanity as of now.
There must be powerful forces, from all camps, that is encouraging the current state of affairs.
And im not that clever, if I have figured it out, most people have, surely!
And still!!
I just do not get it.
How do you know Iran has been complying with the terms of the treaty without being able to verify?
Excellent talk. Lawrence you need to get a better web cam (longer focal length). Your looking like Earnest (goes to camp). Ha Ha Have a great day.
About the EU and vaccines we have bough and negotiating the contracts united.
It’s all about managed decline. If the political elite are making twice the amount on the way down than they made on the way up, the system is working perfectly. -Adam Curtis
Americans don't depend on government for truth. We don't depend on government for much, other than for masochistic entertainment. It might be different for Canadiens.
28:39 Why is it so puzzling that a candidate would ask you what the most important issues are? They're asking you so they can know what to speak to in speeches, as they campaign. You can bet that data is being tabulated. They want to know what resonates with you, and similar people like you.
Enjoyed this, but come on Lawrence, let the man finish a sentence
It’s just to get us to the donate page
Gotta say - as a friend - Prof K. - the "Covid beard" makes you look like Lenin. Its not really a winning look for you. No offense.
Frum is always a top notch speaker - I never miss him - so I give the podcast an A+ overall (WITHOUT the beard) D.A., J.D., NYC :-)
RUclips keeps pushing this on me and I have to say the last thing I need and especially want on a Sunday night is David friggin Frum.
You keep talking about MOM, but you never mentioned her name.
Being on the so-called left does not insulate you from having cruelty in your personality (may not be an exact quote):
First, naturally no one is immune to having cruelty inside.
Light personalities:
INTP, ISTJ, INFJ, ISFP, ESTP, ENTJ, ESFJ, ENFP.
Dark Personalities:
ENTP, ESTJ, ENFJ, ESFP, ISTP, INTJ, ISFJ, INFP.
It seems to me that carbon sequestration is quite a long way from being as affordable as carbon emission reduction
We cannot even eliminate increasing emissions, let alone significantly reduce emissions
So carbon sequestration is out of the question
Comparing climate change to Covid..
we are in about the same covid situation that we faced in early January
In other words, we are very far from coming to terms with the severity of the problem as other than a remote and questionable threat
Carbon sequestering has come down in cost dramatically over the past twenty years and will keep falling. It was a minor news story two years ago.
yamishogun
I see no conceivable fall in sequestration prices that will make that process equal or less expensive than simply not emitting the carbon in the first place
He blinded me with Science!
U.S govt system is not the greatest... well it is in the sense that it was the first modern democracy and the most influential. Frum is not looking at it like it can be updated - which it has in other countries.
1:09:14: '...the Sun does produce on the Earth about 100,000 times more power...'
And there are billions of tonnes of gold in the oceans. But there's no way to EFFICIENTLY & EFFECTIVELY gather it.
Solar power requires -- among other things -- huge amounts of scarce resources, vast... tracts of land, and insane storage capacities. And then there's distribution (all that copper, aluminium, steel, concrete, trenching). And maintenance. It's great under the right conditions, but it can't scale to be the sole or even primary supply for major areas.
MWGrossmann correct, it’s unimaginable that a PhD physicist would still be supporting such a low intensity, “pre-industrial” form of energy

David Frum is wrong with such regularity; his continued access to platforms such as these merely showcase the dysfunction in which we currently exist. I'm not saying he should be silenced, I'm saying he isn't worth listening to.
1:16:15 Noam Chompsky name drop.
This should be called the Name Dropping Podcast. Just count them. Yale, Steven Hawking, Biden, etc. Stop with the social signaling, Lawrence. Nobody cares.
It would definitely be name dropping if it was a lay person saying it but for Strauss it's just the company he has and the people he's around. He's a very successful academic and you'd expect him to be around other very successful and influential people. Seen in that light it doesn't seem so much like name dropping.
@@cvdavis Doesn't make a difference. There's no need to mention what college you or your guest went to. He leans on his credentials and connections way more than anyone needs to, and you see it in every episode. It's a form of social signaling, and it's one thing that turned me off to his content. If you're successful, none of that should matter. Your ideas and work should stand on their own.
